Holly, Lucky, Volunteers, Gathering - UPDATE October 17, 2015

WRI Volunteers
WRI Volunteers
With the click of the camera, Holly was immediately awake, but it took Lucky a half minute longer. Both were very lethargic. They?re settling in. Lucky is in his regular spot in the back corner where he spent the winter with Ted some years back, with Honey after that, and by himself last winter. That?s his spot, which might be why he dragged the straw from the next door den to this one. Except for this picture, staff is not disturbing them because they want accurate dates for the denning contest. This view is what the Den Cam will show when we get the camera up?in a week or two they say.

The big, dead white pine is safely topped so it won?t fall on the WRI. Local volunteers gathered for their annual work day, joined by neighbors who managed the tree-topping. Here?s the moment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZdtNUOsG7E The tree held a lot of cubs over the years and can still hold some, but it will see more woodpeckers. We?re leaving the top where it fell, hoping for pictures of bears, squirrels, woodpeckers and other animals on it.

Feeling pumped up working with the volunteers drove home once again how much volunteers do for the North American Bear Center and Wildlife Research Institute. They know, and we know, how much they do and the huge difference they make in so many ways. Thank you.

Bear-hunting ends tomorrow a half hour after sunset at 6:44 PM.

The big Hinckley Gathering of recent years has moved to the Mystic Lake Hotel and Casino in Prior Lake, Minnesota. It?s happening in a couple weeks on November 7, 2015. This should be an easier spot for Lily Fans to reach. It begins at noon. The cost is $30, which includes a sandwich lunch buffet. The last day to confirm by paying the fee is October 31. More information is posted on the Facebook Event Page at:
https://www.facebook.com/events/540693516083617. See you there!

Tomorrow, Donna and I are off to The Wildlife Society meeting to give the Den Cam talk. We?ll resume the updates when we get back on Wednesday or so.

Thank you for all you do.

Aww Lily sleeping in the tree  :)

I brought the two plants in I really want Ra, the rest are "accidentally" getting finished off out there.  It's 58 now, but got down below freezing last night, can't remember the actual temp, oh yeah, 27.  It's sunny and windy.  I think I'll work on getting the last of the day lilies dug out I've been working on so I can put some bulbs in on that side of them.  There will still be plenty left.  They are very old established plants and horrid to get out with the roots they've got.  If I don't today I won't be able to move, Sparky and I took way too long a walk, but it was so nice to have part of it outside of town and good walking weather.  I'm already pretty stiff though.  Our block is like a two blocks together for length, so this will give you an idea.  I'm going to drive it this afternoon and check how far it was.  Think I'll eat something before I do anything though.

The leaf blower was a good idea to use on CA being it was just dust!  :D  What's that song, Blowing in the Wind....there goes CA!!

Off to get some food to eat while I work the puzzle, THANKS for that, always enjoy them.

Oh I think that was you, RA, that asked on my hydrangea.  Yep, I cut it back most of the way and then any leaves that blew in there get to stay until spring.  It's next to the porch and on the east side of the house, so seems to do well there.  I forgot to take a picture of it this year, it went crazy.

Hi Jewelies! We had a frost but I don't think a freeze. My tender plants did get zapped. My morning glories on the top the fence got it but other things near to the ground were ok. Another night to go and then a warm up.

Cal, fingers crossed until bear season is over. Then we can breathe again! Glad you guys had a nice dinner! I wish I could speak Spanish! Glad nothing happened riding with that bad tire! When Crow rode his 4 wheeler he always wore a helmet and googles even when he rode at George's! When he road the Hatfield-McCoy Trail helmets and googles were required so he just got in the habit. George would laugh at him and call him a sissy because he doesn't wear a helmet! I couldn't find any pansies this fall! Someone must have bought them all! I love pansies!  Funny about you thinking that was your old smokey! :D

Jp, love that pic of Lily! How can she sleep like that and not fall?

Obsver, thank you for the birthday greeting! I can't believe I'm 65. When my mom was 65 she, in my mind, was old! She was a grandma and on Medicare! I'm no grandma(unfortunately) but I'm on Medicare! :o I picked a few tomatoes and green peppers yesterday. I haven't been out back behind the garage to see if the frost got them last night but I have a feeling they got it! I think this time of year the tomatoes don't taste as good as they did in summer.

Ra, The first time I saw black squirrels was in Lansing, MI, when Robin was in law school. Then a few years ago they started showing up in north Parkersburg about 2 miles from me on Robin's street. I have no idea how they got there! I saw one once on the telephone line in front of my house and never saw him again. There was another black one run over up the street from Robin's house this morning. I haven't heard of any sightings in any other areas of town. Wonder if someone caught some in MI and released them here?  I had all intentions of leaving a huge hibiscus and a very tall cactus outside to get bit by frost but at the last minute I brought them inside! Maybe next year! Are the grands still spending weekends with you?

Hi Nora. Looks like you have a nice walk planned out. I should walk. I always did it religiously everyday for years. Then I stopped and never started again. My hydrangea had a bad winter last year. Got it clear to the ground. So this summer it just grew with no blooms. Mine is the type that blooms on old wood. If the wood is killed there goes the blooms. I separated day lilies last fall. I need to separate my iris and peonies. Hope I get around to it! :D

HI Jewelies!  BEAR SEASON IS OVER !!  YAY !!
Furnace is still on.  Only got to 60o today.  I decided that it's my house and I'm not going to be cold.  I make the decisions AND I pay the bills!  lol  We have a freeze watch for tonight...

JP... Clemson plays Miami next Saturday at Miami.  Should be a good game.

cal...  How's your toe?  Love the pic of Lucky and Holly in their den!  So cute!  I have to laugh at you and rues talking about wearing googles!!  lol  I always thought they were called goggles!  lol  Glad you guys had fun riding yesterday and had a good meal, too!

Nora... Did you get your yard work done today?  Have you had any snow yet?  I see MI and New England got some last night.  I have a hydrangea, but it never blooms.  The plant is nice and healthy, but I've only had a handful of flowers on it in all these years.  I wonder if I need to put it where it gets more sun...

rues... My hydrangea blooms on old wood, too.  Any idea why my hydrangea doesn't bloom?  Do they need more sun?  Mine is mostly in the shade.  The grands come here every other weekend usually.  Sometimes something comes up and we have to skip our time.  We eat out every other Wednesday, too.

Have a good evening, Jewelies!

Cole in his first year, 2013

Well, I overslept (or maybe I underslept) but late night baseball.  Royals and Mets are both 2 wins 0 losses and may be on the way to meeting in the W.S.  Nice if Royals win tonight in Toronto.

ra, Clemson should have no trouble next week.  Although Miami has a fine quarterback (Kaya) they are nowhere near a match for Clemson.

I think I shouldn't have used 96-triangles on this one, I was wandering around in the sunflowers for 15:35 and boy did my allergies kick in.  ;)

Good evening Jewelies! The frost was really on the pumpkin this morning! Lots of dead plants in the yard now. Nice temps in the 70's for the next week with no rain! Shame the frost had to come and kill.

Cal, Crow is watching your Royals. He just pointed out Cueto me. That guy has some hair! :D  No wonder George laughed at Crow...he was wearing googles!  :D I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type! I blame my misspelling on the Internet and Google.  My sis visited Brevard, NC where white squirrels are the main attraction! She said the squirrels run all over town. She brought me back a T shirt!  I have 2 fav pansy colors...solid purple and the yellow ones with the dark centers. Bet yours looked really pretty in front of your white door when they were alive! :D. Yay, hunting season is over. Thank god.

Ra, my mom once said the same thing...she pays the gas bill so she is staying warm. She said she refused to be cold in her own house! :D  My hydrangea is on the northeast side of my house. It only gets morning sun. I read that if they get too much shade they may not bloom. Robin's hydrangea is in full sun and blooms on new growth so she always has an abundance of flowers. I think it's so nice that you and your grands spend time together. I'm afraid that's something I'll never experience. Darn it!   Goggles/googles! Would you believe I used to get spelling bee awards! :D

Jp, that is the cutest pic of baby Cole! I just want to hug him!

Hi Jewelies!  Another cool night and day, but it doesn't look like I've lost any plants... yet.  It's supposed to warm up here, too.  I'm watching the Voice... love that show.  Sure are some talented people around!  My oldest grand said she wants to go on the Voice some day.

cal... I hope your Royals win again, so they can rest up awhile before the big show!  lol

rues... LOL... Crow was laughed at because he was wearing googles!  lol  lol  White squirrels in Brevard??  I'm not THAT far from there and we sure don't have them.  We just have little gray ones... maybe they call them red... I'm not sure.  lol  I might have to move part of my hydrangea to a new sunny place...

Nora... Hope your "allergies" are better!  lol

JP... I hope you're right about this weekend's game... Sure would be nice to go undefeated this year!   ;)

Hope all our Jewelies are doing good and have a nice evening!
