Pie --   25:49          It's 84° and sunny, with a few straggly little clouds in the sky ...    It is supposed to be 53° tonight.

We had the front door lights off last night and nobody came for trick or treat.  I really enjoyed Halloween when my kids were young, because of their enthusiasm for it.  Now I could take it or leave it.  I did continue to give out candy after my kids were grown, and liked seeing how happy the whole thing made the little ones that came to the door.

Funny story from back then.  About 1958, Larry was stationed on a mountain top in Northern Japan.  It was a Radar Installation/U.S. Air Force. They were keeping an eye on China and the Russians.  It was very cold up there and one of the things he was given was a Parka (Jacket), heavily padded and lined with fur that looked like wolf fur, but wasn't - I don't know what it was.  Larry and I married in 1961 when he was out of the military.  He still had the jacket packed away.  The kids came along, and loved getting costumes ready for  Halloween and on this one particular time, Larry was going to be the one to take them out on a few streets in our neighborhood.  Well, it was decided that Dad needed a costume too.  I made his face up like a werewolf, and he got that jacket out, and put it on ... and with all that wolfy fur sticking out of it, he looked pretty scary.  At a couple of houses that they went to. the people opened the door, took one look at him, and threw the candy at him and our kids, and slammed the door shut.  I don't know if that was good or bad, but it certainly was unforgettable, and funny.

Cal --   I did not invent the 'Grateful Dead's Logo, of course, but for a friend, I did a freehand drawing of it  (Pastel + charcoal)

Hiev1,
Long pleasant road  trip today.  Lots of natural beauty that will be gone in a few days.  Speaking of beauty.  Wow Neva, that skull has a lot going for it.  One would not usually see such beauty in such a subject, but I sure see it in your painting.
Go chiefs.  For Cal.
Yes, the Browns gave it away in the end. too bad, and to the Steelers our closest enemy. and long time rival. Darn!
Tired now see you all tomorrow. God Bless and Good night.

Snow, Bears, Birds, the Fox, and the Courses - UPDATE November 1, 2021
Visiting bear
Visiting young male bear
Falling snow and temperatures in the low 30’s did not deter two adolescent males who are the only bears still putting in appearances here. We seldom see bears in November but remember the glaring exception of Quill, the lone cub whose last appearance was at 12:07 AM on November 18, 2016. The bears today remained for about an hour and moved on. We’ll see how long that continues.

A surprising bit of action a couple days ago was a blue jay standing up to a same-size sharp-shinned hawk who swooped in for a kill on what looked like an easy target. The jay was peacefully eating sunflower seed hearts on the railing outside my window. Instead of fleeing, the jay lunged toward the hawk with wings spread, and the hawk flared off, landing four feet away. Sharp-shinned hawk 10-30-21

The jay went back to eating while the hawk watched. With its beak full of seeds, the jay flew off with the hawk suddenly in pursuit. The jay dodged around a tree trunk and escaped as is usual. I’ve never seen a capture. The jays dodge back and forth and escape into thick cover. The picture of the hapless hawk is not the best with half its head not showing, but it shows the squared tip of the tail that says ‘sharp-shin,’ the barred breast that says ‘adult,’ and the small size that says ‘male.’ Male sharp-shins are the smallest hawks in North America.

The red fox surprised me today. I had seen a beaver swimming and grabbed my camera. The fox followed briefly but quickly shifted his attention to nearby red squirrels. The photo shows him about to leap into a futile chase. With the wind like it was, it also shows how long his fur is.

The Black Bear Field Courses opened for registration today, making me look forward to the bear enthusiasts add so much to each year.

Thank you for all you do.

8:32 that was a toughie. Lots of snow and turkeys when I checked Snowman cam this morning.  Bears cams too had lots of snow.  GSB cam had snow on "islands in the stream".  Winter is here.  Oh well,  Fall has been very nice to us.
Very nice long ride yesterday down through the hilly part of our area.  Lots of colorful valley vistas, which will be stripped of leaves in the next rain or windy day.  Sitting in the car was not good for me.  Could hardly stand when I got out.  Was better after a few steps though.  So it is OK. I can make it to the gas pumps, etc.  If you know what I mean.  I have small tanks, but it took $42 to fill the gas one.  Really miss those $14 to $20 fill ups.  I have done a lot of needless travel this summer.  Guess I will cut back on some trips to the parks for the winter anyway.
Well 1st of the month bills are waiting.  So here I go.
Better find your shovels EV1. LOL
