Good morning jewelies! It is 26 here. i hope dr. rogers goes ahead and puts in a den cam even if he wipes it clean omg at some point..he will have to take risk for the bears. he is the leader for them so to speak and must take a risk.. i would..if he gets fined asked us lily fans to help with the court cost. we will come through for him. and at his age doubt if that being on his record would hurt him that much. sick of that pos dnr..want dr. rogers to stand up to them. at least the pos can't say a word about holly and lucky..hope that burns them up.

Hi JP! love that picture RC and yes she is such a good mom!! I am running late but what else is new. babe is already up and i have to bring her out to the kitchen and this and that..sorry you don't feel well was it my circle puzzle yesterday? hope you get better lots of football today.

Good afternoon Jewelies! Awoke to sunshine! That's always a good way to start the day! :D

Cal, I wish Dr Rogers would put the cams in, too. But I can understand his reasons not to.  >:(  That DNR guy is so hateful.  Crow somehow managed to stay up and watch the entire game. Thank goodness they won! :D About 2:30 am, Molly woke me up barking! Seems she decided to sleep in her dad's bed since he wasn't in it. So when he finally came to bed she didn't want to get out of it! They had a little disagreement over it and she lost! :D Crow has been napping off and on all day! And he's  a little cranky! Yep, he knew McKellen was Gandalf, too! Did I ever tell you that Boo's brother was named Gandalf? Robin and Nate (the ex boyfriend, thank god) gave their friend Eric one of the pups. He named him Gandalf!  :D Every once in awhile I find Vicious on but never on the same day or time. I don't know what's up with that!  Hope Babe has a good Sunday! Cute pony puzzle!

Jp, feel better soon! Nice pic of that good mom RC!

Here is our Fern

I can not believe that the Dullphins beat the Patriots yesterday.  Unbelievable but true.

Also note that Alabama is a 7 point favorite over Clemson.  I certainly hope the odds makers are wrong.

I Feel about the same as I did yesterday.  I think it is a result of overdoing the holidays, consumption wise.

Thinking about Wednesday when I have to go  to Miami for the eyeball thing.

I hope everyone is ready for the first full week of 2016.  Wishes for a good one.

Lucky, Holly, BBC - UPDATE January 3, 2016

Terry raking leaves into den - October 11, 1989
Terry raking leaves into den - October 11, 1989
Play continues. A Lily Fan captured this video of little Holly on top of big Lucky as they enjoyed a good session of gentle play bites last evening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZ5sA6cQtEs.

Then today, Holly showed us behavior we haven?t seen to this extent before and might never have seen without a Den Cam. Holly was raking, then at 2:14 minutes into the video she went into spasms of what I believe was sneezing. If it weren?t winter, my first thought would have been that she was stung by a bee. At about 2:29 into the video, Lucky gently reaches out to touch her, making a person wonder how much feeling was behind that touch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV-nVfcnbgs.

With My Bear Family and Me playing in countries around the world, a Lily Fan found a link that lets a person watch all three 1-hour episodes (Spring, Summer, Autumn)?an unusual opportunity. http://bbcbentomatics.lunchbox.pbs.org/the-bear-family-and-me.

In going through old and new images to enlarge for the upper walls of the Bear Center, I found some that stirred old memories. This picture from October 11, 1989 is a treasured moment. Reading my diary from the month leading up to that day made me doubly appreciate the Lily Fan who typed my hand-written notes so I could use word-search to answer questions. The bear is 4-year-old Terri. Inside the den are her two cubs Gerry and Mary. For the past several years, my research team and I had been walking with bears for 24 or 48-hour periods and recording every action on a waterproof field-computer. Terri gave me my first chance to watch a bear prepare a den. She had moved to this den less than a day before. A film team from Italy was filming a documentary about these bears for PBS Nature. I did the unpopular thing of suspending filming so I could do a 24-hour watch and get the kind of data that would be unlikely with company. She ignored my presence when I joined her at 1:08 PM. I was old hat. She continued lethargically raking leaves into the den for bedding. I lay down and began recording data. At times, Terri walked by within 3 feet paying no attention to me. I had no food and was inconsequential to her. Gerry emerged from the den, came over, and snuggled against me for a nap. We had a special bond. She licked my hand and closed her eyes. As she dropped into a slumber, I put my finger on her femoral artery and felt it drop to as low as 22 beats per minute?so different from summer activity rates I had measured at well over a hundred. Cub heart rates are generally much higher than adult heart rates, so I was surprised to find Gerry?s heart beating even slower than the 36/minute I had measured for Terri as she slept a few days earlier. I could only imagine how low Terri?s heart had fallen by this day.

All three bears, all females, had dry urinary hairs. They were done scent-marking for the year. Both cubs attempted to nurse, but Terri got up and walked away each time like I had seen other mothers do in fall. I thought Terri was done suckling for the year but know better now, thanks in large part to the Den Cams.

About 4 PM, Terri and Mary entered the den for the night. Gerry followed. They were smart to be inside. It rained off and on during the night. About 7 AM (October 12), I heard whining, which was probably the cubs attempting to nurse again.

I tried calling the film team by walkie-talkie, which we used back then. I couldn?t reach them, but they were good to let me complete my 24-hour watch. They showed up mid-afternoon and filmed until dark.

On October 14, I heard the hum of suckling as I arrived. It was supposed to be a family day, so I had brought 7-year-old Colleen with me. The bear family knew her. Eventually the family emerged to do more raking. Gerry?s heart rate was 46 standing and 36 sitting. Colleen wanted to be a veterinarian and take care of animals, so I showed her how to take Gerry?s heart rate, which she did. I felt inside Gerry?s mouth. One of her baby canines was gone with the adult canine protruding beyond the gum.

On October 15, it was getting dark as I arrived at the den. All was quiet. Eyes glowed from the den entrance. Temperatures were dropping. Intermittent rain turned to snow overnight. I didn?t hear a peep from the den the entire 14 ? hours I was there. That was my last visit of the year.

On March 10, 1990, Donna and I stopped by and saw that the bears had not been out yet. No tracks in the snow. We stayed back 30 feet or so and talked quietly, but we couldn?t fool Gerry. She whined in recognition as we left.

Gerry, who turns 27 this month, is just 2 years younger than Shadow the matriarch of the clan we have studied since 1996. Recalling what it took to glean bits of data in decades past makes me very much want to take advantage of the advances in technology we have today.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi, Jewelies! May you all have a wonderful new year!!!  I've been doing a Walking Dead marathon--I had never seen the first two seasons. Must be therapeutic--hasn't given me any bad dreams so far! Read that the boy who plays Carl started on the series when he was 10.  Started a new book by David Baldacci called The Guilty. All you Jewelies would probably like his books. Mr. O is reading the newest Stephen King. Anyone else reading something they really like? We woke up to about an inch of snow this morning. The most snow stayed up around South Bend & Lake Michigan.

Jp, good luck Wed. Hope you don't have to go back for awhile. Cal, interesting that Augie is better behaved when Jim isn't there. That attack on Corey sounds completely scary to me!! Ra, did you have the grands much during vacation?  You probably have to work just as hard during then, don't you?  Rues, I like reading about what it's like to sleep with Boober. We slept with our Kelsey for 17 years. She liked to crowd against our legs. Dlong, bischue, Willi, Nora, Deb, Pat, neva, chippy, thinking about you.

Hi Jewelies! Picked Robin up at the airport last night. Her plane was early....2 minutes! Lol! Only 6 passengers aboard so no traffic jams at arrivals like at the big airports! Lol! In fact, arrivals and departures are in the exact same spot! Lol! Robin was a little worried about making her connection in DC when there  was a back up of planes waiting to leave JFK. She said there were 6 planes ahead of hers. After a 30 min wait they were finally off and in the air. In DC she had to run like a race horse to make it to the connecting flight and she made it!

Cal, I missed the first 9 mins of Downton last night. I hope I can watch it on my iPad. Told Robin last night that we couldn stay after we dropped her off at home because Downton was on! O?:D Gandalf's owner Eric was a good dog owner until  he got married and had kids. Then he didn't have time for him. He has an uncle that really liked Gandalf so Eric gave Gandalf to him. Robin said the uncle has a nice farm and Gandalf is very happy there. Now Nate, who was a very nice guy, was with Robin for 10 years and never wanted to work and couldn't keep a job. He would have loved being a house husband if they got married which never happened! He has/had no ambition to better himself. Awhile back he was arrested for stealing a ladies purse from her unlocked car. He got probation and now lives with his mom in Ohio. He still has Boo's brother Kessel.   Robin and Crow have both read all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books. He borrowed all Robin's Star Wars dvd's to watch when football is over! Hope I can remember to watch those 3 episodes of My Bear family and me.

Jp, looks like Fern is just hanging out on the deck! Those eye shots sure come around fast! Hope you feel better soon!

Obsver, we had a dusting of snow this morning. Then scattered snow flurries off and on all day. Tonight down to 15! :o  The weather guy says more flurries coming from your direction! I don't want them, you can keep them! Lol!  Would Kelsey move over if you asked her to? Boo won't budge!

Rues, nope, she wouldn't move on her own. Every single morning, I'd reach down and kiss her beautiful face and head.

Cal, yes, Kelsey looked a lot like the Houla & your Calhound. The name of the Stephan King book is The Bazaar of Bad Dreams. It's a book of short stories.

Hi Cal, that was Mrs. Hughes who was worried about what her husband to be Mr Carson would expect after their marriage! :D I was able to watch the minutes I missed on my iPad. Not much happened then. So sorry that Babe is having such a bad time of it today. Hope she can sleep thru the night. Poor thing. :( I know how hard all this is for you, too. We are glad that Nate is in the past. He is a very sweet likable person who just never wanted to work. He comes from a family of slackers. I know that's a horrible thing to say but it's the truth! How Robin ever stayed with him so long is a mystery to us! I think he'll be 41 in Feb!  Crow plans on watching all those movies. May take him awhile though! He hasn't read the Harry Potter books just saw the first 2 movies. I don't recall him ever saying he read Lonesome Dove but I know he liked the movies.

Obsver, what a sweet memory of Kelsey. How's that Julie doing?

Hey Ra, where are you?
