I'm old, but not senile.  Most of my friends are old, too.  I'd like to know how anyone can work the puzzle, in 51 crazy, in 2:31.  I think their clock is defective.  My time was 4:21

An unidentified bear with an itchy back.

Well, a lot of football games yesterday and not one team that I really root for won a game.  Some did not play but others did not play well.  I think that Miami should drop their football program.  Our local community college could beat them and it does not even have a football team.

I am not feeling very good this morning.  Not because of the football fiasco,  it is a physical condition of some sort.   So, let me pass along my wishes for all to have a lovely Sunday.

Jewel, Sturbridge, Shakopee, and GiveMN - UPDATE October 24, 2015

Tree SparrowInquiring Lily Fans want to know more about Jewel. I checked our notes, checked with the note-takers, checked my camera, and checked with feeding stations she might have visited.

Jewel seldom comes to the WRI, but she was here daily August 16-19 and was fine. The last time she was seen at the feeding stations I checked with was August 25, and those feeders didn?t notice a wound. But when she came here the evening of August 31, three of us immediately noticed the drainage on her left side. Two of us happened to be looking when she twisted right, spreading the fur on her left side and revealing a wound that had a round opening, about one-inch diameter into her abdominal cavity. The organs I saw looked intact.

Jewel's Wound on 8/31/15She behaved as if the wound didn?t bother her. I had never seen a wound like this before and was shocked. But I know bears? healing power and resistance to infection. There was nothing we could do. She left shortly. Even if she returned, we are not allowed to capture and tranquilize bears for a thorough examination. Antibiotic courses require daily doses, and without radio-collars we wouldn?t be able to find her. It was the day before hunting season, but we have seen bears shot the day before season. That?s how big Lumpy died. But this wound was too big for a bullet and the hole into the abdominal cavity is too round for a broadhead arrow and the organs that were visible showed no injury. I?ve never seen a wound like hers and don?t know what caused it.

She seemed fine, but I made a mental note that if she didn?t show up next year I?d suspect the wound was the cause. I?m glad we know where she is denning. If we can place and maintain a Den Cam, we?ll see how she deals with it. Otherwise, we?ll check to see if she has cubs and if all goes well, as we expect it will. With mixed feelings, I included a picture of the wound. I didn?t get a picture the moment when the wound was open. I hope we get a chance to examine and photograph the wound in the spring when she emerges, hopefully with cubs.

Out the window, tree sparrows (Spizelloides arborea), are migrating through from their summer range 500 to 1,000 miles or more north of here to their winter range in southern Minnesota to as far south as northern Texas. This pretty sparrow is easily identified by its rufous back, wing bars, and single breast spot.

Lily Fans gathered today in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and will be gathering at the Mystic Bay Casino and Hotel in Prior Lake, Minnesota on Saturday, November 7 noon to 5 PM. https://www.facebook.com/events/540693516083617/ . The last day to confirm via payment ($30) is October 31. Donna and I are looking forward to it. Organizer Sarah Zirbes says to use PayPal at [email protected] and choose ?Send money to Family or Friends,? otherwise a fee will be taken out and she couldn?t wouldn't be able to recover the cost of the food for the event.

GiveMN is coming up November 12.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning Jewelies! After a rainy, cold Saturday, today the sun is shining! Going with Robin today to buy candy for Trick or treat. If I buy Halloween candy too soon, Crow eats it all! Since I'll be treating at Robin's house, I just better leave the candy with her! That way her dad can't get his mitts on it! :D

Cal, Jewel's wound looks awful. Hope she is ok. What a shame that Dr Rogers can't help her.  Did the horse's wound take long to heal?  Remember the injured deer in my sister's neighborhood, the one with the broken leg that was broken a couple years ago?  Well, the other day my sis saw a couple sheriff deputies running thru her yard with rifles! They were chasing the deer and we're going to shoot her! My sis ran outside and yelled at them to stop! She explained the deer's injury was an old one and that she had adapted to it, even having a couple babies. They thought she had just been hit by a car and we're going to put her out of her misery! They said if she was ok then they would leave her alone. My sis said she looks out for her and when and if the time comes she feels the deer isn't doing well she'll give the Sheriff a call.  I sure wouldn't want to smell that dog shame's breath! Very pretty glass pumpkin in the puzzle!  I've been over sugared before, too! Sounds like a word to me! :D

Jp, I've seen Crow rub his back like that bear is doing! But he uses the door frame not a tree!  :D Hope you feel better soon!

Ra, hope you are feeling better today. How did the cheer competition go? Hope your daughter took lots of pics for you.

Hope everyone has a nice Sunday!  :)

Hi Jewelies!  Cold, damp, dreary day here today.

rues... I'm still feeling yucky... thanks for asking.  The cheerleaders didn't do very well... came in last.  But, it was their first competition, so they shouldn't expect to win it.  Glad your sis was home to stop the deputies from shooting her deer.  I understand about buying Halloween candy too soon... I'm on my second bag now.  lol

cal... Hate to see Jewel's wound.  Wonder how she got it...  Hope your stomach is better!

JP... Hope you're feeling better, too!  Bunch of sickies here today.

Have a good day, Jewelies!  Hi to all!

HI cal!  lol  I don't get any trick-or-treaters, but I have candy... just in case!  I think this will be the first year that neither of my grands goes out.  I always give them a bag of candy though... my daughter, too.  A sweet tooth runs in the family!  lol  My mom always had a stash of candy hidden somewhere in the house.  When we went through her house, we found candy hidden all over the place!  Her birthday is this Thursday.   :'(

Hi Cal! Crow has diabetes and is supposed to watch his sweets. He watches them all right...watches them go right into his mouth! He didn't want any of the candy Robin bought today because she got the kind she likes...Jolly Rancher suckers and Twizzlers! That's not his idea of Halloween candy! He is a chocoholic and candy bars are his favorite.  I know my crabby sister can sometimes be nice. She is an animal lover that's for sure. She feeds the birds and squirrels in her backyard. And picked apples from my tree to put out for the deer. She's not all bad, I guess! I forgot to mention this... I have 2 concrete planters on each side  of my porch steps with a mum planted in each one. The other morn one of the mums was out of the planter and in the front yard. So I put it back into the planter wondering how it got into the yard. The next morn I looked out and that same mum (it was still in the planter)had all the open flowers eaten off! Thank goodness it still had some buds left on it! There were deer tracks in the mulch!  :o So far the deer hasn't been back to snack on my mums!  :D They were saying around here that the lady bugs weren't as bad this year but the stink bugs sure are!

Hi Ra! Robin's squad never won any competitions but they had fun. They learned some different routines and made new friends. I think the best they ever did was 3rd place.   Sounds like a nice day to snuggle up on the couch, watch some tv and get some rest. Hope you feel better real soon!

Love the bear scratching its back.  We were at a neighbor's for his birthday party Saturday night and his other half's sister & BIL were down from Grand Marais, MN (almost Canadian border and along Lake Superior).  She said one day recently she had her inside door open and realized something was different and looked out and there was a bear on her front porch looking in her screen door.  She's pretty sure there were a couple cubs somewhere, but wasn't positive.

Hope you're feeling better when you see this JP!

Hope you're "normal sugared" now Cal.  That's nice you saved the lady bug.  Oh my word Missy's 11-year-old thinks she's too old to go out trick or treating and is "in love"?!!!

RA sorry you aren't feeling much better and the competition didn't go real well for the kids.

Got a big bag of mini Tootsie Rolls today and also have a bag with packets of animal crackers.  We don't usually get a huge amount of kids and I know that still will go good if there are leftovers.

I use a door frame for my back too.  Joe just looks at me weird and I tell him "hey, it works and I know just what spot to get"  :D

Two unidentified bears, resting.

I am doing better this morning.  That's good because my cleaning lady comers today to do the house so I have to eat early andkl bel here at noon.  Well, the Miami Dulphins broke a team record by scoring 41 points in the first half of their game.  Then a different team (the old one) came out for the second half and that score was 28-3 for the Houston team. Net, however was a win for them so they are 3-3 for the year.

Jewel's wound looks awful.  I can't imagine how she got it but hope her hibernation provides the necessary healing.

Baseball next week means late nights but it helps that the next Sunday we gain back an hour.

Desk Day - UPDATE October 25, 2015

ChickadeeThe social highlights on this desk day were a chickadee looking in the window and calls telling me I made errors in the update last night. We corrected them midday in the update. One error was calling the site of the Lily Fan Gathering coming up on November 7 the Mystic Bay Casino when it is really the Mystic Lake Casino. The other one, the bad one, was giving the wrong email that should have said [email protected].

Thank you for all you do.

I gulped down those hot dogs (baseball game food) in 4:43.  Should have saved them for tomorrow night.
