Coronavirus Covid-19 - UPDATE March 20, 2020
20 March 2020

A coronavirus problem hits home. The Black Bear Field Course for July 5-8, 2020, Red squirrel
Red squirrel
gained one a couple days ago and lost two today because all flights to and from Australia have been cancelled for 6 months. So there are now 5 in that course with openings for 3. The courses for July 22-15 and for July 19-22 each have 6 and could each hold 2 or 3 more. Click here for more info.

For people concerned about their pets, here is a blurb about pets and the new coronavirus Covid-19.

No minks or woodchucks today, just red squirrels?cute, though.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- it's 30 here and quiet; my 2 outside cats are sleeping in this morning.

Does the squirrel in the update look like a chunk or what? So cute? I check on Ted all day. So funny when he wakes up and can't quite get his eyes all the way open.  cal- do you remember when they start to feed him??

I happened to tune into the Decorah cam and was shocked to hear John Howe come on. He gave an educational talk on lots of stuff and gave the story with pictures of how the nest known as N2B  was started by humans and finished by eagles. I'd heard it all before but it was good to get a refresher. I think of all the new people to the cam and how interesting that presentation must have been to them. Yay for Raptor Resource and John Howe!!!

cal- your comment about the tv took me a little while to figure out. Why would you get so excited about someone throwing out a tv- television?  tv= turkey vulture   lol! We haven't seen any up here yet.

Hubby got his errands run yesterday- hardware store open and he got the thingies he needed. Also bought Kleenex for his bil and sil in the nursing home. Left them in the entryway- no visitors allowed.

Also got the news that the wedding scheduled for next Saturday will go on but with only 10 people there and no reception. How sad for the couple- the groom is duke's human brother. My sil and I will deliver our gifts this week sometime.

time for breakfast-- Have a great day jewelies!

First Gull of 2020, Ted Sleeping - UPDATE March 21, 2020
21 March 2020
 Print Email
The gull came so soon after I put bologna out for the mink (which we didn?t see today) First gull of 2020 03
First gull of 2020
that I think the gull was up on the tall white pine stump watching. At 3:38 PM, it was there gobbling them all up. Gulls can eat far more bologna than a mink. Who was the gull?

It flew up on the cub feeder for a couple ID pictures and saw a black dot on the right iris at the 6 O?clock position, Ted sleeping
Ted sleeping
so my best guess is that he is the male named 6 o?clock. He flew away when I went out with a piece of bologna, which fits his pattern. He isn?t that tame, but he knows the routine. He flew out and around and came back for it but I was too close, so he landed on the 40-foot white pine stump. I retreated and he flew out and around for a picture on his way to land, eat, and go.

Then it was to the Bear Center to check the exhibits. I wondered if the afternoon sun would be on Ted resting in his chalet, so I brought a camera. I walked up as quietly as I could and caught him sleeping with the sun on his straw-covered head. I wondered if he would recognize me if I didn?t speak. He heard the clicking, half looked, and tucked his head down to sleep. No effort to come to the fence. A pretty day with a very blue sky down to the horizon.

Good morning everyone- it is 29 here with rain due in this morning sometime. I loved the photo of Ten and I want to get that straw off too. I couldn't get into the cams  there this morning.
cal- maybe you should get twice what you usually get for Pearl. I think pet food should count as grocery for those of us with pets, don't you?

Yesterday was a bit cloudy but not much wind so I tackled another outside project. My asparagus patch has had a problem with grass and creeping Charlie in it. Lots of it. Well- I cleaned it up yesterday. It took all day because I  took lots of breaks. But it looks beautiful. I've never had it looking so good. Of course I am prepared to find more of that creeping stuff every time I go out. The ground was soft enough that weeds and grass pulled easily with the help of my dandelion puller.
I also emptied the bird feeder container of dirt. I'm disgusted by the racoon digging in there every night and I have to rearrange it every morning. I shoveled out the dirt and just added more bricks to keep the height of the feeder the same. I put that dirt out in our field as i.m sure there are lots of sunflower seeds still in there. Maybe the racoon found that stuff and rooted around there.

I'm getting in lots of reading too. So glad my friend gave me a bunch of books last fall. And I ordered 3 books from Amazon last week. I have enough to keep me entertained for a long time.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Friday we got up to 77! It was so nice out. Then overnight it all went back to winter. 27 overnight and 35 for the high. Today it's warming back up but not into the 70's. Everything is blooming now.

Cal, I could have sworn that they said Blacklist was on for 2 hours but it wasn't! I checked the newspaper's TV guide and it said one episode. :-\  Maybe I dreamed it! The one episode was a good one. As for our cable...it is still not right and has been sporadic since the last guy was here a week ago. It went out yesterday at 11 am and was still out when we went to bed at 11pm. We could get channels 30 up to 99. The lower channels all which are the major networks were out. Another cable lineman came on Thursday. He hooked something up to the cable line and sat in his truck  for 4 hours waiting for the cable to go off. Of course it didn't go off. He said he would check back with us on Monday. It worked great on both Thursday and Friday. Then Saturday happened and now again today. Thank goodness I have a little tv that is not connected to anything just air! I can get 3 local channels on it. So that's how I watch local news. Can't count on our cable company.  Our governor hasn't shut the state down yet. He caused some panic buying yesterday. He has been having tv updates every evening. On Friday he said he wouldn't have one on Saturday unless there was something big that he needed to tell us about. Saturday morning there was a statement out that he would be on the air at 7 pm.  Yikes everyone thought. He is closing everything down. Everyone run to Walmart! ( not me because I hadn't heard about his news conference) Last night he came on tv and says everything is going fine. Wash your hands, cover your cough, stay 6 ft away from people and stay calm! Talk about staying calm when he is the one who causes a panic. Our vet cancelled Wilson and Tela's appt tomorrow for their shots. They tentatively rescheduled it for Apr 6 and asked that only one of us bring them in. Trying to limit the amount of people in the ofc down as much possible. Crow cancelled his dr appt tomorrow. Said he is staying away from all those sick people. He did get his blood work done and his A1C was higher. I'm sure our doctor will be contacting him. Glad that Scout and Mrs Scout came home! We saw about 20 of them in the Country Club trees the other day. I can't figure out why they congregate there. Maybe they our fans of golf! Lol! What a great pic of the gull! Ted is a sweetie!

Ra, I was thinking that your grand was 19! Time goes fast. Is her boyfriend local? Accounting or banking sounds like a great career choice! My great nephew graduated 2 years ago with an accounting degree from WVU and is working now as an accountant for a company in Morgantown. His wife recently graduated and is now a 2nd grade teacher. They have their whole lives ahead of them! Robin and my younger sis were both vegetarians about 25 years ago! If I remember right they were for about 5 years.  They both said they felt so much better. But then they both gradually started eating a piece of bacon here and there. And then one day they went back to meat. I could almost be a vegetarian. I don't have to have meat. Maybe I'm a semi vegetarian, if there is such a thing.  Robin's friend Tasha is in a wedding in early May. The bride to be had a destination bridal shower planned at a Tennessee winery sometime next month. I bet it will be cancelled. Anyway whoever heard of a destination bridal shower? Wonder what all that costs? WVU and Ohio University have cancelled their graduations until this is all over. So many things are changing.

Lupe, I had to write a big check once and I know what you mean about trying to get it all in the space and making sure I spelled everything right! My bil went to our local library before they closed because of the virus. He found a new author that he likes so he checked out 4 of his books, each with over 2000 pages! My sis says he will never get out of his recliner now!

Hope Jp, Jo and Joan are doing well! Keep safe and well, Jewelies !

Hi Jewelies!  Yesterday it was sunny and hot here, but today... back to usual... rain and chilly.  I had the AC on yesterday, heat on today.  Geez...

cal... Our dinner turned out good... we didn't do the original plan, we had pizza from one of our restaurants in town...veggie for the new vegetarians.  Both grands were here with their boyfriends, daughter and me.  I really like both boys... polite, but easy to joke with and talk to.
Clemson grand took her boyfriend hiking for the afternoon to show him some mountains.  Being originally from NJ, he's hadn't seen many.  When you said the HVAC place was closing, that didn't make sense.  Seems like that would be an important business to stay open.  I would think a feed store would be an essential place, too.  There was just one Blacklist... I watched Dateline afterward!

lupine... Will the couple getting married Saturday have their reception at a later date?  My daughter and her hubby went to Costa Rica to get married and we had their reception later.  Worked out fine.  Sounds like you've been busy outside!  Have you got most of your projects done now?  Have you ever looked for books on ebay?  That's where I get the books that my library doesn't have.  Might be cheaper than amazon...

rues... They have officially canceled the prom here, graduation, too since it's held at the arena in Clemson.  My grand is glad she's a junior this year, so she's only missing the prom, but she's pretty disappointed.  Her boyfriend said they might have a small prom at his house instead.  Have to use that expensive dress somehow!!  lol  What a mess you're going through with your cable!!  Clemson grands boyfriend lives about 1-2 hours away from here.  They're from NJ and moved here just so he could get in-state tuition!  Not all families can do that!  Must have been really important for him to go to Clemson!  What a sweet kid... I'm so happy for my grand to have somebody like him... so much better than the last one!!  Of course, they're both disappointed not to be at school now, but they start their online classes tomorrow.  I think this week is spring break for the high school, so at least they have a little time before their classes start online.  My cats both need their rabies shot this month... I'll have to call them to see how they're going to handle our new way of life.

Hi to everyone!!

Ted, Another First, A Sign of Spring, and Snow - UPDATE March 22, 2020

Ted came out yesterday and once again showed us that eating balsam fir needles is a definite spring activity?at least for him. And he loves his tub. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u8PYiYaMRw Thank you, Pooch.

Holly made an appearance of sorts, looking out at the snow, and maybe thinking ?It was never like this in Arkansas.? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVUkoVCIIYM Thanks again, Pooch.

Deer with snow
Deer with snow
Yesterday, before the snow of today, this red squirrel glanced at a competitor wondering whether to run or go after it.

A first of the year was the appearance of this raccoon in the wee hours this morning.

With some snow still falling, three deer looked in the window, possibly saying, ?It?s officially spring, and we?re covered with snow!? They were granted a compassionate prescription of food.

A pair of American Goldfinches stopped by and showed how the male is trading his drab winter feathers for the bright yellow of summer that will include a black cap. His demure mate still has the browns and grays of winter.

The snow that fell today will melt over the next few days if the forecast of temperatures in the mid-forties (F) holds.
