LAA lost another one.  They are ranked last in the American West League.  No surprise.

Dodgers are complete opposite.  They are ranked as first in the National West League!  Yeah!

Brother trying to wake sister
At dawn, one of Samantha?s female cubs was sound asleep on a wide railing next to the security of a white pine she could climb. Her brother thought it was time she got up. He gently tugged on her ear, Brother gave up and chose to sleep
Brother gave up and chose to sleep
licked her face, mouthed her neck, and lifted her foot. She wasn?t ready. He lay down near her.

The day got hot (84?F). Bear after bear soaked in the lake.

The phone rang. Fern and her cubs were making an unusual midday appearance at one of the feeding stations. This was an opportunity. They and Jewel?s family were coming in more at night now, the landowner said. Before we could get there, though, an adolescent male stopped by to enjoy the landowner?s tub. Fern and family retreated up a tree.

Even though it?s not mating season, she brought out the nicest, friendly sounds from the young male as he got out of the tub and tried to play with her. The picture shows him saying nice things to her, with her looking apprehensive. He played with a stick instead.

It was an enjoyable hour. We were constantly fascinated.

At the Bear Center, Ted?s 650-gallon tub went in yesterday in time for that hot day and today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6h1f7Y2ky0

Tasha is gradually expanding her horizons. Yesterday, after she was released into the big enclosure in the morning, she relaxed in a daybed out in the woods, while Holly made herself at home in Tasha?s pool. At midday, Tasha came back to her pen for food with Holly tracking her just 10 seconds behind. Things are going well.

Lily Fans and a reporter asked me what I thought of spearing bears. Not cool. Back in the day, killing meat by any means meant survival. Today, using weapons that make it more difficult to make a quick kill is inhumane. If a person is going to kill a bear, use a rifle for the most accurate killing shot. A long throw with a spear cannot be that accurate. To get close enough for a reasonable chance of a killing throw likely requires a cooperative bear?one that has learned not to fear people that much, which doesn?t sound all that sporting. When it comes to bear hunting, the more ?sporting? a person makes the hunt, the higher the likelihood of wounding?the biggest problem in bear hunting.

Wow Cal and JP, looks like this night Miami wins.  Guess JP will have bragging rights until at least tomorrow night.    ;D

Cal, looks like Excelsior is just getting hammered tonight with rain.  Good thing your Royals are playing in Miami.   Hope you get your power on and stay safe.

Keep safe everyone.  Looks like it is Tornado Alley tonight for Indiana and Ohio.

OK Good Night, SED to all from the Eaglette

Rues you said "So glad to read that Sam's cub is reunited with the family! "  and for some reason I read it Sam's club and thought what on earth is going on with Sam's Club and reunite with the family?  Geeze, it finally clicked.  :D

"got a picture i took of my dad. he was looking out at the canyon"  I bet that was a neat picture of your dad, Cal.

Good article on the canyon Eaglette.  It sounds like you've had a busy time before/during/after your company.  Sounds like a nice visit though.

Aww "Brother trying to wake sister" was so cute!!  The way the cubs sleep on the railing they must think it's like a branch  :D

We're fine up here in Cresco, Eaglette, thanks for asking.  Decorah is pretty flat near where the river winds through and that water really went up.  We're about 25 miles from Walmart.  The nature center area had a bunch of flooding at Vernon Springs, about five miles from here, but that was going down fast today.  You couldn't even tell there was a step dam under all that water.  Here is the link for the album. It's in facebook, but a link anyone can use.  We got 4.7 inches at home, some areas close by got more, and Decorah had 8.something inches.

Tasha Loves Freedom - UPDATE August 24, 2016

Curator Sharon Herrell stated the problem well.

"After a day of allowing Tasha to be out, she came back to her pen at 4:30 but wouldn't go in. She turned around and walked back into the woods. She is no longer afraid of Holly. After a long day exploring, Tasha refreshes herself in her pool.
After a long day exploring, Tasha refreshes herself in her pool.
She wants to be free to roam the big enclosure. That means she will soon have to deal with Lucky. Lucky?s displays toward Tasha have been displays of uncertainty?pounces, blowing, slapping the ground?not displays of outright ferocity. Holly was also giving displays of uncertainty, just as Tasha was doing toward her once Tasha got past her period of abject terror. They became friends. I believe that Tasha and Lucky can progress in the same way."

Displays of uncertainty look ferocious but are performed by six-pound cubs. I?ve seen a bear pounce toward a person and slap the ground, only to calm down and eat out of the person?s hand. I saw a mother bear do that toward a person who was in her den with her cubs when she unexpectedly returned. There is no absolute certainty. If Tasha remains out, we can?t keep Lucky in indefinitely. Lucky?s displays are waning. We wanted to wait longer before allowing access between them. We may have to shorten the timetable and be on guard for actions that might need intervention. The staff will remain watchful. Curator Sharon is off tomorrow, though. The bears will dictate what happens over the next few days. Some things are a balance between tight control and giving the bears the freedom to live a stimulating life. The staff will be watchful, ready, and flexible in trying to do what is best for the bears in this time of uncertainty.

Out the window at the WRI, Samantha?s four cubs are all together in the darkness.

Thank you for all you do.

Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

Editor's Note: We learned that Tasha did return to her enclosure this evening after Curator Sharon Herrell wrote the above.

Here are some old friends.  Jewel, Fern and Herbie in 2013.

The Miami trip went well.  The doctor was not too happy about some liquid still in my eye  so  I  go back a little sooner than lately.  7 weeks, October 5.

I slept well and things seem  to be back to normal.

Good thoughts for all to have good weather and a Thursday you will enjoy remembering.

71 and they're talking 74.  It's a little sticky, but not as bad as it could be, although the sun is out full blast.

I'm glad your visit in Miami went pretty well JP, although sorry you have to go back a little earlier this time.

I always loved the name Herbie for a bear cub/bear.  :)  It sounds like things are progressing with Tasha, that's good!

"Only" 17,000 fans, wow, but then I don't know what's normal for a baseball game.  Glad the real bad stuff missed you Cal and you had power.  It sounded like Indiana had tornadoes, one town TWO, and on into Ohio.  :(

Take care all.......

I've had horses and ridden, but I'm beginning to think they gave me one of the horses that hadn't been ridden as I was off in 3:41.
