A mystery male bear that showed up at the WRI. I don't think they ever identified him but they felt that he was familiar with the place.

A Tuesday hello to each of you.  May your day be bright and comfortable.

I am getting my ducks in line for my eye shot trip to Miami tomorrow.

Looking forward to watching the All-Star game tonight.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Ailing Bear, A Memory - UPDATE July 16, 2018
16 July 2018
 Print  Email
Tasha is doing what the wild bears are?eating berries as shown in this 48-second video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm9ZeWBgppwBlueberries
Blueberries

Berries are extra big as well as super abundant?a bumper year for bears. Expecting lots of cubs in 2019.

Sadly, I suspect the ailing bear moved on?a disappointment as we wanted one more opportunity to help this skittish subadult. It was anguishing to see him put his muzzle into a bowl of water and be unable to close his mouth or lap water?getting none. It was anguishing to see him paw at food and put his mouth down making feeding movements with his head but unable to stick out his tongue and get any food. The few things he did get in his mouth he was unable to swallow and ended up dropping and pawing at them to no avail. He is unable to swallow. Once, he twisted his tongue up to the roof of his mouth and had trouble getting his tongue back straight. Everything points to him having a stick caught between his back upper teeth as is common with dogs and is strongly suspected by the two veterinarians I spoke with. He hadn?t been seen this year before Saturday, July 14. He appeared again briefly on Sunday morning but nothing since. He was last seen heading steadily north on Sunday. Photos from the past and present identify him as 2-year-old Dobie, a great great grandson of Shadow (Shadow, Blackheart, Dot, Vanna, Dobie). We?ll see if he shows up again. The landowners are staying home to not miss him. They are ready for his next visit. Let?s hope there is one. I want to report another miracle like I reported for Quill a couple years ago.

On a happier note with the LilyPad Picnic starting this Friday, this video shows a good time a few years ago with everyone singing Waltzing With Bears. That song alone brings back another happy memory of when a version of it (Walking With Bears) was the theme song of my old weekly talk show on WELY radio. https://www.facebook.com/jackie.runions/videos/2995978757913

The Black Bear Field Study Course participants are off watching Donna at the moment. A nice day.

Thank you for all you do.

No News on Dobie, Bears and Wolves - UPDATE July 17, 2018
 Print  Email
Sadly, Dobie didn?t show today even though the landowners where he had been spotted stayed home all day to help him. Pete and wolf
Pete and wolf
We wanted to free him of the stick or bone or whatever was causing his problem?both to help him and to learn what could cause such a horrible situation for a bear. Unable to drink, he can?t last long. I?m losing hope.

Lou
Lou
On a lighter note, we saw a trail cam video of a wolf prancing around playfully in front of a bear over twice its size at a feeding station. The bear didn?t seem interested in playing, and the wolf left.

Then, 8 miles from that encounter, we got pictures of a wolf that began playfully jumping on 13-year-old Pete as Pete tried to eat. The landowners said Pete looked a little annoyed but just kept on eating. Maybe there is more to bear-wolf relations than we had thought from the hostile encounters we?d witnessed. Always learning

We thought Donna?s yearling Lou has an especially handsome face, but Pete and Shadow and some others caused more excitement. They are watching Shadow eat as I write this.

Common Mergansers
Common Mergansers

Among the highlights of the pontoon ride today were visiting Lily and Hope?s den, watching a family of common mergansers close by the pontoon as they caught minnows and sometimes rode on the mother?s back. This was the first time I saw merganser young riding on their mother?s back. As many as 3 rode on her back at once. Another highlight was seeing author Michelle Lackner who wrote the book ?Finding Hope? that is for sale at the Bear Center. Michelle paused her kayaking to answer questions about how she came to write the book about Lily and Hope. The eaglets have fledged from their nest.

Adrian Van Dellen caught a shot of a loon streaking past. Loons can fly 75 miles per hour. So we commend him on this shot.

We had a cancellation in the August 5-8 Black Bear Field Course. If a person or a couple would like to fill the vacancy, call Judy Thon at 612-414-0759 or email her at [email protected].

Thank you for all you do.

Cal, I hope that Dr Rogers gets a chance now to help Dobie. Hope it isn't too late. :'(  I don't think we will have to mow tomorrow because the lack of rain. No rain until Friday. Then rain all weekend. We sure need it. I read that there will be a Downton Abbey movie next year! Nice update pics. The babies riding on their mom's back was so cute. That must be a good dog to sit still in the kayak! Kayaking is a big thing here! Seems every other car has one tied to their car roof! That reminds me of the Hyacinth episode where she buys Richard skis for his birthday. Not that he knows how to ski but that they would look good on top their car! Lol!

Jp, hope your eye shot went well!

Jo, I love to sleep with the window open! Love the fresh air. My 48 yr old niece just found out that she is cancer free! She has been battling breast cancer.

Lupe, hope you are having a great time!
