Hi Cal! I tracked Robin's flight until 11:30 last night. I thought the plane would fly straight across the ocean from Charlotte to London but it didn't. It hugged the entire east coast all the way up to someplace in far north eastern Canada then it headed out over the ocean. That's when I quit tracking it. The thought of her flying over the ocean didn't sit well for me! The info said there was still 2000 miles to go. I tossed and turned all night but finally feel asleep. Then Crow woke me up around 4:30 to see if Robin had sent me an email. Her phone won't work in England so she has to email or Skype wherever there is wifi. I checked my email and she had posted that they landed around 4:28 am our time, 9:28 England time. She was meeting Letty at a designated spot. Letty flew in from Miami. They are going to part one of the Potter play this evening. It's probably over now since there's the 5 hr difference in time! Lol! I've been walking around like a zombie today. I have to have 8 hrs sleep!  I wish you could send me some of your rain! We just had another storm fizzle out across the river so no rain today.

Jp, every year at our county's homecoming festival there are always vendors selling bear claws! I normally get funnel cake instead! Bear claws and funnel cake sell for $5 a piece!

Nora, your weather sounds wonderful! I can't wait till it comes here. I started putting out my fall decorations hoping to give Mother Nature a hint! Lol!

Blschue, I want cooler temps but I sure don't want frost!

I want to go to bed early tonight but I see that Blindspot's new season starts tonight at 10 pm. Ugh.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Ted, Monarch, Wildlife - UPDATE September 14, 2016
14 September 2016
Print Email
Tasha is out again tonight. Making progress. Not as afraid of Lucky and Holly. Lily Fans caught the action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA5wlki-330 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Eeigy4VIIUPine Marten
Pine marten

Curator Sharon Herrell tells the story.

Pine marten
"Tasha showed up in her enclosure at 11:30 for her breakfast. She was in for a brief time and then out and about again. She seems to love her freedom but still needs to respond to her name being called. At the 3:00 Behind-the-Scenes Lucky, Holly and Tasha were all on the mound eating. Tasha kept her distance but grew bolder each time she ran from the two. Holly does keep her watch on little Tasha. The dynamics of the relationships seem to change each day. Tasha is becoming more confident but still wants Holly to play."

Samantha's cub
Yesterday, Ted made us wonder what he was thinking. Could he be considering the Rock Den for the winter? We'll see if he thinks he fits as well in there as Honey and Lucky did. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riBpUbBA0RI.

20160914 Monarch Ziobro
Monarch released
Out the window, again there are fewer bears and more food to share. This time it was mammals taking their share. I haven't seen a pine marten for over a year. Maybe two years. Marten numbers are down. But out the window, a volunteer snapped a picture of one on the railing and a gray fox waiting its turn. The marten was quick, like weasels are. Shortly the marten was peering down from the top of a red pine stump about 30 feet tall.

Gray Fox
Not all the bears are gone, though. At dawn, Samantha was looking for her four cubs, grunting as she walked, sniffed, and looked up trees. She found them hidden high in a white pine. The one in the picture looks big, so it is probably one of her two males, her biggest cubs.

Mallard on the beaver dam
I saw ripples in a bay of Woods Lake and walked down to maybe see a beaver. It was a female mallard. By the time I got down there she was gleaning bits of vegetation from the beaver dam, which I didn't know they did.

At the Bear Center, monarchs stole the limelight for awhile as Donna Rogers and Linda Ziobro released 5 of them. A beautiful picture they sent for the update.

Thank you for all you do.

I know I'd never do this, but for anyone that is a rising dough baker here are the bear claws.  I couldn't remember what they looked like.  I see you did too JP!   :D :D http://www.sprinklebakes.com/2012/12/how-to-make-bear-claws.html

I hope you're feeling better as the day progresses JP.

The picture of Luna "Really, you don't say?"

That pine marten is beautiful.  I'd sure love to see a gray fox, have always seen the red.

I'm glad Robin arrived at her destination ok, that's a long flight.

Hi Cal! I thought Robin was going to the 1st part of the Potter play last night but I was wrong. It was tonight and she emailed a little while ago to say it was amazing! She can't wait for the 2nd half tomorrow eve! This was what she was doing last night...

She hasn't stopped smiling since she landed.  Wish you could send me some rain! We are several inches below normal for this time year. We were 2 inches short last month and no significant rainfall so far this month. We mowed this morning just so we could mow off the crab grass seeds. That's the only green in the yard. But please don't send any rain on Sat to eastern WV! We are leaving tomorrow for our little weekend get away! Sis told me to bring my ipad because our room has wifi. So hopefully I can check in here! Yep, that girl on Blindspot is covered from head to toe in tatts! I'm glad I stayed up and watched it last night. It was pretty good! Nice update pics! Beautiful butterfly! Hope Polly gets home ok!

Jp, that bear claw looks yummy! Hoping your day went well!

Nora, thanks for the info on bear claws! I'm not much of a baker so I'll leave that to the pros! Lol! I've never seen a gray fox either. We have red ones here but I don't know if there are gray ones or not.

Neva, I have 2 dogs here that would do the same thing! Lol! Maddie would have company!

Daily Updates
Lucky, Holly, Tasha, Ted, Etc. - UPDATE September 15, 2016
15 September 2016
Print Email
At the Bear Center, Lucky flew off the scale to chase Holly, who didn't look that scared but seemed to take refuge in the increasingly popular Rock Den as captured by a Adolescent Bear at WRI
Adolescent Bear at WRI
Lily Fan at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnuGHu-Wsu4.

Ted was his usual good self when I visited him today, approaching with his sweet sounds giving me his ultimate greeting. I felt honored.

Lynn and Tasha
Lynn and Tasha
I haven't been with Tasha for awhile, so I visited her close-up to judge her demeanor. She hardly noticed me as I came into her pen and then came to me and stood up confidently with no show of anxiety.

At the WRI, we glimpsed one cub at daybreak and an adolescent male in the evening. We ate a tense supper, listening for shots from a hunter across the street and from a bait site on the other side of the property. Finally, someone looked at the clock and noted that shooting hours were over. Red Squirrel
Red Squirrel
We hardly dare to relax, but fewer bears and hunters are about here and elsewhere in the area. The bears' active season is winding down.

Pileated Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
A volunteer snapped a picture of the adolescent male bear and also of a pileated woodpecker and red squirrel.

We wonder how Lucky and Tasha's hibernation schedules will differ, Lucky being from Wisconsin and Tasha being from Kentucky.

Also, at the Bear Center, we are looking for ideas for upgrading the Cub Room. What would be fun and educational for kids?

Thank you for all you do.

Here she is - Jewel.

I have noticed that as I get older there is a wider fluctuation in how I feel.  Some days seem real energetic, other days completely void of energy.  Yesterday I just did not have it,  I would seem to have trouble lifting a glass of water.  Today is totally different.  I got up almost springing out of bed.  I vote for more days like that.

It is time to spend this Friday preparing for the weekend.  After I retired from the Navy and joined the civilian working force I always loved Fridays because it led to a couple of days to get more accomplished around the house.  Just as I loved holidays as that was a day-off as well.  Now, week ends and holidays don't seem to be so special.

I do hope that you all have a great Friday, anyway that you approach it.

cal, Do you know what age an adolescent bear is?  I had not heard that term before.

I did that "cute" puzzle in 6;03.
