lupine... Are you ready for some snow yet?

Have a good evening, all!

Loon Marooned - UPDATE October 25, 2020
25 October 2020
 Print Email
Loon needing help
Loon needing help

On the way to the WRI, I saw the loon and knew it had a problem. I grabbed a camera and went back to see. The lake is right next to Highway 169. I pulled over and, as traffic whizzed by, snapped some pictures out the window.

Loon trying to take off
Trying to take off...

With the temperature in the 20?s, open water had shrunk to the small area in the picture?too small for a loon to take off. With their heavy bodies and small wings, they have to patter across the water farther than any water bird I know of to lift off. The open water is now too small.

Loon almost airborne
Almost airborne...

The loon tried over and over to take wing?always with the same result. In this sequence, the loon began by flapping hard and pattering across the water with its huge feet. It got up almost far enough for its wings to clear the water and then saw that it was running out of water and had to abort. It tried to land on the little water still available but skidded onto the thin ice causing it to splinter and the wave causing a jagged splinter in the ice. The loon swam back through the shards of broken ice to try again.

Loon trying to land before it runs out of water
Trying to land before it runs out of water...

As I watched, the loon also dove for food but never brought up a fish. It took a nap for 10-15 minutes and then resumed its efforts to fly away?always trying to take off heading west. Less than a mile in that direction are two deeper lakes that are slower to freeze. There was no wind to help it get airborne.

Loon having skidded onto ice
Skidding onto the ice...

I got several calls from people who spotted the loon?s predicament and wondered what to do.

Loon swimming back into the open water
Swimming back into the open water.

With a cold night coming (temperature now 24?F) I suspect the small open area will freeze over tonight. My suggestion would be to use a boat and oars to break open this very thin ice in a wide path at least a hundred feet long; or, if there is no open water, net the loon and take it to one of the open lakes. Loons cannot take off from land or ice; but once airborne, they are fast flyers as they migrate from here to the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.

Good morning everyone- it is 28 and just started to snow; the front must have slowed down yesterday- i waited all day for snow! We did get to do a little leaf peeping yesterday- really nice in some areas and in some areas all the leaves were down.

We got home just in time for the noon kickoff.  Steeler game was good. I didn't realize the Steeler schedule had changed. I was expecting the Ravens and was a but confused to see the Titans.  Anyhow a win for the Steelers! And then i watched your Chiefs cal. What a game for them. Nice to see snow there too.

rues- i understand Robin's dilemma- a name will come to her if winnie isn't right!  I have been watching Dr. Jeff but have trouble seeing the new ones. I always seem to catch the old ones though i don't mind watching them again.

I hope that loon gets to take off today. Maybe Dr. Rogers will break up some of the ice.

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
The Loon - UPDATE October 26, 2020
26 October 2020
 Print Email
After seeing the loon trying over and over to take flight yesterday, I woke up before dawn thinking of how I could help. I drove to Robinson Lake and aimed my headlights at the open water. Loon at 8:38am
Loon at 8:38am
The loon was still there?its head stretched tall with alertness toward my lights shining out of total darkness. I went on to the WRI and did some work. When it got light, I returned to the lake and snapped a picture at 8:38 AM, showing the loon in a patch of open water that was only a fraction of yesterday?s. There was no way it could take flight. With a temperature of 22?F, ice was continuing to close in.

I called a fisherman friend to see if he had a big landing net for catching and moving the loon to a lake that was still open. I went home to get the local conservation officer?s number. I was hoping he would join me or at least give me permission to help the loon. I drove to the site to describe to him the situation of the moment. I arrived at 12:11 PM. No loon! And no sign that people had been there. I had been Chickadee
Chickadee
seeing eagles flying over, and the only thing I could think of was that an eagle had snatched the loon like Donna and I had seen happen to a duck a couple years ago. Naturalist Sherry Abts (correct spelling) also stopped by the site and saw something important. She put out an email saying ?there seemed to be some big wing prints ( maybe eagle ??) in the snow near the ice edge. Also a track like something had been pulled / drug out of the water.?

It appears there was a natural end to this story. We?ll never know why this loon stayed a week or two later than other loons in the area. Earlier, I don?t think there was much we could have done when there was more open water.

Loons are a favorite of wildlife enthusiasts in this land of lakes. To many, the loon is the voice of the wilderness. There was a lot of interest in this loon?s fate.

The loon exhibit at the Bear Center is a favorite of many. The stuffed loon in that exhibit was contributed by the same conservation officer who I was going to call for help today.

American Tree Sparrow
American Tree Sparrow
American Tree Sparrow
American Tree Sparrow

On a happier note, a spate of sunshine yesterday let the camera catch good detail in the feathers of an American Tree Sparrow. Today, a chickadee showed the same. The snow that is stirred up around the tree sparrow is because it was looking for seeds by hopping and flicking its feet to kick up snow. They do the same thing with leaves lying on the ground.

Back to normal now, thinking about the book.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- we had a record low high yesterday- very bizarre. 33 i think here.  Then the weather guy this morning said we should feel lucky with the weather we are having. Other parts of the country not so lucky- hurricane in Louisiana-- again! Ice storm forecast in large area with Oklahoma City in it- and winds and fires out west.  What a year this has been!

After the snow Monday night the leaves on the maples fell lazily to the ground yesterday. not much wind so they puddled at the bottom of the trees.  We'll probably get wind later so i won't have to rake. I usually mow them to get the mulch for the grass.  Fill up the compost bin with leaves that are closest to the bin. I finally brought in the last of the chair pads and washed them.  Time to get them stored.

Today is an sil birthday- she is 94- and we're having a Zoom party- 30 minutes. A new experience! No cake- bummer!!

Have a great day jewelies!

Cal, I was so hoping that the loon would be rescued! :'( I know the eagle, if that's what it was, has to eat but that wasn't fair.   How is your knee today? Hope it feels better. I find as I get older it takes longer for me to recover from injuries! I was sore all over the next day   after painting at Robin's. Kitty goes to our vet next Monday just so our vet can have a look at her. The Humane Society gave her all her shots. I think there's a booster shot due in a couple months though. It's free at the Humane Society. We are hoping when we take Kitty back that her siblings have been adopted. I'd hate to see them still in their cage. :(

Lupe, hope your sil had a great birthday today even though it's a little different! I watch Dr Jeff on Animal Planet on Saturdays. The new episodes are on at 9pm my time. They play the reruns most of the day. Like you, I don't mind watching the reruns either! So far we still haven't had a hard freeze. It's nice to see roses blooming!

Ra, more rain heading your way? We may get 3 inches from this one coming. Robin is thinking about calling the kitty, Maui because she loves Hawaii. I told her everyone will think she's saying Meowie! I don't like it. But it's her kitty! Lol! Fixing a pot of  Chili-o chili right now! Yum and thanks! :)

Have  nice evening! Stay safe! :)

Hi Jewelies!  Nice day today... pretty warm, but it's going to change starting tomorrow.

rues... Yes, more rain coming for us!  We're on the stormy side of the storm, so calling for high winds and thunderstorms.  Wish I didn't have to work on Thursday, that's supposed to be the worst day.  You're welcome!  Hope you enjoy your chili!  What do you add to yours?  I add a bunch of stuff... big can of tomatoes, rotel tomatoes, great northern beans, corn, green peppers, and onions.  lol  My daughter doesn't understand why I add corn... I told her it makes the chili prettier.  lol

lupine... Happy Birthday to your SIL!!  Stupid ykw sure is changing everything for all of us!

cal... You fell again??  Oh, my.  Is your knee ok?  Did Jim fix that board for you or did you do it?  Polly's driving test is coming up soon, isn't it?  I hope she does better this time.  Time changes this weekend... wish they would just leave it alone.  Is the Wildcat/Crow game at home or away this week?  Clemson has another home game against Boston College at noon on ABC.  No home game for high school this week... next week is their last home game unless the go into playoffs.

Have a good evening!

Daily Updates
Final Bear News for the Season by Sharon Herrell - UPDATE October 27, 2020
27 October 2020
 Print Email
Ted in den
Ted in den
The end of our season is upon us. The question remains, if/when and where will Tasha den, will she keep Ted awake? Ted has taken a remarkable interest in Tasha as of late.

It was MEA (Minnesota Education Association) weekend in Minnesota this past weekend. Adults and children enjoyed their time at the bear center not only seeing Ted and Tasha, but also feeding the birds. Giggles and smiles were all around as chickadees and nuthatches landed in hands filled with sunflower seed or on hats. The picture is taken by Carolyn with participants permission.

This explanation of Winter Dens is from our website, https://bear.org/winter-dens/.

Bears den in a variety of places. If you suspect something is a den, look for a bed of leaves, although not all bears make beds if they den after snow has fallen. To be sure a bear used a leafy bed, look for a depression 2-4 feet in diameter. Dampen your hand on the forest floor and rub it around on the leaves to see if any dark hair sticks to it.Tasha
Tasha

Standing hollow trees are favorite denning spots, but few trees are allowed to reach the mature stage at which the center rots and becomes hollow. Such trees can be found in portions of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northeastern Minnesota, especially where they were fire-scarred a half century or more ago.

Rock crevices and caves are also used as dens, and these can remain useable for centuries, but usually not by the same bear and usually not in successive years. The den that researchers found being used the most during four decades of study was used three times, each time by a different bear, and each time after an interval of six years.Ted
Ted

Dens are also dug into hillsides or under the root system of a tree. These dens may be dug during the summer months, long before they are needed. Dug dens often collapse after use and therefore are seldom reused.

Bears also may den under the crown of downed trees or in brush piles. Some bears just rake up a bed on the ground near a windbreak.

On Friday while Tasha and Ted enjoyed their pumpkins filled with treats, I walked up to see if Tasha had been using a daybed. She has a nice area under some large balsams and near an outcrop of rock. MEA on trail
MEA on trail
She had been digging near it, but no den noted. She has been using a daybed under the trees. It's dry but she has not raked leaves, of which she has available to her. She has gained enough weight, 365 pounds, and her coat is thick. Her enclosure will remain open for her to use. If she follows last year, she will den between October 27-29.

Ted is snug, he has pushed his straw all around him on the interior of his den.Ted has not been to the scale for a while since the early snow. My guess is that he is between 685-690 pounds. His official weight will be 677 pounds since that was his last weight from the scale.

Spencer and I locked the middle bunker gate and opened the small bear gate, in an effort to give either Tasha another choice or for Holly to use the spring.

Lucky banked his straw in front of his bunker. He will see us in the spring. Lucky was last seen on October 18th, so his official hibernation date is October 19th. His last weight was 500 pounds. I looked at him prior to him banking his straw, and I guess he weighs about 515-520 pounds, but I used my eyes not the scale.

I want to thank all of our Pond Chat Moderators for watching the bears and reporting what they see, your eyes are always valued. I, along with our team, made the decision early last week to allow the bears to rest on Sunday and not be bothered.Shoveling snow
Shoveling snow
Their weight is good and with the exception of Tasha moving around and bothering Ted, there was no need for the bears to be fed. I felt this decision would allow Ted to rest and Tasha to dig. I promise they are in great shape for hibernation.

Spencer will be looking in on the bears in my absence and will be passing on any bear news and information. He and I will be in close communication and will be following my direction even though I am back at home in Michigan.

Thank you all for watching and following our bears. I?ll be back in Ely for Give to the Max Day (weather permitting).

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper
