Ice, Lily, Volunteers - UPDATE November 30, 2015

Checking the ice at dawn, I wondered if it was safe to walk on yet (probably not) to get to dens on the other side of lakes, etc. What was unusual was how smooth much of it was, like the section in the middle of Eagles Nest Lake One that formed most recently and is reflecting orange.

Midday, volunteers Mike, Lorie, and I checked the trail cam that overlooks Lily?s den area. The card showed that she and the 3 cubs had remained in the den since November 18 except for yesterday and today. These last two days they came out for a few minutes midday each day to rake in more bedding, like Holly recently did at the Bear Center. In fact, the trail cam showed that Lily and cubs went back in the den just 5 minutes before we arrived. We snapped a picture of the area they?d raked and then watched from a distance as Frankie emerged briefly. All is well.

Speaking of volunteers. We have a Volunteer Coordinator now. It is the Bear Center?s own Heidi Schiltz who began at the Bear Center in March of 2001, worked her way up to Bear Center Manager (under Director Scott Edgett), and has now added Volunteeer Coordinator duties to her position. A huge thank you to Myra and Terry for their outstanding job. They will be very involved in training Heidi and helping her grow as the coordinator. Terry and Myra will still be a big part of the Bear Center.
Thank you for all you do.
