Hi Jewelies! Rainy and cold outside today! Went to Robin's this morning to clean and mostly to play with Wilson and Tela! Tela doesn't like the sweeper! She ran and hid! Wilson just follows me from room to room. He has never been afraid of the sweeper. Told Robin I'm going to need a raise in pay because I have one more room to clean since the basement bathroom is finally finished!  :D

Cal, I had BBT on but I was only half listening to it because I was also working on Ancestry and got so engrossed in finding a second great aunt that lived and died in Hartford, Kansas. That's in Lyon Co. Do you know that area? I sort of got the idea that Amy had been communicating with someone online and the others were not aware of that until the end of the show. Why would that guy put a mom tattoo on his leg if he had just killed her? What a horrible son. I had seen on the news about the bear kill in FL. So sad.  :(  The farm stand where we get all our summer veggies uses one of those card reader things. Before that you had to pay with cash or check. It's so much more convenient now with that reader thing! Do you have to pay a fee to the credit card companies to use it?

Nora, a mile walk sounds good to me! Did you bundle up for your walk? Are your leaves at peak or have they all fallen now?

Jp, I love that pic of Jewel and her kids! Hope she heals this winter. Funny we know it's fall because our  turkey vultures leave and you know it's fall because they arrive!

Obsver, yay you are back! Glad you weren't ill! Are the shingles all gone? Crow is going to get his shingle shot this week sometime. His insurance told him to get it at a drug store or Kmart etc because it would be cheaper there than at our doctor's office. I think he said it would be $45 and double that at our doctor.  I noticed on our drive up the river last Friday that the corn and soybeans have not been combined yet in the 2 fields we pass by!  :D  Last Tuesday Anne cut my left sideburn shorter than the right! But then we went out to breakfast! That was good! :D

Ra, oh my gosh, your grand's squad would have won! Well, at least now they know what not to do!
I'll look tomorrow at Walmart to see if they have a heated mattress pad! Feeing any better today? Hope so!

I did the Royals arrowhead in 4:38.  I rooted for them all the way through the playoffs but now, cal, I will be cheering for the Mets as they are from the NL East (which is the Marlins division).  I hope it is a 7 game series and all games are tight and not blowouts.

Pumpkin donuts were good.  Tomorrow lunch I'll get pecan pie.

Hi Jewelies!  Another chilly, rainy day here.  Good weather to stay inside!  Last night before I went to bed, I put some Vicks on the bottom of my feet and i slept for OVER 10 HOURS STRAIGHT!!  Guess it worked!  lol  I feel better today, but still sneezing some and coughing a little.  Waiting to hear from tomorrow's customers to see if I have to work tomorrow.  If it was me, I'd tell them to stay away with their germs!

JP... I heard that Miami's coach was fired.  I noticed that during the game it seemed like everyone was avoiding him.  Could have been a coincidence, but every time they showed him, he seemed to be apart from the rest of the coaches and team.  Not like Dabo Sweeney... he's always surrounded by a group of guys. Now I'm really hungry for some pumpkin donuts!!  Lucky you!   ;)

rues...  You've got my same weather.  How do you pronounce Tela?  My cats don't like the vacuum either... Lily especially.  I try to vacuum when she's outside, but she always to refuse to come in for at least 3 hours after I'm done.  lol  Glad Robin's bathroom is done now.  Any more projects at her house?

cal... Glad you got your card reader installed.  That will be so much easier!  Seems like cards are here to stay... one of my business customers always paid me in cash, but now they said they don't take in hardly any cash, so have to pay me with a check.  I see on tv the phones that you can pay and receive money on, but my phone is too dumb to do that!  lol  Or, maybe it's the operator!  lol  So, you've got the same weather as rues and I do.  Glad you didn't have to go out today.  Say hi to Polly for me when she gets there.  When I first read about that guy who killed his mother, I thought he was taking off the tattoo that said Mom, but after rues said something about it, I went back and see it looks like he was putting it ON!!  He doesn't look crazy, does he?  Guess you never know... I just can't imagine killing an animal, let alone your mother.  I didn't know that McDonald's had pumpkin pies... I just might have to check them out...   :D I can see why Sydney is a flyer, if she only weighs 3 pounds!!  lol  My grand is a base sometimes now, she's really grown in the past year!  At the football games she's a flyer a lot of the time though...  Go Royals tonight!!

Hi willi and Nora and everyone else reading here!   :D

Hi Jewelies. What an evening we just had. Robin came for dinner tonight because I made chili. She loves my chili. After dinner around 5:30 Molly started barking. She was standing on my bed looking out the window at someone out front of the house. Since Robin and I were clearing off the table I asked Crow to go  close the bedroom window blinds so Molly would shut up. About an hour later Robin left to go home. Her car was parked in the street in front of the house. That's when she found her driver side window smashed in and her purse stolen from the backseat of her car! It had been raining and her car was wet inside, her brand new 2 week old car! Called the police and the officer arrived in about 10 minutes. The first thing he asked her  was did she think it was one of her clients. Well, no, she didn't think so. He asked us if we had seen anyone suspicious looking. That's when Crow said yeah, when he went to close the blind because Molly was barking he saw a guy walking his bike past Robin's car, then the guy doubled back and then still walking his bike, he walked on down the street. He said he had something like a book bag on the handle bars! Didn't pay any attention to what the guy looked like. That was probably the thief!  After the cop left, Robin came inside and called her bank, credit cards and her pharmacy because she had two prescriptions in her bag. She also had about $100 in cash in her wallet. Now this week she has to get the window replaced, get a new driver's license, bank card, Blue Cross insurance card and WV Bar card. She can't visit any of her clients in jail without her bar card! I didn't say it but I thought it....how many times have I told you not to leave your purse in your car? We always think our neighborhood is immune to things like this but we are wrong. Our street is a busy street with nosey neighbors. How did someone break a car window and no one including us not hear or see something? If we had only payed attention to Molly's barking! Live and learn! I bet Robin never leaves her purse in the car again. She loved that purse. It was her first Dooney and Bourke bag that she bought with her own money way back when she was a law clerk. Since it was raining so hard her car is in our garage and she is driving our truck!

Ra, Tela is pronounced like tea la. Wilson and Tela are characters in a Phish song.

Cal, hope your team is winning!  Oh, just heard it's a tie game!

Going to bed now. I know I'll toss and turn wondering who the thief is and where is that purse? Cop said it was probably tossed because all the thief was looking for was money and drugs. Hope some good person finds the purse and turns it in. I could pull my hair out! Night all.

What a nightmare, rues!!  Yes, I bet Robin has learned her lesson about leaving her purse in the car.  I hope someone finds her wallet and purse and returns it.  Maybe they took the money and credit cards and pills and tossed the purse in a dumpster.  That's what they do on tv.  At least, they didn't steal the car...  Hope you can sleep!

Honey cooling off in the pond.

An oversleep.  I could not stay up any longer so left the game at 12:30 at the start of the 11th inning.  A good game, two teams evenly matched, good pitching  and spectacular  fielding plays.  What a thrill for the home crowd to get a walk-off in the 14th inning.  As I said, good to have close games but let us hope the extra innings do not become a habit with this year's games.  Good for the Royals.

Good Wednesday thoughts to all of you.

Cubs, Wolves, and a Story - UPDATE October 27, 2015

Cute cub - WRI file photo
Cute cub - WRI file photo
Calls and emails the last couple days were about what to do with orphaned cubs in the aftermath of Florida?s 2-day bear hunt. The cubs are nearly 9 months old. Should they be left in the wild or put in captivity? Either choice has a downside. I said I didn?t know enough about Florida bears to say for sure, but from my studies in the Great Lakes Area, they?d probably do best left alone at that age to learn the forest and be free to roam. They probably already know about snakes and alligators, although accidental deaths (not from starvation or freezing) were more common in Minnesota among orphans than cubs with their mothers.

But what about making dens? I don?t know if they need dens in Florida. Orphans that I radio-collared in Minnesota made good dens on their own even though their mothers would normally do most of the work.

I don?t know how fat cubs should be at this time of year in Florida and what they eat in the wild overwinter. I know bears can recognize edible foods without being taught.

I know some bears slow down and spend a lot of time in surface beds there in winter, but researchers who tried to sneak close didn?t get to see them because they were alert and wary.

Black MacKensie in birches - WRI file photo
Looking through birches - WRI file photo
The biggest downsides of captivity are that, depending on the captive conditions, they likely won?t learn much and boredom can lead to captive psychoses like pacing and other repetitive movements. Orphaning is a problem with bear-hunting. I?m glad I successfully fought spring hunts in Minnesota and Ontario. No orphans can survive in the wild at that time. Now Ontario is considering a spring hunt again. When they ended their previous spring hunt in the mid-1990?s, Ontario biologists estimated that 274 cubs were orphaned per hunt.

The cub picture highlights the orphan cub topic but is not from Florida. It is a Minnesota cub from the nineties. The wolf pictures for the next topic were also taken years ago.

Also on the downer side, sensationalistic TV producers are at it again?this time making wolves look bad. I have turned down being in a number of TV programs, including one a couple weeks ago, because I suspected the program would not properly educate. It sounds like the Wolf Center tried to help make a good program by allowing their captive wolves to be filmed, only to learn now that sensationalism became a part of it. I suspect they did not know the title would be ?Natural Born Monsters.?

?The International Wolf Center is disappointed with a TV show being aired on The Weather Channel tonight at 10:00 p.m. EST, titled ?Natural Born Monsters.? Earlier today, the Center?s leadership had the opportunity to preview tonight?s episode that showcases wolves living in northern Minnesota, including footage taken onsite last winter at our Interpretive Center in Ely. In this episode, a significant number of distortions and misrepresentations are being made about wolves by the show?s host, Sean Duggan. Shows like this rely on dramatic sensationalism to boost ratings and revenue, but confuse the public and do great disservice to the many biologists, organizations, naturalists, and others who work on behalf of animals around the world.?

I don?t know if critical letters to The Weather Channel would do any good if their producers only care about ratings and revenue.

On the happy side, these pictures of a leopard seal in Antarctica make us want to know more about the feelings and thoughts of animals. http://www.rense.com/general96/diver.html

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! I'm in a better mood today although I hardly slept! The Subaru dealer has ordered a new window and it will be overnighted tonight. The dealer said they would try and work the car in tomorrow afternoon. The window costs $300 and $35 extra for overnight delivery. I swear it's one thing or another drama in this family!

Cal, yay for your Royals! Crow watched it until he fell asleep around 11:30. Crow said there was a blackout! Was that weather related?   After the cop left last night, Robin and I drove around the area looking for her purse. Since the cop said that the purse was probably tossed we drove up and down streets and alleys looking for it but it was raining and it was so dark that we finally gave up. In part of the neighborhood today is trash pick up day so there were lots of trash cans sitting out. We peeked in a few but gave up on that. Went over to our little city park and checked in the trash cans there, too. We came home wet and frustrated. Robin said she hardly slept and then when she did fall asleep little Tela was batting at her face wanting to play!  That FL hunt makes me furious! What is wrong with people? Sounds like the Weather Channel was a little deceptive. I won't watch that program. Glad that Babe was finally able to sleep. Hope you can catch some needed sleep today so you will be ready for tonight's game!

Jp, love Honey in the pond!

Ra, we are hoping someone finds the purse and turns it in at the police station! If not, she has found a replacement one on EBay! She figures the purse is ruined if it was tossed. It's suede and it has rained constantly! Maybe if the guy had tried to steal the car at least the alarm would have sounded!

Hi Willi!

Hi Jewelies!  :)

Gosh, I sure didn't want to get up this morning after staying up for the whole game. But it was a great game! I finally broke down an turned on the furnace last night when I was watching the game. I got cold and so did the kitties. They were happy I turned it on.
Someone posted this on Facebook this morning and I thought of you guys. You all have such a yen for sweets, well, except Cal doesn't like chocolate.

Cal That frost picture in yesterday's update was so pretty and the little bear cub was very cute today. That black wolf was beautiful. Do you ever have wolves around your area? I wonder why they call that lake up there Deadman's Lake. Do you think there was a dead person in it? Anyway, that crazy guy that killed his mom was really something. There are sure a lot of insane people running around these days.

JP So did you get your doughnuts the other day? Fall is my favorite season and October is my favorite month. McClintock was a good movie too. She was in a lot of good movies. I always wanted my hair to be the color of hers. Too bad the game was too long for you to finish it. I'm sorry I stayed up so late but I did enjoy the game.

Rues That's awful about Robin's theft! I'm always extremely careful with my purse. I never put it anywhere I can't touch it if I'm out in public. My paranoia comes from having been married to a cop. Inside a store I may rest it in the cart but the strap is in my hand. I don't put it in the car even to load my groceries. That's a thing with thieves; they watch for you to put it in the seat while you load stuff in the car and they just reach in and grab it. Same thing when you are getting gas; I keep it with me. It's a good thing her keys weren't in the purse or she would have to change all her locks. Oh, just saw your new post. I don't like Fox at all. The blackout was because their generator died in their truck that is here in Kansas City that streams the video. Then for part of the time, Google Fiber locally had a problem and some people were without TV or internet for 3 hours!

Rues, you asked about the big badminton birdies at our art gallery. They have tons of sculptures of all different styles all around the gallery in a 22 acre sculpture garden. The birdies have been there for years. Most of the sculptures were donated by the Hall family (Hallmark Cards). This is my favorite; it's a newer one:

I like these also:

Rues your aunt lived near the Flint Hills Wildlife Refuge in Hartford. That's a beautiful area! Here's a link to some info about it. http://www.fws.gov/refuge/flint_hills/

Ra How are you feeling today? I hope you are lots better.I didn't know bunnies liked pansies. I thought of you when I saw this picture. It's the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel that goes from Newport News, Virginia to Suffolk. I have no problem with bridges, but the tunnel part is not for me! Do you think you could make it to the tunnel on the bridge part?

Willi Glad you made it to the 11th inning at least. Glad you are cheering for the Royals! And my pumpkin doughnuts were delicious. I got another one yesterday.  :o

Obsver Can't imagine a worse thing for a teacher than a bunch of oversurgared kids! Yikes! It's been a long time since they stopped the holiday parties around here. They just do seasonal things now. I would like to have a bear on my porch! I would say"Hi, it's me, bear" and everything would be fine. LOL! I don't want a heated mattress cover either. I had an electric blanket once and my first ex-husband got to have it all to himself after the first night. It was way too warm for me. I have always slept with the window open just a tiny bit. I can't sleep at all if the blankets are too heavy. I think that's a throwback to when I was a kid. My grandmother used to nearly smother us all with her handmade down comforters. There was one under you and one on top of you! You can disappear into those things and never get out.

Nora We are in for more chilly weather & dampness too. Doing a mile walk is really good for you. I used to walk a lot before my hip went bad on me.

Here's Ted from yesterday.Still awake!

Some screen captures and Facebook photos of Mei Lun & Mei Huan from yesterday & today.

This little guy needs a pumpkin doughnut!

Hi to Pat, Neva, Chippy, Deb, Blschue, BH, Eaglette and all who visit here. Have a great day and if you don't mind, cheer for the Royals tonight!  :)

Hi Jewelies!  Another rainy day here, but looks brighter, so maybe it'll clear up.  I decided I'm working tomorrow... tired of sitting around!  lol  My daughter called and she said she was thinking of coming over this afternoon, but after she heard what I sound like, she decided she'd pass...   :(  No Mexican tonight either.  She spent most of the day yesterday with her dad/my ex, taking him to eye doctors.  He has macular degeneration and said that he had a dark place in one of his eyes.  She took him to the regular eye doctor and he passed him on to a specialist in Anderson.  The specialist said it wasn't his macular degeneration that was the problem... he had a stroke!!  Then, he had to go to the hospital for tests... still waiting for results. He's almost 70.  Daughter is pretty stressed.

rues... You'd think that the alarm would have gone off on Robin's car when the window was broken!!  Hadn't thought of that.  Glad she could find a replacement for her purse on Ebay. Too bad you guys didn't find it last night... you may have been able to recover something from inside it!!  Wonder why they can't replace a side window like they can a windshield... you see the ads on tv about them coming right out.  Won't her insurance pay for it?

cal... Last I checked on your game last night the score was 4-3 in the 9th,  Royals down.  Glad they won!  Poor Babe... you're right she needs to sleep, so YOU can sleep, too!  It's no wonder people don't have the facts about bears and wolves when they have a special on tv and they turn the facts all around for ratings.  Calling them monsters is just wrong!

JP... I was wondering... you talked about a "walk-off" in the game last night.  What does that mean?  Don't know if I've ever heard that term.  Glad you finally got to post a recent pic on Jigzone!  Thanks!

dlong... The sculptures are very cool!  Interesting, too.  Makes a person, like me, with a vivid imagination see all kinds of possibilities.  lol  I KNEW chocolate was good for me!!  I just knew it!!  lol  When I'm unloading groceries into my car, I put my purse on the front seat, but use my key in my hand to lock the doors.  That way I don't lock the keys in, and nobody can open any of the other doors.  I guess a thief could knock me out of the way and still get it, but I've already spent all my money in the store!  No, I couldn't do that bridge/tunnel... I posted a video of it a couple of months ago that someone took while they were on it.  Took them almost 30 minutes!  Nope, not me.  No, thanks.  Love the pics today, as usual... Thanks!  Funny, all the different stuff they give the pandas to play with!

Hope everyone is having a good day!

I forgot to tell you; the Toronto Zoo has a new set of twin pandas born on 10/16 I think. Here they are:

This is any update on Bei Bei & mom. It talks about something I wonder about sometimes when I see mom moving Bei Bei around or dragging him from one place to another. I guess I shouldn't worry! Look at this face!!:

This panda update was written by keeper Nicole MacCorkle.

Many people have been asking if Mei Xiang is being gentle enough when she moves Bei Bei in and out of the den. Don't worry, she is!

It is difficult to comprehend how a mother panda's jaws, which are able to crush a piece of bamboo with ease, can also be extremely gentle when picking up a cub, but they really are. Mei Xiang is a skilled panda mother, and like other panda mothers, she picks up Bei Bei in her mouth, but doesn't use her teeth.

It certainly appears to be a struggle at times, especially as Bei Bei gets bigger and less cooperative. While it looks less than graceful (anyone who has tried to carry a sleeping or uncooperative toddler can probably relate), the process is gentler than it looks. Although he is often being pulled across the floor, the floor is smooth and won't hurt him. Also, remember that panda cubs are sturdy little creatures, and Bei Bei even more so than his older siblings before him!

If you're wondering if Mei Xiang has brought Bei Bei outside the den earlier than she did with Bao Bao or Tai Shan, you're right! Mei Xiang is more experienced with each cub, and like any experienced mother, she tends to push each milestone a bit earlier.

Tai Shan was first out of the den at about three and a half months of age. Bao Bao was moved from the den for the first time at about two-and-a-half months. Bei Bei was first brought out of the den when he was about a month-and-a-half old.

It is always tricky to make an assumption about why an animal chooses to do something, like take her cub on a short trip outside of the den. In this case, though, our best guess is that Mei moves the cubs out of the den to introduce them to the world outside of the place they were born. And she has moved each cub when she feels that they are ready for that developmental milestone.

Every giant panda is an individual, and other females may choose to do things at a different pace from Mei. However, she has proven her competence as a mother over and over again, so we let her lead us in the best way to manage her cubs.
