The dogs/freeway -- I was working in the yard, so had the running loose.  In the one round I made mowing they had gone from lying there watching me, around the barn, and across the pasture.  I couldn't believe it.  Apparently they found a spot to get under the fence and they were in the ditch between that and the freeway.  I knew I couldn't heft them over the fence (about 80 lb. lab mixes) so grabbed the keys and made a VERY quick trip the two miles to town and got the freeway and headed up.  They were still checking out the ditch, whew.  Ran around the truck and opened the passenger door and the one came to me (at this point she had gone up and was standing on the white line dividing the lane from the shoulder watching cars zip by.  Walked up and grabbed her collar and just then the lab/redbone that was built like a little bulldozer and usually overshot where she was going to stop when running came flying up out of the ditch and I lunged and caught her collar as she went by.  There was a car in that lane and no one in the other lane and they didn't move over an inch or slow down.  Thank heavens I didn't fall when I got hold of her, we'd both have been hit.  Shudder.  Scared the heck out of me and I thought I was panicked when I was in the yard and saw them out there.

Hi Jewelies!  :)

The weather is cooler but still not bad. Highs in the 50s and upper 40s for the next 2 weeks according to the forecast. Next week we will have upper 50s and even a 60 thrown in there. The nights will be in the 30s and very little chance of rain. I can live with that!  :)

I was feeling pretty good yesterday so I went to an open house/birthday party for the German Shepherd Rescue that I've been volunteering for. My daughter and SIL took me. The dogs didn't get to go, but there were lots of good snacks and we met people we have been talking to on the phone and emailing. It was a fun day. When we went back to their house their herd was running all over everywhere. I have to go inside and get seated as quickly as I can because they will knock me on my *** if I'm not careful! Here's pics of them from yesterday:

Zoe (Black Lab) and Violet. They are my daughter's original dogs.

Mac with his toys. He was a foster dog and they adopted him.

Bella. She is their foster dog. She wouldn't sit still for a picture but this is a pic where she is all dolled up to go to an event. She is still pretty wild. And HUGE!

I know some of you watch The Good Wife. Did you know there are only about 6 more shows and then the series is over? I was sure sorry to hear that; I love that show! I really like the new show with Jennifer Lopez, Shades of Blue. Maybe I'm crazy but I think she's really a pretty good actress. And I have always liked Drea DeMatteo who plays the other woman detective.

Cal you mentioned that big fire they had out by the bridge going to Leavenworth. Well, the weather people could see it on their radar. I didn't know that could happen! Here it is. The green that looks like clouds is smoke!

These are a couple of pics of the Atlanta Panda girls. I don't know who is in the first one, but the second one is Mei Huan.

Here's Holly and Lucky in their den last Friday.

Honey's house. It's too dark inside to see her but if I were her I'd be inside snuggled in the straw too.

Ted's house.

Bei Bei has been learing how to climb outside; actually he climbs on everything! Here's a little video of him climbing trees, the bars in his den and his mom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xYNImUQdR0

These are just a couple of sweet pictures of Bei Bei & Mei.

Hi to Cal, JP, Rues, Ra, Obsver, Deb, Willi, Blschue, Nora, Neva, Chippy, Pat. I've been reading all of your posts every day. I've got a bunch of applications for people who want to adopt a German Shepherd to process so I better get going or I will never get them done. I hope you are all having a great day!  :)

Cal, I love the puzzle! I know those people! Lol! Downton was very good last night. There's a big surprise at the end! It was on for an hour and half. Next week is a special about the Manners of Downton then the finale is is on March 6!  Sorry you have some cavities! I didn't think you were drinking much pop! Good tip about rinsing out your mouth with water afterwards! Robin is trying to cut back on her pop. She thinks it bloats her belly! Great news...the body shop started working on the car today! Still can't find the missing key.

Jp, not another rainy Monday! Nice pic of Jewel and her cubs! Hope the sun shines tomorrow!

Dlong, love all your pics! All your grand dogs are beautiful! Sounds like you had a nice time at the Rescue party! I stopped watching the Good Wife a couple years ago. I got hooked on PBS programming that was on the same time. My sis is mad about this being Good Wife's last season! I watched part of the first episode of Shades of Blue and just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll check it out online. Give it another try. I think Ra likes it.

Nora, wow, now that was scary! Bet your heart was pounding! Glad all turned out well!

Hi Willi!

Lily, last summer.

Rumor has it that we are going to have a rain-free day today.

Wishes for all of you to have a successful day in all respects.

Play, Foot Pads, and Break-up - UPDATE February 22, 2016

Lily sniffs the air while Faith follows - May 6, 2012
Lily and Faith days before break-up - May 6, 2012
In this 7 ? -minute video captured by a Lily Fan about 10:45 AM today, Holly decides it is time for Lucky to wake up and play. He does, almost defensively, but later looks worn out until he gets a second wind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BixnQwGuxQE&feature=youtu.be

I saw questions about black bears shedding foot pads and wanted to include this reference which was my first peer-reviewed paper: Rogers, L. L. 1974. Shedding of foot pads by black bears during denning. Journal of Mammalogy 55(3):672-674.  Why do they shed them? I can only guess. What I think is that they thicken but remain pliable through the active period but become stiff over winter. In mid-winter, they begin removing them with their teeth, and they complete the job by emergence in spring when the new foot pads are tender. I?m wondering if older bears that are less flexible, like Ted and Honey, have trouble reaching their foot pads with their teeth, especially the rear pads, which could explain why they don?t walk as agilely as usual.

I also saw questions about family break-up and saw the nicest compilation of information about it I?ve ever seen. Betty Beauchamp put it together from the updates and added pictures?a big job that she did for Lily Fans. She did similar treatments of many subjects of interest. Thank you, Betty.

And a thank you to all Lily Fans for all you do that carry us beyond what otherwise would be possible.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DLONG!!!!!!!!!!!  Hope you are feeling good and have a wonderful day. Your work with the dogs is so important. Has anyone read any of the puzzle lady mysteries by Parnell Hall? There are 16, and the library has 9--just finished the 1st one. Cal, when I heard about those eagles, my stomach felt like I was on an elevator going down too fast. What a loss. Hope they get the answer fast! Rues, I'm going to have to pass on to you some nasty weather, because I sure don't want it!  Warm Mon., found a tick on one of the outside cats, but supposed to have 3-4 in. of snow by Thurs. Keep your snow shovel out! Cal & nora like to share their weather with me. lol  Ra, did you have any trouble adjusting to the weather when you moved down there? Do you think the summers are any hotter than we have up here? Jp, always look forward to seeing your post first thing in the morning. Sorry the Good Wife is almost done. I've always thought it's one of the best. Hi, bischue, Willi, deb, chippy, Eaglette!!!!!!
