The Chase - UPDATE March 6, 2022
Bobcat chasing deer
Bobcat chasing deer
From last night's update, the picture we posted showed the ending of this scene:
https://youtu.be/_BP-do7Oi3M when the bobcat was just disappearing. The first few seconds of this 9-second clip shows something I would not have thought would happen. It goes so fast that we edited the video to show it full speed, then slower and slower yet the next time so you can get a good view of what transpired.
Suddenly, the cat is leaping over the scale and rushing at two scrambling deer that have their tails up. Then it’s over. The cat sees it’s hopeless, sits down, and looks around. As we know from last night, it then just ambled up the driveway and moved on at about 3:30 PM. I was happy this morning to see that the fox came for her goodies.
I didn’t know a little bobcat would go after a deer, but I read now that it can occasionally result in a kill and many meals. Seeing how the bobcat can run and reading what it can do, I can understand why the fox is constantly alert and sometimes vacates for a period of time if the cat comes around. We’ll see if Pretty Girl comes back again tonight. Her food is out and ready.
On another topic, I felt a sad loss today when I learned that Professor Rainer Brocke of the State University of New York passed away last September. He was a friend and mentor and on the Board of Advisors of the North American Bear Center, which his obituary mentions.
