Lucky to have a picture of Lucky today.

I wish for each one of you to have a pleasant Sunday.  I am going to as it is supposed to get into the mid 70s today.

Lily, Hope, and a Picture - UPDATE January 30, 2016

Lily emerging from den - 3/24/10
Lily emerging from den - 3/24/10
Going through pictures for the Upper Wall, this picture of Lily coming out of her den on March 24, 2010, was a good memory, and this picture of Hope from April 17, 2010, is not sharp enough for the Upper Wall but is so cute, I wanted to share it. I?d like to visit Lily?s den from a distance like I did Jewel?s den and change the cards in their trail cams. I also want to put trail cams at Jewel?s den to record their emergence in spring and any bathroom breaks in winter.

Among the good things happening beyond the big one?the extreme makeover at the Bear Center?are:

Hope - 4/17/10
Hope - 4/17/10
1. I think the presentation Sue and I are putting together for the International Bear Conference will be terrific. It will end up as an exhibit at the Bear Center or a short program for the theater there. Exciting video will bring home the point that what most people consider ferocious behavior and a prelude to an attack has always been, in our experience, harmless, ritualized expressions of anxiety. The presentation will also include their amiable vocalizations (grunts and tongue-clicks), the explosive blowing sounds accompanied by body language that expresses anxiety, and the black bear?s human-like voice that expresses a range of emotions.

2. A major network is going to interview me to spread that message.

Aside from that, I felt flattered recently that an e-magazine known for its high quality nature pictures asked if they could use a couple of mine. They asked for the picture of the mother brown bear touching noses with her cub and another one that I forgot. I sent both. They now sent me a link to the first one as it appears in the e-magazine: Crown of the Continent. http://crown-yellowstone.umt.edu/E-Publications/default.htm If you click on the link, scroll down to Summer-Fall 2015 and click on the download link next to it. The picture is on page 6. They said they were holding the second brown bear picture for a possible upcoming cover. All gratis, which might be why they picked my pictures. Seeing the picture reminded me of good times leading bear-viewing groups for John Rogers (no relation) of Katmai Coastal Bear Tours, which I would like to do again one of these years.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Cal! Non country girl me wonders what a flake of hay is? :D I know that Hyacinth episode very well! Poor Richard hiding in the phone booth! Yesterday's episode here was about Daddy and his adventure in the toy department with Hyacinth trying to keep Mrs. Councillor Nugent from going inside the store where Daddy  (dressed in a space suit) and Richard are talking to the police. In this episode Richard hasn't retired but the retirement is in the works. He is very depressed! :D It's already in the 60's here today! They say that storm heading your way will go north of us and we might get some rain for a couple days. This time last week I was shoveling snow and hating every minute of it!  Lol with trying to be quiet so the girls wouldn't hear you! What color did you paint? I need to paint. Just need to get off my butt and do it!

Jp, love those 70's temps! The pink roses are beautiful!

Ra, a jockey, how cool! The closest I've ever been to a jockey is our statue of a jockey holding a lantern on the deck!  I like Liz's hair now, too! I missed her the other day on Live with Kelly and Michael. I didn't know she was really pregnant! Wonder how that will play out on the show? Glad your grands finally got to visit!

Obsver, about this time back in 1975 we had a bad snow storm with bitter cold temps. My sis still lived at home and was working at Perkins Pancake House. Our dad attempted to put tire chains on sis's car so she could get to work. Doing so he had a heart attack! The doctors said the strain and the bitter cold brought on the attack. He never completely recovered and had to take early retirement. He died a year later of a massive heart attack. Everyone needs to take it easy when dealing with the snow and cold temps. I hate winter so much. I've said this before and I know I'll say it again...you were the best teacher ever! I wish I could have had a teacher like you! I would be so much smarter! You made learning fun!  Sounds like you got a really nice hair dryer! I have a little blow dryer that cost me $17 at Walmart! It probably won't last long! But then I rarely use it! My hair being so short air dries in just a few minutes! :D

Nora, glad you and Sparky had a nice walk! Hope the storm misses you!l

Spent yesterday putting away snowmen decorations and then putting out Valentines stuff! Going to Robin's today and help her do the same! Something doesn't sound right here...I go help her but no one helps me! Hmmm! :-\

37 and sunny again, love it!  Sparky and I made it around our double-long block again today.  It's hard with my heavy winter boots, but at least the streets were clear (for now).  I see we're still under a blizzard watch for Wednesday.  :-\

Hi Jewelies!  Another beautiful day!  Started out chilly, but ended up great!  The tree guy and his crew came this morning and were done within 40 minutes!!  It was very entertaining to watch them, climbing in the trees and scurrying around like a bunch of ants!  Very impressive crew, they all had their jobs and did them well.  I love the way the trees look now!  Next, I'm going to try to get in touch with the guy who owns the land behind me.  He lives in TX, but he inherited the land from his dad.  Their barbed wire fence is attached to at least one tree, and they have a lane right on the other side of the trees I want to take down.  The trees are very big oak trees that would hit my house if they fell.  They're the kind of oak that isn't very pretty... scrub oak, I've heard them called.  Anyway, as soon as I get permission for the tree crew to use the lane for their trucks, I'm going to have all three of them taken out.  The grands helped me in the yard today and earned some spending money.  So many leaves... they told me I need to cut down all the trees and plant all pine trees instead!  lol

Nora... Glad you and Sparky are getting some nice walks in while the snow lets you.  Hope you don't get a blizzard this week!

cal...  I had to laugh at you trying to sneak around so the girls wouldn't hear you.  Seems like when you want to be quiet is when you fall over stuff!  lol   That was DEFINITELY a feral cat in the puzzle!  lol  I can't believe you painted your bedroom yesterday!   I mean, you have all this extra time... lol  You're the busiest person I know!  Don't know how you do it all!

rues... A flake of hay...  lol.  When you have a bale of hay, it's in sections called flakes.  Usually they're about 3" wide...

obsver... Glad you got a new hair dryer.  Sounds like a good one!

JP... Did you have a nice, sunny day today?

Hope everyone is doing good, Hi to all!

Hi Cal! Sounds like you need a revolving door for BooBoo and Houla! :D  Get in, get out! Lol! We went to Outback for dinner this afternoon and I asked Crow and Robin if they knew what a flake of hay was. They both figured it must be like a slice of hay! Lol! What city folk we are! Lol! I would love to come to your place and help you out and learn a few things, too! What fun we would have!  I like beige or tan paint colors myself. Good neutral color. Bet your rooms look really nice! You have a head start on spring cleaning! Robin is like Boobie...she uses colors. She's used brick red, sage green, gray, brown and even purple! Sure glad when she painted over that purple with blue! Lol!

Ra, wow, the tree trimmers were fast! I agree with your grand's about planting pine trees...no leaves! Evergreens are so pretty especially with snow on them!

Yikes! Downton is on! See you tomorrow!

Hi rues!  It was funny... one of the guys, when they were getting ready to leave, said to me "Sorry, we took so long."    :D

Lily made a house call at the WRI

I was greeted again this morning with a heavy rain on the roof.  This is so unlike a normal January, well February, now.

May all of you have a grand start to our 29 day February.

Lucky and Holly Again - UPDATE January 31, 2016

Pileated pair
Pileated pair
I am so glad Holly gave up her digs to be with Lucky. Lucky is glad, too. I know it sounds anthropomorphic, but Lucky looks truly loving in his eyes and gentle behavior as he snuggled with Holly last evening. See what you think in this 5-minute video https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ZMjuLAaDbS0.

Midday today, Holly gave a good look at her face as she looked at the camera from only inches away. She then settled into raking, but not to improve her nest. The raking was so deliberate with a look of such high interest (extended upper lip), that I suspect she was looking for something (a vole?) in the straw, as shown in this 11-minute video https://www.facebook.com/ toni.embree.50/videos/ 1178122058887089.

Pileated female
Pileated female
Today the pileated woodpeckers came as a pair. It?s the first time I?ve seen them together in months. Neither seemed to mind me standing in the glass door less than 10 feet from them. Pileateds have a reputation for being so wary and skittish. This pair doesn?t seem to miss a thing but are not disturbed by a person at the glass door. I suspect it?s probably the old pair and will have to check pictures from former years. The white line over the eye seems to differ with individuals. You can tell the newcomer is a female because she has a black (not red) mustache stripe and has a dark front to her crest.

On New Year?s Eve, we celebrated 200,000 likes on Facebook for Lily The Black Bear. Now, a month later, it?s 203,000. Welcome all.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi, Jewelies! I'm disgusted I can't do everything I used to do. I spent yesterday doing major cleaning & organization in the basement and today, trying to decide whether or not to go to the chiropractor. It's a 45-min. drive. I know, cal, that is nothing compared to what you sometimes have to drive. The back of the car is filled with stuff to be recycled--we put stuff in bags of Purina Cat Chow bags---really handy for that. One of the recycle stations is only about 5 min. from us. The bins are HUGE, we don't have to sort it like we used to.

Rues, you are a real sweetie to say that about my teaching! I do miss it. My hair is really short, too, but it lays better if the dryer fluffs it up and I use the hair pick halfway through. If it lays wrong while it is wet, It is like it is set in cement-just wetting it a little wouldn't fix it-I'd have to stick my head under the faucet.  Cal, that flake of hay WOULD sort of be like a slice, wouldn't it?  Ra, sounds like you have quite a tree project going. Most of the trees in my yard are really old, darn it. Wish I had a bunch of tulip trees.

Many years ago, my son & friends had been playing with a nylon cord stringing  it in the trees. When I was mowing, the cord dropped down across my neck. I immediately grabbed it with my hand to get it off my neck--mower was old, didn't have stop safety feature, so it just kept going. Thought I was going to be decapitated or cord was going to cut off my fingers. I was dragged off the back of the mower. Then, I had to run to the mower and turn off the key. I had wounds across my neck and fingers. Nylon cords do not give way or stretch! I've had some interesting times with mowing yard! Also once in trying to mow under the swinging see-saw on the swing set, got it hooked on the mower and almost tipped the whole thing over. Good times.   Ra, I did remember yours pants episode with the branch when you were first talking about your trees recently, but I wasn't going to mention it. lol

Hope all you wonderful Jewellies have a good day. Sun is trying to shine through the clouds here.

When I go out to the pole barn to feed cats, I start singing, in case of raccoons or other creatures like coyotes, etc. so I don't surprise them. Ever since I saw a tribute to Carol King, I can't get her songs out of my head. When I go in to the barn bellowing, "Will you still love me tomorrow?", I'll bet the cats say, "Oh dear God, here she is again. Why can't she just shut up and leave the food?" lol
