Calendar, Courses - UPDATE December 4, 2015

I saw the final proof of the 2016 Calendar featuring Ted, Honey, Lucky, and Holly yesterday before it was sent off to the printer. We ordered a 3-day turnaround (upgraded from the standard 7-day turnaround) so the calendars would be shipped to the Bear Center sooner to fill orders. It is detailed and beautiful. In addition to the cover and 12 big monthly pictures, it has 164 smaller pictures of these bears over the years. Our graphic designer pulled out the stops and used the best pictures from over the years of Lucky and Holly growing up and Ted and Honey in their most beautiful settings. Scott is planning to be able to accept preorders starting about Tuesday so we can begin sending out the orders the moment the calendars arrive on Friday. It will become a keepsake for its frameable pictures.

2016 Calendar for April

We?re thinking about nine Black Bear Field Courses during July and August 2016. Each will start late morning on Sunday and end midday on Wednesday. Bears we expect to see with cubs are Fern (4 years old), Sophie (4), Daisy (5), Jewel (7), Samantha (7), RC (17). These are the bears most likely to have cubs and most likely to be seen.
Others we could see with cubs are Ellie (3), Ember (3), Cora (4), Sybil (4), Jani (5), Oliana (5), Summer (7), and Annie (12). We put these in the less likely category for various reasons.
Ellie and Ember will be only 3, meaning they have only a little better than 50-50 chance of having cubs. Ember?s chances especially may be reduced because she will likely have to spend extra energy finding a den this fall now that Lily and cubs took over the den she had counted on.

Cora (4), Sybil (4), Jani (5), and Oliana (5) should have cubs but are less likely to be seen. Jani and Oliana are old enough that they might have had cubs this year (2015) and didn?t visit here. If so, we may see them in the spring with yearlings to complete our records. They are a major question mark.
Summer (7) and Annie (12) are sweet bears who should have cubs and be frequently seen at a feeding station 4 miles away, but we might have a greater variety of experiences nearby with Fern (4), Sophie (4), Daisy (5), Jewel (7), Samantha (7), RC (17) and their cubs. These are six bears we see a lot in this neighborhood. They know where the local feeding stations are and go there, but they are seldom seen by anyone else as they rest and forage out in the woods.
We?re not ready for online registration yet, but the team will be working on that soon.
To help keep track of all the names, we posted an updated Shadow?s Clan Family Tree at

The cold season is starting out less cold with what some say will be the Godzilla of El Ni?os. The average temperature for October was 35?F, which is 8.6 degrees warmer than the long-term average of 26.4?F. Today, it seemed unusual for the temperature to get up into the 40?s and melt some of the snow of a couple days ago. The bears should lose less weight overwinter if this keeps up.
A Lily Fan emailed information on how to make your Christmas shopping count for the Bear Center. She wrote, ?I order through iGive when I can and learned this week that if you place an AMAZON SMILE order using the iGive link, both Amazon Smile and iGive gives donation to NABC! What is better than double dipping! So whenever I order something from Amazon Smile, I use the link to that store found on the iGive app.?
Thank you for all you do.
