Thanks for the article about those poor bears, Willi.  Thank goodness for the cameras!!

I don't like reading things like that either, but I do read them, ... in a way, to acknowledge those lives lost ... and bear witness to the fact that it happened... and the fact that it is evil, and it needs to be addressed.

Ambassador Bears and Wild Bears - UPDATE August 12, 2018

 Bear News from Sharon

Today?s Bear News or should I say today?s bear question.Bows cub female
Bows cub female

The current speculation about Tasha?s 2017 den is now obvious to us; Holly has indeed made herself at home in Tasha's old den. The question is will she use it? To add just a bit more interest, Holly has twice checked out Lucky's nice straw bed and the small bunker. So many unanswered questions?

Will Holly den in Tasha?s dug den? Will she return to the small bunker alone? Will she den with Lucky again? The suspense will build until she finally chooses.

The current hot weather is very hard on the bears. We try to keep them as cool as possible and that is why Ted stays in at times and Tasha is in the Haven. Ted posing on mound

Both of those dens have tree shade for the bears. The cabin canopy is open and very sunny as are the bunkers. Ted and Tasha often get showers from the interns; another way to help keep them cool. Tasha loves to play with the water from the hose.

When the bears are in the 2.5 acres they have the forest to rest in and the pond to swim in. The bear rotation times are scheduled so each bear has time to swim, forage and see people.

In the pictures this week I included, Morgan our intern, preparing dinner following the food chart I prepare for the bears. The interns follow the chart so they know exactly how much food the bears should receive for their dinner and breakfast. After the food is plated the interns record their meals in the food chart log. Hope you enjoy the other photos included in this week?s edition.Lucky on mound

I want to again thank our interns that are leaving, Emily, Kayla, and Norveig for a summer well done. I wish you all the very best in the coming year. Morgan preparing meals

We look forward to continuing to work with Morgan, Josh, and our new intern Jack.

In the wild, we were glad to see June?s long-time mate Big Harry appear, although walking with signs of age. He has to be in his 20?s.

Ursulas yearling
Ursulas yearling
12-year-old Bow put in an appearance with 2 cubs, both females. Also, her 3-year-old daughter Nancy appeared with 3 cubs that we didn?t see well enough to determine the sexes.

A yearling bear that we believe from its overall coloring to be one of 13-year-old Ursula?s, walked out of the bushes in light that showed its eyes and the beauty of its face. We?re hoping for a longer look to determine the sex and identity.

A call just came in that Shadow appeared. Moving out.

Another great group.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- jp- ty for the donut teddies and eli; as I was watching tennis yesterday the scores and news of other sports ran in a stream below and periodically i'd see the Marlins score; I wasn't really focusing on those scores then I saw a different score for the Marlins. What? Well, i'd gotten confused- reading marlins and the mariners as the same team. Took a while but I figured it out.
cal- laughing at jim barking at the puppies from the tub; so nice he added to the noise!!Tomorrow is the foot doctor- right? Ask lots of questions .I hope you get rain but no severe stuff. We have a slight chance too tomorrow and Wed. Ty for the Rafa news- I didn't see that but I sure understand that. Saving himself for the US Open. He is just amazing to watch. Sloane played really well yesterday but Simona was just too much. Simona had just beat Sloane in the French Open in June. Maybe the third time they play Sloane will win. It was a terrific match.
rues- just howling at the light story- robin is lucky to have you two even though you may get it wrong sometimes! Yes I did watch Dr. Jeff- tennis was in a rain delay at the time- kitty with the injured back reminded me of my tank. He has been spending more and more time in the house-just too hot out. Feel bad for the bears at NABC- too hot even for them way up north. I go out around now to do a little in the gardens. My pumpkin on a stck need watered about every day- leaves are wilty in the PM. Might get mums this week for containers.

neva- ty for your comment on the bear article- You are right- we do need to document the evil so we can deal with it.

I saw some little pheasants in our yard yesterday- when they saw duke they ran back into the field. Must have been 4 or 5-really cute. Ha en't seen our deer for a long time- corn is too tall-it really is amazing that the crops look so good around here with so little rain. Our neighbor brought us some sweet corn yesterday- yay- we'll have some for lunch. Yum.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!! It is pouring down the rain....again! This is the 3rd storm to hit here today. One crack of thunder earlier was so loud that it scared Wilson! He was on the back porch and man did he high tail it to the bedroom and under the bed! Dropped the temps down to 700.

Cal, hope the foot doc can help your toes! You have suffered so much with them. I remember when you had to go out and hose down everyone in the barn. That AC has really helped you out a lot! I agree Sharon writes good updates. Very nice bear pics today. Yay, you caught a mouse!  :) Jim barking at the barking dogs is so funny!  :D

Jp, thanks for Eli!

Lupe, I love sweet corn with lots of butter and salt! We haven't eaten as much this summer as we usually do because it started causing Crow to have gastric problems! If it's here, he will eat it and then regret it. So, I just don't buy it as often. :(  Cool that you saw some little pheasants! I've never seen one in person! Dr Jeff's shows are always so good. I thought the white dog that ate the tube sock was beautiful!

Eaglette, so good to see you! :)

Have a nice evening!

Yes...  Cal ...  I agree.  I know the involvement and the love that you feel for your animals, and all other animals as well.  We all care, and no one can ever doubt that you do.  I was not making this personal.  I guess I was just making the point that some of us feel compelled to personally read and know, and not for morbid reasons either.  Personally, I would not ask or suggest that anyone else needs to feel the same as me, or to do what I do, or think what I think.

You are also right, that when we do know and are so angry because of it, like you, we need to do something ... write a letter, make a phone call ... or some outlet that helps us to feel that we are making a difference in some way.  I do know that you do that.
I hope that I have not offended you.

Beginnings, Beauty, and Best Wishes - UPDATE August 13, 2018
 Print  Email
Another fun day with bears! Stars included Jack, Big Harry, Lily and others. Loons making a heart - D. Bradley
Loons making a heart
by D. Bradley
Along the way, Black Bear Field Study Course participants Denise Bradley and Linda Pottinger captured pictures that symbolized the beginnings of what brought so many together for bears, some of the beauty of the day, and two loons that collaborated to create a heart that some said expressed good wishes. See what you think.

Shadow - by D. Bradley
Shadow
by D. Bradley
Their picture of Shadow from last evening nicely showed her current state of gray. This matriarch represents the beginning of the clan that produced June, Lily, Hope, Faith, Jason, Eli, Ellie, Jewel, Fern, Herbie and so many other bears we have come to know.

Another beginning is the den where Lily gave birth to Hope?a den that has become a mecca of sorts that we visited today. The rocks in the picture were all thrown out from that shoreline den by the bear that made the den some year before Lily used it. Many people who visit it exclaim, ?I didn?t know it was so close to the shore.?Lilys and Hopes den from 2010 - L. Pottinger
Lilys and Hopes den from 2010
by L. Pottinger

Part of that beginning was a significant experience at the eagle nest tree that is still being visited by one of the pair. In the fall of 2009, Lily was bedded at the base of that tree. I needed help adjusting Lily?s radio collar. By that time, we had found the den where we believed Lily would spend the winter. I asked the landowner if he would help me. He and his wife were wary of bears and a little uncertain about a bear spending the winter on the property. He fed Lily some nuts while I worked on her collar. He got into it. I took my time on the collar. Lily won him over. He and his wife cooperated with the den cam idea in every possible way they could, including a phone line into their garage so we could send the video from Lily?s den cam to South Africa for broadcast to the internet. Lily made that beginning possible by being her usual self at the base of the eagle tree where an eagle was sitting today.

Beauty that they captured today also included a family of mallards on blue water and the vivid blue of a mallard?s speculum.

News from the Bear Center is that the mother garter snake measures 26 inches and two of her newborn babies measure 7 ? and 7 ? inches, which is nearly as big as the resident redbelly snake at 9 inches. Those are the only two kinds of snakes that live in the Ely area.

A note to people coming to the remaining WRI Black Bear Field Study Courses: After leaving the town of Soudan on Highway 169, don?t pay attention to the GPS on your cell phone. Don?t get re-routed off of 169 onto 6 mile road. Stay on 169, looking for mile marker 172. Go 0.3 mile farther and turn right (south) on Trygg Road. Go a little over 1.4 mile on Trygg to the first driveway on your left.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- thanks jp for sparkly teddy and adorable dawn; I am late this morning because our internet was off when I got up. It's been happening off and on all summer- never for more that an hour-don't know what the problem is- should stop by the phone office and ask. Mainly early morning.
hi cal- hope you are on your way to the foot doctor and hoping it goes okay and some relief is in sight. I checked the radar just now and no bad storms there yet. We are maybe going to get 1/4 of an inch in the next 24 hours. We'll take it! Duke's family had a good time- duke was not in a hurry to go home- he is such a sweetheart- at one point I was so involved watching tennis I didn't notice him going to the kitchen. He let out a little bark to let me know it was time to go outside. Hustled him out. I told his mom that story and she was afraid he went on the carpet by the door. NO no he waited on slow old me. Good boy!
rues- I also loved the white dog that ate the tube sock but What was he thinking? Glad his family is picking up after themselves and putting dirty laundry in hamper in closet with door shut.

Yay- eaglette is back!
Have a great day jewelies!
