Happy Valentine's Day to Everybirdie

Beautiful sunrise, and rain to match this morning.

Nest work continues, sticks, corn stalks and husks, digging the egg cup.  I'm sure DNF is piling up the grasses at the edge of the cup so the cameras won't be able to see the first egg.  She's clever that way, but she may not have allowed for the new camera angles.  We'll see soon.

Is anyone else thinking what I am - why is DNF in that bole this entire night?  Kinda windy - I'd think she'd be in a better wind-deflecting safe spot.

Puff -- DNF usually spends at least one night on the nest before she lays an egg.  The last two years she's laid her first egg on February 16.

Oh, yeah Ginger multiple times for a while now we've been reminded about February 16 - I'm not that certain that she's been reading the posts.  I think 2 things - She was practicing her egg-laying mantra/trance and she nixed the idea of a rain washed delivery.

Practice session faked me out.

It's getting close, hopefully

Gotta be getting close to first egg.  MrN brought a trout to the nest where DNF was calling for food.  That's a good sign.  I think it's a brown trout, the ones with scattered speckles, some in color.  Deer grazing under the nest tree, and geese in the pasture by the creek.  MrN has been fish hunting from the Brush Pile Tree.

RRP posted DNF's past schedule.  (I don't think I've posted this before.)

2022: DNF laid her first egg at 3:17 PM
2021: DNF laid her first egg at 1:44 PM
2020: DNF laid her first egg at 3:36 PM
2019: DNF laid her first egg at 3:23 PM

So, her time of day has been quite consistent.  On whichever day it turns out to be, RRP suggests tuning in between about 1:30 and 4:00 for the best chance to see her laying egg #1, and also to watch for her to spend the early part of the day on and around her nest.

No eggs yet, here or at Decorah, but the mating business is going well.

Norths continue with nest preparation.

DNF tested the fit of the egg cup for a while around noon, then flew away.  She has lots of pale brown feathers, esp. on the right wing, looks like molting might be soon.

MrN brought another long stick about 12:30.  He has one primary wing feather that looks frayed and pale, see in the pic.

Geese feeding in the pasture about 1:00.
