Hi Jewelies! What a beautiful day we had! 85, sunshine and a few wind gusts! We worked outside most of the day and we are both exhausted! Probably got sun burned, too! Almost everyone in the neighborhood mowed today, except us. Crow said he isn't ready to mow yet.  Neighbor across the street mowed again. She mowed yesterday, too! I think there must be something wrong with her. She has some obsession with her riding lawn mower! Good news...a robin built it's nest in the holly tree! I was afraid that no nests would be built in the tree because we cut so much of it off. The robins must not mind! No new virus cases today and no false deaths reported either. Governor says that needs to stop. Apparently there was one other false report of a death but it was caught before it was broadcast to the public.

I'm tired and need a shower! Have a nice safe evening!

Woodchuck eating broccoli
Woodchuck eating broccoli
Here at the WRI out the window the action was woodchucks, Gull 6 O?clock and his mate, a mink, and the first robin I?ve seen this year. 6 O?clock came for fish (pollock) and bologna over and over with his mate in tow. I thought he might follow her; but when he flies, she follows.

On one of his flights to the window, I wondered why 6 O?clock suddenly turned and flew away. Then a mink appeared right where the gull was going to land. The mink grabbed piece after piece of bologna but was never in a position for us to see its markings. Then it went down the steps and off through the woods and disappeared.

The big woodchuck found the smorgasbord we set out for him or her on the second floor deck like last year. This woodchuck is very recognizable from the front by the dot (wound) in the middle of its forehead and from the sides by a patch of light fur on each cheek (not very visible in this picture). You can see the bite out of the piece of broccoli. Its mouth is open because it is chewing the bite of broccoli calmly while looking toward the window that had a burst of clicks.

A good day.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- very windy here all night; about an inch of rain yesterday but nothing severe.
Duke does not like the rain. Yesterday morning he just wouldn't go into the wet grass- he finally just peed on the porch. That was fine by me. I swept it off and let the rain clean my broom. Later we spent some time outside.

I divided some daylilies and naked ladies. They are in my wheelbarrow awaiting my friend who is coming to get some. She moved last fall and didn't take any flowers with her so she has a blank slate.  Not only are my flowers free but they are guaranteed to grow in our zone. Actually this friend makes scrubbies that we use to wash dishes. She never takes money for them. I usually put a donation in the senior center jar. But this will help her directly.

duke stayed out with me and walked all over. He was a little bummed because the place where he likes to walk is still muddy from having the well drilled. But with a little encouragement he came with me on the other side of the house. I think he'll go home today. I hope the wedding and dinner went well.

Today i'm going to make a list of projects for next week. Don't know how long this stay at home is going to last but I want to make the best of it. Even hubby isdoing projects in the house.
Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! We got your wind today, Cal and Lupe! All day long wind with gusts up to 55mph! It's frightening! Makes you wonder how trees and buildings can withstand this constant wind. Earlier this morning a styrofoam cooler went flying out the avenue! It must be out of town by now! I'm sure my older sis is worried because she lives on the side of that hill with all those trees above her property. We sat outside for a few minutes but couldn't take all that wind! Otherwise it's a nice sunny day, 76!

Cal, funny you mentioned Hya because I saw on Facebook today a coffee mug with her picture on it and several of her sayings! I'd post it if I knew how to do it on this iPad! I remember well that episode you watched! Lots of good videos from Dr Rogers today! Very nice robin pic! Glad you weren't hurt when the wind blew you into that bush!

Lupe, glad that you and Duke had a nice weekend together. Molly never liked to go out in the rain either. Boo could care less if it was raining or not! Lol! I planted my naked ladies yesterday. I hope they will bloom. That's so nice of you to share your plants! Most of my plants were given to me from my mom and sister. My grandma always said that you should never thank someone for a plant you were given because if you did the plant would die! Instead you thank them for their kindness! Ever hear that before? When my sis and I share plants with each other we always thank each for the bag the plants are in! Lol! I don't know if that is some Appalachian folk tale or  just something my grandma made up! Lol!

Jo, sounds like a bad night for you and Joan! Glad you had no damage! I did hear a couple rumbles of thunder last night and some rain but doesn't look like we got much rain. More of that is coming this week with much cooler temps.

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
More Ted and Words from Sharon - UPDATE March 29, 2020
29 March 2020
 Print Email
More Ted ~~ 3/28/2020 is a link to a 6 ? minute video captured by "Pooch" yesterday. Ted
Ted
I couldn?t tell what he was doing, but I think he was selectively eating fallen leaves. Sharon wrote that Ted and Tasha are being active and will start getting better fare tomorrow. She wrote:

Dear Bear Friends,

This is an anxious time for each of us, our family, friends and the world. We must be patient and turn to those around us and make the best of this time at home. It?s time to care for ourselves, our family, friends, and neighbors.

As you know travel bans have been imposed in many states; mine is one of them so my arrival in Ely has been delayed. I have a deep trust in our Bear Center employees and know that Ted, Lucky, Tasha & Holly will be taken care of until I can get to Ely. The responsibility and care of our bears falls on my shoulders, but we work as a team, so starting Monday, March 30th we will begin to feed Ted and Tasha and any other bears that are awake at 10 am CT. Tasha
Tasha
Tasha has been up walking around the Pond area since Friday evening. We will feed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, this will give the bear?s metabolism a chance to wake up. They will be in Walking Hibernation for the next couple of weeks. Read more about walking hibernation here: https://bear.org/5-stages-of-activity-and-hibernation/

Given the current situation and food availability, the diet that I've suggested will consist of sunflower seed for the first several feedings; this will sustain and satisfy them with the higher caloric value (about 2,580 calories per pound). It will also cause them to take their time in consuming. I?ll revert to feeding seed in the fall along with their usual diet.

In the meantime, we can all watch our LIVE cams as our bears wake from hibernation and become active. Please rest assured that our bears will be well-cared for during this imposed time at home.

Thank you and I hope you all remain healthy.
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- so good to hear from Sharon and to know that our bears will be cared for. I will be on line at 10 to watch for sure!!!! Of course, there was never a doubt in my mind.

We continue to have different birds migrating through here- rosy finches were seen yesterday along with the flicker. I'm still in good shape sunflower seed wise and will feed until it runs out. I need to move my feeder since it is in the way of the mower. We may have to mow at the end of the week or next week. Sunny today- so glad! For sure I will be outside.
cal- yes Duke went home yesterday. His Mom said the wedding and all went great- a bunch of friends lined the parking lot with their cars so that when the people (8 of them) left the church they walked between the cars and much honking of horns went on!!  Duke's Mom will be working from home until Mother's Day in May. She told me if I get lonely to call and she'll bring Duke over.   lol

rues- I will pass along your Appalachian folk lore on to my friend before she picks up the flowers. Seems to me that I have heard that before.

I was just watching Mom Decorah a bit ago and she was sound asleep . Then a mouse joined her- walked around a bit- I said- You'd best get out of there mouse! He left and Mom woke up- got up and rolled the eggs and went back to sleep. So funny.

On my list of to-do stuff is to do some walking on our road today- 30 minutes and if a can find my weights I should add a bit of that too- at least twice a week. It looks like the whole month of April will be social distancing here.

Make the most of the situation and have a great day jewelies!
