Good morning everyone-36 here and a beautiful clear sky on the eastern horizon. No wind. Yesterday it flurried on and off with a bit of rain mixed in. today is supposed to be cool but clear.

Trip with sil went fine. We both wore our masks at the hospital- only 2 people we saw has no mask on but all kept a good distance away. It is good to spend time in the car even though I feel like a chauffeur driving Miss Daisy. lol
As soon as I got in the car I took off my mask. It is very hot and my glasses do fog up. We don't make any stops after the bandage change because too many people in too big a grocery store. We and most of my local friends are just going to the small  grocery store here in town.

A friend called last night and told me she had a doctor's appointment on Zoom this week. It was with her cardiologist. It took a little time to get it figured out but she said it went fine. She takes her own blood pressure and the doc said it was a bit high. She said it was from trying to figure out the computer.  lol Doctor laughed too. Anyhow I wonder if that's the way it will be for the time being.
The best news is that I got my mulch yesterday- a huge load!! He delivered it in a dump truck- a small one. Hubby said that looks like more than you've ever gotten before. Last year I got half a load. Well- I have plenty of time to get it done. Will take my time. going to get started today since the weekend weather is for rain and snow. wouldn't it be funny if I have to shovel off snow to put down mulch? Well- maybe not funny!!

Getting light- gotta go!
Have a great day jewelies.

Hi Jewelies!  Nice day today, cooler but sunny!

rues... I think you got the right flower!!  You're good!  I went to our local grocery store on Wednesday and inside the front door there was a kid who asked me what size cart I wanted, then sprayed the whole thing for me.  Good idea.

cal... Yes, Blacklist tonight!  Glad you got Smokey running good!  Is your arm ok after the wind knocked you down?  Time to get out your bubble wrap suit??   ;)  I laughed when you said the dogs were being rowdy and you told them to settle down and they both sat!!  lol  Cookie time, for sure!

lupine... Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead of you!  I used to get my mulch by the truckload, but I don't really have a good place to dump it and had to take care of the whole load in a weekend.  Can't do that anymore,so I just get the bags.

Hi to all!  Have a good evening!

Daily Updates
It?s Hard to Keep a Bear From Being a Bear - UPDATE April 10, 2020
10 April 2020
 Print Email
Last evening, "Happy Cub" caught Tasha being a bear and biting bark. Tasha biting bark
Tasha biting bark
I suspect it is cedar bark because that is the only kind of bark I?ve seen them strip for bedding, and there are cedars in the enclosure. Good catch on the camera. They use it for spring beds out of the den and for bedding in dens.

Robin with earthworm
Robin with earthworm
Yesterday, 9 robins searched for food in the snow free area beside the WRI, and crows were behaving the same in other open patches. I had no idea what they were after. Then a male robin revealed the secret. Earthworms, of course! I just didn?t think they?d be up yet. I suspect some ground thawed with temperatures as high as 54?F. And maybe they got caught up on the surface by the cold that came with the snow storm a couple nights ago. Who knows, but they were catching earthworms on the surface here.

A sign of spring is catkins, an early bear food, developing on quaking aspen trees and willow bushes.

The biggest eye-bugging event today was a mature bald eagle flying in close to the window fully spreading its wings so I was looking at the underside of 6-7 feet of vertical wings wheeling in a sharp turn within 6 feet of my desk window. I was on the phone and not ready. I?d been wondering where the suet was disappearing to. I think the eagle was looking for suet. The camera is at the ready if an eagle ever gives another chance.

It was peaceful to see deer lying on the bare ground chewing their cuds in the yard like I used to see and hear while accompanying deer. The yard here is typical of the places the deer selected back in the old study (1977-1980). Chewing probably interferes with their ability to hear predators, so they selected fairly open upland locations with good visibility all around.

Good morning everyone- just a quick note- I've been out the door at first light and getting a lot done. The mulch is good stuff- hauling by the wheelbarrow and bucket full. I take lots of breaks- chairs on the back porch and in barn garden. I was putting mulch around a huge clump of surprise lilies and uncovered a peonie I planted in 2018. Poor thing was barely visible so I got the shovel and dug out the lily. Whole bucket full of bulbs. Rain coming later today so I need to take care of those bulbs now,

I hope you are all doing well. Getting hungry for lunch already. lol

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Ted, Woodchuck - UPDATE April 11, 2020
11 April 2020
 Print Email
Today started with a brief sleet shower that Ted felt landing on his back (captured by "HappyCub").Ted with sleet
Ted with sleet

Next, a woodchuck stopped up to the second floor deck, but Donna and I didn?t have any broccoli out yet, so it paused briefly for an ID photo, ate a few sunflower seed hearts, and went back to its burrow for more excavation. It paused digging for a moment after rolling out a particularly big stone that is visible behind it. Later in the day, it lay in the sun flattened to the ground and perfectly still about 5 feet from the burrow. Babies come along in April or May, so I hope this is a female that we can watch interacting with them at this very visible burrow.

Deer were busy mowing the lawn on the sunny side of the WRI. Little new blades of grass are now sprouting up there but not elsewhere, so that warm spot is getting a lot of attention. Clumps of a different kind of grass were mowed earlier by them as shown in the picture. Deer have no top incisors, so they bite off grass and other greens by using their lower teeth to bite against a hard plate on the top jaw.

Not much bear action yet. No one around here has seen any, but one was spotted at a bird feeder only 6 miles away on April 5th. Keeping our eyes open.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 48 here- way too warm so rain must be on the way. Snow up north maybe. Ted doesn't look the least upset by the sleet. I recognized the grass the deer browsed. I have lilies in my south flower beds that they eat off every spring. I don't know the botanical name but it is the only plant they eat; well, of course they like tulips but I don't have any of them any more. Friday night I woke up at 12:30 to noises on the back porch. Got up and turned on the light- huge racoon. I had left 2 buckets on the porch and he or she just had to check for goodies. no racoonie- i'm not cal- no cookies! lol

I've made a huge dent in my mulch pile. The two areas that had almost no mulch left are done. I've never really done the asparagus bed right before yesterday. I did see one spear that had broken the ground. Only one. A little rain would be nice now. It drizzled in the afternoon so I finished about 11.
Our grocery in our little town does various things on the grill on Saturdays from April to October so I went in. Wore my mask and got a few groceries too. They grill outside so I got to visit a bit too. The people around in the store and out had masks on and kept the distance from each other. Sanitation stations everywhere for hands and carts!
cal- the Easter bunny on a horse- very funny! lol

I hope everyone is healthy and making the most of this situation.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi EV1,
Happy Easter to you all.  We are isolating even today.  Don't like it, but Debbie will bring some no contact dinner later.  We will be happy just to see her, and maybe Shannon and John.
Joan back in bed suffering from lots of leg pain this morning.  Usually by now she can walk and sit without too much pain.  I am worried it will not get better.  Don't really have anything I can do to help. She has been off Prednisone for 8 days , and pain is coming back strong.  Her doctor suggested adding Plaquenil, but Joan was afraid it will hurt her eyes so has not started yet.  She needs something soon.  The only thing she is taking now is Methotrexate, and it is not enough yet.
Well God bless CUL  Prayers for those suffering today.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter.  We had rain all morning and most of the afternoon and then it turned to snow.  COLD north wind.
