Having a  nice  cloudy, breezy day with temps in the 70s!   Pretty humid this am but the breeze is nice!

Lani I am happy to learn that Shannon has a friend with her   On this  leg of  her  move.   Very exciting time for Shannon . From what I hear, Las Vegas is the place for some younger people to move to as it is growing quite a bit and has a lot of opportunities for our jobs and living. Good luck to her.  Sounds like Mike’s birthday was great and wish you many more with or without cozy burgers.
Good pictures this morning from CLYNN and others.
I have a tree man or at least a man a tree man’s list to remove three blah blah leaves from the front yard and he said all of them in the back are healthy and disease-free and do not need to be removed. That’s good as the price is outrageous for the removal, do not know when this will happen, but sooner is better than later as the top of one of the trees is getting a little bit risky
Hope everyone is enjoying the day and that baZ you’re a little greatness is doing well at home . How long is your sister staying with them? Probably getting ready to go home.
Bakers enjoy the rest of your day and have yummy food for dinner.

PHYL   Love how Amy cleverly writes those blog narratives  LOL

LANI   Didn't realize TRR had a sloth adoption program.

Looking for a new Xmas tree this year - "for old people"  LOL  Our current one 7.5' - we've had  maybe 6 or 7 years is in 4 pieces and getting to be too much lugging up the basement stairs.  Also not prelit.   So we found a 6.5' tree prelit with colored lights and on a preseason sale!  Checked out another place on the way home and decided to go back tomorrow and buy it.  - Only in 3 pieces and each section can be tested ahead of putting it together.  Each light can be replaced individually if out and store will fix a section if ever to be found faulty.

Hellgate Osprey Cam update

Hi everyone,
Some of you have noticed that the "owl pole" where Finnegan and Iris liked to eat some of their fish disappeared yesterday!!  This was a shock and surprise to us - we had no idea this was coming.
The crossbars on those power poles have indeed been important in the lives of Iris, her mates and chicks.  She nested on the crossbars for at least 10 years.  This was dangerous, since those were high-voltage powerlines.  She is lucky that she was not electrocuted.
Since this was a dangerous nesting spot, in November 2007 NorthWestern Energy, along with generous help from Kate Davis (of Raptors of the Rockies) and Karen Wagner and her family, put up the current nest pole and platform.  Iris has been nesting in this much safer place since then.
But the Ospreys really liked to have their fish picnics on the higher, right-hand pole.  We have a second camera on the side of Missoula College that was specifically dedicated to filming this feeding perch.
So what happened?  The good news is that NorthWestern Energy has embarked on a project to remove some above-ground transmission lines and bury them.  This gets rid of some unsightly tangles of powerlines, but also makes the environment safer for raptors and other birds by removing dangerous electrical lines.
I have been talking with folks at NorthWestern Energy, and they are excited to install another tall pole (minus the power lines!) in the same spot.  We will be meeting at the site on Thursday, 14 November 2024 to discuss the pole and where to put it.  So the good news is that we should have a nice new feeding perch for next season.
Best, Erick Greene and the Montana Osprey Team

On a snowy November day in 2007, a crew from NorthWestern Energy attach the nesting platform to the top of a pole. You can see the large lag bolts that stick up through the platform. The ospreys weave their nest sticks around these. These help stabilize the nest, and keep the nest from blowing off in 100 mph winds like we had last summer!! Photo: Kate Davis

The NorthWestern Energy crew installs the Hellgate Osprey pole in November 2007. You can see that they put a few sticks on the platform as a housewarming present for Iris on her new nest!! Photo: Kate Davis

Happy Day, Beakers!

I was up at 4:45 AM this morning, and got my neighbor to her cataract procedure by 6 AM. I am not a morning person. LOL. No 4-legged escapees from her place with the coming and going. She treated me to breakfast out on our way home, which was nice of her. I was going to take her back this afternoon for her follow-up appt, but her son picked up her granddaughter from daycare and then took my neighbor to her afternoon eye doc appt, so that was good she could also get in a visit with her granddaughter. I talked to her a few minutes ago, and she said she got a great report at her follow-up appt, and she noticed she could already see lots better in that eye. She will get the other eye done in December.

My LGN and her parents all got home from Boston safely yesterday. LGN didn't have any fever when they left the hospital, and felt fine, but had an awful cough. She stayed home from school today, but will return to school tomorrow. My Lil Sis said she probably will drive home Saturday... maybe. She's staying at least till then because her daughter (LGN's mom) has a birthday Friday, and she and her husband are going for a Spa Day together for her birthday on Friday. She's turning 39. !! !! LOL. I'm not sure how that happens. Wasn't she just a lanky-legged teen yesterday?  ;)  :-* :-*

Lani, that's great news about Hellgate pole planning! But what a way to make the whole Hellgate Osprey Cam World, and Dr. Greene, go into shock and GASP! by doing that without a heads-up!  Shannon closed on her house! Does that mean she sold her house, or did she close on a new house? Congrats, and good wishes to her in her new chapter Vegas way! Glad Mike had a great birthday - dinner and game! Oh, it's fine for you to laugh at all that went down yesterday morning across The Asphalt Way! Really!! I was!! It was like being in the midst of a 3-ring circus. All I needed to complete the picture was to be sitting atop a unicycle, with a pole and a stack of teacups balanced on my upturned chin, while spinning rings around both of my outstretched arms.  ;D :o ;D

Clynn, oh that sounds like a possible better-than-expected outcome for one of the Sydney Sea Eaglets. Talons crossed!!  :-*

Lisa, hope you had a good travel day! Looked like some severe weather, or at least a buttload of rain, is possible in that whole south LA/south AL area today. I hope maybe you beat the front! Or at least most of it! Congrats on your niece getting her final approval and getting the lease signed! Careful with your back! And hand! Supervision duties only for you!! LOL. Take care, and have a safe trip and fun time catching up with family and friends.

I gotta run! Later Beakers! Waving to All Y'all!!  ;) :D

LANI   Just read that on FB  Glad you posted here.  A nice compromise to the pole issue.  A win win for both sides.

BAZI   A good outcome for your neighbor.   :)  Nice treat for breakfast  ;) ;)  Your niece has a marvelous husband who will do a spa day with her!!!  :o :o  Now I have this picture in my head of you on a unicycle  LOLOL

Puff, Cozy burgers are the size of a White Castle, and yes, Mike had 4. They arrive frozen for us....Mike's family has lived in Kansas since the civil war....  Here is a link to the history of the Cozy Inn burger. http://www.kansastravel.org/cozyinn.htm

Clynn, Shannon and her dog arrived safely in Vegas. They were in their new leased home by mid-afternoon. They emptied the U-Haul and the pod will arrive Friday... I'm so glad SE33is going to be okay, just a few more days of good food and rest... Thank you for the reminder  :-*

Tsk, Shannon and her dog arrived to Vegas by mid-afternoon.... Mike gave Shannon several of his miles for a plane ticket back to AZ for her friend.... we bought a pre-lit 7 foot tree, that comes in 3 sections that I can put together myself. You'll love it!

Karen, glad your trees in the back are healthy... Thanks for your comments about Shannon  :-*

Phyl, peaceful nature video, again, I would like to go clamming.... thank you for RRP update.

Baz, so glad there wasn't a 4-legged escapee this morning for you... happy to hear all went well for your neighbor... Spa Day for your niece and with her hubby is just what she needs.  ;D.. prayers for your LGN.... Shannon closed on her old home on Tuesday. She's leasing new home in Vegas...

Good night!

Thanks for the total Scoop on Cozy Burgers Lani.  Small enterprise that turned big, then went back/stayed back to small.  Tiny grill is the game changer?  Same slogan as White Castle ???  Can that be OK?

Makes me want to take a ride to KA.  BUT - Reminded me an IL/CO drive in my brothers yellow Buick - I have never ever again ever been in the beetle invasion they have.  Not even sure what kind of bug it was - but they coated everything.  The gas/potty stop was so disgustingly crunchy and slimy  Uggggggggh memory to this day.  Windshield impossible - and that was before auto window washing.   Used an ice scraper at many road stops.  Plus - it was summer hot Kansas dry, hot but we couldn't open the windows.

Obviously trip made a lasting memory.

Good Morning Beakers!

Lani, the Cozy Inn burger saga is much like the Cozy Dog Drive In in Springfield, IL!   https://drloihjournal.blogspot.com/2017/03/cozy-dog-drive-in-2935-south-6th-street.html    Glad to hear that Shannon and Kona (did I remember that right?) arrived safely!  A brand new start for her!  Mike had a good birthday, with cozy burgers, a win for the Jay Hawks...and his lovely wife with him!  Thanks for the news on the owl pole, I had a feeling that once the city found out how important the pole is to the ospreys that they would quickly get a replacement put in! Yay! Thanks for the history on Iris' nest in Hellgate Canyon!  Very interesting, that nest on the power line looks scary, glad its gone! Love all the pictures!

Puff, sometimes memories just pop into our heads...

baz, I am sure your Lil Sis doesn't mind a few more days with the family, I bet she has had a good time with Lil' Bro! Hope Lil' Punkin gets over that cough quickly! Where oh where does the time go? It's nearly 2025 and it seems like last week that we were all worried about the year 2000!

tsk, I traded our big hard-to-put-together tree for a slim tree in 3 pieces 3 or 4 years ago, I can put it together easily! Pre-lit and a program of color-changing that is beautiful! It cost a little more but well worth it!  How is Tim doing? I was also picturing baz on the unicycle!

Lisa, hoping you are having a great time!

Phyl, waiting for you this morning, we usually are posting around the same time!  It used to be tsk and I at the same time but I think she sleeps a little later these days!

Half of all U.S. states, 25 to be exact, carry Native American names. Today we will be taking a look at the 25 states and the meanings of their names. They will be listed in alphabetical order.
1. Alabama: Named after the Alabama, or Alibamu tribe, a Muskogean-speaking tribe. Sources are split between the meanings 'clearers of the thicket' or 'herb gatherers'.
2. Alaska: Named after the Aleut word "alaxsxaq", which means "the mainland"
3. Arizona: Named after the O'odham word "alĭ ṣonak", meaning "small spring"
4. Connecticut: Named after the Mohican word "quonehtacut", meaning "place of long tidal river"
5. Hawaii: Is an original word in the Hawaiian language meaning "homeland"
6. Illinois: Named after the Illinois word "illiniwek", meaning "men"
7. Iowa: Named after the Ioway tribe, whose name means "gray snow"
8. Kansas: Named after the Kansa tribe, whose name means "south wind people"
9. Kentucky: Origins are unclear, it may have been named after the Iroquoian word "Kentake", meaning "on the meadow"
10. Massachusetts: Named after the Algonquin word "Massadchu-es-et," meaning "great-hill-small-place,”
11. Michigan: From the Chippewa word "Michigama", meaning "large lake"
12. Minnesota: Named after the Dakota Indian word “Minisota” meaning “white water.”
13. Mississippi: Named after the river which was named by the Choctaw, meaning “Great water” or “Father of Waters.”
14. Missouri: Named after the Missouri tribe whose name means "those who have dugout canoes"

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. And if you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away. ~ Unknown

LANI  Enjoyed the link to Cozy burgers history.  We have White Castle about 10 min away  LOL  I've never been there but you can buy them at grocery stores.   So Shannon did find a place to live in Vegas.  Great.   What a great way to say thanks for Shannon's friend.  What a little sweetie kitty sleeping last night.

PUFF   That was SOME memory you had  - ride to KA.  I cringe with your description!

CLYNN   Beautiful sun catcher.  Tim is 98% back.  Still working on endurance but back to his daily routine.  Fascinating history of states names - 7 are "midwestern"

Good Morning Beakers

I feel like I need about 10 cups of coffee this morning.  I think all the driving, and running around so far has caught up with me.  I had a headache this morning and there is lots to do today.  The movers are coming before noon to move niece's stuff.

clynn - Pretty morning pics.  I am having a nice time, just lots to do here for niece.

Puff - Morning  :)

Lani - Glad to hear that Shannon and pup arrived safely in Vegas.  How nice of Mike to give his airline miles to her friend back to AZ.  Thanks for the Hellgate update.

baz - How nice of you to get up early and take your neighbor, and very nice of her to treat you to breakfast.  The drive was good from GA to AL, no rain.  Later last evening around 5pm, it started to sprinkle, but no major rain.

tsk - Thank you.  That sounds like a great find on the Christmas tree, especially the store fixing a section if ever found faulty.

karen - I did find it humid yesterday morning on my drive, but it turned out breezy in the afternoon.  I had a shrimp po-boy for lunch.  It was delicious.   :D

Phyl - Thanks, and thank you for 365 & blog post.

Will check back in later this evening.  Have a good day everyone.  :)

Here's two more state names to add to the list:

The name of the sixteenth state, Tennessee  has roots steeped in Cherokee history.  And " The name of the state of Tennessee comes from the Cherokee word Tanasi, which may mean "where the waters meet" or "gathering place". The Cherokee capital of Tanasi was located in what is now Vonore, Tennessee. The city was destroyed by the Tellico Dam in 1989, and a monument was erected to commemorate its former existence.

And my birth and childhood state, California.  The name "California" derives from a 16th Century romance novel.
How did the name of this mythical island become the name of the 31st state of the union? Spanish explorers during the 1500s were familiar with the story and applied the name to what is now called Baja, or lower California.

https://www.pbssocal.org/shows/departures/california-calafia-khalif-the-origin-of-the-name-california

I grew up simply knowing the word 'Californa'  was Spanish for 'land of the oven's heat'.    Of which it is so aptly named.

Beakers: Pest control guy came and went.

they are phorid flies...In 20 minutes I can let Ollie out of his kennel.

He said they've never had so many calls for this gnat like critter...an urban problem.

He also said: You don't even want to know what comes home with you from your grocery store/market.
I'm happy to have obliged and not further interrogated him about this!

Of course we tried everything organic first everything...the only slight improvement came from an ultraviolet lit sticky tape contraption off of amazon....but he treated any likely sources around the inside of my house.

I'm glad I'm not alone in this year's indoor pest problem here.
