Good morning Jewelies! Didn't have any trouble reading the posts just had trouble trying to post! Hope this works!

Cal, wow 80 today sounds wonderful! Wish I could say that for here! The wind is still blowing today but nothing like yesterday! We had gusts up to 45 mph! My sis that lives at the bottom of a steep hill was worried that the trees above her would come crashing down on her house! Luckily that never happened!  It was cold last night but everything looks ok this morning. Have another cold one tonight. I remember that Hyacinth and the commodore! She made Richard park illegally and the car ended up with boot lock on it's wheel!  :D  Jim coming home today? Bet Augie will eat him up! Lol!

Jp, awesome pic of the Blue Angels! My cousins in Pittsburgh, PA, used to go see them every time they had a show in the area. I've never seen them. For some reason they don't have shows around here. Love those beautiful palm trees! Good pic of Oliana! Glad your weather is back to normal!

We have more things to do outside but it's only 44! It has to warm up some more before I venture out! Bbl!

What wonderful eyes on Olianda!  Thanks JP.

Ouch on your phone blschue.  :(  Have a safe trip when you come back and hope you feel better!

We were in the 70's today, it was warm even though windy!  Sally & I went to pick up her Mark from Mayo today and we swung in Pet Smart on the way home and I got the scissors.  Can't believe I did that, especially when it's an hour from home and we seldom go up here.  I should be all set now.  Chester met their Chihuahua, Daisy, earlier this evening and did fantastic!  He seems scared of big dogs if they bark at him.

Cal sorry about Scootie's seizure, I know what it's like.  Hope the ears are ok.

I'd love to see the Blue Angels someday.

Have a good night all..........

Baseball  season is underway.  I see where the Royals beat the Mets, that's good.  Marlins do not start until tomorrow.

Daily Updates
Ted, Raven, Website, and Research - UPDATE April 3, 2016
03 April 2016

I had no idea that ravens would come this close to a bear.  A Lily Fan captured this video of a raven behaving Dark eyed junco
Dark-eyed junco
comfortably only 2-3 feet from Ted?s head as they faced each other.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW73kP6CBHk&feature=youtu.be.

I thought of Bernd Heinrich?s book Mind of the Raven and his words ?In the High Arctic, ravens follow polar bears and feed at their kills, and in Yellowstone Park they also feed not only near coyotes and wolves but also sometimes with brown bear. Doug Peacock in Grizzly Years described watching a large grizzly sow and her cub...with ravens all around.  At times, she reared and swatted at the cloud of ravens, flailing away at the air with her paws.  The ravens probably also wanted what the bear was searching for, most likely pocket gophers or their seed caches.?

Lily and her yearlings
Lily and her yearlings - March 21, 2016
I emailed Bernd at the University of Vermont: ?Bernd, I thought of your book and ravens and wolves when I saw our captive bear interacting so close with this raven.  In Ely, ravens get used to people, but nothing like this.  They were only 2-3 feet apart at times.  I suspect the raven has been coming to Ted?s pen awhile and became habituated to him, but they don?t habituate to that extent with the people of Ely, even those that feed ravens.  If bears are scavengers that open carcasses for ravens, maybe ravens are prone to habituate to bears more easily than they do to people.  Do they get that close to wolves?  Lynn?

Eric the webmaster has been working long hours the last couple days and has bearstudy.org upgraded.  I?m sure there are glitches to fix yet, but this is a major upgrade with new advantages.  The update tonight will go out to the subscriber list that has been having major trouble, so we?ll see how that goes.

Lily and her yearling - March 21, 2016
In going through old papers, I came across this 9-page document I wrote to Commissioner Landwehr back in December 2011.  It?s full of information about what we do, how the study bears respond, how reviewers ranked the safety of what we do in 1990 and 2008, and how bears respond to Black Bear Field Study groups http://www.bearstudy.org/website/images/ stories/images/Updates_2016/ Response_to_Proposed_2012_Permit_Conditions.pdf.

Speaking of the Field Courses, with the good words I?ve been hearing from key legislators, I?m looking forward to some of the best Field Courses we?ve had.  Thirteen slots are left in four courses at http://www.bearstudy.org/website/field-study-courses.html.  If those 4 courses fill up, or nearly so, we?ll open another to run from July 31-August 3.

Thinking of Lily, we looked at the trail cam pictures and found that since the card in the trail cam was changed on January 4, no bear had come out until March 15 despite the warm El Nino winter. They were out for a few minutes on March 15 and 16 but it was too foggy to see well.  The next emergence was for 22 minutes on the 21st when they ate snow near the entrance and Lily gathered some pine boughs for bedding (photos).

They were also out for 25 minutes on the 22nd.  The 23rd was the day we were there.  Lily was resting ? of the way out of the den but retreated inside 8 minutes before we arrived.  That?s about the time we re-grouped a tenth of a mile away before pushing on to the den.  She may have heard us talking.  I remember watching a mother near her den about this same time of year many years ago and noting that she heard a vehicle coming 4 minutes before it passed, and I didn?t hear it until 2 minutes before it passed.

Out the window, dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis) are coming through. We?re near the southern edge of their range.  Old-timers called them slate-colored juncos.  Another name is snow birds because they come through in fall about when the snow starts.  In spring, it?s when the snow is about to melt.  Once this cool spell (20?s F today) passes, we?ll have high temperatures in the 40?s to 60?s and the little bit of snow we have will disappear fast.  We?ll be watching for early bears.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies!  Another nice day here, but going to cool off this week.  I've been painting and have 3 sides of the foundation done... I ran out of paint.  All I have to do now is the back side and the porches.  I really like this new color... probably because it's called "milk chocolate"!  lol  I had to mow yesterday... and now, it starts...  Seems like the mowing season just ended!  lol  The fire ants are bad this year... hills everywhere!

rues... I didn't answer your question from Saturday... The stuff I bought at the yard sale was from my daughter... it was just us there, no other families.  There was supposed to be more sellers, but they didn't show up.

JP... Thanks for the Shadow clan chart!  I saved it, sure were a lot of cubs last year!  I wonder how many were born this year...  Cool pic of the Blue Angels yesterday!  What a beautiful blue sky!

cal... I bet you're going to miss the game tonight!  Sure does start late!  Is Scootie ok today?  Laughed at Lily and her 3 big cubs...  Must have been a crowded den this winter!

blschue... Thanks for checking in!  Hope you're feeling better.  Have a safe trip home.

Hi Nora and Deb and everyone else, too!

Hi Ra! the nc vs villanova is on 8:19. what a time not 8:20 or 8:18 nope 8:19. i can probably stay awake for the first part but i knows i will go asleep. royals tomorrow at 3:15 in the afternoon. i can see part of that going in and out. jp's marlins tomorrow night around 6 pm. scootie had a good day today. he went on to bed. jim went to check out what all missy needs. she wanted a new ac but only has so much money. jim said oh hell her furnace is shot too. he said we would carry her let her pay so much a month so i am happy she will be able to get what all she needs cause her ac and furnace is really really old. i don't know if it is jp old but pretty old. maybe older than jp really her grandpas place and he built it wayyyyyyyyyy back when.. Those blue angels when they came to kc they would practice right over boobies house. once i was talking to her and could not hear nothing but roaring. i have been down to her house and we sat outside on her front porch and watched them. the airport was a crows eye from her place. i know the lily go round! i got tons of mole hills. or voles hills and tons of dandelions and when i mowed if a honey bee was on one i had to swerve around. and lots of bees which is a good thing but my mowing was looking weird so i went back over it and if a bee was gone i mowed that. had a big area to do so took awhile. tomorrow i will mow over there and work on that. jim busy doesn't have time to mow all this.  wow your foundation i know is looking good and your porches!! Augie in here with me he was snoring really loud like they do and then all the sudden he stopped. i yelled augie!!! at first he did not move and i thought omg AUGIE!! He was like WHAT!! You got food? whew......
