Jewel, Sturbridge, Shakopee, and GiveMN - UPDATE October 24, 2015
Tree SparrowInquiring Lily Fans want to know more about Jewel. I checked our notes, checked with the note-takers, checked my camera, and checked with feeding stations she might have visited.

Jewel seldom comes to the WRI, but she was here daily August 16-19 and was fine. The last time she was seen at the feeding stations I checked with was August 25, and those feeders didn?t notice a wound. But when she came here the evening of August 31, three of us immediately noticed the drainage on her left side. Two of us happened to be looking when she twisted right, spreading the fur on her left side and revealing a wound that had a round opening, about one-inch diameter into her abdominal cavity. The organs I saw looked intact.

Jewel's Wound on 8/31/15She behaved as if the wound didn?t bother her. I had never seen a wound like this before and was shocked. But I know bears? healing power and resistance to infection. There was nothing we could do. She left shortly. Even if she returned, we are not allowed to capture and tranquilize bears for a thorough examination. Antibiotic courses require daily doses, and without radio-collars we wouldn?t be able to find her. It was the day before hunting season, but we have seen bears shot the day before season. That?s how big Lumpy died. But this wound was too big for a bullet and the hole into the abdominal cavity is too round for a broadhead arrow and the organs that were visible showed no injury. I?ve never seen a wound like hers and don?t know what caused it.
She seemed fine, but I made a mental note that if she didn?t show up next year I?d suspect the wound was the cause. I?m glad we know where she is denning. If we can place and maintain a Den Cam, we?ll see how she deals with it. Otherwise, we?ll check to see if she has cubs and if all goes well, as we expect it will. With mixed feelings, I included a picture of the wound. I didn?t get a picture the moment when the wound was open. I hope we get a chance to examine and photograph the wound in the spring when she emerges, hopefully with cubs.
Out the window, tree sparrows (Spizelloides arborea), are migrating through from their summer range 500 to 1,000 miles or more north of here to their winter range in southern Minnesota to as far south as northern Texas. This pretty sparrow is easily identified by its rufous back, wing bars, and single breast spot.
