How is Maddie, Neva?

Wouldn't you think hibernation schedule would go on the daylight/temperatures or whatever they go by rather than where they came from?

I'm glad you had a little more "spring" this morning JP. Was the sun out?

"Can you imagine dramas big head sticking in the neighbors window?"  They'd probably give him anything he wanted Cal.  :D

Robin looks fantastic Rues!

Ursula.  She really has her ears perked up.

Well, we caught a Saturday.  All we need to do is figure out what we are going to do with it.  I don't have the energy to do much.

Here's a good thought for us all.

Daily Updates
Hope, Ted, Tasha, Spider, WRI - UPDATE September 16, 2016
16 September 2016
Print Email
It's hard to believe 5 years have passed since Hope was taken from us. She brought so many of us together and made possible so much learning for all of us. She will never be forgotten.Hope collage by a Lily Fan

Ted looks comfortable in his den lit so nicely by the sun. It was great to see him yesterday.

Curator Sharon Herrell wrote about Tasha: "Early this morning I went to get straw for the bears. This is the start of fall transition and preparing the dens for hibernation. Each bear received two bales. Before the noon Behind-the-Scene tour we prepared the cabin and two bunker dens.

One of the Bear Educators retrieved bowls from the big bunker den while Holly got her back rubbed.

During the noon Behind-the-Scene tour Holly showed up in Tasha's den. In return, Tasha went into the cabin. It was very funny to see the swap. Holly left Tasha's den and began pacing outside the cabin den. I had already put straw in the cabin den. Tasha went in and began playing with the straw. She was moving and throwing the straw around. Holly's pacing quickened, as if she were saying, "Get out of my house"! We coaxed Holly up to the bunker dens so Tasha could leave the cabin without Holly chasing her.

Fishing spider
Holly received her breakfast in the bunker. She hadn't had her breakfast earlier. She has been eating very lightly or not eating at all. She selected her bunch of grapes and took them in the big bunker den to eat them.

She has prepared her dug den and has been in it for over a week. However, she was very interested in both bunker dens last week. Today, she checked out the small bunker but chose to go into the big bunker and rake in straw. She has also been in her cabin den. The choice may be interesting.

Lucky in the meantime examined the pile of straw near the small bunker and he began raking and moving it into the small bunker.

Folks in our virtual world were fortunate to see Tasha playing in her straw."

In the Ecology Hall, the fishing spider's eggs hatched and the mother made another nursery web. The note with the great picture said, "9/16/16 fishing spiders second nursery 32 days in the making."

At the WRI, we saw only two bears today--two adolescent males, one of which was Tim, the 3-year-old son of Donna. But at another community feeding station, the landowner saw Jewel and Fern and their cubs, plus Guy and a couple other males.

No shots heard today.

Yes Cal ...  I definitely would be shocked to see Drama's head come through my kitchen window, and Nora is right, he could probably have anything he wanted.   :o

Rues ...  I wish I could have stowed away in Robin's suitcase.  I admire her, she is living her life, and getting to do some of the things that she wants to do.  She is a pretty young lady too.

Maddie has lost weight, but is the hungriest dog I have ever known.  When dinner is being fixed, Maddie hangs out in the kitchen, hoping to be the taste-tester, and she does a certain amount of whining about it too.  Zoe follows Maddie, and hangs out too, hoping something will be dropped.

Zoe --  Out on the porch, on a rainy day... looking for a mouse.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Samantha - UPDATE September 17, 2016
17 September 2016
Print Email
Tasha got her first straw yesterday and had a blast checking it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CX62keu81Q. The straw might help herSamantha
Samantha
to choose her den that she is used to; but in talking with Sharon today, I learned that Tasha and Holly are going to have a lot of freedom to roam. Some wild gene could make her decide to den somewhere else. Sharon says she is putting straw by the Rock Den by the viewing area, opening another possibility. I suspect Sharon will put straw by the Window Den that Honey used to den in to see if a bear likes that spot.

The latest weights are: Lucky 483 (up 11 pounds), Holly 286 (down 6 pounds with all her work?), Ted 650 (up 7 pounds), Tasha 195 (up 13 pounds).

Samanthas cub in tree
Samanthas cub in tree
At the WRI, the day started with Samantha and her four cubs putting in an appearance when it was still dark. Later, the cubs climbed high in a white pine to spend hours resting. Mom was nowhere to be seen. Then a grunt came through the speaker from the outside microphone. She was back. She approached the tree grunting. A cub gave a mellow mew. They all descended and followed her in a line like we read in books. They apparently felt like doing that. It doesn't always work that way. I'd been sitting at the computer too long. I grabbed a camera and went where they were headed--the beaver dam. They gave a totally different response to me there. I was out of place. I was in their private forest. Samantha ran away across the dam. She stopped on the other shore far enough from me to feel safe scanning my side of the shore for her cubs. I took a picture of her with a 200 mm lens. The cubs didn't dare come near me. One climbed a tree to look at me (photo). The others stayed at the base out of sight. I took a picture of the cub with the same long lens. I don't know what the distances were, but the same bears that are so accepting when they expect me were very wary when I was out of place in their world. I got out of their way. Samantha came back and fetched them.

Mallards
Mallards on beaver dam
It made me miss June who taught us so much and learned so much. She knew our voices and routines. We could call her from long distances. She lives on in the Bear Center starring in many of the 66 videos. She knew to ignore us and not look at the camera. The DNR knew how to hurt us on that one, and how to leave us wondering when they lied about it the next day.

Three mallards loafed or dug through the mud in the beaver pond paying little attention to Samantha or me.

We're glad hunting season is winding down.

Elid, all grown up.

I have no idea why I overslept this much.  I went to bed early as the Marlins game was not televised.  A good thing as they were behind 5-0 at the end of the first inning.  I see they lost 8-0 so  they pretty much checked out of the wild card race.

Even without that crummy news I am grumpy because of the oversleeping and I don't feel good.  It can only get better.

Please accept grumpy wishes for a good Sunday for each and everyone.

Hi Jewelies! We got home this afternoon. Had a great time. The train ride was so much fun. We didn't see any eagles or bears. 😕 All we saw were 2 ducks and a couple crows! Lol! I'll post some pics tomorrow. We felt like we were in the dark ages because we had no cell phone coverage in that entire area. We were told that AT&T was the only carrier! And of course none of us have that!

Cal, where's Jim going? You probably said and I must have  forgotten! You mentioned all the rain flooding all your streams out of their banks,  well, the mountains are experiencing the same drought as we are. The stream that the train follows up the mountain is completely dry in some areas. The train stops at a waterfall that can only be reached by hiking in or riding the rails. Luckily there was plenty of water in that section of the river so the fall was looking good. Molly had no problem eating without me! But Boo hardly ate and wouldn't sleep in my bed alone. He laid on the floor in front of the bathroom and whined until Crow got in my bed then Boo got into bed, too. So Crow slept in my bed those 2 nights!  Boo is laying next to me now sleeping! I think he is happy that I'm home.  After seeing the 2nd part of the Potter play, Robin said she liked the play better than the book! She said it was amazing.  They head back to London tomorrow and then home on Tuesday. That week went fast. Oh, almost forgot... I didn't get to see her crossing Abbey Road because we were on the train ride but Crow saw her. She emailed him the time they planned to be there so he watched the live feed. He told her to flap her arms around so he could spot her! Sure enough she did and he watched them cross! He was able to get a couple pics of it for me. Darn, wish I could have seen that.

Neva, I feel the same as you...wish I could have gone with her. She is doing things that I could only dream of doing. I'm a big scaredy cat and I don't like to go very far from home but she is fearless and loves to travel. Love the pics of Maddie and Zoe! They are so sweet! What's growing in the flower pots?

Jp, are you still grumpy? Lol! Hope you had a nice day!

Nora, I thought the same thing as you...that hibernation would depend on daylight and temperature not where you came from!

Believe it or not but I'm tired! lol! Some traveler I am! Going to watch some PBS and go to sleep!

Maddie really looks good Neva!!  How old is she now?  I don't remember Zoe, she's really cute.

That's great Dama and Houla have each other to play with being both are so high energy.

Wow FOUR cubs for Samantha!  ALL from this year?  I didn't know bears had the many.  I guess I thought mostly two and sometimes three.

JP I got told I must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.  I blew up and said "no I didn't" and figured I better keep my mouth shut after that  :D

Glad Molly at good while you were gone Rues.  Also glad you had a good time.  "He laid on the floor in front of the bathroom and whined until Crow got in my bed then Boo got into bed, too. So Crow slept in my bed those 2 nights"  :D :D

Joe mowed part of the front yard today and then later mowed part of the back and then I wouldn't let him have the mower anymore.  He's happy to get to mow some being he hasn't been able to until now.  The new neighbor was out in his driveway doing something to his truck when I got to that end of the boulevard and must have heard me holler at Joe about something he was going to mow.  I only hollered "NO" at one point.  When Dennis saw me mowing he got a big grin and said "you guys fighting over the mower already?" and started chuckling.

Daily Updates
Holly, Ted, Spot - UPDATE September 18, 2016
18 September 2016
Print Email
Holly is a busybody den maker these days. It's like she can't have enough dens. We remember Lily attempted several dens before moving to the one where she brought us all together. Holly, surrounded by straw
Holly, surrounded by straw
She knows what straw is all about.

I like the picture the staff sent of Ted surrounded by beauty at the Bear Center. It's a perfect place for him at this time in his life. Food, safety, variety, and water to soak in. When he decides, he also can have rest and seclusion punctuated by the joy of people. From his reactions, the moments that make his days are the behind-the-scenes tours when he can interact with people and show his pleasure with friendly greetings.

Ted in his beautiful home
Ted in his beautiful home
In the woods, we were delighted to get a visit from Spot after worrying about him since September 10. Spot is the 2 year old son of Summer, Grandson of Shannon, Great-Grandson of Donna, Great-Great-Grandson of Blackheart, Great-Great-Great-Grandson of Shadow.

We still believe Sven is gone. We don't know about Kurtis. I'm hoping we see him next spring to see how he is healing. Kurtis received a wound 4" deep and 10" long that appeared to be from a spear on the first day of hunting season.

A strange black bear scat had us curious today. It was from a bear that has been gone for a few days. Then we saw that the black was just oxidation of the surface. Inside was wild vegetation. He apparently was not at a baiting site--just out foraging safely.

The Spot sighting news makes our day.

Thank you for all you do.

Donna, 16 years old.

I may have mentioned this before.  I get strange pains from time to time, some severe, some mild, like in a knee. They last a short while and then usually never return.  I  don't have anyone my age to talk to and compare but I think it is probably an aging situation.  Anyhow, today I have pains in the thigh muscles of both legs and it is very painful to walk.

We start another week and approach the beginning of Autumn, 2 days from now.  Oh, how time rushes by.  I hope all of you have a pleasant Monday.  I wish I could guarantee that for you.

cal, you are an early girlie with your update post this morning.  Ted and other happy bears at the WRI.
