LPC loons
The 2 eggs should hatch in the window of June 19-23'rd

Saturday, July 17th 2021 Each year, LPC hosts an annual Loon Census to monitor New Hampshire's loons and their progress on lakes throughout the state. The invaluable data gathered from census observations are used as: a mid-season check on productivity, a mechanism for discovering unknown birds in each territory, a means to track movement of loons and define relationships between neighboring pairs, and a community based tool for generating interest and involvement in loons.

June 22, 2021

Chick 2 meets Dad for the first time

Dawn - Mom called to Dad across the lake
Dad came with chick 1
Chick 2 didnt know Dad and did NOT want to go in the water
So Dad brooded both chicks awhile
Mom swam free after around 30 hours

Tobin Island Loon
June 27, 2021

She laid 2 eggs in May
In June an owl attacked and dragged her off nest into water
The male abandoned the nest after a territory dispute
The new male adopted the nest, female and eggs

This morning when Mom slid off nest she dragged the egg into the water
We did not expect it to hatch. Eggs were left alone rather often

A muskrat would swim by periodicly. We named him Elon

So ends loon season

LOON FIGHT
Loon Territorial Fight
Jul 14, 2022  Three loons, 2 fighting then one chases the other out of the area.  We believe these were two males.  The current male territory owner is in his first year, having driven off the previous male in 2021.  Having just had a successful hatch of two chicks, a fight for territorial rights was a good possibility.

The two chicks were stashed far away and the fight was on.  At the moment, we don't know who won.  Only the female is in the area and she retrieved the two chicks.

Seems loon cam extended range picked up a fight today

Loon Chick Rescue
July 14, 2022
An intern from LPC rescues an abandoned chick and brings it back to the nest.  It takes two tries, because the chick imprints to the kayak but after the second drop off, the mother loon takes over and corrals the loon back to the nest.

The chick had been abandoned by an unbanded male, who hasn't been acting by the book.  The chick was in the water, clinging to a buoy for four hours before the rescue took place.

Loon Territorial Fight
https://youtu.be/tQbQ_KBLh8I

My theory is that chick 1 we called Stormy, he hatched during a storm, was off nest and away for 4 hours while chick 2 hatched.  So #2 had sole possession of raft that 4 hours.  That is one reason he didnt submit to his older sibling.  The chick fight looked a lot like his Dad's real fight.

They do learn early

Welcome to LPC's LoonCam 2!  UPDATE: (Sunday 3:30PM)  Egg 1 hatched 9:59PM Saturday, July 9.  The chick appears healthy.  The second egg hatched Sunday, around 3:30PM.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hggPzB1jKZE

This YouTube live stream features a loon nest in the lakes region of central New Hampshire. There were two eggs on the nest.  Hatches were predicted to be July 8-10.  The first egg was laid June 11, at 18:51:25 and the second egg on June 14 at 9:21:36, or 62 hours apart.  Our blogger's precise hatch predictions (and he has a good track record) is: Egg 1: July 8, 10 pm. Egg 2: July 10, 2 am.  During incubation, hatch, and before leaving the nest, anything can and has happened.  For much more information on loons, see our web site at https://loon.org/    FYI, the LoonCam 1 pair did not nest this year due to territorial issues and is no longer streaming.
