Spring is Coming - UPDATE March 4, 2022
Ted

Spring is coming, and Ted was looking perky and alert last evening when "Taught" caught him in this 4:45-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6DqMZ-Ta58. Males are typically the first to leave their dens, often in mid to late March around here, and they do so with near peak testosterone levels as is described in this paper from 1976 Annual testosterone rhythm in the black bear (Ursus americanus). When they leave also depends on snow depth, though, which looks daunting at this point. Ted and I will both be happy to see the coming warmth and melting.

cousin janice friend

This probably needs to be shared to remind us all.
For those who think Russia is all the way on the other side of the world... remember… it’s only 53 miles at the Bering Strait’s narrowest point(Alaska).

And then there was the Bobcat - UPDATE March 5, 2022
Bobcat
Bobcat
All was normal. The nice fox has been taking her treats overnight unseen. The deer are coming with their big pleading eyes. The usual birds, including over a hundred redpolls, are flicking in as usual. And then Donna, down in the living room, saw the deer bolt with the bobcat spicing things up just outside the window. She yelled for me, and I hurried down not knowing I needed the camera. The bobcat was walking away up the driveway. I hurried, but by the time I could click the bobcat was over 200 feet away rounding the bend. That was the biggest excitement of the day. I wish Pretty Girl would come and top it, but I suspect I’ll just find her drumstick and mini-muffins gone in the morning, if she dares to come at all where the bobcat has been.

Thank you for all you do.

The Chase - UPDATE March 6, 2022
Bobcat chasing deer
Bobcat chasing deer

From last night's update, the picture we posted showed the ending of this scene: https://youtu.be/_BP-do7Oi3M when the bobcat was just disappearing. The first few seconds of this 9-second clip shows something I would not have thought would happen. It goes so fast that we edited the video to show it full speed, then slower and slower yet the next time so you can get a good view of what transpired.

Suddenly, the cat is leaping over the scale and rushing at two scrambling deer that have their tails up. Then it’s over. The cat sees it’s hopeless, sits down, and looks around. As we know from last night, it then just ambled up the driveway and moved on at about 3:30 PM. I was happy this morning to see that the fox came for her goodies.

I didn’t know a little bobcat would go after a deer, but I read now that it can occasionally result in a kill and many meals. Seeing how the bobcat can run and reading what it can do, I can understand why the fox is constantly alert and sometimes vacates for a period of time if the cat comes around. We’ll see if Pretty Girl comes back again tonight. Her food is out and ready.

On another topic, I felt a sad loss today when I learned that Professor Rainer Brocke of the State University of New York passed away last September. He was a friend and mentor and on the Board of Advisors of the North American Bear Center, which his obituary mentions. https://obits.syracuse.com/us/obituaries/syracuse/name/rainer-brocke-obituary?id=21263427 As well, here is a 2011 interview with Dr. Brocke speaking about the history of the Cranberry Lake Biological Station in New York. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z7954fPM7Y

5:20 I love that furry dog.  Spent a little time with Boss at noon.  He is  so good.
Lot of trouble with email again today.  I finally decided it was nothing.  Just did not get any emails to start the week.  I thought it was broken. LOL
Trying to ignore Putin for a few minutes before bedtime.  I will do some solitaire then hiy the sack.
