4:30 coffee time and bill pay.  I will talk to her about travel and baby sitting.  I am guessing she has enlisted her ex, because he was with her looking at dogs.  He does a lot for her.  They stayed good friends all these many years. About twenty years.
Well GB coffee getting cold.  CUL

PS Hi Judi and other lurkers.  Happy Spring.  Go bears and eagles and falcons.

Cal sounds like Boo had temporary side effects.  Good to hear you are getting some wags.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Trumpeter Swans - UPDATE March 10, 2021
10 March 2021
 Print Email
Trumpeter Swans
Trumpeter Swans

Last night at 9 PM, Pooch Pal managed to capture 9 minutes and 20 seconds of video of Tasha vigorously playing with a log and later some sticks and also climbing the white pine Cub Tree. Tasha obviously has come through the winter with fat and nutrients to spare and an attitude of fun and action. Good to see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIb856Qg00Q People will be guessing how much she weighs and when the official date of emergence is.

Here is a 4 minute 37 second video of Spanky playing around and having a bite or two of fresh fallen snow. https://youtu.be/n2OfG7RkVsU (recorded after Dr. Rogers wrote this update)

Today, on this very overcast day before the snowstorm, Donna and I made out annual visit to the Shagawa River to see the returning Trumpeter Swans. We feel privileged to see them and think about the work by so many to rescue these magnificent birds from the brink of extinction. According to the Trumpeter Swan Society, these birds that once covered much of North America were severely depleted in number by subsistence hunting and over 125 years of commercial swan skin harvest. Many thousands of skins were shipped to Europe between 1772 and the late 1800’s.

In Minnesota beginning in the 1980’s, many people joined a campaign to bring back these awesome birds led my friend and hero Carrol Henderson and funded by Income Tax contributions to the DNR’s Nongame Wildlife Program that Carrol headed.

Across North America, trumpeter swans have increased from 3,700 in 1968 at the time of the first range-wide survey to 63,000 in 2015.

Today, 18 of them, mostly already paired, were in a short open part of the river.

It’s 9 PM. The snowstorm has started.

Thank you for all you do.

6:20 to see Carl is really buff.
Nice day here again.  I may try riding my bike.  I did yesterday, and it did not hurt too much.

Daily Updates
Foot Pads on the Menu - UPDATE March 11, 2021
11 March 2021
 Print Email
Spanky working on his footpads
Spanky working on his footpads

Shortly before 3 PM today, we captured a 10:11-minute video of Spanky nibbling at the foot pad on his right front paw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8_M7ke2fvU. In the last minute of the video, Spanky hits pay dirt. He latches onto a bit of the foot pad and pulls. Suddenly, it pulls free, followed by chewing on what he pulled off his foot. In the spring, one of the things we will look for in his feces will be  sections of his foot pads—as we have found in the feces of other bears in dens. When I wrote up what I had seen, I could find no references to it in modern scientific literature. The only references available regarding my ‘discovery’ were in the very old literature on Native American observations of black bears. They had already seen it all. Mink Guitar
Mink Guitar
Click on the highlighted title for ‘the rest of the story’ as Paul Harvey used to say: Rogers, L. L. 1974. Shedding of foot pads by black bears during denning. Journal of Mammalogy 55(3):672-674.

Out the window, the mink named Guitar stopped by and was good to raise his head and say “It’s me” by showing me his Guitar-shaped chin patch.

Thank you for all you do.
