The male mantled the female as a sign he accepts her as his mate.

Captiva Island ospreys and their nests were devastated by Hurricane Ian in September, 2022.

Still no egg for us - but 2 other nearby osprey nests have eggs - so ..  soon.

January 13, 2024 CAPTIVA
Ruby was not seen yesterday or today.
Saw Jack once yesterday, neither one today.

5 pm  Jack showed up, stayed 15 minutes.

We see some beautiful displays of pelicans.

Dawn brought an AMAZING display of HUNDREDS of pelicans - flying, floating, fishing!
Dolphins follow them.

9 am  Jack flys by with a big fish.
He lands and takes off - with fish - a couple times.

11 am  Jack returns to nest - with the SAME FISH.   
He leaves again - with fish.

I imagine he is hoping Ruby will come.

Its rain and wind for DAYS!

No Ruby since Jan. 11 when intruders drove her away.

At last a sunny day!
Jack has been back n forth, once he brot a branch.

I hope he gets a mate - if Ruby doesnt return.

January 20, 2024 CAPTIVA
We are supposed to finally have a sunny day, after far too much rain.

Yesterday a female followed Jack back.
I am going to call her Jill - for now ....

Jack's behavior was like with Ruby - but its not Ruby - all agree with that.

Jill acted as if this nest is new to her, looking about.
She was very submissive to jack - and she appeared eager to mate.
Jack did mount Jill - but there was no mating.

They were interrupted by a 3rd osprey.
Jack chased him.  Jill left.
End of all that.  I hope / believe she'll return today.

These are my NON-EXPERT observations and opinions.
I believe Jack has a new mate.  I like their inter-actions.

Ruby was last seen January 11th.
It didnt seem to me she was happy with the nest.
She kept alarming and flying off every time the eagle vocalized.
The Captiva eagle nest is very close by.
There are at least 2 other osprey nests nearby - with eggs.

I got several snips.  Jack lands with fish, female landed with him.  After a few minutes another female arrives - Jack picks up his fish and flies, and the female he had physically bumped the intruder off nest!  Then chirped a victory song!

The small screen shot with Jack is from Jan. 26th.
His behavior was just like Ruby, his mate who vanished.
He brot a fish, mantled, she landed behind him, just like with Ruby - but another female caused both to leave.

NEW MATE?
January 28, 2024
Yesterday it looked - to me - as if the female I call Socks, mods call LO4, had made this HER nest.  She flew in and stood quite awhile.  She moved one of the larger sticks / branchs out, away from nest bowl.

Jack brot a HUGE load of soft nesting, pulled at it, then cupped.

Yesterday he DID NOT fly a fish round n round - giving frantic chase to several girls - as past days.

I think he has his mate.  We'll see.
