T40, thanks for posting.  Interesting story - hope that pair of whoopers will form a strong pair bond and find mating, nesting, and chick-rearing success.

T40, thanks for posting the ruling and sentence... it's a start, and that was a hefty fine... don't know how they would enforce the "can't own a gun for 5 years" part... I haven't read the "fine print" in the articles, but I would rather he be barred from handling or using a gun - what's to stop him from using another person's gun?  The $25k fine helps to underscore the severity of his crime, and I hope they start collecting it and garnish his wages till it's all paid.  I would have preferred to see at least some active jail time in his sentence in addition to the rest of his sentence.  He seems to be one sorry excuse for a human being.  With all that is known about him and what he did and why, an active sentence would seem to be appropriate for his crimes.

baz - Well he is on a long probation and if he violates it I'm sure it'll be straight to jail for him.

Thanks, ginger.  As I said when I posted that, I hadn't read the details yet.

T40, thanks for that article.  It has a good summary of the sentencing points in it.  I think since he avoided any of the possible 6-month active prison time, he should've been given more than 200 hrs of community service, in addition to the other parts of his sentence.  If it had been an accident, I might not feel as strongly about the sentence he received, but apparently from what has been reported, he knew they weren't geese when he shot those two whooping cranes.  It makes me wonder what has to happen that's even worse than this to implement the up-to-6-months prison time the law allows for this criminal act?
