Brother trying to wake sister

At dawn, one of Samantha?s female cubs was sound asleep on a wide railing next to the security of a white pine she could climb. Her brother thought it was time she got up. He gently tugged on her ear, Brother gave up and chose to sleep

licked her face, mouthed her neck, and lifted her foot. She wasn?t ready. He lay down near her.
The day got hot (84?F). Bear after bear soaked in the lake.
The phone rang. Fern and her cubs were making an unusual midday appearance at one of the feeding stations. This was an opportunity. They and Jewel?s family were coming in more at night now, the landowner said. Before we could get there, though, an adolescent male stopped by to enjoy the landowner?s tub. Fern and family retreated up a tree.

Even though it?s not mating season, she brought out the nicest, friendly sounds from the young male as he got out of the tub and tried to play with her. The picture shows him saying nice things to her, with her looking apprehensive. He played with a stick instead.
It was an enjoyable hour. We were constantly fascinated.
At the Bear Center, Ted?s 650-gallon tub went in yesterday in time for that hot day and today.

Tasha is gradually expanding her horizons. Yesterday, after she was released into the big enclosure in the morning, she relaxed in a daybed out in the woods, while Holly made herself at home in Tasha?s pool. At midday, Tasha came back to her pen for food with Holly tracking her just 10 seconds behind. Things are going well.
Lily Fans and a reporter asked me what I thought of spearing bears. Not cool. Back in the day, killing meat by any means meant survival. Today, using weapons that make it more difficult to make a quick kill is inhumane. If a person is going to kill a bear, use a rifle for the most accurate killing shot. A long throw with a spear cannot be that accurate. To get close enough for a reasonable chance of a killing throw likely requires a cooperative bear?one that has learned not to fear people that much, which doesn?t sound all that sporting. When it comes to bear hunting, the more ?sporting? a person makes the hunt, the higher the likelihood of wounding?the biggest problem in bear hunting.
