cal, yes, during the VietNam war I was serving in submarines.  Patrick was in an Army engineer outfit in the Da Nang area and David, my other son, was with an Air Force bomb group flying out of Burma.  That reminds me, I have to sing the Beatles song "When I'm 64" to Patrick Saturday.  It is his birthday.

Speaking of the nickname Babe, my Father-in-law called his wife "Babe" and my wife called her mother that, too.  So, my Mother-in-law was Babe to me as well.

Nothing but good thoughts to all on this Friday morning.

Give MN Day, Much Happening - UPDATE November 12, 2015

SnowfallOn this day of giant snowflakes, big things are happening, thanks to Lily Fans. At 8:45 this morning, the GiveMN leaderboard said Lily Fans had given us a good start with donations of $23,200; but then the GiveMN folk started having the same problems as last year. Lily Fans are finding it hard to donate. All we can do is keep trying until midnight. If GiveMN doesn?t accept your donations, please send checks to North American Bear Center, PO Box 161, Ely, MN 55731 or to the Wildlife Research Institute, 1482 Trygg Road, Ely, MN 55731.

Through it all, the Bear Center staff is doing hourly podcasts. I don?t know how Scott Edgett, Judy Thon, and Sharon Herrell can keep it up. They never went to bed last night and will keep going for the duration this evening. It was/is the same for the entire volunteer GiveMN team. Thank you all!

The podcast at 8 AM was fun for Donna and me. Donna was wonderful. She showed her good heart and knows how to have fun.

Kelly Godfrey, Program Director for the International Wolf Center, came and talked about the great cooperation our organizations share.

Cherie Sonsalla, Director of the Ely Chamber of Commerce, thanked everyone who supports the Bear Center and said it is one of Ely?s major attractions, that it helps her sell Ely, and that she was so excited for the awesome, beautiful, unique Ecology Hall that will draw more people to Ely.

Lily fans can take pride in those words. You know how you helped make it all happen.

An alert Lily Fan noticed a mistake in last night?s update where I listed Jewel as having cubs when everyone knows, including me, that she had cubs last year and is currently lying in a den ready to give birth to her next litter in January. On that topic, Willow and Wendy, two of Donna?s 4-year-old daughters each had 2 cubs in 2015. Willow had two daughters, Amy and Allie. Wendy had a son and a daughter, JoJo and Sidney (female).

Lily Fans have been asking about the 2016 Calendar. I?m told I can announce that we will have a great NABC Ambassador Bear Calendar ready to send out in time for Christmas.

cal, there generally has always been a policy in the services not to place all of one's family members in the same service or unit.  In WWII  an exception was made to allow the 5 Sullivan brothers to serve together as they had requested this.  They were serving on board the U.S.S. Juneau, a light cruiser, in November 1942 when it was sunk in the battles off Guadalcanal, with the loss of all 5 brothers.  Since then there has been a "sole survivor" policy which was what the movie "Saving Private Ryan' was all about.

Eaglette sorry to hear your dad had another heart attack.  I lost my dad to one in 1977.  His first heart attack was in 1971 with a big family history for it.  He refused surgery because it was relatively new then and they gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery and whatever the problem was they said it would have to be done again in a few years.  Now that stuff is almost routine.  It's too bad they couldn't help more with his atrial fibrillation, but like you say, sometimes the risks outweigh the benefit.  No you don't want to bury your parents, but at least he's had a lot of life compared to so many children that die of things.  Big hugs!!

That sounds like quite the boat race JP!  Have you ever watched them?

Gee JP, that must have been really hard for your wife having you AND both sons serving during the Viet Nam war.  Also for you worrying about them.  Oh wow I just saw this "I was serving in submarines.  Patrick was in an Army engineer outfit in the Da Nang area and David, my other son, was with an Air Force bomb group flying out of Burma."    So glad that's all over and all three of you came home after doing a great job.  Just saw Cal's comment about more than one son at the same time.  I thought I remembered something about that too.  Maybe it was husband and wife not going at the same time, or at least into combat?  OK just saw your reply to that.

I like the name Spanky for Shadow's cub.

Hi Jewelies! 

Well, just kill me now! My favorite radio station, 94.9, that plays oldies started playing Christmas music yesterday!! So thank goodness for iPods. I listened to it to go to sleep last night. What is wrong with people??? And the first song I heard was Jingle Bell Rock (I have come to hate that song). Humbug attack over now 

JP Did you see this thing yesterday? Do you have a lot of them? Do they ever come ashore? Do you have basements there?





These little sun bears are at the National Zoo. They are brothers.

 

Bei Bei weighs almost 12 lbs now! This picture was in their update. He looks like he is not thrilled to be measured! So cute!

dlong,  Waterspouts are tornadoes at sea.  Just as tornadoes spin off thunder storms over land spouts spin off over water.  They are to be avoided at all costs.  Once in a while one does come ashore and can cause great damage.  In my years at sea I have seen many and they are often seen here.  They probably have water spouts in the Great Lakes.  No basements here the water table is just a few feet underground.

Nora, I have watched many of the races over the years but none lately.  Many have resulted in injury or even death as the boats can flip and overturn.  They reach speeds up to 150 knots or mores..

Speaking of waterspouts, her is a blurb from the encyclopedia:

If you're looking for waterspouts, head for the Florida Keys, which "are the greatest, natural vortex lab in the world," according to NOAA meteorologist and waterspout expert Joseph Golden. "Waterspouts probably occur more frequently in the Florida Keys than anywhere in the world."

Waters around the Keys, especially from Marathon past Key West on westward to the Dry Tortugas, probably see 400 or 500 waterspouts a year, he said. Since they are so common, most go unreported unless they cause damage.

Hi Jewelies! I had to log in. Haven't done that in awhile! Had to get my password book out to see what my password and username was for the forum! I can never remember those things! Thank you Dlong, Cal and Obsver  for sending me these horrible winds! They have been blowing now for 2 days! And it's a cold wind! You should see the oak leaves in my driveway! This afternoon I mowed our yard for the last time this year! Then Crow drained the oil out of the mower and cleaned it up a bit. I did the same to my weed eater. Waiting till next week to mow Robin's yard so it will look nice because she is having company stay with her next weekend. Her very good friend died last week from cancer.  Gayla fought a hard battle for over a year now but lost the fight. She was only 36. Local friends decided to have a celebration of Gayla's life at a local pub where she enjoyed hanging out at. Wilson and Tela will be staying with us then. Robin brought Tela up last night so our animals could get used to her! Tela was a little overwhelmed! She may be staying in my bedroom all weekend.

Cal, I'm so happy Babe did so well last night!  I don't know what my mom would have done or said if I called her Babe!  Crow has always called me Babe and my older sis has always called me Sissy. My sister in law taught my step niece ( her child from previous marriage) to call me Aunt Pammy Jo which drove me nuts. Snow in MN! Eck!

Jp, I was wondering how your wife was able to get through that time when her 3 men were at war together. It must have been dreadful for her. Relieved, I'm sure when you all came home safely. Those water spouts are scary!

Ra, two years ago I finally bought a crape myrtle. They aren't hardy here unless we have a mild winters. For several years the winters weren't so bad and everyone's crape myrtles were beautiful! So I got one on sale at Lowes at the end of the season. I planted it and we had a horrible winter. The bush died to the ground. I left it alone and it grew a couple feet tall. So then last winter was bitter cold and it died back to the ground again! This summer it grew about 3 foot tall. Hoping with El Ni?o, this winter will be kind to my myrtle and it will bloom for me next summer! Will you dig yours up or let it grow back where it is? I would love to have a pecan tree! Have you ever gotten a lot of nuts from it? That's so sweet that your brothers called you Babe!

Dlong, great pics! My fav radio station starts Christmas music non stop on Thanksgiving Day! We were in Kmart today and they were playing Christmas music. One of my dad's favorite...Burl Ive's Have a holly jolly Christmas!  Did you hear Kmart is bringing back Blue light specials? One time when Robin was about 4 she flipped the switch on the blue light and had it flashing! How embarrassing for me.

Nora, we ended up having to call the gas company to come to the house because the next day there was a gas smell in the oven again! It's all fixed now!

Obsver, a hawk got a bird from my feeder this morning right after I filled up the feeders! Guess the hawk has to eat, too. Still sad, though.

Isis they think just attacked paris bad. killed 100 inside a theatre more at restaurants outside the stadium playing soccer the president of France was there. all planned think in retaliation of killing that pos isis who cut off heads. last week Russian plane down big alerts here now. wonder who will finally drop the big bomb on isis? they killed the two attackers at the theatre.

Thank you for all you did yesterday for bear education. Many people worked hard to make the day a success, but it is Lily Fans that truly make it a success. I?m still waiting for final numbers, but I believe we had more donors than any organization in our ?medium? GiveMN group.

The snow from yesterday became the first snow of this warm fall to stick. Trygg Road is down to one lane with the heavy snow on the bushes. The driveway has a new look compared to October 10.

I usually don?t get involved in state or province bear management issues. Where I can be most effective for bears is showing what they are really like?education. But it is wrong to hunt black bears in spring when orphaned cubs are doomed to die. Their deaths are not fair chase or quick kills.

I can?t think of another species that is hunted at a time of year when the young are totally dependent. Why are black bears disrespected like that. Is it a carryover from the old varmint mentality that I work to overcome? So 16 years ago, I helped end Ontario?s spring bear hunt with this affidavit http://www.bearstudy.org/website/images /stories/images/Updates_2015/Affidavit.pdf Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources biologist Ken Morrison estimated that a spring hunt orphaned 274 cubs. Now Ontario is experimenting with bringing back the spring hunt. They had spring hunts in limited areas the last two years. Out of the blue today, a heart surgeon from California called to talk about a relatively new area of medical research on Endogenous Cannabinoid Receptors in the brain and the possibility that Receptors CB-1 and CB-2 are involved in black bear hibernation. CB-1 is involved in glucose metabolism, and CB-2 is involved in fat metabolism. He wondered if I might have blood glucose data from hibernating bears. I do from my old study back in the 1970?s?from hibernating bears and active summer bears. I?ll send him the data.

I have the data thanks to having been able to work and co-author papers with wonderful Dr. Ulysses S. Seal, a top physiology researcher at the Veteran?s Administration Hospital at Fort Snelling in the Twin Cities. Many researchers remember Uly Seal fondly and respectfully.

Good morning jewelies! It is 33 here. that picture of the snow in the driveway in the update will be me someday soon!! beautiful one of the fall driveway. i didn't read all the update so can't comment on it. i had to clean up the barn and put sodas mask on her open the door. i left the girls in last night. went out to let them out since idiot neighbor quit shooting his rifle it was dark but heard all the coyotes so thought just leave them in. came in and babe had manage to get up poop and then fall in it and smear it all over the rug and wood part of my bedroom floor. got all that cleaned up her cleaned up got her out to pee some more put her on her pillows in the kitchen hurried in here and this computer had shut down for window defender crap and update. so went over to my new one and posted the update came back here finally it was ready to go. my dog shames and puzzles on this one.

Hi JP! Love that burt. been watching the world news since 2 am on the isis stuff with poor paris. now paris has declared war on them who hasn't and yet they are still here. they will get a bomb and start taking out countries. paris said death toll now at 118 and it was a football game they were bombing outside of not soccer. suicide idiots.

I got to go feed babe i hear her in the kitchen. hope jim can watch her for me so i can get out and go to the store. hi to all you guys!
