Clynn, Thanks for the article, I know ospreys have been known to be in Tucson in the winter near the lakes and ponds... they definitely need water....  Mike has seen one near Gila Bend, then they were gone....   They are probably heading north this week. It's going to be in the high 80's low 90's in Tucson this week. It was warm when I was there two weeks ago. I'm glad I live in the Pines!  ;D... Interesting Stormy doesn't spend the night at NEFL. I wonder if he returns home or stays in the area. I haven't posted on my FB for five years or more. I've clicked like on favorite FB. Both girls use Instagram. My Pinterest is private with pics of the different raptor families, recipes, Caturday, etc..

Baz, thank you for acknowledging my great niece Olivia. She works very hard, as does her two brothers with sports and school. ... about college coaches. I don't like Kentucky, Louisville, because of Pitino's time with them and now he's at St. John... can't stand Pitino :(... We were cheering for Colorado St (sorry Lisa)... the rivalries and coaches personalities make March Madness special!

{{{Kb}}} hope things work out.  :)

{{{Phyl}}} I hope your dr appt goes well.

Good Morning Beakers!

Lani, nice picture of Mother and Father Goose! Always brings back memories of Fred and Wilma Goosestone and the drama that went on there. What was the name of that beautiful place? Eaglecrest? I rarely post on FB, I share posts about eagles or other wildlife. Wait, I do post Happy Birthdays, that's all.  Olivia is the one with the flower crown, right?

Phyl, I hope you have a good doctor appointment today! Fingers crossed and prayers for good news!

baz, hope you got your hongries fixed!

NEFL Eagle Haven - Gladen Gilera Lieb  · March 23 at 1:29 AM  · I think Bodie is a female and buddy is a male… based on their “beak size and shape”. My opinion anyways😁🦅🦅❤️

A March Motto

by Anonymous

Month of bluster, ice and sleet,
Silent wood and ugly street,
Winds that roar and flakes that fly,
Frozen earth and gloomy sky,—
Angry March, thy name to me
Like a battle-cry shall be!
"Forward, march!" but leave behind
Stubborn will and stupid mind.
"Forward, march!" and sing a song
As we stoutly march along.
"Forward, march!" away from sin;
"Forward, march!" the goal to win;
"Forward, march!" without a fear;
"Forward, march!" through all the year.

I do always follow your Nature 365 postings phyl.  Have to comment on today's.

Beautiful special plummage for the little kingfisher.  What I really have to praise is the fact that the nest in the mud wall (?) was discovered.  Patience is a virtue.

PHYL  You left us with a cliff hanger.  Hope the doc visit goes well. ???  Jim prepared dinner??  Oh Oh.  Pretty classy set of measuring cups  :o  Love all the color.  :D    365  ;D    Very interesting about the beginnings of the movie theater.  Life was simple then.

LANI   Wonder if it is the same goose pair each year at N1?

CLYNN   I do wonder what kind of a monarch season it will be this year.  Only 2 monarchs last year. Everyone had a terrible year.
Beautiful photo from Big Bear.

PUFF   If it weren't for our diligent, patient photographers we would not see beautiful kingfishers  They are so beautiful

Good morning it is now the fifth day of hatching at the north nest and so far nothing I wish there was a way for someone to message on top of the nest. What’s going on and what’s been saying like they do at Southwest Florida I have been watching and see nothing when they roll the egg except the same crack open place but no sign of any movement inside of there but wet feathers. I hope nothing is wrong but if. The egg Stonehedge I hope someone from RRP will go up and get them out and take them to a wildlife specialist for examination. This seems like the longest hatch I’ve witnessed..
Hope everyone has a good day and thanks for the bright, colorful greetings this morning BBL

Toucan TV update

Kala the Great Potoo! She arrived at Toucan Rescue Ranch in 2023 as a chick who had molted all her feathers off at the same time. Kala’s feathers have since come in perfectly and she is healthy although at this time she is not able to be rewilded. As you might have noticed, Kala does not move much. After many attempts of enticing Kala to fly and hunt for herself, our veterinarian team has found she is able to, but most likely would not fend well for herself in the wild. Luckily for Kala we have an incredible team to care for her so she can thrive and live a long life!

Good morning Beakers!

Clynn, Pretty morning pics......  yes, Olivia is the one with the Haku Lei (flower crown) on 1st place podium.... Mother and Father Goose have used this nest before... just like Wilma and Fred Goosestone at Eaglecrest. I often think of that cam, there were several regular chatters/mods who were posters on the forum. They left once Eaglecrest cam was stopped.... it was a beautiful place. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets... sweet pics of NEFL eaglet and buddy, interesting comparison.... Everytime I see a pic of the Big Bear siblings they are beak to beak LOL!!

Phyl, The beautiful bowls remind me of Fiesta Dishes... Gorgeous Kingfishers preparing their nest, perfect little home and area. I think of fairies when I see them... thank you for the history of Movie Theaters... Olivia (11yrs) with the Haku Lei (flower crown) is on the 1st place podium for Best All Around.

Tsk, I think it's the same goose pair using N1, they are usually territorial. I think I learned that from Eaglecrest Geese.

Karen, {{{Decorah North}}} prayers.

Good Morning Beakers

If anyone visited Decorah chat this morning, you probably know now that the hatching eaglet didn't make it.  Amy came to chat and said, she would make a post about it later.  :'(

Lani - Great pic of N1MG & FG.  The goose cam went live yesterday at N2B, so now we have two goose ladies on eggs.  N1 goose has 6 eggs, and N2B goose has 5 eggs.

karen - Good luck at dentist!  After your call, I went to chat and got the above info about the North nest.  Sad :(

tsk - Love your Bugs Bunny good morning, my favorite cartoon as a kid  :D

Phyl - Thanks for the 365, love Kingfishers.

clynn - Pretty morning flowers.  Good to see the BB kiddos looking good.

Puff, kb, tig, oldguy
- Morning  :)

I dod not see your post when I posted.  Dentist cancelled !
I hope they can get that  shell and eaglet  out of the nest.  Should be checked  for  bird flu.    Very prevalent in this area and biologist would be interesed if some how. Transferred once shell opened or   From parents.

RRP post this on FB just a few ago...

Raptor Resource Project

We are sad to announce that DN19 died in hatch. We saw the egg’s first external pip at 12:03 PM on March 20, but after four days of hatch in progress, all movement ceased. Hatch had been proceeding for about 103 hours at that point: longer than the longest documented hatch time that we could find, and much longer than the 24 to 48 hours post-pip that we usually see here.
As of this post, we don’t know why DN19 failed to hatch. As usual, DNF laid two eggs about three days apart. She and Mr. North incubated them through roller-coaster temperatures and some bad weather, but spring is unpredictable: if bald eagles couldn’t cope with weather variability, they wouldn’t be nesting here. The first external pip happened on schedule and things appeared to be proceeding normally…until they weren’t.
What about the second egg?
We finally got a good look at the blunt end of the second egg and confirmed that there was not, contrary to our Thursday announcement, a pip: good news, since it means that DN20 could still hatch. DN20 turns 39 days old today and we are watching for a pip.
We’ll be sticking to DN19 and DN20, even though DN19 failed to hatch. We’ll discuss future plans moving forward: nomenclature gets complicated, and I’d like to know what researchers have done in similar situations.
What will you do if both eggs fail to hatch?
If both eggs fail, we’ll try to retrieve them for necropsy and testing. We might not learn what happened, but there are causes – malpositioning, HPAI, environmental contaminants, injury – that we can confirm or rule out.
We would especially like the eggs tested for HPAI if neither egg hatches. Early on, it was believed that the disease was fatal to Bald Eagles regardless of age: if anyone had HPAI, everyone died. But it’s become clear that isn’t the case. If the outbreak is killing young at greater rates than adults, that could have serious implications for population health five to ten years from now.
Will the Norths reclutch if both eggs fail?
Right now, the North’s hormonal regime is driving incubation and brooding behavior. If egg two remains intact, they will probably incubate it for quite some time: long enough to interfere with any potential reclutching. But if it breaks or we retrieve the eggs, they might reclutch. We saw a reclutch at the North Nest in 2018 and reclutches have been documented elsewhere. Mr. North would need to bring DNF back into condition for reclutching to happen.
For you, the broken-hearted nest watcher, I quote Kaeli Swift: “Please, rather than shutting down those deep feelings you have for wildlife…lean into them. Teach your friends and neighbors and children to feel those deep feelings. Because it’s from that space that we can do best by wildlife…”. Thank you so much for taking this journey with us.
Hatch watch starts at our Fort St. Vrain nest on March 31st, and at our Trempealeau nest on April 9. If we have any new updates about the North nest, we’ll post them on our website and Facebook page.
