Good catch of the female MPmom.  I am not sure I would have noticed her there.  Will watch for her in the future.  They seem to be squabbling regularly about stick placement when they are together.  Do you think she is trying to make the case for a new nest?

Hi Mp.  One of the other forums mentioned regular visits here from a kestrel and a scrub jay ( jay is new to me). This Cornell page has a photo of a female adult kestrel that looks like a likely candidate:

Sorry Mp.  Was thinking of yesterday's bird.  Missed that long beak on today's.  Will check on that one tonight and report back if I find anything out.  Must learn to pay attention.

This morning's visitor.  I think I have narrowed it down to one of these two.  The picture below is a capture from this site:  http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Gila_Woodpecker/id
I watched the bird on video for  it's entire 10 minute visit.  The lack of barring further up it's back confused me until I saw that the picture was blurred by moisture.  I saw the barring all the way up in bits and pieces as it moved.  It is there, just obscured.  The Gila Woodpecker on the left is most likely, as Channel islands are within it's  range.  Now I need an expert to mark my work.  I think I heard an eagle scree a little later.  Sure hope so.

Wrong again.  I am told it is a flicker.  I eliminated that one because I did not see the coloration.  I guess it would help to know what species frequent the area.  Will keep on trying.
