A Fun Day - UPDATE July 13, 2018
 Print  Email
The staff made it a fun day for Ted by giving him his own private pile of cedar chips to roll in as captured by a Pond Chat Moderator.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IukQ2J6mhk.Tasha
Tasha, splayed out in the sun 7-12-18

Yesterday, Tasha showed us how to enjoy a warm day, splayed out in the stream.

For me, it made my day when I ran into bunch of Bear Center visitors who wanted to learn, knew some background, and asked questions. I know there are people like that there every day. I am so glad we all made the Bear Center what it is! It stirs such strong interest in what black bears are really like.

Yesterday, I got a question about whether I?d ever seen bears pacing in the wild. I haven?t. And I?m glad we made the enclosure at the Bear Center what it is so bears can do their wild activities and interact together in forest habitat and cool off in the pond and stream. There is more we?d like to do in the future, if possible.

In the Black Bear Field Study Course, we stopped by the eagle nest on our way pontooning to Lily and Hope?s den of 2010. It has two young eagles this year. June Briggs from the UK snapped this picture.

Thank you for all you do.

hi jewelies! it is 77 here and can feel the humidity already. chance of thunderstorms later on like around 5 pm so hoping for that.  ted is such a cute bear rolling in his chips! sharon so good with him and looks like she needs to roll in the cedar chips with ted keep them bugs off her arms. It is a wonderful place for the bears there. a pond all kinds of stuff to do. ted water tank is full of sparkling clean water. looks like sweets and pearls. bear center is truly a very good place. wow someone from the uk at the black bear field course and got a really good pic of that juvie there!

hi jp! thanks for the good morning and lily with her kids and love the sat adventure day one! Royals lost 9-6. we are 26-67 white sox not the greatest 32-61 and we can not beat them. i dont even remember the series we won. i left the puppies in the kitchen augie slept in my room all night got up went out to pee with the others and wanted right back in my room so he is on my bed with the ac blowing on him. i think jim has lost his dog till it gets cooler again.

hi lupe! okay i probably did not miss much then. i guess with isner anderson match running so long it ran into rafa time. i think rafa shorts need to be bigger in the seat. too tight and he is pulling them out of his butt alot. i just googled about that curfew cause i wonder too about that when you said it.
The 11pm curfew is a Planning Condition applied to balance the consideration of the local residents with the scale of an international tennis event that takes place in a residential area.
The challenge of transport connectivity and getting visitors home safely is also a key consideration.

The curfew was introduced for the opening of the Centre Court roof in 2009.

puppies all the sudden quiet hi to all you guys i feel like its someones birthday today?

Good morning everyone- jp ty for sparkly teapot teddies, mom and babies- wonder what is in that trough? and  poohs adventure day.
cal- ty for the curfew info- thought it had something to do with the neighbors- it's a good thing- today the men finish starting at 7 CST and then the women's match. At 6:30 on USA channel the whole Harry Potter series movies are on. WOW. don't knowif i'll get to see them all and not sure I want to see the ones where I haven't read the book.  Really raining hard here right now- yay.

Got my blueberries yesterday- well hubby went to our Amish store and got them. I was involved in a marathon tennis match watching session. I got one box frozen and packaged and put in containers for the freezer. One more box to go. I just finished my last berries from 2017 last week.

Time for breakfast- oatmeal and blueberries of course. Then some good tennis.
Have a great day jewelies!

Hi everyone- tennis over for the day- too bad Serena lost but i'm still so impressed that she made it to the finals; Novak beat Rafa in 5 sets so he will play Kevin Anderson tomorrow for the men's championship. I was watching the men's doubles and quit to go mow in case it rained again. Got done- came inside and showered and checked the score-- and they were still playing iin the fifth set. Matches lately have been super long. Mike Bryan who usually plays with his brother Bob teamed up with Jack Sock while Bob is injured. They won the  championship in 5 sets. Jack Sock also plays singles but didn't do so well this year.  So one
more day of tennis then we leave on vacay. Trying to get ready.

Had to get new ear buds today- a cat named tank got ahold of them and broke one bud- shouldn't have left them on top of the laptop on the floor.  Saw part of the first Potter movie during their Quidditch game- how fun that would be to fly on a broom.
We got an inch of rain this morning- yay- but now it's hot and humid again.
Dr. Jeff on tonight.

Hi Jewelies! It is 89, the sun is shining but it is pouring down the rain! There is a huge black cloud overhead! So weird. Going to look to the east for a rainbow!

Obsver, hope you are having a nice birthday with your family. I bet you ate something very healthy for your birthday dinner!

Cal, I haven't read yet if all the Murphy Brown gang will be on the new show. I hope they are, if they are still alive! Thanks for the flower show video from Amsterdam. I would love to go there. My brother went there when he was in the Army. He was stationed in Germany. He brought my sister and I back a pair of wooden shoes. We each got one! My shoe is in the attic. My sis's is hanging on the wall in her mud room with an artificial flower in it! I always order daffodil bulbs in the summer and plant them in the fall when they arrive in the mail. I need to get on the ball and place an order soon. As much as I love tulips, I have a hard time getting them to come back each spring. It quit raining and I couldn't find the rainbow!

Lupe, half runner beans are the best green beans! They have huge white beans inside and the green part is so much more meatier than a regular pole bean. Only draw back is that you have to string them! A bowl of half runners and a cut up fresh out the garden tomato alongside is the best meal ever! Crow likes ham or bacon cooked in with the beans. But I prefer no meat at all. Thanks for the Dr Jeff reminder!

Jp, thanks for the pic of Lily and gang! I had to laugh at their names! Dave the bear just made me chuckle! :)

Have a nice evening! :)

Black Bears, Brown Bears, Our Bears, and Chimp Day - UPDATE July 14, 2018
 Print  Email
Black bears are blessed this summer. It is one of those uncommon years with an abundance of their favorite foods: hazelnuts (Corylus cornuta), juneberries (Amelanchier sp.), Bear Ailing
Ailing bear
wild sarsaparilla berries (Aralia nudicaulis), and blueberries (mostly low-bush blueberries [Vaccinium angustifolium] and velvet-leaf blueberries [Vaccinium myrtilloides]). Green berries that will ripen later, such as dogwood and cherries, will also have good crops. More on these and other berries later.

The bears are once again proving that fed bears do not become lazy, dependent, or aggressive, and forget how to forage for wild foods. People who have fed bears for decades are seeing very few bears. In such years (as in 1996 and this year), the big talk is: Where did all the bears go? In years of wild food failures (as in 1985 and 1995), the talk was: Where did they all come from?

What black bears do and what they eat depends upon what the alternatives are. Hazelnuts make an especially big difference to black bears with each ounce (28 grams) holding 17 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbohydrates, and 4 grams of protein for a total of 176-178 calories per ounce. Bumper crops of hazelnuts make a big difference in reproductive success, and the bears are capitalizing on that right now.

This video of a mother brown bear attacking a big male near Kukak Bay in Katmai National Park in Alaska https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ7XVf2jPCk brought back good memories of my days leading bear-viewing groups there in 1996-2006. Groups would see the power of these big bears at the same time they?d see them ignore us and go about their lives. We never had a problem. The video shows the mother being positively savage toward the male and then running back to her cubs, passing very close to a group of viewers without paying any obvious attention to them, as is usual. I hope to return to that place with a group or two someday.

The weights of the four ambassador bears at the Bear Center are Ted 571, Lucky 420, Holly 261, and Tasha 235 lbs. All are up between 10 and 17 pounds since last week. Tasha looked like she appreciated her stream on this hot morning as is captured in this 4:44 minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16LQPJt9ARs .

One of the bear feeding stations saw a sad situation today. A skinny 2-3-year-old male cannot fully close his mouth or extend his tongue beyond his teeth. Probably the reason he was there in this year of abundant wild food was that he cannot pick berries with his lips or teeth and he cannot touch ant larvae or pupae with his tongue to ingest them. He cannot swallow. The landowner can put food in his mouth, but the bear cannot do anything with it. He spits the food out and crushes it with his paw, breaking it into tiny pieces, but he cannot lap them up because he cannot extend his tongue. A veterinarian said the most likely cause is a stick caught sideways between his back upper teeth. Without a permit, I cannot check and extract it if that is the cause. The picture shows his mouth closed and tongue extended as far as he can. I hope to see how he is tomorrow. I suspect he has had this problem awhile.

A Black Bear Field Study Course begins tomorrow.

Today is the first-ever world chimpanzee day, celebrating 60 years since Jane Goodall began her work https://www.facebook.com/janegoodall/videos/10156619379462171. I treasure an email from Jane a few weeks ago saying, ?You have always been a very special person, understanding the proper (!) way to study animals!? (emphasis hers).

The first of the big males to show up after mating season just checked in. It?s 13-year-old Pete, son of June, grandson of 31-year-old Shadow. He is the limping bear I?ve been hearing about for the last couple weeks. He also has some new scars on his head now after the mating season.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- very foggy here so it's humid and warm already-thanks jp for sparkly teddies, the C  and the happy sunday.
cal I agree with your sentiments about the ailing bear- just do it Dr. Rogers. I'm really glad this year is so bountiful for the bears. As a human I tend to forget that food supply motivates all in the natural world. I have wondered this summer about the lack of snakes around here- I usually soo them down by the flower gardens. Hubby has seen some out mowing but I haven't. Food supply must have changed plus I did some moving of railroad ties that border my beds- they were getting uneven and hard to mow around so I did major digging and rearranging. May be that was their summer home- just don't know.

I need to make one more run through the gardens and pull weeds and deadhead flowers be fore we leave. My tall white phlox that is blooming in 3 different places is just beautiful- It had some monarda mixed in with it and the bloom of both were so so- this spring I divided the monarda out and gave it to a friend. with no competition the phlox went wild- love it. Our field is also having a spectacular bloom also- grey headed and purple coneflowers.

Have a great day jewelies!
