TF Fledges!  :'( ;D :-*

Royal Albatross ~ TOP FLAT CHICK TF FLEDGES! Congratulations & Safe Travels! 🎉 💕 🎉 9.23.24

Sep 22, 2024  #TAIAROA #royalcam #albatross
Today was the big day for TF! He was seen off to the right down the track in the early morning flapping his wings in the breeze. Our cam op was able to zoom in on him in his favorite spot just below the hill. TF continued to flap his wings and headed down slope just out of view - all except for a few glimpses of his wings flapping that let us know he was still there.

Then TF was out of view and the cam op panned around and back to the area that TF was last seen in and within seconds we see a chick fledge. I do believe this was TF ♥ He was only seen for a couple of seconds and he then went down and out of view.  Timestamp 05:44 real time & 06:05 slomo. I included this is in regular time and with zoom and slomo to see it better.  Ranger Sharyn confirmed TF did fledge this morning, so this may have been the last view of him from the cam.

This occurred at 07:24:58 on Monday Sept 23rd 2024.

Congratulations to TF on fledging & safe travels! Mum LGL came in at noon so she just missed seeing her chick for the last time. A bittersweet moment for LGL who is staying for hours at the nest waiting for TF to return ♥

I am so proud of LGK & LGL for successfully raising their chick to fledge!  TF is 244 days old today! Bon Voyage TF - may you always be safe and have a fully tummy of squid! I hope you find TFT out there and share your fledging tales! I am going to miss TF very much Godspeed sweetheart!

And a big shout out to the Cornell team and to the entire DOC staff & rangers for all the work they have done this season! We were blessed to have been able to watch these amazing albatross and share in a small part of their lives! Thank you for watching!

Video captured & edited by Lady Hawk

Mom LGL has been waiting and looking for TF on their nest for more than 4 hours. She's not left the area. Searching for her boy.  :-*

Howdy Beakers.  :)

I took food, beverage, and supplies to my friends today, who are working hard getting their house packed up and stuff taken to the curb. They are exhausted. They aren't in a flood zone, but thank goodness they have flood insurance, along with their regular home insurance. Even so, all their insurance, and any help they may get from the disaster declaration, won't pay for all of the loss and repair. I went by way of ferry, and the drive down the part of the beach I took to the ferry showed almost every property had tall piles of stuff at the curb - furniture, drywall, insulation, appliances, and so forth. The same was true in the neighborhood where my friends live... who are not in a flood zone, but flooded anyway. I helped them relocate some household things to other locations, and helped carry some large bulky items to the curb, and some things to a shed, and helped with some other lighter tasks around the house, like laundry. I got to spend some time loving on their dog, who was a rescue, They adopted him after they moved away from me, so I hadn't seen him before. He is a senior dog who has been treated and cured now of some serious issues (heartworms being just one of those), and who also has a permanent significant health issue, and he is just the sweetest black lab ever. He is now part of their wonderful loving and caring home and getting the comfort, care, and love he never had before. Finally, in his old age. Even their vet said that he is a very lucky dog. When I met him, he acted like I was a good friend.  :) :-*  And that was even before I gave him a new toy (his all got flooded with yucky really nasty water, including sewer overflow stuff-ick), and some yummy healthy treats, which he loved.  ;D  He is comfortable, and seems like a good ol' lovable tailwagger, so I'm so glad he will be able to live out his remaining days with them. I left a little earlier to come home than I wanted to because I didn't want to risk taking the last ferry, in case it was too full for me to get on. So I came back on the 4 pm ferry. I hadn't been on that ferry in about 20 years. It was a beautiful day for that 35-minute crossing each way... lots of sea birds to watch, too!

Clynn, yes! - the storms are getting stronger and coming more often, making the weather disasters worse and more often. My friends' home, and neighborhood, isn't even in a flood zone. Those Aussies had a good idea for making those road lines more visible at night! My Goddaughter's daughter just moved to Perth this month, so I've noticed that Australia topics seem to keep popping up here and there... you know how that seems to work. LOL.

(((TSK))), I saw 4 Monarchs!! while I was crossing on the ferry back home today! They were all flying east, in the direction of that ferry ride.  ??? Maybe they were just taking advantage of the draft, but I told them if they were going to migrate to S.A., they needed to make a hard right!  ;) :D Oh gosh, I'm glad y'all were still at the hospital when Tim's a-fib was detected, so he got immediate treatment for that, thankfully! Even though it meant a delay getting discharged... I hope he's home very soon, and feeling better each and every day. Wishing you both rest, healing, and comfort.

Lani, thanks for the reports on the bears, sloths, and Albies!  :-* :-*  Oh, that's great that Mike is getting to work from home these recent weeks. Fingers crossed your internet is up more reliably, too. What is the status now of that fire that was getting closer to your area - I think maybe you said it was the West fire? Well, I probably don't remember the name of it, but I remember you reporting on it, and the picture and map you posted. I hope it is more contained, and that it can get tamped down soon! I was able to catch the last of the Chief's game tonight. Whew! Very close call ending!

Lisa, I wonder if there's a different dealer location not too far from you that might be able to handle that recall repair sooner. I know you'll be glad when it's taken care of.

Karen, oh LOL, Piper wanted to go walk with you - without letting you know... LOL... that little wascally wascal!  ;) :D  I'm glad she went right back to the house with you. So, Mickey is going to come visit over Christmas? Yay!

Phyl, nodding off while driving? Scary! Glad all was ok. Pizza sounds so good.

Tig, sounds like a nice day for a fun baseball game... and a BE! I didn't catch any golf today, but I did get to see some of today's (Day 3/Final day) Laver Cup action. The doubles match was insane... excellent!

BL, nice place to relax!

OG, I missed it if you said... but I hope the cards were good to you again this week, after you slayed last week!  :D

KB, glad Lollie is doing so well again, and your car repair was an easy fix!

Puff, glad you got some rain - sounds like it's really needed there!

Good night, ((Beakers)). Peace.

Good Morning Beakers!

Phyl, love your morning pictures, looks like rain coming your way!  It was actually chilly here yesterday after the Saturday night rain!  52 right now, high 71 today. Hope you have a good visit with your knee doctor!

Lani, TF has fledged!!!  Yahoo!  I think it is so sweet that the parents come back to the nest and wait several times, just to make sure their chick has fledged before they take off. It is kind of sad to us, but it is their way of life! Sweet little sloth for Costa Rica, and thanks for all the updates!

baz, I am so glad you are able to help your friends, and even to ride the ferry after 20 years!  What river does the ferry cross? They must be very special friends! I hope they are able to cope with the disaster they are in. You can bet the area they live in will be marked as a flood zone now, it's happening all over the southeast.  Insurance rates will go sky high.  Delicious Autumn! It would be fun to follow Autumn all around the world!

Lisa, I have never had the service department at a dealership act like they care. Well, I do like the Quick Lane at the Ford dealership, they are really nice and helpful. That's where I get my oil changed. They just do minor things. I have three incidents in my letter I am penning to Ford. All 'don't really care' and 'you are a female so don't question'. And slap on as many charges as possible. Better stop before I blow a gasket!!  Have Jeff call them, with his stern voice.

tsk, oh no, something else with Tim. My sister Becky, who was a cardiac rehab specialist said many people have a-fib and don't even know it. After Mom's back surgery she called Becky, turned out she had 'foot drop' and while the hospital was looking at that they discovered she had a-fib. Will he have to take the a-fib meds? Mom takes Eliquis, they have had to adjust it a few times. Praying for both of you...

GOOD MORNING

PUFF  We had a light rain almost all day yesterday - A true blessing.

LANI  Definitely the perfect symbol of Costa Rica - those cute little sloths  :D   Boy, they sure care for a lot of sloths at TRR  Truly amazing tho to see that they don't lose too many.  They are prone to a lot of medical issues as I read through.   Adios to TF  Safe flight!

BAZI   " I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns" - So true!   What an experience to see first hand all the destruction from the flooding.  You are a good soul! And even your friend the lab was not forgotten  :-*    Yes, those monarchs certainly had to make that hard right.  LOLOL

PHYL   Not too much dancing now after your second set of injections today  ;) ;)

CLYNN  Love that solo acorn on the log  :)    This is Tim's 3rd documentation of Afib - the first two were last year when he was hospitalized for them.  This one he did not feel and yes you are right - about 85% of folks don't know they have it.   Tim has been on Eliquis and Plavix for a long time...Both have been stopped during this time and only recently ( Saturday) resumed.  Makes me wonder if that might have contributed to this event.  Whenever he has to have any invasive procedure the Plavix is stopped for 5 days and Eliquis for 3 days.  Good that they found it in Mom.  Puts a lot of wear and tear on the heart muscle.  Did her foot drop resolve?

Fairly quiet day yesterday.  Tim's regular cardiiologist who has treated him forever was off last week and should return today.  Early yesterday the "sub" who has NO bedside manner came in the room, waved his arms at the IV and said " the meds aren't working we're going to shock your heart tomorrow so don't eat anything after midnight"  WHATT???   Tim said I want to see my own cardiologist.   Previously he has been converted with amioderone,( which they have not used)  but cardioversion is also a common method so we shall see today. Tim is a worrier so was upset all day.  Did get in 2 long walks and was up sitting most of the day.

tsk, oh my! I would also wait for my regular cardiologist too! My Mom went for a regular appointment in early April and her regular doctor was out of town. The substitute doctor decided she needed an endoscopy. Something about a valve in her heart?? I took her to that appointment when I was there in April. Well, it was a horrible experience for her! She wasn't having any problems so we do not know why the sub doctor thought there was. And she is not one to question a doctor. Turned out there were no problems at all. Your question about the foot drop, she now has neuropathy in her feet. I think because they became so concerned about the a-fib that they let the foot drop thing go on too long... just my thoughts.

Try to take care of yourself tsk....although from my perspective that's not really possible until your spouse is well...Try anyway!

Lani - I hate to admit it but I was sad to see LGL waiting for TF to return..I know I know...the dedication to chicks is why I love birds.

{{{Tsk & Tim}}}   🙏 s   On now! Something else w/ Tim.   :(    I'd wanna wait for my regular doc, too. However, the two long
walks and sitting up sound like some progress.   ;)   Agree... You're not much good to Tim if you don't be kind to yourself.

CLynn  awesome Mule Canyon Ruins, Utah    and   Sunrise on El Capitan, Yosemite National Park

Lani  congrats TF on fledging !  Sweet of parents double checking on TF's fledging.  Still kinda of sad to see LGL waiting for TF
Again, tks  for all the updates.

KB  congrats to you and Nellie  ;)  ;   Really enjoyed the trail cam of Mom Puma and cub Puma. Tksl

Well, I best get busy...LOL I went back to sleep after Jim left.  ::)

Now I'm thinking we should start a new set of groupies for an Eloquis fan club.   :-\

Another recent commonality.  I see a new cardiologist Oct 10.  My guy retired after being my guy for 20 years.  Good guy, good doctor - actually was head of cardio department at Good Samaritan.  He said he chose only the best for me.   :-*  I'll really miss  him - THE BEST!!!

{{{Hugs Tsk}}} I'd wait for Tim's regular cardiologist too! I'm watchful of Mike these days, and he would have reacted about the sub dr. the same way too. I pray Tim's cardiologist sees him today. Tim's making good progress...  Sounds like he is ready for his comfy chair and Lulu's nursing. 🙏  Take care.  :-*

{{{Baz}}} blessings and hugs for all you've done to help your friends and sweet lab. God, I love labs, they're such sweet ole pups... Royal Albatross

Ranger Sharyn Broni has already explained, albatrosses have an extremely good sense of smell. They can detect their food within a radius of 50 km.
I think the parents know that their offspring have fledged. They can no longer smell them. But they can smell the places where they were before.
Perhaps it has something to do with the "genetic program" that is now causing them to fly away and allowing hormone production to return to normal.
I wish all the departing albatrosses the best. Because the first returnees of the Toroa season have already been spotted.

Mom LGL waited more than 9 hours in TF chick's last nesting area. She did not leave until after sunset.   😢 :-*

Farewell TF chick - A special moment from a special season….  between Mom LGL letting Ranger Shari handle TF   :-*

Mom BOK skycalling for TFT chick - she waits for him at their nest for 5 hours or more and leaves after dark. 😢  :-*

New info from NHC on a developing TS in the southern Caribbean - this morning's forecast models have it with a potential Cat 4 at landfall - Biloxi to Tampa for cone with the center on the Big Bend area.  Heading thru Georgia, S. Car. and heading for the mountains in N. Car.  Hurricane status within 72 hours.  Landfall for Friday.  Keep in mind that 72 hours is a long time for forecasting hurricane cones - lots can change to move that cone, but this is the current path on this morning's forecast.

Karen and Baz - you know the routine  ;)  -  keep this on your radar...
