HI Jewelies!  Nice day today, not so hot.  Well, tomorrow or Friday, I finally get my rock work done!!  Yay!  Then I can finish up my mulching, and plant the plants I got for that area.  I got 5 Mexican heather plants, and one of them has already died.  Wants to be in the ground, not still in a pot!

cal... What a pitiful game today!  Doesn't sound like your Royals!  Saw on the news that Kasich quit, too.  Who would have thought Trump would do so well?   :)  It would be cool for you to see Ed's baby sheep and goats!  Well, it would be nice to see him, too, right?  lol   Hi to Polly!

JP... Hope you had a good day and got to eat out with your driver, too!  Did you get to go to Cracker Barrel?

obsver... I had to smile when you were talking about me cleaning out your stuff... you said you have a "few" things you can't get rid of.  A few??  Are you sure?  lol  We all have stuff we don't want to get rid of... you just have to be realistic about it.   I finally got rid of the "autograph dog" that all my classmates signed when we graduated from high school!  Who would want that thing anymore?  lol  I kept it in a drawer and didn't even look at it!

rues... What you been doing?

Hi to everyone!  Hope you are all well!

hi blschue!  Sorry to hear you're still not up to par!  Are you going to read all those books again?  That's the question I had to ask myself... I donated most of the books I had to my local library, but keep my favorites just in case I want to read them again.  My craft room has been decluttered, too.  The stuff I've had for years, waiting to be put together, or crocheted, or sewn... I figured I'd never really get to it, so got rid of the oldest stuff.  The fabric I didn't really like, or was old, or had too many pieces cut out of... I donated to a church.  I used to have boxes and boxes of yarn, but my hands hurt too much to really use any of it, so away it went, too.  Paint that wasn't any good any more, gone.  The rest of it, my grands use when they come, so it got to stay. I still have too much and go through it about once a year to see if I can get rid of more.  Just a few hints...  lol ...  Good luck!

Miracles do happen! Yesterday, we caught a small feral female cat in the live trap, and today we took her to the spay & neuter place to be spayed. The total cost was $65. She weighs 4.9 lbs. and is about 8 mo. We thought we would never get her tamed down enough to keep our appointment. We don't want her giving us years & years of kittens, and she will have an easier life. The weather is only fit for tea and good books--cool, rainy,  windy, etc. I wore my winter coat and was grateful I did.  We decided to join Cosco instead of Sam's Club. I think it's going to work out ok. Hi, cal, ra, rues, bischue, Jp, Dlong, neva, and all you other Jewelies!! I'm in my nice toasty bed and fading fast. Goodnight, all. Bischue, hope you feel better soon, and yes, ra, I do have a bunch of stuff to get rid of--takes will power!

Daily Updates
Jewel, Wildlife - UPDATE May 4, 2016
04 May 2016
Print Email
Jewel likely has three cubs. We only heard two voices at the den. A man who has been coming to the community since 1956 and is now a resident was delighted Purple finch mid-flight
Purple finch mid-flight
to video and watch a mother with 3 cubs near his house. He will try to get us the video and pictures. It?s from April 24. He lives about a half mile from her den. I hope we can see the family and photograph the cubs for the catalog of bears in the clan. We want to learn their sexes and add them to Shadow?s family tree.

Out the window, redpolls are gone, replaced by purple finches.

Purple finch

When I arrived this morning, instead of a pair of mallards, it was a lone male outside the window, making me think she was still keeping the eggs warm in their nest. By evening, with the temperature over 60?F, she was back (photo below), and they were together again.

Lily?s 3-year-old son Eli was seen a couple times today. One of those times was here just after dawn when he checked an empty feeder and went on. Toward evening, I followed up on a call from a resident and wanted to get a picture of him in daylight, but he bolted. The resident is one who calls us to bring the Herring gull
Herring gull
Black Bear Field Courses over whenever there is action. A lot of wildlife uses his property, including deer (photo below).

A fox cruised through outside the window, bringing my attention to the new leaves lit by the setting sun on the forest floor. They are mostly Wild Lily of the Valley (Maianthemum canadense), which is not a bear food. Barely starting to emerge are Big Leaf Aster leaves (Aster macrophyllus), which are a bear food. They will soon carpet the forest floor. Bear food will be everywhere for a week or two until the leaves start to mature and become unpalatable.

The day ended with the tame gull tapping at the window by my desk, telling me to get up and bring her(?) some bologna, which I did. She prefers bologna over hot dogs. I say ?her? because she is smaller than the non-tame gull. If American herring gulls are like the European herring gull, females are smaller than males. The larger non-tame herring gull chases her if he is around when I feed her.

The big object on my desk is a speaker connected to an outside microphone that is far more sensitive than the human ear. When it seems quiet outside, the microphone picks up wolf howls, eagles, ravens, owls, frogs, and the twitter of birds. Just now, I heard the loud splash of a beaver amidst the din of spring peepers.

Thank you for all you do.

A nice picture of Eli.

The Miami excursion went all right except for heavy rain the whole trip.  We did get to eat at the Cracker Barrel. I had French Toast.  Very good.  Raymond is a smooth driver and steady.  He said he would be happy to drive me next time.  Onlu mild discomfort from the shot and I went to bed early last night.  I checked the scores this morning and see the Marlins won,  That's 9 wins in their last 10 games.  Way to Go!

Hope all of you enjoy this Thursday that we are presented with.  I wish all a dry, comfortable day.

Hi JP! Hope you got back okay and your eyes are okay this morning. you have to tell us about your ride with raymond and did you eat at the crackle barrel? I saw your marlins won yesterday 4-3! Yay for them!

Hi Blschue! i am sorry you don't feel well too. hope nothing serious. i got a library and like 7 bookcases i think and all them filled. now i got my books on my kindles but i like reading a regular book too. i keep all mine cause i have reread almost all of them. not lately i haven't but if i had the time i would. Mom davis made quilts all the time. she used to make clothes for all of us. her sewing room was tons of scraps piled up high in the middle her sewing machine. her quilt stuff. she loved that room.

Hi Ra! You make so much sense on getting rid of stuff. know i should. but everytime i throw stuff out later on i needed that. hard to get rid of my moms stuff and my dads and my granny's and susies. still a whole trailer of her stuff left too get. jim is bringing me her bed next time he goes there. going to put it in sister rooms downstairs. it is a queen downstairs a full and her bed has a brand new mattress on it. she never used it cause so much stuff on top of the bed. jim brought home 8 big trash bags full of her stuff just on the bed and i already had brought some home. i still have not gone thru one sack yet. they are downstairs.

Hi Obsver! i hope you like cosco better nice to have a change and i got a barn cat now again i too try to catch them in a live trap and get them fixed. don't want a tons of kittens out there. you got her fixed cheap. pete charges 200.00 a dog even a small dog and 150.00 on just a cat. last one ed did down in richmond it was 75.00.

Obsver -- good going on the cat!!

Blschue -- hope you feel better SOON.

RA -- during the year between decluttering do you bring more in there?  ;)

That looks like a silver fox, neat!

Glad the Miami trip went well JP and you have a good driver next time.

Wow Cal that's expensive on dogs/cats at Pete's!  Oh way, that's spaying, that IS expensive.  I had checked with Chester's vet on price for getting him neutered and any dog over 45 pounds is about $160 and he's about 73 pounds now.  Maybe go through a bag at a time, like do one and come back later and tackle another one, they'll get down over time.  Oh my that dog shame!!!!  :D

60 right now and sunny, headed for 65.  Got a mile in again this morning with "the kid".  Off to see what a bear squeaker is, thanks for all the puzzles!

Hi Jewelies! I'm so happy that it is raining today! Lol! Since Crow is having his surgery in a couple weeks, we have been working our butts off trying to get a whole summer's worth  of work done in a short amount of time! Today is normally mow day but thankfully the rain came! I need to run the sweeper and dust but that won't take long. I sent Crow to Coyote shooting George's! Lol! He hasn't visited George in a month! :o

Cal, all those pics from the bear update are so good! Yeah, I'd like to see Jewel, too! Bernie and Trump are both having rallies in Charleston, our capitol, today! They say traffic is a nightmare! I have a bunch of puzzles to do! Funny dog shame!

Jp, glad your new driver worked out for you! I've never had French toast  at Cracker Barrel. Bet they were delicious! Did they have strawberries and whipped cream on top? Nice pic of Eli!

Obsver, that's a good price for spaying. Is it cheaper because she's feral? She's about the same age and weight as our little Tela. Did you name her? Wish we had a Cosco near by! We stopped at Sam's this morning.

Ra, we finally started mulching! Put down 20 bags outback and 15 bags at Robin's. Transplanted 3 azalea's from out front to out back because they grew more than what they were supposed to grow. Now need 10 bags for out front. Half the backyard isn't getting mulched this year because I waited too long and everything is overgrown! I watched Blindspot and I can't figure out who she used to work for! Congrats to the cheerleader grand! When Robin cheered tryouts were always in the spring. Now they aren't until August. I don't know how they go to cheer camp in the summer if they don't have the tryouts before then. :-\

Blschue, hope you feel better soon and the sun continues to shine!

Nora, you are warmer there than it is here! Our high today is 54! Snow flurries in the mountain counties! :o

Hi Nora! pete is expensive. when i was talking to missy monday this lady came in for some flea and tick medicine and said her dog got fixed and missy said your dog is now fixed? she said yes she took her to that cheaper vet in richmond she said it cost her 75 instead of petes 200.00 who can blame her. i think pete is the better vet so that is what i would go on. ed the best but retired. needra took a feral cat there told them she was feral and was mad still charged her 150.00. the humane shelter in richmond adoption is 150.00 for a dog and 100.00 for a cat and that is a bargain. they are fixed and all the shots. you don't have to take them and get that stuff done already done. if i ever need a dog on down the road i am going there get me a little dog.

Hi Rues! Good mr crow went and coyote shooting george! if they ride the four wheelers today they will be in the mud! you need some time to yourself and get your house done. i know how that is. I bet traffic is mess today for the trump and bernie stuff. that john kasick finally dropped out too. just trump now but rep trying to decide if that is okay..say what the people said it was okay they voted for him...man alive. lincoln said and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. i know jp french toast sounded pretty good i would put some jelly on mine. no butter just jelly. oh chilly there hope mr crow wore his heavy coat and his hat and gloves. did you ever watch star wars 4 yet a  new hope. yesterday was star wars day..may the 4th be with you!! :D
