Hi Jewelies!  :)

Well, I had to put a bigger blanket on the bed last night, but I didn't turn on the furnace yet. I did use the heater in the car this morning; it was pretty chilly when I went out to Dunkin' Donuts for a pumpkin doughnut. Yummy! I bought 2 and ate them both when I got home.

My daughter & her hubby and my son & Josh are in Vegas. They text and call me at all hours of the night when they are out there. So funny because they don't pay attention to the time and stay up all night. Anyway, David was sitting next to a guy in the Sports Book at one of the casinos and when the Royals won they were all cheering and celebrating. The guy sitting next to Dave said he was glad David's team won but he had just lost $14,000 because he bet on Toronto.  :o Yikes!!

I saw that Maureen O'Hara died the other day. I loved her movies. She did several with John Wayne. My favorite was "The Quiet Man". Here's a picture of her in that movie:

I was out running errands on Saturday and stopped to get gas. It was only $1.92 per gallon! Amazing! So I had been meaning to go over to see my old apartment that burned awhile back and it was completely gone!! All that's left of the building now is a foundation. If you look on the left side of the picture, at the top of the furthest yellow steps you will see a red star. That's where my apartment was. Sure glad I moved out of there before the fire! That building in the background was where the noisy people lived!

Yesterday I met one of my oldest friends for lunch. We have known each other since junior high school. We just got reconnected again. I had last seen her about 10 years ago. Anyway, we went to Chili's and had Mexican food. I don't know why I get Mexican food there; I don't really think it's anywhere near being really good Mexican food. We stayed there for 3 & a half hours!!! I could barely get up when it was time to leave. I was suprised they were not busy. There were empty tables all over the place the whole time we were there. I nearly had to call a tow truck to pull me up out of that booth when we got up to leave. LOL! So on the way home, I stopped to check out the progress on our new mall development. Cal here's where the old KMart was, you know, by the old theater? Found out there is going to be a Gordman's there. I like to shop there. If I can find the list of all the stores that are going in there I'll email it to you. So nice & close to me.

JP So sorry you are having a football depression. So how do you like having a cleaning lady? How often does she clean? Is she nice?

Ra I feel certain that if you keep stuffing candy down your throat, you will be cured. What is that old saying, "feed a fever, starve a cold"?

Cal I think you need to put Drama & Little Sweets in together and they can trample and butt each other instead of you! Oh no, just heard that Cueto is starting game 2 on Wednesday! He better get it together! This video was the moment of nature on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday. It's vultures at Roaring River State Park in Cassville, Mo. Maybe Scout goes there for the winter and hangs with his friends. http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/nature-vultures-2/

Blschue My cleaning supplies sit around and do nothing also. I just hate that. I have thought about trying to train my cats to clean but they are so uncooperative!

Rues That was very nice of your sis to save the deer. I can't imagine the deer eating the mums. I didn't think they liked them. You said Kansas City looks nice and lots to do here. You're right but it's a secret that we don't want too many folks to know. Especially those New Yorkers. People are always surprised when they come here for the first time because it really is a beautiful city. Our art museum has changed their lighting for the World Series. The second picture is a sculpture on the art gallery grounds. And, yes, it is a big badminton birdie. They are 17 ft tall. We have 3 of them! LOL! In the background you can see the twin American Century Investments towers.

Obsver What are you up to?

Several law enforcement agencies in the area are allowing their officers to wear Royals hats during the Series. This is the hat the Clay County Sheriff's Department will be wearing. This is one of their dog officers.

This blurry pic is from the Bison cams on Explor.org. It was so windy that the camera was moving. I couldn't watch for long.Lots of prairie here! This is Grasslands National Park in Saskatchewan. Sometimes they show the prairie dog towns on one of these cams too.

This juvie eagle was just sitting around at Katmai on Saturday.

This polar bear was napping on the Polar Bears cams on Explore.org. Another one I couldn't watch for long because of the wind moving the camera. Makes me seasick!

Honey getting fed on Saturday. I would like to be the bear feeder!

Bei Bei's mom won't be able to find him under all that bamboo. I don't know if she put it in the den or if the keepers did it.

This bird picture made me smile. I have never seen these before. They are beautiful! They are Rainbow Lorikeets. They are a wild parrot from Australia.

Hi to Willi, Pat, Nora, Neva, Chippy, Deb, Eaglette, BH, and all who visit here. Have a great evening!

Hi Jewelies!  Rainy, cool, and cloudy here today.  Supposed to be a repeat tomorrow...  I was supposed to work today, early at the offices, but I didn't sleep much and feel worse today than yesterday.  Nasty cold.  I've already called and cancelled work tomorrow... we'll see about Wednesday.  I hope I feel better this weekend... we have another competition to go to on Saturday.  Hope it isn't too late, being Halloween and all.  I just heard that the time changes this weekend, too.

JP... You ate those finger hot dogs??  Ewww!!  lol

cal... Did you see Clemson is up to Number 3 in the country now??  How cool is that?!!  I packaged up the girls' Halloween candy today... that way, I won't eat it!  lol  Gum, Halloween peeps, gummy savers, and lots of different chocolate bars that kids with braces can eat.  That bear with the hairless face looked like it was related to Scout.  lol  We had goats in MI and in the winter we didn't worry about them getting cold.  They grew winter coats like the horses.  Are you supposed to get any rain from Patricia?  We are.

dlong... You make me tired with all you are doing these days!  Glad you're feeling so much better!  Your pics and videos are great!  Pumpkin donuts are awesome!  Love them!  I also like pumpkin spice Hershey's kisses, but haven't found them yet this year.  You moved out just in time, didn't you?  Wow.   I wonder what all those vultures in one place find to eat... Love all your pics!  thanks! I think I saw one of those lorikeets in the Sydney sea eagle nest.  Pretty birds!  I just did a puzzle on Jigzone of one!

rues... I have those stupid stink bugs, too.  I haven't seen a single lady bug this year... wonder why.  Blindspot tonight.  I once planted some pansies in one of my backyard flower beds, probably the first year I lived here.  The next day all the plants had been chewed down to the ground and there was a big bunny rolling in the dirt!  That was the last time I planted pansies!  lol  I see that deer have been my yard a lot, but I never see that they have bothered any of my plants.  Maybe I have so many plants that I just don't notice!  lol

Hi willi and Nora!  BH, you still hanging around?  Don't be afraid to post!   :D  Hi to everyone else, too!

Whew! I really had a hard time with that finger hot dog puzzle! But I eventually got it finished! :D

Cal, Sweets would look adorable in a sweater! You must take a pic of him if he gets one! Got to remember Big Bang on tonight in less than an hour! I have the hardest time remembering that it's on Mondays. Never got to watch last weeks on my iPad because my CBS app said I had to pay for it! I refuse to pay!! Crow said I could watch it on his tv because he has that on demand thing. Just never got around to it. That new show called Supergirl comes on after BBT. That was so nice of you to rescue Tripod!

Jp, glad you are better today! Do you check and make sure the cleaning lady did a thorough job? That poor bear with the balding face!

Dlong, wonderful pics! Those lorikeets are beautiful! What's the reason for the badminton birdies? Very pretty city! And the cutest police dog with his cap on! How nice that you and an old friend reconnected! Every once in awhile my childhood best friend/next door neighbor and I see each other in Walmart. I'm 2 years older and I knew her from birth. We were inseparable as kids. We always say we should get together for lunch but we never do. That donut looks yummy! I bought a package of pumpkin bagels today. They smell so good. Can't wait to eat one for breakfast tomorrow! Can't imagine losing $14000 in a bet!!

Ra, shoot, I was hoping you felt better today! If you feel bad then it just might as well be lousy outside! We are expecting rain tomorrow and Wed from Patricia. They say 80 to 100%. The leaves look so pretty now. The wind and rain will surely bring them all down!   Hopefully you will feel like going to the cheer comp this weekend! Maybe with you being there it will bring good luck to the squad!

Obsver, what's up? Got your heated mattress pad on yet? I still haven't bought one yet!

rues... You should really, really get a heated mattress pad!  I use it to warm up the bed when my feet are cold, or to soothe my aching back.  I love it!  We found out tonight that the cheer team had 30 points taken off their score for the top girl in a pyramid putting her hand in the other girls hand instead of her foot.  Or, maybe it was the other way around.  But, it was a safety issue.  If they had those 30 points, they would have won the competition!!  It was a learning experience for them.

Nite, cal!   :D

Hi, Jewelies!--just took a little break. I'm Oversugared just reading about all the candy in your posts! We teachers always had the parties on Fridays so the parents could deal with the Oversugaredness (cal, how about THAT word!) of the kids on Saturdays. There was sooooo much Halloween candy!!  Went to Sam's club today--no snacks, just blueberries, kleenx, etc. Lunch at Panera Breads. Ra, I'd bring you some hot soup and a huge jar of Vicks if I could. Rues, you really would enjoy a heated mattress pad and so would everyone else except you, cal. You have your dogs to heat up the bed, and you, jp, since your climate is so warm. I have mine turned on right now. Cal, how is that toe? Mr. o loved your reaction when the doc. asked if you should take more antibiotics. I read him all your funny posts. Nora, I would not like to see a bear on my deck!! Dlong, so thankful you moved!!!  We so want you safe and feeling good!!!   All the soy beans here have been combined, and now the farmers are trying to finish up the corn. Got another really good haircut, life is good.

Hi obsver!  Good to see you!  I wish you could bring me some soup, too!  Sounds better than what I've been eating... sloppy joes and cheerios!  lol  And, let's not forget the Halloween candy!   ;D  Tonight, I'm going to put some Vicks on the bottom of my feet, so I don't cough all night like I did last night!  I had to ask my daughter today what it was that we put on the bottom of our feet... I couldn't remember if it was one of her oils or something else.  Now, I know!  Halloween on Saturday this year will help all the teachers, right?   ;)

ra, most schools don't celebrate Halloween anymore.  Mine stopped several years before I retired. Does your daughter's?

I think it's a fall festival, mostly, but they still dress up.  That is... unless there is a student in a classroom whose religion interferes with them celebrating.

Jewel with her second litter.  Mikah, Nate and Scott.

I am well-rested and looking for the first game of the World Series tonight.  I hope the weather cooperates.

dlong, those pumpkin donuts sound so good.  I am going to get a couple today and try them out.  I agree with you, too, about Maureen O'Hara and "The Quiet Man".  One of my favorite Wayne/O'Hara pictures is "McClintock".  Your pictures are great and yes, those Rainbow Lorikeets are beautiful.

I like this time of year.  Denny's has pumpkin and pecan pie on their menu now.  m-m-m-m.   You know it is Fall here as, yesterday, I saw the first of our winter visiting turkey vultures soaring in our sky.

ra, sorry you are down and I send prayers for your improvement.  Good to see Clemson up there near the fop of the ratings.  The University of Miami fired their coach.  He had been on the hot seat for some time and that loss was the straw.

To be honest about the hot dog puzzle.  I did not realize the hot dogs were fingers.  I have to mark that up to a severe case of malobservance.  Must be an aging condition.

All of you have a top notch day.  Good spirit, good health, good weather and good food.

Frost, Mystic Lake, and Florida Bear Hunt - UPDATE October 26, 2015

Deadman Lake
Deadman Lake
As the fog dissipated this morning, frost clung to vegetation for a few more minutes. The lakes were mirror calm.

The Florida Hunt that ended with around 300 bears taken generated some calls as it has from the media along the way. An email I sent out covered a lot of the questions:

Trying to control negative bear-human interactions with a hunt is like trying to control crime by shooting into a crowd.

Non-lethal methods cost money, a hunt makes money.

Whether a person considers interactions positive or negative depends upon the person?s attitude. Attitude depends upon what people have been taught. I happen to know that Florida?s Bear Manager David Telesco is quick to claim public safety issues.

Frost on sedges
Frost on sedges
Many bear managers deal with bear issues by killing the bears to avoid any possibility of liability issues.

From my studies, human-bear interactions that people consider negative are greatly reduced as attitudes change with true education?not fear-mongering and repeating old misconceptions as ?education.?

I know of no data that shows negative conditioning of bears (making them fear people) reduces attacks.

In years of moderately scarce natural foods, reducing attractants (bird feeders, garbage, etc.) works because there is some food in the woods for them to go back to.

In years of very scarce natural food, (as I believe was the case this past year but I?m not sure it was Florida that I heard that about), people have a choice between shooting and diversionary feeding. Diversionary feeding has proved very effective in the few places it has been tried.

I got the full scoop on how to register for the Get-together at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake, MN, noon to 5 on Saturday, November 7. It?s $30 to cover the food. Here are the steps.

For people who want to attend and already have a PayPal account, here?s what to do:

Step 1: Go to www.paypal.com

Step 2: Log into your PayPal account

Step 3: At the top right, click on ?Pay or Send Money?

Step 4: Choose the option ?Send money to friends or family?

Step 5: In the box where it says ?Email, Mobile Number, or Name? type [email protected] and click on the blue ?Next? button.

Step 6: Using your mouse, enter the dollar amount you want to send. (The cost is $30 per person.) In the box below, you may also enter a note for the recipient

Step 7: Click on Continue

Step 8: Confirm you?ve entered the information above correctly and then click on the blue ?Send Money Now?

A confirmation will appear when the funds have been sent.

Looking forward to it.

Ember is still coming and going from her den, but she is consistent, so we believe she will den there.

Thank you for all you do.

Wow that was a lot of bears killed, when there are other means that's so wrong  :(

We're up to 51, but cloudy and that SE wind feels cold, maybe because it feels damp too, even though it isn't raining.  It looks like it's TRYING to brighten up a bit out there this noon.

Just got back from a mile walk and am having a sandwich, didn't make our 1 1/2 miles like yesterday.

Hi Nora, how are you and Joe and Sparky?
