The following is copied from Forum's "Birds in the News" thread where T40cfr403 posted yesterday the news of the shooting and killing of two Whooping Cranes in Texas.
T40's post can be found in that thread at:
http://www.raptorresource.org/forum/index.php/topic,2027.msg453624.html#msg453624

Below is a quote of T40's post along with my reply posted in that same thread.

T40, I hope you don't mind that I'm going to share this post of yours in the Forum's thread for the Operation Migration Whooping Cranes.  I am beyond angry about this!  I don't care how young this person is who shot and killed these 2 Whooping Cranes, he better get an active prison term out of it as far as I'm concerned... The story says the max he can get is 6 months, and I hope he gets sentenced to a good portion of that, and has to serve it.  Someone has to start having the guts to enforce such laws!  What good are these laws without enforcement?

I dont know if they ever jail anyone for shooting bird species.
If I recall right - one only got a $100 fine for killing an eagle.
I may be wrong.  I heard an expert speak to this, but my memory on detail fails me. :(

It sure is too bad OM had to leave cranes in Jawja (Georgia).
If I'd decided I would have crated them to St Marks before taking off for the meeting.
I believe those birds migrate by the sun and earth's magnetic fields as much as eye sight.
Just my lil ole opinion.

The DECISION
January 23, 2016  Sataday

End of Ultralight-guided Migration
Jan. 23, 2016
Joe Duff  -  That?s all she wrote.
The decision was final. There will be no more aircraft led releases.

There are a number of inhibitors to a successful reintroduction of Whooping cranes. Firstly, you need a method of teaching them migration. Then you must get enough of them onto the landscape so a high percentage will survive to reach breeding age. You must ensure they exhibit wild behavior and mate with their own kind.

Operation Migration team has been very successful in achieving those goals.

Despite those achievements, you can only judge the success of a wildlife reintroduction by the ability for the population to produce young and grow to a self-sustaining level.  Of the 240 plus birds released into the EMP, only 10 chicks have survived to fledge.

So why are the offspring not surviving?
Why did so many eggs hatch in 2015 but only 3 chicks survive?  Maybe predation played a role but the more likely cause is inattentiveness of the parents.  Maybe in their early development, hand raised chicks miss some behavior that only real parents can teach.

When animals are raised in captivity for multiple generations they undergo genetic changes that may weaken their ability to persist in the wild. They live on a fixed diet, they don?t fly and they are not subjected to the regular adrenalin rush of avoiding predators. With so few Whooping cranes left, each one is precious and vet teams treat them for conditions that would normally kill untreated birds in the wild.  They live on to produce children with the same predisposition for that illness.

Last August we hired Jeff Fox who has been reading research papers and using the WCEP database to see how the UL method stands up against other techniques. Unfortunately, the more he dug, the more discrepancies he found in that database.
There are more males than females.

shep, thank you for posting that report.  That decision comes as no surprise to me, and I'm sure not to anyone who has been following that storyline, but I am sad to know the UL OM Whooping Crane process will end.  I have read all the background reports and data and opinions and such that I can find on that topic, and there certainly has been some mis-representation of those data by the "powers that be."

Flew away from Decatur Georgia in Clay County

7.20 am  They're off behind Brooke, Rich is chase
Wicked mod kept deleting my posts in the chatroom
mod in chatroom said they boxed #2 and flew the other 5 birds

January 24, 2016
Location:  Decatur County, GA
Pilot Brooke Pennypacker led the birds this morning with Richard van Heuvelen flying in the chase position.
It took some wrangling to get them to form up on the wing of the aircraft but after about 20 minutes they seemed to fall into line.
Brooke will write his lead pilot report later.
