Hi Cal ...  No wild New Year's parties here …   We'll have some non alcoholic beverage, like the sparking water that tastes like wine, and a dish of lovely pastries, and watching Anderson Cooper on my laptop.  It'll just be the four of us and that is good enough for me.  We used to do more.  On New Year's Day, we'll have a nice dinner.

asha Showing Her Roots - UPDATE December 28, 2021
Tasha
Tasha

In this 8-minute video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBPqyf9gvQY, "Taught" caught Tasha showing her Eastern Deciduous Forest roots. She was venturing out of her den to forage for seeds that she knows drop from the nearby bird feeder. Ted, Lucky, and Holly probably also know about those seeds, but their bodies are on a different schedule. Tasha’s roots are in the eastern deciduous forests of Kentucky where food could very well be available in winter. In the eastern deciduous forest that covers the eastern United States, it can be advantageous for black bears to forage in winter. In years of abundant nutritious hard mast (acorns, beechnuts, or hickory nuts) bears in these areas very often dig through the snow for them throughout the winter. In southern areas without snow, it is even easier to find them.

We don’t know where Ted’s genetics are from, but we know Lucky is from Wisconsin and Holly is from Arkansas where bears carry a lot of genes from many Minnesota bears that were released there in the 1960’s. Bears in northern forests that don’t have hickory or beech trees and have few or no oak trees would be wasting their time and fat looking for food in winter when none is available. Consequently, they rarely venture out of their dens in winter, and in fall they hibernate on schedule even if supplemental food is readily available. Their bodies are telling them they are supposed to hibernate, and they do.

Just to complicate the story, though, we have heard of more bears being spotted this December than ever. It is not because food is available, though. Food was about as scarce as possible this past spring and summer of drought. What are the bears doing out in December in Michigan, Wisconsin, and even here in northeastern Minnesota? We don’t know. There is still more to learn, and we are trying to do that.

Thank you for all you do.

6:21 feet
Only 38° at 9am here
I am sick from visiting Debbie's on Sunday.  Her ex was obviously sick with runny nose and cough all day.  He even put his Kleenex on the table after blowing his nose, and then handled everyone's dishes as he dished out beans and potatoes and ham.  No wonder I am sick.
I just hope Mary stays well.  She was ok yesterday at 6 pm.  Paid $31 for a test kit from Walmart.  Two tests in box.  Both nose swabs are broken next to the cotton ball.  If I put it up my nose I will not be able to get it out. Called Walmart.  They said use a fresh Qtip. I think I will try to locate some kits at the several libraries around here.  They did confirm they usually have them, but did runout before Christmas.  Well I think I will start trying to find some tests now.  CUL EV1 GBU

Scale/feet  19:54   …   56°   (4:41pm}  It rained all last night, off and on and a part of today.  We are expecting more, so they say.

Joho, I'm sorry to hear how your get together turned out, with everyone exposed and getting sick.  How could he have been so thoughtless?  Perhaps that is one of the reasons he is an ex.  Oh well, I should keep my thoughts to myself.  I hope that if you are sick with it, that the vaccinations and boosters will keep it as mild as possible.

Cal, It sounds like Jim's sister does appreciate and care about you.  Those were nice gifts.

Paperwork, Ted, and the Fox - UPDATE December 29, 2021
Red fox "Pretty Girl"
Red fox "Pretty Girl"
On this day of paperwork, good news about Ted and seeing the fox were highlights of the day.

This morning, Scott told me the veterinarians said Ted was doing very well with no infection and everything healed. Let’s go, Ted Bear.

The fox was the other highlight. I’m not the only one excited by her visits. A neighbor maybe a quarter or half mile away, dotes on her visits, too, and calls if she doesn’t show up for a few days. People are calling her “Pretty Girl.” Tonight, she looked dazzling as she came to the window to let me know it was time for action. I went to the door. She met me there briefly before tearing away after a red squirrel. She didn’t have a chance, though. The squirrels watch the fox and eat close enough to a tree that they can easily retreat to safety. Still the fox is intrigued and has caught one that I know of. She pays more attention to them than to me and what I am offering. Finally, though, she gently took my offering, sat down, and ate it on the spot. Every day is a good day.

Thank you for all you do.

Now grand nephew Conner thinks he has it.  Not sure where he is.  His mom and dad are in Florida, but live in NY.  So he might be in NY.

Banana …   27:02      56°   (2:31 pm)   very heavily cloudy over the valley ... looks like it might rain ... maybe snow in the mountains.

Hi Cal  -    What an oasis your barn and home are for your furry and feathered kids.   Do most people put heating and cooling in their barns?  The creatures that find their way to you are very fortunate.

As for the rain we're having right now, we had a good monsoon this past summer, and that was at the end of a twenty year drought.  Now, apparently, we may get our winter rains.  That will be great.  Things have greened up quite a bit.  Many people think of desert as sand dunes, but the Sonoran Desert is a real desert, but not sand dunes ... it can be absolutely beautiful.  The plants here will be at their best.  The big Saguaro cactus are full of water and look fat and healthy.  It the spring, there will be all kinds of blossoms.  The mountains have somewhat of a green look to their usual brownness.  Things will just be growing better and fuller.

I had to wear a sweater when I left the house yesterday, that is rare and enough, after long New England winters as a child, that is a blessing.

Joho -  I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling so sick.   What a disappointment that has to be, as you've been trying to do everything right that we all have been told we should do.  I guess that the thing that we are learning is that all we have done, will for some, keep us out of the hospital and from dying.  I guess for some it will feel like a case of the flu, which is not pleasant at all.  It is still something to be happy about.  Take care.  I hope you feel better soon.

Fun with Fox and Family - UPDATE December 30, 2021
Colleen and fox
Colleen and fox
This morning, I thought I saw the fox come out of the car port. My daughter Colleen, with her curious mind, looked into the garage soon after everyone arrived. She and the family saw the fox sleeping comfortably there out of the snow. Colleen said “Come foxy woxy." The fox looked up, stood up, stretched, and came out. It was snack time. Colleen and Nick took pictures of Heinrik and Gabrielle seeing how close the fox would come. She (the fox) was hesitant about the new situation at first but learned to trust. The fox seems to view this spot as a safe area. The whole scenario was fun for me to watch and was intriguing for them—and maybe for the fox.

I’m looking forward to what might happen in the coming year. Around here, red foxes mate in February and have pups some 52 days later in late March or April. They often use woodchuck holes for raising their 5 to 10 pups, and we have woodchuck holes here sitting empty. No woodchucks this past year. I’d like to see baby foxes (kits) emerge and develop. They nurse for about 10 weeks, which would take them into June or early July. They become independent at about seven months, which would be October or November. It’s possible we’ll see how foxes and bears get along.

We’re crossing our fingers.

Thank you for all you do.
