Welcome, Serendipity, to our forum and "thank you" for your beautiful words about trees.  Yes, some do just "hang on" to their leaves, not quite ready to relinquish their life and beauty.

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.  I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach."  Thank you, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.  Your words describe how I feel about Decorah and our eagles. Gardengirl started this wonderful thread, "From the Heart", so here I am to speak from MY heart.

I've just experienced another wonderful week in Decorah, Iowa.  It's my 3rd year now to get the chance to see and hear and feel the wonderment and magic of it all.  To start my days in the quiet of dawn with Mom & Dad Decorah, to watching them fly and glide and soar ever so gracefully in the sky is a feeling I never forget. The thrill of seeing one of their offspring, FOUR, was just as exciting.  New life started again for an eagle.

I met many warm, friendly people over the past week and eagleholics to boot. :)  We all share in the love we have for these eagles and that's what makes this connection so special.  The atmosphere at the hatchery is one of quiet enjoyment.  Smiles and hearts abound everywhere.  Our lives and the eagles lives are tightly intertwined like the nests we see at N1 and N2.  Everything from the horses to deer to birds to wildflowers.....all these things add to our experience.  Throw in some fantastic events...some learning events...some awe-inspiring events..and you have a fun-filled weekend. To be able to see Thora, S.O.A.R's educational Bald Eagle "up close and personal" at Luther College was really something else.  To hear Thora was equally amazing or to hear our Mom & Dad talk to each other.  Wow!

Sometimes I was the first one to arrive at the hatchery.  One evening I was the last one to leave.  I always felt a sense of belonging there at this fish hatchery in Decorah, Iowa.  I felt peace and contentment.  I felt blessed by this moment in time.  I hope anyone reading this gets a chance to go and experience the "magic" that is there.  You'll know when you do.  ;)

I think it's time for this:

When the Frost is on the Punkin

By James Whitcomb Riley

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock,
And the clackin' of the guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens,
And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it's then's the times a feller is a-feelin' at his best,
With the risin' sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

They's something kindo' harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here-
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin' of the bees;
But the air's so appetizin'; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur' that no painter has the colorin' to mock-
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin' of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries-kindo' lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin' sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below-the clover over-head!-
O, it sets my hart a-clickin' like the tickin' of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin' 's over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! ...
I don't know how to tell it-but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin' boardin', and they'd call around on me-
I'd want to 'commodate 'em-all the whole-indurin' flock-
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock!

This is one of my favorite videos at this time of year.  I love it when the little boy takes the mother's hand.  :)

Thank you Walton for reminding me of the REAL meaning of Christmas. The Hallelujah Chorus gives me goose bumps every single time...

Today we attended the funeral of a good friend. The final song of the service was The Hallelujah Chorus. sigh.

Oh, what a lovely idea for a funeral!  I love the Messiah, and I play it all year long.  I even sing along, if no one else is listening...it always give me inspiration.

I spent some time today reading through all of the pages on this thread.  Some postings brought tears to my eyes; others made my spirit soar; some did both at the same time.  All touched me in some way.  Thank you, my dear friends, for sharing with me.  I know I can always come here when I need some peace, or just need a place to rest for a while.
