Title: From the heart
Post by: gardengirl1 on August 30, 2013, 10:08:19 AM
Have you ever been so overwhelmed at the wonder and beauty of something in nature that you were speechless? So overcome with emotion, a heart so full and eyes flowing with tears because of something  you saw, heard, tasted, or touched in creation? That has happened to me so often, and when I first happened upon the live camera on an eagle's nest in Decorah Ia it certainly was the case. Magnificent.Awe-inspiring.Noble.Breath-taking.Unbelievable.  At such times I have found that other talented folks HAVE found a way to convey those emotions that I cannot.  Poetry.This thread will be a place for anyone to share their favorite poetic expressions relating to nature. I hope you find some inspiration here, some peaceful and quiet moments.

I will start with my favorite hymn.

                                        This is My Father's World

This is my Father's world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas-His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise
The morning light, the lily white,declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world:He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father's world: the battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav'n be one.

I have felt that many times, gardengirl, and that is exactly what kept me watching the cam on April 3, 2011. Your hymn selection is also one of my very favorite! Don't know how often I'll get here, but I love your idea for this thread.  Thank you.

Wow...wow...wow...wow, gardengirl is all I can say! or maybe OMG.  Yeah.  OMG.  Sigh.  What absolutely beautiful poems you are sharing with us and what a beautiful, peaceful thread this is.  You know, last year, on my 1st trip to Decorah, I had many of your moments of which you speak of, of being overwhelmed, speechless, overcome with emotion, tears swelling up in my eyes... humbleness as I was alone at one point with the horses and a juvenile who was perched in a tree by the horse field off of Sievers Springs Road bridge.  I will never forget that moment as I felt touched by God, as He gave me a private gift of being with those wonderful creatures in that special place.  It's like time had stopped for a few moments.

I don't have any poems with me as I'm at work, but I do want to share with you all some lines from a poem from my childhood.  I only remember these few lines.  I know not to this day the rest of the poem or the title or the author, but these lines have stayed forever imbedded in my memory and always mean peace and tranquility to me:

"Apple blossoms when they go, white and slow,
Quiet all the orchard space, till the place,
Hushed with falling sweetness seems,
Filled with Dreams."

Thank you so much for starting this thread.  I will have to look for some of my favorite poetry.  Here is one from a song that our high school choir used to sing, many years ago.  It has always been one of my favorites.  I can't help but think of the words whenever I am walking in the woods.

I know a green cathedral

By Gordon Johnstone

I know a green cathedral, a shadowed forest shrine
Where leaves in love join hands above to arch your prayer and mine.

Within its cool depths sacred, the priestly cedar sighs,
And the fir and pine lift arms divine unto the pure blue skies.

In my dear green cathedral there is a flowered seat,
And choir loft in branched croft where songs of bird hymns meet.

And I like to dream at evening, when the star its arches light,
That my Lord and God treads its hallowed sod in the cool, calm peace of night.

One of my favorites - High Flight by John Magee

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, --and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of --Wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew --
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

As I read this, I "could" imagine that most of this is about an eagle telling their story as they fly and soar and glide.

THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Written by Wendell Berry

GG, this is an awesome thread!  Thanks so much for starting it.  And thank you for posting the above poem.  This one really touched my heart.  I will come here often looking for inspiration and comfort.

I saw this Walt Whitman poem just recently, and it's really nice.

The Dalliance of Eagles

Walt Whitman

Skirting the river road, (my forenoon walk, my rest,)
Skyward in air a sudden muffled sound, the dalliance of the eagles,
The rushing amorous contact high in space together,
The clinching interlocking claws, a living, fierce, gyrating wheel,
Four beating wings, two beaks, a swirling mass tight grappling,
In tumbling turning clustering loops, straight downward falling,
Till o'er the river pois'd, the twain yet one, a moment's lull,
A motionless still balance in the air, then parting, talons loosing,
Upward again on slow-firm pinions slanting, their separate diverse flight,
She hers, he his, pursuing.

And let's not forget the Peregrine Falcon:

A Peregrine Falcon

by Emile Pinet

A peregrine falcon dominates the sky,
wings majestically arched with flair,
soaring alongside the elements eye to eye.

In a flurry of speed it flashes by
serenely aloof, both untethered and rare,
a peregrine falcon dominates the sky.

Sunlight gilds feathers as soft as a sigh,
and flickering flecks ignite in the air,
soaring alongside the elements eye to eye.

Being both naturally nimble and spry,
while inspiring audacity and dare,
a peregrine falcon dominates the sky.

Riding an invisible thermal high,
its spirit swoops me up and I am there,
soaring alongside the elements eye to eye.

Like poetry in motion wingtips fly
and awed by its beauty I can but stare,
soaring alongside the elements eye to eye,
a peregrine falcon dominates the sky.

Love, love this one:

The Eagle

BY ALFRED LORD TENNYSON

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

Glo, my husband is a pilot and has High Flight plaque in his office.  Beautiful sentiment!!

walton, the eagle and peregrine poems made me feel like I was soaring on a thermal with them. I could almost hear  the clash of talons as they interlocked and feel the rush of their wings sweeping past me. What a vivid depiction!! Gives me shivers.

Walton, gg - I had the same feeling and visions in my mind as I read the poems too.  Thanks, Walton.

jicaji - neat on your husband!  Thanks for sharing that with us.

You know...poetry doesn't necessarily have to be in the form of verse.  Songs are really poetry sometimes as they may have rhyming lyrics.  I tried finding just the right song and still may, but instead, because of the peacefulness of this thread, I found another instrumental song and hope you don't mind me posting a video.  It's a video with a nice, relaxing tune and some nature thrown in, so I hope you enjoy it:

Good morning Finn and everyone.  Borland's poem is beautiful! I love how he writes and what he says. I finally got Book of Days this past Christmas because you mentioned it and quoted it, back in 2011, I think.  My goodness that man had knowledge of everything, it seems. I have loved reading it every single day since January 1 and will be sad when the year of reading is over.  I treat myself to it every night and often have to use lots of self control to not read ahead!  I may have to get one of his other books, or reread this one! Any recommendations.

Wow - I came here now to find some peace in the middle of my day and you all have certainly provided it.  Thank you.

GG, Finn - Beautiful poems in the Eagle Feather Fan, Hal Borland's Book of Days and the reflection of a Father and Son.

Finn- thanks for the Hal Borland article giving us other references of his books.  I have the Book of Days sitting on the floor next to my bed, not giving it justice though, on a daily basis like Nan.  What am I waiting for?  Books are such treasures, providing information to feed our brains and wonderful items like poems to feed our hearts.

Oh, thank you for the Robert Frost!  We have been lucky enough to twice visit the Frost home in Shaftsbury, Vermont.  One of the poems posted there is this one, which Robert Frost is said to have composed after the death of his wife.  It always gets me...

Traces

by Robert Frost

These woods have been loved in and wept in.
It's not supposed to be known
That of two who came here loving
But one comes weeping alone.

Nan:  just about anything Borland wrote works for me--I'm a big fan.  But one of my favorites is Twelve Moons of the Year.  I'm attaching a list of all his works so you can browse away--you can often find his books at used book stores or there seem to be some inexpensive copies available on line:  http://naturewriting.com/hal.htm

Thinking Happiness

Think of the things that make you happy,
Not the things that make you sad;
Think of the fine and true in mankind,
Not its sordid side and bad;
Think of the blessings that surround you,
Not the ones that are denied;
Think of the virtues of your friendships,
Not the weak and faulty side;

Think of the gains you've made in business,
Not the losses you've incurred;
Think of the good of you that's spoken,
Not some cruel, hostile word;

Think of the days of health and pleasure,
Not the days of woe and pain;
Think of the days alive with sunshine,
Not the dismal days of rain;

Think of the hopes that lie before you,
Not the waste that lies behind;
Think of the treasures you have gathered,
Not the ones you've failed to find;
Think of the service you may render,
Not of serving self alone;
Think of the happiness of others,
And in this you'll find your own!

Oh, Finn, I just read that entry yesterday... just beautiful, and I thought about posting it too, but ran out of time.  Bear with me as I post another (oh, there could be so many, love his writing and thinking) To me, Hal Borland is writer, poet, philosopher, scientist. His writings are a jewel I treasure every night.  Hope you all enjoy this entry, as well.:

"The autumn days shorten, but even as they shorten they increase in height and breadth.  It is as though there were a constant ratio that keeps the days in balance.  If it seems strange to think of any day in such dimensions, I have only to look about me, now that the leaves have thinned out.  My eyes can reach.  New vistas are open.  The horizon is there just beyond the row of maples from which the morning breeze shook a shower of gold and scarlet.  The sun slants in the window where, only two weeks ago, the shadow of the elms lay deep.

The hills are no longer remote, and at night I can look up and see the constellations of Andromeda and Pegasus.  Even in a land of trees, we no longer are canopied from the sky and walled in from the horizon.  Our earth's distances invite the eye.  And as the eyes reach, so must the mind stretch to meet those new horizons.

True, they are not new horizons.  I have seen them in long succession of other autumns, and they have been there through all the winters I have known here.  But the fact that they now seem new, if only because newly seen, is human reason enough for the seasonal succession.  We bind our lives with too many walls and canopies, at best.  It is good to have those barriers thin away, from time to time, and reveal the broader scope.  It is good to be reminded that not only the day but life itself is a matter of more than one dimension.

Autumn is the eternal corrective.  It is ripeness and color and a time of maturity; but it is also breadth, and depth, and distance.  What man can stand with autumn on a hilltop and fail to see the span of his world and the meaning of the rolling hills that reach the the far horizon?"

You know, some of us have been fortunate to have visited Decorah and we have been able to experience the quiet mornings as day breaks.  Dawn, on a summer day in Decorah, is so special because on most days, you share it with Mom and/or Dad Decorah by the first maple tree (on the right) at the Hatchery entrance.  We actually sang this song in Church today so I did a little googling.  I have always loved this song too.  I found a nice version of it (you'll see why) so I hope you enjoy it!

GG:  This is a beautiful reflection on wind, autumn and the sounds of geese as they make their way across the landscape.  Thank you for passing it along to all of us!

GG, Ditto to what Finn said.  I, too, when I hear geese...first hear that honking in the distance.  I know they're near but can't see them right away and then louder and louder and louder until YES - there they are...flying overhead in their "V" shape...honks now scattered like a chorus, jumping in at different times in a song, and then fading...fading...fading.  Beautiful!

Walton - TY for that link for the documentary on Aldo Leopold.

Sally - my sincere condolences also and glad that poem was a comfort to you.

I want to share something tonight with you all from my heart.  This song/video came to my mind a short while ago and I decided to come here, to this thread.  I came across this video last year, not too long after my 1st trip to Decorah last June.   It's a video created by students from Luther College in Decorah and shows what Decorah means to them.  There are some wonderful landmarks like Whippy Dip, Mabe's Pizza, beautiful Decorah landscapes, waterfalls, Downtown, and some memories for these students of college life.  It's called, "Hey There, Decorah" sung to the tune of "Hey There, Delilah".  Well, as most of you know, us eagleholics have a special affinity to Decorah, don't we? ;)  I was so blessed to have made last year's trip (and this year's too) to Decorah, Iowa.  It all started with 2 eagles in a nest and then there were 5.  Ha!  And I never looked back again.  Each year now just deepens my love for this special place with these special eagles.  Just like the Delilah song, I can now sing...."Oh it's what you do to me...Oh, it's what you do to me...what you do to me....."

Just beautiful, Faith.  Thank you so much.

And Bless Bob Welsh for being a man who really seemed to care.  He did his part for every heart that came his way, and shared.

Now...I found this simple poem:

The Christmas Tree

In the cathedral of a forest
stood the tree, unadorned, serene -
with fragrant balsam branches outstretched
in welcome to her snow-powdered green.

Birds came to carol from her proud crown;
deer and hare played and slept at her feet;
from the velvet sky a star shown down
from the East, to make the scene complete.

When I am thinking about and missing those that have gone before me, I always think of this poem which was sent to me when my mother passed away 17 years ago a week before Christmas.

I Am Spending Christmas With Jesus Christ This Year!!

I see the countless Christmas Trees
Around the world below
With tiny lights
Like heaven's stars
Reflecting on the snow
The sight is so spectacular

Please wipe away that tear
For I am spending Christmas
With Jesus Christ this year
I hear the many Christmas songs
That people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare
With the Christmas choir up here
I have no words to tell you
The joy their voices bring
For it is beyond description
To hear the angels sing

I know how much you miss me
I see the pain inside your heart
But I am not so far away
We really aren't apart
So be happy for me dear ones
You know I hold you dear
And be glad I'm spending Christmas
With Jesus Christ this year
I send you each a special gift
From my heavenly home above
I send you each a memory of
My undying love
After all love is the gift
More precious than pure gold
It was always most important
In the stories Jesus told
Please love and keep each other
As my Father said to do
For I can't count the blessing
Or love he has for each of you

So have a Merry Christmas
And wipe away that tear
Remember I am spending Christmas
With Jesus Christ this year.

Listen to the Birds

Gentle falling snowflakes quiet the forest
As the moon shines brightly ever before us.
Hushed in silence as in our dreams
The presence of nature is very keen.
A rustle in the trees, a distant owl's call
Reminds us of the beauty as the snow continues to fall.

We only need to listen and hear their spoken words
"Tis night and we are present, listen to the birds."
Their joyful songs bring music to every living soul
Who cares enough to listen in the hushed snowfall.
The beauty of the night goes beyond our human senses
Praise God for all creation as their love for us commences.

My Dad and I attended a funeral today for my mom's second cousin.  She was 94. She was quite an accomplished woman for her time, or any time for that matter.  She was Ph.D. professor in nursing but dabbled in loads of other things. She was a caring and compassionate person showing love to the people and animals in need, and held a deep appreciation of nature. Poetry was one of her passions.  Her last published book was in 2007 when she was 88 years old! One of her pieces, January Miracles, was printed on the back of the bulletin. I thought it was lovely and wanted to post it.  Maybe it will brighten a January day for someone here.

January Miracles
As I prune my trees each winter, I love to bring into the library some barren branches from my frozen garden.  The stems are pounded, placed into warm water and soon brilliant yellow forsythia and soft pink and white fruit tree blossoms splash into view.

As I reflect upon this wondrous miracle of life which defies the barren coldness outside my window, I'm reminded that I should put on my spiritual overcoat and check my ego carefully for aspects needing rejuvenation.  I would do well to trim away all withered thoughts of disbelief and doubting ? examine the scraggly bush of fear and anxiety by refurbishing my faith.  If apparently dead, I should cut into the boughs of prayer and immediately add faint green hope to the prayer chain.  I should prune insecurity from the evergreens; add appreciation, joy, and forgiveness to give depth to the mass arrangement.

By tending each area of spiritual consciousness carefully, I can bring larger, stronger branches into my spiritual kitchen.  I can repair each bouquet with prayer and release and place deeply into the vase of restoring waters of God's love.  Then I can relax and trust, watch for unique qualities and answers which will soon unfold, then burst into bloom.  I can then display the blossoms proudly and share generously to spice up tired January souls.

I've always liked this poem.

God the Artist by Angela Morgan

God, when you thought of a pine tree,
How did you think of a star?
How did you dream of the Milky Way
To guide us from afar.
How did you think of a clean brown pool
Where flecks of shadows are?

God, when you thought of a cobweb,
How did you think of dew?
How did you know a spider's house
Had shingles bright and new?
How did you know the human folk
Would love them like they do?

God, when you patterned a bird song,
Flung on a silver string,
How did you know the ecstasy
That crystal call would bring?
How did you think of a bubbling throat
And a darling speckled wing?

God, when you chiseled a raindrop,
How did you think of a stem,
Bearing a lovely satin leaf
To hold the tiny gem?
How did you know a million drops
Would deck the morning's hem?

Why did you mate the moonlit night
With the honeysuckle vines?
How did you know Madeira bloom
Distilled ecstatic wines?
How did you weave the velvet disk
Where tangled perfumes are?
God, when you thought of a pine tree,
How did you think of a star?

Here's some beautiful little thoughts that hang in my bedroom:

"I do not wish you joy without a sorrow,
nor endless day without the healing dark,
nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow,
nor tides that never turn against your bark.

I wish you Love and Strength,
and Faith, and Wisdom, Goods
Gold enough to help some needy one.

I wish you Songs,
But also blessed Silence
and God's sweet Peace
when every day is done."

Figure this is the place for this.
I like to read the chat and take advantage of the fish our fantastic Mods give us.  And I like to make snarky, hopefully humorous remarks when the opportunity arises!  But I'd easily give it up to just go full screen all the time and commune with the eagles!  So....in my world....perchin' is just fine.  But I do enjoy the JOY of chat and our wonderful moderators!
But chat has really been "noisy" lately, full of newbies asking the same questions day after day, and the trolls trying to rile the tranquility of Decorah by talking about totally unrelated events and nests and weather or doom and gloom for the hatch.
Well, the analogy might be chauvinistic, but it gets to sounding like a dang hen-house.  Something could happen on the nest and the drone continues....few on chat notice anything.  And the Mods are so busy answering dumb questions and finding fish, I'm amazed at their endurance.
So, if you're a newbie, remember silence is golden and one learns most by reading and listening!
And if you're a troll, I'll repeat what I said last night at the end of chat.  Most appropriate on the St. Patrick's Day!!
             Have a nice St. Pat's, trolls!  May you be eaten by leprechauns!!

While we understand the frustration repeated questions can cause to long time watchers and chatters, we do welcome the questions from new watchers and chatters as well.  It does our hearts good to see the interest in nature sparked where there may have been none before.  We have to remember that we were all new to this at one time in our lives.  It is a good thing to share knowledge and welcome others to the wonderful world of Bald Eagles.  Some of the best questions from new watchers have prompted us to research and learn more.  With ongoing research, there is no end to what we can all learn.  We hope that experienced chatters will also find joy in sharing their knowledge with those that are just beginning.

GG: thank you for this passage from Hal Borland.  We are full of new beginnings and we feel the "deep wonder" he talks about as each day passes.

GG - the words from Hal Borland's book are beautiful.  Thanks for posting them.

Finn - We certainly are full of new beginnings and "Yes!"...we feel the "deep wonder" as these last few days have passed and we have watched D18, D19, and D20 come into our lives.  Three miracles, I say.

I came here today to share with you a quote I read this morning in the October 2010 issue of "Birds and Blooms" magazine and I'm glad I came as it has been a little while since I last visited this wonderful thread.  The quote makes sense and it goes like this:

"A wise old owl sat in an oak.  The more he saw, the less he spoke.  The less he spoke, the more he heard.  Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?"

 ~ old proverb.

Welcome, Serendipity, to our forum and "thank you" for your beautiful words about trees.  Yes, some do just "hang on" to their leaves, not quite ready to relinquish their life and beauty.

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.  I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach."  Thank you, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.  Your words describe how I feel about Decorah and our eagles. Gardengirl started this wonderful thread, "From the Heart", so here I am to speak from MY heart.

I've just experienced another wonderful week in Decorah, Iowa.  It's my 3rd year now to get the chance to see and hear and feel the wonderment and magic of it all.  To start my days in the quiet of dawn with Mom & Dad Decorah, to watching them fly and glide and soar ever so gracefully in the sky is a feeling I never forget. The thrill of seeing one of their offspring, FOUR, was just as exciting.  New life started again for an eagle.

I met many warm, friendly people over the past week and eagleholics to boot. :)  We all share in the love we have for these eagles and that's what makes this connection so special.  The atmosphere at the hatchery is one of quiet enjoyment.  Smiles and hearts abound everywhere.  Our lives and the eagles lives are tightly intertwined like the nests we see at N1 and N2.  Everything from the horses to deer to birds to wildflowers.....all these things add to our experience.  Throw in some fantastic events...some learning events...some awe-inspiring events..and you have a fun-filled weekend. To be able to see Thora, S.O.A.R's educational Bald Eagle "up close and personal" at Luther College was really something else.  To hear Thora was equally amazing or to hear our Mom & Dad talk to each other.  Wow!

Sometimes I was the first one to arrive at the hatchery.  One evening I was the last one to leave.  I always felt a sense of belonging there at this fish hatchery in Decorah, Iowa.  I felt peace and contentment.  I felt blessed by this moment in time.  I hope anyone reading this gets a chance to go and experience the "magic" that is there.  You'll know when you do.  ;)

I think it's time for this:

When the Frost is on the Punkin

By James Whitcomb Riley

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin' turkey-cock,
And the clackin' of the guineys, and the cluckin' of the hens,
And the rooster's hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, it's then's the times a feller is a-feelin' at his best,
With the risin' sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

They's something kindo' harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here-
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin'-birds and buzzin' of the bees;
But the air's so appetizin'; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur' that no painter has the colorin' to mock-
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin' of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries-kindo' lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin' sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below-the clover over-head!-
O, it sets my hart a-clickin' like the tickin' of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin' 's over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! ...
I don't know how to tell it-but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin' boardin', and they'd call around on me-
I'd want to 'commodate 'em-all the whole-indurin' flock-
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock!

Thank you Walton for reminding me of the REAL meaning of Christmas. The Hallelujah Chorus gives me goose bumps every single time...

Today we attended the funeral of a good friend. The final song of the service was The Hallelujah Chorus. sigh.

Oh, what a lovely idea for a funeral!  I love the Messiah, and I play it all year long.  I even sing along, if no one else is listening...it always give me inspiration.

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

~ Robert Frost

"I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."

thank you gardengirl. The quotes of Lewis Carroll remind me of something a doctor once told me while at work.  He had 12 children, all very smart. We had 2 boys: 12 and 13. He said
"frehaws, just remember the child who leaves the home in the morning for school, is not the same one who returns home after school".
I never forgot this. I reminded our oldest now that he has a 16 year old and it almost applies to our 8 yr old grandson too.

                                                                                      To a Sparrow

written by Reginald Holmes

When God made all the feathered things,
To some, He gave bright, crimson wings;
And others wore a cloak of blue,
While some were clad in golden hue.
I think, perhaps God never guessed
So many sparrows must be dressed;
And He used all the bright arrays
For clothing cardinals and jays.

The sparrows do not seem to mind
The drab, dull raiment of their kind.
When snow is deep and days are cold,
I hear them twitter, chirp and scold;
But with my human reasoning,
I wonder why they cannot sing;
Why all the lovely lilting notes
Were placed in other gifted throats.

They're such a pleasant sight to see
When perched upon our leafless tree.
I must admit...for it is true,
That we have much in common, too.
I dress about the same as they
In sober shades of brown and gray.
No melody have I to bring,
I, too, have never learned to sing.

I'm sure they have as great a worth
As other feathered friends on earth;
For in the greatest Book of all
I'm told God notes the sparrow's fall.
At least, this lesson I have learned...
That common things must not be spurned.
One needs no song, no glorious dress
To share God's love and blessedness.
OH MY!  Newbie to this thread as well.  GG I am in tears as I sit reading this poem and watch our sparrows surviving in the current winter blast Mother Nature has decided to put upon wildlife in NEO.
Thank you and I too will come here often.   :-*

Glogdog-actually the doctor meant that childrens' personalities change on a dime and the sweet one that leaves in the am is not always the sweet one that returns.
And yes, teachers do have a great impact on their students.

After reading all "my threads" here in the Forum, after taking a break from my friends in chat, I come here with glistening cheeks and tear-filled eyes to say how much joy I receive from knowing you and having this experience!  It strengthens my sorrow I feel for Four, but shows me I'm not alone, and we're all stronger for being together!
 All this after spending yesterday at the Prairie Heritage Center for Eagle Days, meeting gardengirl, and seeing a SOAR program with an eagle I think was named Thor, although I could be wrong as I was in the back of the room and eventually gave up my space to new-comers and missed most of it.  But gg was up front, and I'm hoping she'll relate some of her experiences.
Anyways....I'll post some pics in the lounge that I took there, and tell a little more of my experience in Cheers, later!
RIP Four...Bob's problem child...and to me-Big Foot and D20.

I went to a "Celebration of Life" yesterday for a dear friend and family member. Under her picture was printed this. I spent much of my time there thinking of Four and hope this is appropriate to share here.

You could shed tears that I am gone, or you can smile because I had lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that I will come back, or you can open your eyes and see all that I have left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see me, or you can be full of the love we shared.

You can remember me and only that I'm gone, or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what I'd love; open your eyes, love and go on.

I'm not gone...just gone ahead.

I am still hurting from the loss of Four.  Bob A's "problem child" Four was the only Decorah fledgling to my knowledge who slept at Bob's home and dined at his mews.  The saddest yet most comforting thing to me has been the picture of Bob rescuing and taking Four home this one last time.

Your words and poems have been a huge comfort, too.

Thank you from my heart, friends and companions at the nest.

An Old Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Good morning. I thought I would try for my first post here. So here goes.

                                                                                  A Reason to Believe

                                                                               Its beyond the pad and pen,
                                                                               And bigger than what I'd say.
                                                                              Really, I could only say, Amen,
                                                                               To describe how I feel today.

                                                                                  So I'll speak, so let it be
                                                                            Because you're dearest in my heart.
                                                                           My hands have not come up empty,
                                                                                Nor have I worn another scar.

                                                                               With you came a new purpose.
                                                                               An after-life beyond its death
                                                                                No longer do I feel worthless;
                                                                         I have a reason to breathe another breath.

gardengirl, what a beautiful poem. I imagine it holds much love and longing to almost all children. It is very lovely.

To those few, like me, who grew up with a mother that was not so kind and loving, it gives us pause to hope and pray that we do become the mother the poem honors. I believe that I have done that and my heart is so full of the love I get back that I am very happy at my life and full of love for my family.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you out here that are mothers or have mothers or had wonderful mothers.

thank you gardengirl. I have heard this story before and forgotten it. I think it is imperitive that I etch it into my memory for reference in the world we live in now.

I love Helen Steiner Rice cards so I thought I would share this poem with all of you tonight. If it has been share here before, I apologize.

                       A PRICELESS GIFT

Friendship is a priceless gift
than cannot be bought or sold,
but its value is far greater
than a mountain made of gold.

For gold is cold and lifeless
it can neither see nor hear
and in the time of trouble
it is powerless to cheer.

It has no ears to listen
nor heart to understand
it cannot bring you comfort
or reach out a helping hand.

So when you ask God for a gift
be thankful if he sends
not diamonds, pearls, or riches
but the love of real true friends.

While driving to my son's house a few days ago, a trip of about two hours, I was playing through the songs on my IPod.  This song, sung by Nanci Griffith, came up and I remembered how much I liked the words.  They are so meaningful.

From a Distance

(By Julie Gold)

From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow-capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the voice of hope, it's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man

From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
There are no guns, no bombs, no disease
No hungry mouths to feed

From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace
They're the songs of every man
God is watching us, God is watching us
God is watching us from a distance

From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I can't comprehend
What all this war is for

From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man

Turn again to life

By Mary Lee Hall

If I should die and leave you here a while,
be not like others sore undone,
who keep long vigil by the silent dust.
For my sake turn again to life and smile,
nerving thy heart and trembling hand
to do something to comfort other hearts than mine.
Complete these dear unfinished tasks of mine
and I perchance may therein comfort you.

Glad you posted this song here.  I saw it yesterday when Dobe posted it in Cheers.  It's wonderful to watch and hear all the kids singing it in that video!  I noticed, apparently, they are at a summer camp.  Wow.  It's just wonderful.  Bob would have loved it.  Maybe he did see that video along the way - it was from 2009, I think.

Thanks, GG!

I know I ma probably repeating these words, please allow me to write them.

but those who hope in the LORD
      will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles,
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

   Isiah 40.31NIV

In time may your heart be consoled, your courage renewed and your hope restored.

We all share in this loss.

Eagles of Inspiration
by Jim Weller

A single eagle atop a tree
speaks of many things to me.
I see a sentinel brave and strong
perched up high where he belongs.
Diligent throughout the day
aware of all that comes his way,
with eyes alert, he views the skies
for any threat that might pass by.

A pair of eagles in a tree
speaks of other truths to me.
I see a bond that none may shake
and only death itself dare break!
Devoted to each other so,
yet year by year devotion grows,
through every trial that they share
in togetherness and mutual care.

But a pair of eagles on the wing
makes my heart both laugh and sing!
Together, high up in the air,
they soar along without a care.
In unfettered freedom by and by
they dance their way across the sky
until, at last, as I strain to see,
they're absorbed into its azure sea.

What a blessing to behold
this sight more valuable than gold,
this sight that sets my spirit free
to be what I was meant to be!
It snaps harsh tethers of earthly care
and sends me high into the air!

We're designed by God to be so much more,
with hearts to watch, and love, and soar!

Time to post one of my favorites:

The golden-rod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.

The gentian's bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.

The sedges flaunt their harvest,
In every meadow nook;
And asters by the brook-side
Make asters in the brook,

From dewy lanes at morning
The grapes' sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.

By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer.

But none of all this beauty
Which floods the earth and air
Is unto me the secret
Which makes September fair.

'T is a thing which I remember;
To name it thrills me yet:
One day of one September
I never can forget.

Walton - your poem is perfect to hail in the beginning of Fall.  My favorite season -"autumn's best of cheer."

Saturday I had the most awesome experience at a Women of the Outdoors event ---tagging Monarch butterflies.  We were a sight to behold--women aging from high school sophomore to senior citizen, frolicking through wildflowers with giant nets to capture Monarch beauties, gender ID them, and place teeny eeny stickers on a certain spot on their wings, give them a kiss and lift them to the sky with an Adios Amigos...

If you ever have this opportunity, don't pass it by.

Monarch Butterfly

GG that must have been a wonderful experience.

Wait I can wait

     For the fullness of wings

     For the lift     For the flight

Wait I can wait

     A moment less

     A moment more

I have waited much longer before

     For the taste of the flower

For the feel     For the sight

Wait I can wait

     For the prize of the skies

     For the gift of the air

Almost finished

Almost there

     Almost ready

                    to rise

So the problem is....Dad's the nest site locator.  And even tho' Mom is all for accepting the nice nest (N2B) the people started, Dad has a certain masonic pride in being "the builder".
 Now, I think if everyone just puts out lots of good vibes whenever Dad is in the nest, and if you're lucky enough to be present at the hatchery, doing the same there, we can get him over the hump, he'll swallow his masculine pride, and he'll go about remodeling N2B into "the best nest ever"!!!!....at least until another one's necessary. :D
Just a thought.

Best song by the Beach Boys, gg!!  Suppose you were too young, but the Beach Boys were the first band I saw at the Roof Garden in Arnolds Park in the summer of 1964.  They were still a "surfer" band then, but still put on a great show.  Brian was on bass even.  I'm thinking "Good Vibrations" might have come out during the Summer of Love, 1967, but I'm only guessing.  Might have to google search....or listen again to your link and see if it's listed anywhere. :)

Winter Worship

In wintertime,
I like to follow
Soft snow-dust trails
Through woods and hollow
Where summer vines, still fruited, cling,
And dogwood trees have buds for spring.

Within God's wondrous world of white,
He keeps each season's promise bright,
Not forgetting autumn gold
In leaves the sycamores still hold.

The woods are like a temple there
With songs of birds ,a pine tree's prayer
Upon an altar of white snow.
His miracles, like candles , glow;
A quiet place where I find peace
And faith, in love that shall not cease.

Ground Hog Day, and the snow is slowly piling up on N2B and I'm listening to IPR and getting an eco-green feeling, and I was thunderstruck :D by the idea of seeing Frozen Water piling up on the Carbon Sequestration represented by the many branches with which our noble birds build their nest.
And I'm also mulling the results of last night, and as a native-born Iowan and a member of the majority party of the state (Independent-40%) and unable to participate in the Caucus without declaring a party affiliation of either Democrat or Republican, I'm amused by the media deciding whether Iowa's winners are losers and losers are winners.
The season of 2016 is going to be great with the new nest, the new cams, the new crew, and the old mission statement from The Lead Dude....
to preserve and strengthen raptor populations, ....expand participation in raptor preservation, and ....foster the next generation of preservationists.  Thank you Bob!

In the spring of 1974 I was in a college rock band that had the distinct honor of being the "front band" for Earth, Wind, and Fire, a band out of Chicago on their way to Los Angeles and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, a late Friday night TV show that led to their international fame.  I hadn't heard much of their music at the time, but I certainly became a fan after I saw them.  As local boys, our band thought we'd blow the audience away, but they seemed more knowledgeable, and held their praise for the headliners, and after about two minutes into the Earth, Wind, and Fire set, I understood why.
RIP Maurice White.
Footnote: In 1979 I was in LA visiting my girlfriend, and Maurice lived across the hall in her apartment complex in North Hollywood.  Small world, isn't it?

While watching TV this morning, I heard Wendell Berry reading one of his poems.  What wonderful thoughts!  Here it is:

The Peace of Wild Things

By Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children?s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

I wanted so badly to post this before the Philippine Eagle Benefit last month, but I could not get in to the forum for some reason.  It's working now though, and anytime is a good time to support this wonderful cause, so I'd like to post something Amy posted for us in chat last year.  It is a quote from Bob himself about endangered species, and it is definitely "from the heart"....

Bob used to quote this regarding endangered birds:

 The beauty and genius of a work of art may be reconceived, though its first material expression be destroyed; a vanished harmony may yet again inspire the composer; but when the last individual of a race of living beings breathes no more, another heaven and another earth must pass before such a one can be again. We saved the Bald Eagle. We saved the Peregrine Falcon.

Conservation issues in the Philippines seem even more complicated than they are here. The PEF is taking a multi-faceted approach to help people who are living in extreme poverty understand why leaving trees and habitat is more important than taking them down.
Connecting people to wildlife was something Bob believed in deeply, and we all believe in it too!

So if you can, please donate, or simply do an act of kindness in Bob or RRP's name.  Even a smile to a stranger can make someone's life a little better.  Thanks for hanging in there with me y'all...

your humble servant,

Izzy :-*

We had a chatter that made the following post this season and I wanted to share it.  It is quite the poem!

Cottonwood Trees

I don't know the author of this beautiful short poem about the tree holding the Decorah Eagles. Here it is...

I think the tree is pleased to be used to cradle eaglets.
It must summon the breeze to rock them to sleep and urge its leaves to sprout for shade.
Music it sings soft at night to sooth the dreaming kings and queens it shelters.
Strong and silent it holds them near, radiating its joy and pleasure.

GG, thanks for the interesting story of the history of Taps.  I love Taps... My father had a cornet when I was very little, and I loved it when he would sometimes play Taps on it.  Taps was played every evening at the summer camp I went to in the NC mountains during some of my elementary school years, and sometimes, as campers there, we would take a short hike to a pretty spot for Vespers and would always sing Taps there, too.  It's such a simple, serene, and beautiful melody and song.

Bob1603, that's a wonderful poem about Cottonwood Trees!  Thank you for sharing it here...  Was the chatter the author?  Or was it the chatter who said the author is unknown?  It's really nice!

In my way, I went to try to research who wrote that poem about cottonwoods, and stumbled upon this... the poetry of James Hearst, a farmer's son from Iowa, and friend of Robert Frost, and so much more.  I read through the Table of Contents, the Introduction about James Hearst, and the Editor's Preface.  Oh my - what a story!  A big, new discovery for me...  I've read a few of the poems just now, and see I will be busy with more of this!
It's in pdf form at:
http://www.cedarfalls.com/DocumentCenter/Home/View/978  - The Complete Poetry of James Hearst, published by University of Iowa Press, Iowa City
(There is a completely different kind of poem about a cottonwood tree on page 459 of that pdf file - also listed as page 497 of 562 - LOL - titled, "What Matters.")

Baz, to answer your question, the chatter did not mention any author and had no knowledge who wrote it.  I just have hunch that it was one of our Decorah chatters - not sure why I think that but the poem just seems to fit the Decorah cottonwoods.  And thank you for your discovery of James Hearst and his poems.  Research and learning can be so much fun!

gg - thanks for Bob's tribute.  Love the comparison of him to a stone causing ripples.  So true.   I also enjoyed The Eagle and Great Possessions.  That one got loud.  ;)

Bob -  that's a neat little poem about the Cottonwood trees.  Thanks for sharing it.

gg - love all of your Autumn/November, winter-like poems.  Thanks for sharing them with us.

I couldn't help but think of this poem tonight by Robert Frost, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening".  I almost want to say, "Stopping by Nest on a Snowy Evening".  :)  The snowfall on the nest right now is beautiful.  So here is Robert Frost's poem and a screen capture of N2B:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
BY ROBERT FROST

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Still one of my favorite winter poems:

I Heard a Bird Sing
 by Oliver Herford

I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

"We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,"
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.

How lovely, walton, and it is so good to see you. The room has been kind of empty recently. Maybe we can open the door wide, light the candles, trim the tree, and make some cider. There is always a fire going. I am gathering chairs right now.

Feed the Birds

While you sit by your fireside,
Secure and snug and warm,
The little feathered songsters
Are battled by the storm.

They huddle in the pine trees,
By winter's tempest chilled;
Their welcome songs are silent,
Their golden notes are stilled.

Locked beneath a coat of ice,
The ground on which they feed,
Our little friends will perish
Unless we we supply their need.

Then let us feed the songsters
Throughout the bitter cold...
In summer they'll repay us
A thousand, thousand fold.

Before I melt,
Come look at me!
This lovely icy filigree!
Of a great forest
In one night
I make a wilderness
Of white;
By skyey cold
Of crystals made.
All softly, on
Your finger laid.
I pause that you
My beauty see;
Breathe, and I vanish
Instantly.

                                                                                     Winter Worship

In wintertime,
I like to follow
Soft snow-dust trails
Through woods and hollow
Where summer vines, still fruited, cling,
And dogwood trees have buds for spring.

Within God's wondrous world of white,
He keeps each season's promise bright,
Not forgetting autumn gold
In leaves the sycamores still hold.

The woods are like a temple there
With songs of birds, a pine tree's prayer
Upon an altar of white snow.
His miracles, like candles, glow;
A quiet place where I find peace
And faith, in love that shall not cease.

Time for another Robert Frost poem:

Looking For a Sunset Bird in Winter by Robert Frost

The west was getting out of gold,
The breath of air had died of cold,
When shoeing home across the white,
I thought I saw a bird alight.

In summer when I passed the place
I had to stop and lift my face;
A bird with an angelic gift
Was singing in it sweet and swift.

No bird was singing in it now.
A single leaf was on a bough,
And that was all there was to see
In going twice around the tree.

From my advantage on a hill
I judged that such a crystal chill
Was only adding frost to snow
As gilt to gold that wouldn't show.

A brush had left a crooked stroke
Of what was either cloud or smoke
From north to south across the blue;
A piercing little star was through.

                                                                                                       Home for Christmas

May your heart be home for Christmas,
   Home where its belongings are;
Home with lights in every window,
   And the welcome-gate ajar.

Home with cherished memories dusted,
   Silver dreams all polished bright,
Bells of hope hung high for ringing,
   And faith shining in the night.

Home with laughter bubbling over
   And with kindness spread to share;
Sweet surprises in gay wrappings,
   And contentment purring there.

Home with love as its companion,
   Warm together by the fire.
May your heart be home for Christmas--
To receive your heart's desire.

                                                                                      New Friends, Old Friends

New friends I cherish and treasure their worth,
But old friends to me are the salt of the earth.
Friends are like garments that everyone wears,
New ones are needed for dress-up affairs,
But when we're at leisure, we're more apt to choose
The clothes that we purchased with last season's shoes.

Things we grow used to are things we love best,
The ones we are certain have weathered the test.
And isn't it true, since we're talking of friends,
That new ones bring pleasure when everything blends?
But when we want someone who thinks as we do,
And who fits, as I said, like last summer's show,
We turn to the friends who have stuck through the years,
Who echo our laughter and dry up our tears.
They know every weakness and fault we possess,
But somehow forget them in friendship's caress.

The story is old, yet fragrant and sweet,
I've said it before, but just let me repeat,
New friends I cherish and treasure their worth,
But old friends to me are the salt of the earth.

                                                                              Winter Magic

Our street was changed by magic
Last night to fairyland.
Where houses stood at twilight,
This morning castles stand.
Freezing raindrops coated
Each bush and blade of grass.
They changed the oaks to crystal,
Our fence to woven glass.
Each castle roof is silver
With fringe along its eaves--
A sparkling, lovely picture
That only winter leaves.

I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe
I pray we 'Il find your light, and hold it in our hearts
When stars go out each night,
Remind us where you are
Let this be our prayer, when shadows fill our day
Help us find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
A world where pain and sorrow will be ended
And every heart that's broken will he mended
And we'll remember we are all God's children
Reaching out to touch you
Reaching to the sky
We ask that life be kind, and watch us from above
We hope each soul will find another soul to love
Let this be our prayer, just like every child
Who needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe
Needs to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we'll be safe.

This one is lovely...

Patterns In The Snow

Overnight the flakes had descended,

and left a carpet of pure white,

A fox awakened from his sleep,

patrolled the frosty night,

The silent frozen world had now,

become a canvas, new,

For patterns to be created,

by the feet of creatures, who

Had ventured out to sample

this delightful snowy land,

Fashioned by an invisible Master,

with his gifted hand.

His paints so subtle, had with skill,

produced true moonlight hues,

Such lovely shades of brilliant white,

soft yellows and deep blues,

An eerie earth, a changed and strange

vast open wide expanse,

Where, up above, each dainty snowflake,

had started its downward dance

And settled, on the serene landscape,

clothed, in its simple dress,

Where we imprint our patterns too,

across a snowbound wilderness.

                                             Dust of Snow
Robert Frost, 1874 - 1963

The way a crow
Shook down on me
The dust of snow
From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart
A change of mood
And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.

Peregrine Falcons

The fearless hunters of the day they circle in the sky
And faster than a swallow tis said that they can fly
They can kill birds far larger than themselves in flight they make the kill
They nest in holes in the sandstone cliffs on the face of the brown hill,
The fearless hunters of the clouds with terror in their cry
The fastest birds of prey on Planet Earth few that fact would deny
Than the Peregrine falcons in their cloaks of dark to grey
You will not find a greater or more fearless bird of prey
They now nest on tall City buildings and though not seen everywhere
They are making a comeback ten years ago they were rare
They travel at breath-taking speeds when when they are in full flight
And to see them wheel above the cliffs is an amazing sight
The fastest birds on Planet Earth though some may not agree
They often cry out in full flight an amazing thing to hear and see.

Fierce Winter Storm

The storm raged in over night
Yes, nature had a plan
It brought terrible conditions
For plant, or beast, or man

It came in so very quickly
The wind was hard and fierce
And when I stepped outside
My lungs and face it pierced

Locked in winter's embrace
The world was cold and hard
Frail dry grass was transformed
As I looked out into my yard

The fences were laced with ice cycles
Rock solid they were from the cold
It was so astounding to watch
The winter ice storm unfold

Not a thing was able to move
If the wind blew we'd never tell
It's the perfect scene to capture
Photographers and artists as well

It's amazing what nature can do
And tomorrow it could be quite warm
But for now I'll take out my camera
And capture this fierce winter storm!

                                                                                        Woods in Winter

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

When winter winds are piercing chill,
And through the hawthorn blows the gale,
With solemn feet I tread the hill
That overbrows the lonely vale.

O're the bare upland, and away
Through the long reach of desert woods,
The embracing sunbeams chastely play,
And gladden these deep solitudes.

Where, twisted round the barren oak,
The summer vine in beauty clung,
And summer winds the stillness broke,
The crystal icicle is hung.

Where from their frozen urns, mute springs
Pour out the river's gradual tide,
Shrilly the skaters iron rings
And voices fill the woodland side.

Alas! how changed from the fair scene,
When birds sang out their mellow lay,
And the winds were soft, and woods were green,
And the song ceased not with the day.

But still wild music is abroad,
Pale, desert woods! within your crowd;
And gathering winds, in hoarse accord,
Amid the vocal reeds pipe loud.

Chill airs and wintry winds! my ear
Has grown familiar with your song;
I hear it in the opening year,--
I listen, and it cheers me long.

I found this poem today and loved it. Thought I would share it here:

I Opened a Book
Julia Donaldson (2014)

I opened a book and in I strode
Now nobody can find me.
I've left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.

I'm wearing the cloak, I've slipped on the ring,
I've swallowed the magic potion.
I've fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.

I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their road with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.

I've finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and my house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me.

The Evening Star

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807 - 1882

Lo! in the painted oriel of the West,
Whose panes the sunken sun incarnadines,
Like a fair lady at her casement, shines
The evening star, the star of love and rest!
And then anon she doth herself divest
Of all her radiant garments, and reclines
Behind the sombre screen of yonder pines,
With slumber and soft dreams of love oppressed.
O my beloved, my sweet Hesperus!
My morning and my evening star of love!
My best and gentlest lady! even thus,
As that fair planet in the sky above,
Dost thou retire unto thy rest at night,
And from thy darkened window fades the light.

The Eagle

by Edwin Curran

The dome of heaven is thy house
Bird of the mighty wing,
The silver stars are as thy boughs
Around thee circling.
Thy perch is on the eaves of heaven
Thy white throne all the skies
Thou art like lightning driven
Flashing over paradise!

The Dalliance of Eagles

by Walt Whitman

Skirting the river road, (my forenoon walk, my rest,)
Skyward in air a sudden muffled sound, the dalliance of the eagles,
The rushing amorous contact high in space together,
The clinching interlocking claws, a living, fierce, gyrating wheel,
Four beating wings, two beaks, a swirling mass tight grappling,
In tumbling turning clustering loops, straight downward falling,
Till o?er the river pois?d, the twain yet one, a moment?s lull,
A motionless still balance in the air, then parting, talons loosing,
Upward again on slow-firm pinions slanting, their separate diverse flight,
She hers, he his, pursuing.

Here is my favorite Walt Whitman poem.

When I heard the learn'd astronomer.

When I heard the learn'd astronomer.
When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me.
When I was shown the charts and diagrams to add, divide and measure them.
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room.
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself
In the mystical moist night air, and from time to time.
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

Sometimes in the world today the only solace to be found is in the peace of wild things.

Another classic:

THE PEACE OF WILD THINGS

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

                                                                   The Day is Done.

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The day is done, and darkness
Falls from the wings of Night,
As a feather is wafted downward
From an eagle in its flight.

I see the lights of the village
Gleam through the rain and the mist,
And a feeling of sadness comes o're me,
That my soul cannot resist:

A feeling of sadness and longing,
That is not akin to pain,
And resembles sorrow only
As the mist resembles the rain.

Come, read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling,
And banish the thoughts of the day.

Not from the grand old masters,
Not from the bards sublime,
Whose distant footsteps echo
Through the corridors of Time.

For, like strains of martial music,
Their mighty thoughts suggest
Life's endless toil and endeavor;
And tonight I long to rest.

Read from some humbler poet,
Whose songs gushed from his heart,
As showers from the clouds of summer,
Or tears from the eyelids start;

Who, through long days of labor,
And nights devoid of ease,
Still heard in his soul the music
Of wonderful melodies,

Such songs have power to quiet
The restless pulse of care,
And come like the benediction
That follows after prayer.

Then read from the treasured volume
The poem of thy choice,
And lend to the rhyme of the poet
The beauty of thy voice.

And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs,
And as silently steal away.

WOW! I am crying reading these beautiful hymns and poems. I went to Decorah over Mother's Day weekend. When I saw mom on the maple, soaring, catching fish, sharing moments with DM, and babies peeking over the nest, I was overcome with emotion. Tears flowed, which surprised me. It was an amazing experience! I don't have any poems right now but will continue to visit this thread to be uplifted and know that there are many others out there who feel the same way I do. THANK YOU!!!

Fireflies in the Garden

BY ROBERT FROST

Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,
And here on earth come emulating flies,
That though they never equal stars in size,
(And they were never really stars at heart)
Achieve at times a very star-like start.
Only, of course, they can't sustain the part.

Love Poem no 16

by Emily Dickinson

Nature, the gentlest mother,
Impatient of no child,
The feeblest or the waywardest,
Her admonition mild

In forest and the hill
By traveller is heard,
Restraining rampant squirrel
Or too impetuous bird.

How fair her conversation,
A summer afternoon,
Her household, her assembly;
And when the sun goes down

Her voice among the aisles
Incites the timid prayer
Of the minutest cricket,
The most unworthy flower.

When all the children sleep
She turns as long away
As will suffice to light her lamps;
Then, bending from the sky

With infinite affection
And infiniter care,
Her golden finger on her lip,
Wills silence everywhere.

Stayed silent (mostly) all day yesterday, but since no one else said anything....."mighty glad to see you back here, gg" and "thanks for the poem."
I'll be silent now!!  :D

Keep Sweet

by Strickland W. Gillilan

Don't be foolish and get sour when things don't just come your way--
Don't you be a pampered baby and declare, "Now I won't play!"
Just go grinning on and bear it;
Have you heartache? Millions share it,
If you earn a crown, you'll wear it--
Keep sweet.

Don't go handing out your troubles to your busy fellow-men--
If you whine around they'll try to keep from meeting you again;
Don't declare the world's "agin" you,
Don't let pessimism win you,
Prove there's lots of good stuff in you--
Keep sweet.

If your dearest hopes seem blighted and despair looms into view,
Set your jaw and whisper grimly, "Though they're false, yet I'll be true."
Never let your heart grow bitter;
With your lips to Hope's transmitter,
Hear Love's songbirds bravely twitter,
"Keep sweet."

Bless your heart, this world's a good one, and will always help a man;
Hate, misanthropy, and malice have no place in Nature's plan.
Help your brother there who's sighing.
Keep his flag of courage flying;
Help him try--'twill keep you trying--
Keep sweet.

One of my favorite poets.  Such sage advice...

Looking Back

by Edgar A. Guest

I might have been rich if I'd wanted the gold
instead of the friendships I've made.
I might have had fame if I'd sought for renown
in the hours when I purposely played.
Now I'm standing to-day on the far edge of life,
and I'm just looking backward to see
What I've done with the years and the days that were mine,
and all that has happened to me.

I haven't built much of a fortune to leave
to those who shall carry my name,
And nothing I've done shall entitle me now
to a place on the tablets of fame.
But I've loved the great sky and its spaces of blue;
I've lived with the birds and the trees;
I've turned from the splendor of silver and gold
to share in such pleasures as these.

I've given my time to the children who came;
together we've romped and we've played,
And I wouldn't exchange the glad hours spent
with them for the money that I might have made.
I chose to be known and be loved by the few,
and was deaf to the plaudits of men;
And I'd make the same choice should the chance
come to me to live my life over again.

I've lived with my friends and I've shared in their joys,
known sorrow with all of its tears;
I have harvested much from my acres of life,
though some say I've squandered my years.
For much that is fine has been mine to enjoy,
and I think I have lived to my best,
And I have no regret, as I'm nearing the end,
for the gold that I might have possessed.

Another poem by Edgar Guest.

The World is Against Me
by Edgar A. Guest

"The world is against me," he said with a sigh.
"Somebody stops every scheme that I try.
The world has me down and it's keeping me there;
I don't get a chance. Oh, the world is unfair!
When a fellow is poor then he can't get a show;
The world is determined to keep him down low."

"What of Abe Lincoln?" I asked. "Would you say
That he was much richer than you are to-day?
He hadn't your chance of making his mark,
And his outlook was often exceedingly dark;
Yet he clung to his purpose with courage most grim
And he got to the top. Was the world against him?

"What of Ben Franklin? I've oft heard it said
That many a time he went hungry to bed.
He started with nothing but courage to climb,
But patiently struggled and waited his time.
He dangled awhile from real poverty's limb,
Yet he got to the top. Was the world against him?

"I could name you a dozen, yes, hundreds, I guess,
Of poor boys who've patiently climbed to success;
All boys who were down and who struggled alone,
Who'd have thought themselves rich if your fortune they'd known;
Yet they rose in the world you're so quick to condemn,
And I'm asking you now, was the world against them?"

Be the difference....

ONE

written by Shawnee Kellie

One word can spark a moment,
One flower can wake the dream;
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald Spring.

One smile can bring a friendship,
One handclasp can lift a soul;
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One cheer can obtain a goal.

One vote can change a Nation,
One sunbeam can lift a room;
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One look can change two lives;
One kiss can make love bloom.

One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer;
One hope can raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.

One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's true;
One life can make a difference,
One life is me and you....

Deep Summer

written by J. Marshall Porter

Cicadas hum their wordless summer song
  From sunup until stars are shining through.
The dust hangs heavy on the weeds along
  Old cow-paths where webs sag with early dew.
Drought shriveled berries hang on red leafed briars
  Where crickets creak in lonely monotones.
Swallows tutor young from farmyard wires
  For coming flights to southern summer zones.

From tall trees over vine canopied glens
  The wood thrush's fluting , summer song is still.
Open shells lie in the nests that wrens
  Built on the old stone milkhouse windowsill.
The bullbats zoom and dart through sunset skies;
  Old warty willows' leaves turn silvery gray.
Blue asters stare with little golden eyes
  And watch the waning summer pass away.

Common Things

written by Leonard G Nattkemper

The things I prize of greatest worth
Are just the common things of earth;
The rain, the sun, the grass, the trees;
The flowers, the birds, the glorious breeze;
Clouds that pass, the stars that shine,
Mountains, valleys, ---all are mine!
Rivers broad, and open sea,
Are riches none can take from me.

And...isn't it time for this one?

                September

    The golden-rod is yellow;
        The corn is turning brown;
    The trees in apple orchards
        With fruit are bending down.

    The gentian's bluest fringes
        Are curling in the sun;
    In dusty pods the milkweed
        Its hidden silk has spun.

    The sedges flaunt their harvest,
        In every meadow nook;
    And asters by the brook-side
        Make asters in the brook,

    From dewy lanes at morning
        The grapes' sweet odors rise;
    At noon the roads all flutter
        With yellow butterflies.

    By all these lovely tokens
        September days are here,
    With summer's best of weather,
        And autumn's best of cheer.

    But none of all this beauty
        Which floods the earth and air
    Is unto me the secret
        Which makes September fair.

    'T is a thing which I remember;
        To name it thrills me yet:
    One day of one September
        I never can forget.

Let Me Be a Gypsy

Let me be a gypsy
    On a bright October day,
When maple trees are burning
    And saffron poplars sway.
Let me be a rover
    When sweet gum is veiled with mauve,
When clouds puff up the mountain
    Like lazy parasols.
I want to feel the breath
    Of crisp autumn on my cheek
And catch the vibrant heartbeat
    Of earth beneath my feet.
One day in the woodland
    Is a treasure I can store---
Relive each golden moment
    When winter's wild winds roar.
Oh, to be a vagabond
    When forests flame with art;
October is my brother---
    We share a gypsy heart.

October

Summer lingers though the woods
Are filled with winter's prophecy
In thinning leaves and russet tones
Of red and yellow tracery.

The morning boasts the songs of birds,
And night is routed gallantly.
But twilight hears the cricket's call
With rhythmic, shrill insistency.

Now from the woods new voices come:
The owl complaining to the moon,
And, echoing through the leafy vault,
The eerie laughter of the loon.

Thin frost upon the meadowland,
A trail of birds across the sky--
A keenness fills the vibrant air
That sends the dead leaves whirling by.

 An Autumn Day of Rest

I love a Sunday morning still
When autumn mist is on the hill
And maple, oak, and apple tree
Praise God in regal finery.

I love to wander by the pond
Where fern and wild rose drop their frond,
To watch the drake who preens a feather
And plans the flight toward warmer weather.

I like to watch each morning's dawn,
A little sad that summer's gone
And glad of sadness that's made sweet
By one more season of life complete.

And when the evening sun has set
And afterglow still lingers yet,
I too will sing with grateful praise
For beauty blessing autumn's days.

My very favorite time of year....

When the Frost is on the Punkin

BY JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY

When the frost is on the punkin and the fodders in the shock,
And you hear the kyouck and gobble of the struttin turkey-cock,
And the clackin of the guineys, and the cluckin of the hens,
And the roosters hallylooyer as he tiptoes on the fence;
O, its thens the times a feller is a-feelin at his best,
With the risin sun to greet him from a night of peaceful rest,
As he leaves the house, bareheaded, and goes out to feed the stock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodders in the shock.

Theys something kindo harty-like about the atmusfere
When the heat of summers over and the coolin fall is here
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees,
And the mumble of the hummin-birds and buzzin of the bees;
But the airs so appetizin; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur that no painter has the colorin to mock
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodders in the shock.

The husky, rusty russel of the tossels of the corn,
And the raspin of the tangled leaves, as golden as the morn;
The stubble in the furries kindo lonesome-like, but still
A-preachin sermuns to us of the barns they growed to fill;
The strawstack in the medder, and the reaper in the shed;
The hosses in theyr stalls below the clover over-head!
O, it sets my hart a-clickin like the tickin of a clock,
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodders in the shock!

Then your apples all is gethered, and the ones a feller keeps
Is poured around the celler-floor in red and yeller heaps;
And your cider-makin s over, and your wimmern-folks is through
With their mince and apple-butter, and theyr souse and saussage, too! ...
I dont know how to tell it but ef sich a thing could be
As the Angels wantin boardin, and theyd call around on me?
Id want to commodate em all the whole-indurin flock
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodders in the shock!

SOMETHING TOLD THE WILD GEESE by Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, snow.
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed.
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned, frost.
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice.
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.
Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly,
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

Wishing
by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Do you wish the world were better?
Let me tell you what to do.
Set a watch upon your actions,
Keep them always straight and true.
Rid your mind of selfish motives,
Let your thoughts be clean and high.
You can make a little Eden
Of the sphere you occupy.

Do you wish the world were wiser?
Well, suppose you make a start,
By accumulating wisdom
In the scrapbook of your heart;
Do not waste one page on folly;
Live to learn, and learn to live.
If you want to give men knowledge
You must get it, ere you give.

Do you wish the world were happy?
Then remember day by day
Just to scatter seeds of kindness
As you pass along the way,
For the pleasures of the many
May be ofttimes traced to one.
As the hand that plants an acorn
Shelters armies from the sun.

America Is...

America is a country church,
A school house on the hill,
A freedom for our hearts and minds
To worship as we will;
A lovely, peaceful countryside,
A sky of fairest blue,
It's sunshine on a summer morn,
An autumn sunset, too.

America is the right to dream,
To build ,to plan, succeed;
The mirth and laughter of a child
Without a thought of greed;
It's stars at night, a silver moon,
A valley rich and green,
A challenge we must ever meet,
Unselfishness supreme.

America is a yesterday,
A triumph over hate,
A true compassion for the world,
An interest in their fate;
A humble farmhouse, neat and clean,
It's buildings, straight and tall;
A hope and courage to admire,
with quite enough for all.

It's future hopes, tomorrows dreams,
The finest way of life,
A something real for everyone
Without a thought of strife;
So rich in art, and high ideals,
It's shining liberty;
'Tis all of these and so much more
America is to me.

The Noble and the Brave

A Veteran's Day Tribute

When America had an urgent need,
These brave ones raised a hand;
No hesitation held them back;
They were proud to take a stand.

They left their friends and family;
They gave up normal life;
To serve their country and their God,
They plowed into the strife.

They fought for freedom and for peace
On strange and foreign shores;
Some lost new friends; some lost their lives
In long and brutal wars.

Other veterans answered a call
To support the ones who fought;
Their country had requirements for
The essential skills they brought.

We salute every one of them,
The noble and the brave,
The ones still with us here today,
And those who rest in a grave.

So here?s to our country?s heroes;
They?re a cut above the rest;
Let?s give the honor that is due
To our country?s very best.

                                                                                                  November Dusk

The lake's still pink and silvered gray,
Though long since the sun's last ray
Warmed hill and sage and pinon tree
And my old dog and me
At the end of this weary day.

Tip wags when I set the firewood down.
We'll pause awhile and look around,
Close to the sky, windswept and clear,
Breathe in the sharp, hushed air,
Watch lights come on in the valley town.

In black shadowed cedars, out of sight,
An owl calls welcome to the night.
I never heard so soft a sound,
So sad, yet glad, And all around,
The pink and silver light.

But night will come, day is soon gone.
Rested now, we move on,
Holding lake and air and sky,
Holding the owl's soft cry--
Day's last gift. And we move on.

Happy Birthday cwellsa!  Haven't heard from you lately.
Thank you, gardengirl, walton, and the rest of you for the uplifting poetry we often read here.
It's my 71st today and it's Giving Tuesday and the chat is rolling live for 8 hrs. and I can't log in without throwing away all my cookie blockage to join in.  So here I am!!
And in my opinion, the original tracks off my lp's are the only proper version to listen to when it comes to interpreting the sound of the '60s, and all the new remastered, revisioned, boxed, mixed, blah, blah, blah are a poor substitute.  Sorry Giles Martin!
Well, time to resume my nest, flyway, cliff camera viewing and maybe later joining in on chat if I can work up the nerve to drop my 3rd party cookie blocker and allow Big Brother to peruse my 'puter!!    :D :D :D :D

As an aside: My "White Album" number is 0550970   ;)

The Birth of a Day

Between the darkness and the daylight,
Just as the dawn breaks through;
Ere the sky is ablaze with color
With many a gorgeous hue;
Before it's resplendent with glory,
Ere the sun is well on it way,
There's a holy hush for a moment:
And that is the birth of a day.

This tranquility last but an instant,
Then the birds break forth into song,
And the glorified East announces
That Old Sol is coming along.
Then there's a hustle and bustle;
Oh, fain I that moment would stay.
For I love that sacred quiet
That accompanies the birth of a Day.

A Smile

author unknown

Smiling is infectious,
You catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner,
And someone saw my grin,
When he smiled I realized,
I'd passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,
Then realized its worth,
A single smile, just like mine,
Could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,
Don't leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic quick,
And get the world infected.

Winter - Poem by Walter de la Mare

Clouded with snow
The cold winds blow,
And shrill on leafless bough
The robin with its burning breast
Alone sings now.

The rayless sun,
Day's journey done,
Sheds its last ebbing light
On fields in leagues of beauty spread
Unearthly white.

Thick draws the dark,
And spark by spark,
The frost-fires kindle, and soon
Over that sea of frozen foam
Floats the white moon.

Hey, everyone, after today the days will be getting longer. Thought I would post this to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

Winter Solstice Greetings

A blanket of snow
glistens fluffy and white
Tucks us in, oh so cozy
for the long winter night

We'll light one white candle
Let busy minds release
all the cares of the day
for a moment of peace

On this longest of nights
and shortest of days
Thank the Great Universe
for the sun's growing rays

From our house to yours
Yuletide blessings we send
So gracious life's cycle
No beginnings, no end

For those who aren't here
we've a hole in our lives
But because we're all one
Their spirit survives

Their breath in the wind
Their voices are heard
in the chirping of crickets
and the sweet singing bird

In the great scheme of things
We're connected to all
If one of us stumbles
Another may fall

So gather your loved ones
Your friends and your foes
We're all in this together
Yes, that's how it goes

Mother Nature can teach us
She'll show us what's best
If we learn from life's lessons
she'll do the rest

So let's light our candles
on Winter Solstice night
Celebrate kindred spirit
and be one with the light

Christmas through the Year

A little bit of Christmas lives
Within the heart each day,
When you do a kindly deed,
Give a word of cheer away.
Why should we save our kindnesses
For just one special time--
The world needs love and caring
When Christmas bells don't chime.

Reach out a hand to help someone;
Cheer some heart today.
The gifts that mean the most
Aren't those for which we pay.
Though tinseled scenes have faded
That mark the yuletide cheer,
Christmas living in the heart
Grows brighter through the year!

---Kay Hoffman

The Lasting Gifts

So many times dear ones shall ask
What would you like this day,
And what would bring you Christmas joy
That I might give away.
A question posed a hundred times
And yet we do forget,
The treasures that would mean the most
The dearest gifts to get.

Expectancy--rich happiness
Good health that means so much,
Undying faith in God above
A loved one's tender touch,
A peace of mind--a happy heart
A confidence serene,
A worthwhile thought to live and grow
A lovely lasting dream.

These are the gifts--the lasting gifts
To treasure through the years,
A zest for living each new day
A smile instead of fears,
What would you like this Christmas Day
So much we all possess,
Abundantly our God gives all
In lasting happiness.

The Disappointed
by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

There are songs enough for the hero
Who dwells on the heights of fame;
I sing of the disappointed--
For those who have missed their aim.

I sing with a tearful cadence
For one who stands in the dark,
And knows that his last, best arrow
Has bounded back from the mark.

I sing for the breathless runner,
The eager, anxious soul,
Who falls with his strength exhausted.
Almost in sight of the goal;

For the hearts that break in silence,
With a sorrow all unknown,
For those who need companions,
Yet walk their ways alone.

There are songs enough for the lovers
Who share love's tender pain,
I sing for the one whose passion
Is given all in vain.

For those whose spirit comrades
Have missed them on their way,
I sing, with a heart o'erflowing,
This minor strain to-day.

And I know the Solar system
Must somewhere keep in space
A prize for that spent runner
Who barely lost the race.

For the plan would be imperfect
Unless it held some sphere
That paid for the toil and talent
And love that are wasted here.

A Winter Day -

by Lucy Maud Montgomery

The air is silent save where stirs
A bugling breeze among the firs;
The virgin world in white array
Waits for the bridegroom kiss of day;
All heaven blooms rarely in the east
Where skies are silvery and fleeced,
And o'er the orient hills made glad
The morning comes in wonder clad;
Oh, 'tis a time most fit to see
How beautiful the dawn can be!

II

Wide, sparkling fields snow-vestured lie
Beneath a blue, unshadowed sky;
A glistening splendor crowns the woods
And bosky, whistling solitudes;
In hemlock glen and reedy mere
The tang of frost is sharp and clear;
Life hath a jollity and zest,
A poignancy made manifest;
Laughter and courage have their way
At noontide of a winter's day.

III

Faint music rings in wold and dell,
The tinkling of a distant bell,
Where homestead lights with friendly glow
Glimmer across the drifted snow;
Beyond a valley dim and far
Lit by an occidental star,
Tall pines the marge of day beset
Like many a slender minaret,
Whence priest-like winds on crystal air
Summon the reverent world to prayer.

From an Eagle's View

written by Stacy Smith

Have you ever wondered what it's like to fly free,
To see the world as far as the eye can see,
To view the surroundings from high and from low,
To hear only the sound of a distant echo,
To float in the air with the wind being your guide,
To admire many rainbows that the trees tend to hide,
To see the misty mornings over a beautiful mountaintop,
To glide over a flowing river that never seems to stop,
To watch the animals from over a mile away,
Or to rise above the treetops that glisten in the day?
If you were an eagle you would wonder no more,
For it can see things you have never seen before.
Next time you look into the sky of blue,
Think of what it's like from an eagle's view.

Eagles of Inspiration

by Jim Weller

A single eagle atop a tree
speaks of many things to me.
I see a sentinel brave and strong
perched up high where he belongs.
Diligent throughout the day
aware of all that comes his way,
with eyes alert, he views the skies
for any threat that might pass by.
A pair of eagles in a tree
speaks of other truths to me.
I see a bond that none may shake
and only death itself dare break!
Devoted to each other so,
yet year by year devotion grows,
through every trial that they share
in togetherness and mutual care.
But a pair of eagles on the wing
makes my heart both laugh and sing!
Together, high up in the air,
they soar along without a care.
In unfettered freedom by and by
they dance their way across the sky
until, at last, as I strain to see,
they're absorbed into its azure sea.
What a blessing to behold
this sight more valuable than gold,
this sight that sets my spirit free
to be what I was meant to be!
It snaps harsh tethers of earthly care
and sends me high into the air!
We're designed by God to be so much more,
with hearts to watch, and love, and soar!

Thank you gg for that wonderful poem!
Kinda funny....on 23Apr10 I was feeling typically inspired by watching the activities of D32 and D33 and penned a little ditty of my own.  As usual, I ran out of gas before it became a real poem, but I'll share it anyhow....

Watching the dd's for a little while
Is almost guaranteed to bring a smile
A little longer and you will see
A little of nature's majesty.

Maybe someday I'll stick with the thought and get a three or four stanza one off!!   ;) :)

Thanks again gardengirl! <3

 I had not read this wonderful poem in a long long time.  Enjoy!

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

The Peace Prayer
by
St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Taps

- Major General Daniel Butterfield

Day is done...
Gone the sun
From the lake...
From the hills...
From the sky.
All is well...
Safely rest
God is nigh.

Fading light....
Dims the sight
And a star....
Gems the sky....
Gleaming bright
From afar....
Drawing nigh
Falls the night

When I'm Gone

written by Mrs. Lyman Hancock

When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile.

Forget unkind words I have spoken;
Remember some good I have done.
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun.

Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day.

Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for a day,
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay,

And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best.

Happines

He builded his happiness out of these:
Birds and blossoms and friendly trees;
Books that stood on a little shelf;
Three or four neighbors much like himself;
The wife and children who bore his name--
And he asked no favors from wealth or fame.

He found delight in his garden plot,
Knew marigold and forget-me-not;
He walked the hills and he fished the streams,
With friends he trusted he shared his dreams;
He was sometimes merry and sometimes sad--
But he made the best of what he had.

He found his thrills in the lesser things:
The joy a blossoming peony brings;
The merry songs and the kindly mirth
Of the gentle women and men of earth.
He thanked his God for the right to live
And he never asked more than life could give.

Seekers for happiness wander far,
And, oh, how jaded and tired they are--
Forever pursuing the strange new thrill
They never have caught--and never will;
But he foung friendships and flowers and trees,
And builded his happiness out of these.

GG, your poems are awesome, touching our hearts.  Yes...from yours to ours.
I came across this little poem in a magazine to share here:

When My Garden Lights Its Candles

When my garden lights its candles in the glorious summertime,
My heart dances with the flowers,
Every one that is in bloom.
Sun and Rain have blessed them for me,
Given earth a bright bouquet.
When my garden lights its candles,
Love is growing there each day.

It's been a number of years since I posted this lovely poem. One of my alltime favorites.

My Cathedral

 by Beryl Soward

My cathedral is a lovely place hidden in a glen,
And since I first discovered it, I often go there when
I want to be alone with God or simply just to think,
To sit there mid the beauty till the sky is tinged with pink.

My choirs are the little birds perched high up in the trees;
My organ music sweetly comes from the buzzing of the bees.
No church on earth boasts such a floor as my carpet plush and green;
Here in my own cathedral , I feel just like a queen.

How hushed is my cathedral, so quiet, still and calm...
I can almost hear a preacher read to me a psalm.
There is no perfume in all the world like the perfume in my glen
Of daisies,bluebells,hollyhocks, wooed by a tiny wren.

The pillars of my little church are the trees so strong and tall
Whose spreading boughs make up my roof, stretching over all.
I love to go there after God has washed the earth with rain,
Just to drink in all that beauty to the robin's sweet refrain.

Alas! It's time to leave my glen, the sun is sinking low,
But my cathedral waits for me...and this I always know.

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Song of the American Eagle

I build my nest on the mountain's crest,
Where the wild winds rock my eaglets to rest,
Where the lightnings flash, and the thunders crash,
And the roaring torrents foam and dash;
For my spirit free henceforth shall be
A type of the sons of Liberty.
Aloft I fly from my a?rie high,
Through the vaulted dome of the azure sky;
On a sunbeam bright take my airy flight,
And float in a flood of liquid light;
For I love to play in the noontide ray,
And bask in a blaze from the throne of day.
Away I spring with a tireless wing,
On a feathery cloud I poise and swing;
I dart down the steep where the lightnings leap,
And the clear blue canopy swiftly sweep;
For, dear to me is the revelry
Of a free and fearless Liberty.
I love the land where the mountains stand,
Like the watch-towers high of a Patriot band;
For I may not bide in my glory and pride,
Though the land be never so fair and wide,
Where Luxury reigns o'er voluptuous plains,
And fetters the free-born soul in chains.
Then give to me in my flights to see
The land of the pilgrims ever free!
And I never will rove from the haunts I love
But watch, from my sentinel-track above,
Your banner free, o'er land and sea,
And exult in your glorious Liberty.
O, guard ye well the land where I dwell,
Lest to future times the tale I tell,
When slow expires in smoldering fires
The goodly heritage of your sires,
How Freedom's light rose clear and bright
O'er fair Columbia's beacon-hight,
Till ye quenched the flame in a starless night.
Then will I tear from your pennon fair
The stars ye have set in triumph there;
My olive-branch on the blast I'll launch,
The fluttering stripes from the flagstaff wrench,
And away I'll flee; for I scorn to see
A craven race in the land of the free!

Another one of my favorites:

Ithaca

When you start on your journey to Ithaca,
then pray that the road is long,
full of adventure, full of knowledge.
Do not fear the Lestrygonians
and the Cyclopes and the angry Poseidon.
You will never meet such as these on your path,
if your thoughts remain lofty, if a fine
emotion touches your body and your spirit.
You will never meet the Lestrygonians,
the Cyclopes and the fierce Poseidon,
if you do not carry them within your soul,
if your soul does not raise them up before you.

Then pray that the road is long.
That the summer mornings are many,
that you will enter ports seen for the first time
with such pleasure, with such joy!
Stop at Phoenician markets,
and purchase fine merchandise,
mother-of-pearl and corals, amber and ebony,
and pleasurable perfumes of all kinds,
buy as many pleasurable perfumes as you can;
visit hosts of Egyptian cities,
to learn and learn from those who have knowledge.

Always keep Ithaca fixed in your mind.
To arrive there is your ultimate goal.
But do not hurry the voyage at all.
It is better to let it last for long years;
and even to anchor at the isle when you are old,
rich with all that you have gained on the way,
not expecting that Ithaca will offer you riches.

Ithaca has given you the beautiful voyage.
Without her you would never have taken the road.

My Loyal Friend

written by Pat A. Fleming

Outside my bedroom window
Stands an old majestic tree.
She's been standing there for decades,
Just as proud as she can be.

And every morning when I wake,
She's the first thing I see.
This lovely constant in my life,
So magnificent and free.

I can see the early, rising sun
Peeking through her lush green leaves.
I can hear her moving gently,
In the summer's warming breeze.

She has a personality
That she wants the world to see.
And her moods are ever changing
Behind her silent dignity.

She responds to every season,
In her own unfettered way.
All we have to do is gaze at her
To know what season's on its way.

In the Spring she comes alive again,
As her leaves begin to bloom.
And beneath the sun's attention,
You can almost see her swoon.

And in the heat of the summertime,
When her joy is magnified.
She has never looked more beautiful,
All "decked out to the nines."

And when the Fall comes creeping in,
And a chill floats on the breeze,
She prefers to don more earthy tones,
And does just what she please.

But when the Winter's looming large,
It's impossible to hide
As her barren limbs droop soulfully.
They betray her grief inside.

She's stood by me through all my days.
She's watched me laugh and cry.
She's listened so intently
While I've pondered on my life.

And when I see her dank and weary,
I will sit with her sometimes.
And all the years we've shared together
Will come rushing back to mind.

But both of us are strong and true.
We've become the closest friends,
And we will weather every storm
Together till the end.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Seems to me we could use some positive thinking and hope these days...

The Power of One

One song can spark a moment,
One whisper can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.

One smile begins a friendship,
One moment can make one fall in luv.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal

One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.

One step must start each journey.
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.

One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what's true,
One life can make a difference,
You see, it's up to you!

The ditches across Iowa are filled with dozens and dozens of butterflies flying from wildflower to wildflower.  Driving through the countryside yesterday I saw huge patches of Queen Annes Lace. There was a lot of it along the bike trail in Decorah as well as we pedaled at After the Fledge.  It brought to mind this lovely childhood poem.

Queen Anne's Lace

by Mary Leslie Newton

Queen Anne, Queen Anne, has washed her lace
(She chose a summer day)
And hung it in a grassy place
To whiten, if it may.

Queen Anne, Queen Anne, has left it there,
And slept the dewy night;
Then waked, to find the sunshine fair,
And all the meadows white.

Queen Anne, Queen Anne, is dead and gone
(She died a summer's day),
But left her lace to whiten on
Each weed-entangled way!

Let Me Be a Gypsy

Let me be a gypsy
    On a bright October day,
When maple trees are burning
    And saffron poplars sway.
Let me be a rover
    When sweet gum is veiled with mauve,
When clouds puff up the mountain
    Like lazy parasols.
I want to feel the breath
    Of crisp autumn on my cheek
And catch the vibrant heartbeat
    Of earth beneath my feet.
One day in the woodland
    Is a treasure I can store---
Relive each golden moment
    When winter's wild winds roar.
Oh, to be a vagabond
    When forests flame with art;
October is my brother---
    We share a gypsy heart.

October

Summer lingers though the woods
Are filled with winter's prophecy
In thinning leaves and russet tones
Of red and yellow tracery.

The morning boasts the songs of birds,
And night is routed gallantly.
But twilight hears the cricket's call
With rhythmic, shrill insistency.

Now from the woods new voices come:
The owl complaining to the moon,
And, echoing through the leafy vault,
The eerie laughter of the loon.

Thin frost upon the meadowland,

October

Summer lingers though the woods
Are filled with winter's prophecy
In thinning leaves and russet tones
Of red and yellow tracery.

The morning boasts the songs of birds,
And night is routed gallantly.
But twilight hears the cricket's call
With rhythmic, shrill insistency.

Now from the woods new voices come:
The owl complaining to the moon,
And, echoing through the leafy vault,
The eerie laughter of the loon.

Thin frost upon the meadowland,
A trail of birds across the sky--
A keenness fills the vibrant air
That sends the dead leaves whirling by.

I love this one. What wonderful images it conjures up!

                                                                                Thanksgiving

For the hay and the corn and the wheat that is reaped;
For the labor well done and the barns that are heaped;
For the sun and the dew and the sweet honeycomb;
For the rose and the song and the harvest brought home;
For the trade and the skill and the wealth in our land;
For the talent and strength of the workingman's hand;
For the good that our artists and poets have taught;
For the friendship that trust and affection have brought;
For the homes that with purest devotion are blest;
For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest;
For our country extending from sea to sea;
For the land that is known as the Land of the Free!
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!

He who thanks but with his lips
Thanks but in part;
The full, the true thanksgiving
Comes from the heart.

--J.A. Shedd

                                                                      Thanksgiving Day

With steadfast and unwavering faith, with hard and patient toil,
The Pilgrims wring their harvest from a strange and sterile soil.
And when the leaves turned red and gold beneath the autumn sun,
They knelt beside the scanty sheaves their laboring hands had won.
And each grave elder, in his turn, with bowed and reverent head,
Gave thanks to bounteous Heaven for the miracle of bread.

And so was born Thanksgiving Day. That little dauntless band,
Beset by deadly perils in a wild and alien land,
With hearts that held no fear of death, with stern, unbending wills,
And faith as firmly founded as the grim New England hills,
Though pitiful the yield that sprang from that unfruitful sod,
Remembered in their harvest time the goodly grace of God.

God grant us grace to look on this, our glorious native land,
As but another princely gift from His almighty hand.
May we prove worthy of His trust and keep its every shore
Protected from the murderous hordes that bear the torch of war;
And be the future bright or dark , God grant we never may
Forget the reverent spirit of that first Thanksgiving Day.

--J.J. Montague

From the heart I wish each reader here a time of peace, contentment, love, family, friends and quiet reflection.  I pray you have everything you need.  I pray you can share this day of thanks with those you love.  If by chance you are alone today,  please know you are loved and this door is always open to you.  Come in, friend.  The fire is lit. The teapot is steeping.
There is soup in the kettle and homemade bread on the counter.  You can rest here as long as you like. You will find a good book beside the arm chair.  Enjoy the quiet.

If you are so inclined and want a little company,  may I remind you there will be a flyway chat on Wednesday and Friday of this week from 11-2 Central time. We would love to see you there.

Until next time, be well and blessed, and  please be kind to one another and planet earth.

Here are the lyrics to the beloved Christmas classic performed by St John's choir, Cambridge and directed by the legendary George Guest.
Listen here:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPJBFYuUWvY

Text:

The tree of life my soul hath seen,
Laden with fruit and always green: (x2)
The trees of nature fruitless be
Compared with Christ the apple tree.

His beauty doth all things excel:
By faith I know, but ne'er can tell (x2)
The glory which I now can see
In Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought,
And pleasure dearly I have bought: (x2)
I missed of all; but now I see
'Tis found in Christ the apple tree.

I'm weary with my former toil,
Here I will sit and rest awhile: (x2)
Under the shadow I will be,
Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.

This fruit doth make my soul to thrive,
It keeps my dying faith alive; (x2)
Which makes my soul in haste to be
Jesus Christ the apple tree.

I had never heard this lovely Christmas song until moderator Glogdog shared it with me a number of years ago. It quickly became one of my favorites.

I was putting my 7-year-old grandson to bed and he wanted me to "say a poem." I recited this one and he liked it so much he wanted to hear it again the next night. He closes his eyes and tries to image the scene. I know it's been posted here before. It's one of my favorites.

                                                                           Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are, I think I know,
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

A Prayer in Spring written by Robert Frost

Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;
And give us not to think so far away
As the uncertain harvest; keep us here
All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,
Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;
And make us happy in the happy bees,
The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird
That suddenly above the bees is heard,
The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,
And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,
The which it is reserved for God above
To sanctify to what far ends He will,
But which it only needs that we fulfill.

Springs Miracle

Old winter had his last wild fling,
It snowed and blowed like everything;
And piled up high his cold white stuff,
'Til April hollered "That's enough!"

Today the eaves are running wild,
The sun is shining warm and mild,
And soon sweet flowers will deck the earth,
As springtime gives the world rebirth.

The Revelation of Spring

They were there all the time in the frozen clay.
They were down in the dark where the thick frost lay.
And now they are here where my snowboots trod,
Primroses fresh from the hand of God.
They're just like our blessings , hidden from view!
They're there all the time if we only knew.

Here are some words of encouragement for these trying days.

The Bend in the Road

by Helen Steiner Rice

Sometimes we come to life's crossroads
And we view what we think is the end,
But God has a much wider vision
And He knows it's only a bend ---
The road will go on and get smoother
And after we've stopped for a rest,
The path that lies hidden beyond us
Is often the path that is best.
So rest and relax and grow stronger.
Let go and let God share your load
And have faith in a brighter tomorrow
You've just come to a bend in the road.

Storms Bring Out the Eagles

by Helen Steiner Rice

When the storms of life gather darkly ahead,
I think of these wonderful words I once read
And I say to myself as threatening clouds hover
Don't fold up your wings and run for cover

But like the eagle spread wide your wings
and soar far above the trouble life brings,
For the eagle knows that the higher he flies
The more tranquil and brighter become the skies

And there is nothing in life God ever asks us to bear
That we can't soar above On the Wings of Prayer,
And in looking back over the storm you passed through
You'll find you gained strength and new courage, too,

For in facing life's storms with an eagle's wings
You can fly far above earth's small, petty things.

The  Oak Tree

by Johnny Ray Ryder Jr

A mighty wind blew night and day
It stole the oak tree's leaves away
Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark
Until the oak was tired and stark

But still the oak tree held its ground
While other trees fell all around
The weary wind gave up and spoke.
How can you still be standing Oak?

The oak tree said, I know that you
Can break each branch of mine in two
Carry every leaf away
Shake my limbs, and make me sway

But I have roots stretched in the earth
Growing stronger since my birth
You'll never touch them, for you see
They are the deepest part of me

Until today, I wasn't sure
Of just how much I could endure
But now I've found, with thanks to you
I'm stronger than I ever knew

Springtime in Your Heart

If you can feel the beauty of a tree
Bereft of leaves that wave or birds that sing;
If you can close your eyes and clearly see
Not branches cold but sleeping signs of spring;
If you can look beyond the windswept scenes
Of barren trees and lonely wintry art;
If you can view the browns and see the greens,
Then you are holding springtime in your heart!

---William Arthur Ward

I Asked The Tree

I asked the tree how old it was,
How fresh its memory of seasons,
The generations of birds it's known---
How differed, how soon they are flown.

It pondered a while, shaking its head,
And softly whispering , I thought it said,
    "You might well ask me
     How old is laughter,
     How new is the earth,
     How old is wisdom
     Or what is birth."

Then it grew silent, its leaves held still,
While its roots pushed deeper against the hill.

---Maxwell B. Houghland

I Plant an Acorn

I'm going to plant an acorn now
 Where not a tree is near,
And when the years have passed perhaps
 An oak tree will stand here.

I may not be the one to feel
 The shadow of its spread;
I may not see the squirrels play
 In branches overhead.

But if it gives a shady spot
 For someone needing rest,
Or if it shelters carefully
 Some grateful robins's nest,

Then I will feel a deep reward
 To know my little deed
Of planting now an acorn
 Will serve another's need.

---Ellen E. Morrison

Today I am wishing you a quiet, peacefilled day.  Know that you are cared for.  Take some time to savor a bit of sun, a gentle breeze, a lovely bird song and the assurance that the door here is always open and it is safe here. <3   Blessings on your day,   GG

RIP Bill Withers

Lean On Me

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me (call me)
If you need a friend (call me) call me uh huh(call me) if you need a friend (call me)
If you ever need a friend (call me)
Call me (call me) call me (call me) call me
(Call me) call me (call me) if you need a friend
(Call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me)

Eagle Poem

BY JOY HARJO

To pray you open your whole self
To sky, to earth, to sun, to moon
To one whole voice that is you.
And know there is more
That you can?t see, can?t hear;
Can?t know except in moments
Steadily growing, and in languages
That aren?t always sound but other
Circles of motion.
Like eagle that Sunday morning
Over Salt River. Circled in blue sky
In wind, swept our hearts clean
With sacred wings.
We see you, see ourselves and know
That we must take the utmost care
And kindness in all things.
Breathe in, knowing we are made of
All this, and breathe, knowing
We are truly blessed because we
Were born, and die soon within a
True circle of motion,
Like eagle rounding out the morning
Inside us.
We pray that it will be done
In beauty.
In beauty.

Don't Quit

John Greenleaf Whittier

When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is strange with its twists and turns
As every one of us sometimes learns
And many a failure comes about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is failure turned inside out.
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell just how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

Eagle

sung by ABBA

They came flying from far away, now I'm under their spell
I love hearing the stories that they tell
They've seen places beyond my land and they've found new horizons
They speak strangely but I understand
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please
As all good friends we talk all night, and we fly wing to wing
I have questions and they know everything
There's no limit to what I feel, we climb higher and higher
Am I dreaming or is it all real?
Is it true I'm an eagle?
Is it true I can spread my wings?
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky (I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly (What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please
And I dream I'm an eagle
And I dream I can spread my wings
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky (I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly (What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
Flying high, high, I'm a bird in the sky (I'm an eagle)
I'm an eagle that rides on the breeze
High, high, what a feeling to fly (What a feeling)
Over mountains and forests and seas
And to go anywhere that I please

As a member of the RRP family (I like to think anyways) I suggest signage be placed on the Bike Trail above and below the "Close Viewing Area" that states:
                                   Visitors are entering a Quiet Zone!!!  Please speaks in whispers (or at least guarded tones)
                                   while viewing the Eagle Nest or taking pictures.  Until the eaglets fledge, sudden loud
                                   noises or actions might create a situation that would endanger the young birds.  Your
                                   cooperation will be appreciated.  Non-compliance can result in charges by the Federal
                                   Government under the "(whatever regulation is appropriate)".  (I'm leaving that to RRP)
And now I'll send a donation to smooth the waters!!   :) ;) ;D  ::)

GG will be sorely missed by all who knew her.   I don't have words to describe her presence or her genuineness but she gently touched my life with her wisdom and kindness in chats and in the Forum.  Because she loved poetry:

WHEN DEATH COMES

When death comes
like the hungry bear in autumn;
when death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse

to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
when death comes
like the measle-pox

when death comes
like an iceberg between the shoulder blades,

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering:
what is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?

And therefore I look upon everything
as a brotherhood and a sisterhood,
and I look upon time as no more than an idea,
and I consider eternity as another possibility,

and I think of each life as a flower, as common
as a field daisy, and as singular,

and each name a comfortable music in the mouth,
tending, as all music does, toward silence,

and each body a lion of courage, and something
precious to the earth.

When it's over, I want to say all my life
I was a bride married to amazement.
I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.

When it's over, I don't want to wonder
if I have made of my life something particular, and real.

I don't want to find myself sighing and frightened,
or full of argument.

I don't want to end up simply having visited this world.

--Mary Oliver

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

Now I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth,
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
And if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah...

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Kinda quiet around here without gardengirl! :'(  So here's something for Halloween.

The Raven

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore--
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
   Only this and nothing more.

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak  December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow,--vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow--sorrow for the lost Lenore--
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore--
   Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me--filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
"Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door--
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door--
   This it is and nothing more."

Presently my soul grew stronger, hesitating then no longer,
"Sir," said I, "or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you"--here I opened wide the door--
   Darkness there and nothing more.

Deep into the darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
"Surely," said I, "surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore--
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore--
   "Tis the wind and nothing more!"

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder that before.
"Surely," said I, "surely this is something at my window lattice;
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore--
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore--
   "Tis the wind and nothing more!"

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore,
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door--
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door--
   Perched and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
"Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, there, "I said, "art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient Raven wandering for the Nightly shore--
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!"
   Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

Much I marvelled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning--little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blessed with seeing bird above his chamber door--
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above the chamber door,
   With such name as "Nevermore."

But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour,
Nothing farther then he uttered--not a feather then he fluttered--
Till I scarcely more than muttered "Other friends have flown before--
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."
   Then the bird said "Nevermore."

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so softly spoken,
"Doubtless," said I, "what it utters is its only stock and store
Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster
Follow fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore--
Tis the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore
   Of 'Never--nevermore'."

But the Raven still beguiling my sad fancy into smiling
Straight I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird, and bust and door;
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to linking
Fancy unto fancy, thinking what this ominous bird of yore
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
   Meant in croaking "Nevermore."

Then I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat divining, with my head at ease reclining
On the cushion's velvet lining that the lamp-light gloated o"er,
But whose velvet-violet lining with the lamp-light gloating o'er,
   She shall press, ah, nevermore!

Then, me thought, the air grew denser, perfumed from an unseen censer
Swung by seraphim whose foot-falls tinkled on the tufted floor.
"Wretch," I cried, "thy God hath lent thee--by these angels he hath sent thee
Respite--respite and nepenthe, for thy memories of Lenore;
Quaff, on quaff this kind nepenthe and forget the lost Lenore;
   Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil!--
Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted--
On this home by Horror haunted--tell me truly, I implore--
is there--is there balm in Gilead!--tell me--tell me, I implore!"
   Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Prophet!" said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil!
By the Heaven that bends above us--by that God we both adore--
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore--
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore."
   Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

"Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!"  I shrieked, upstarting--
"Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!--quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!"
   Quoth the Raven "Nevermore."

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor,
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
   Shall be lifted--nevermore!

Thanks, Finn, eburg & seabee, for posting here for gardengirl.  She created this beautiful thread which is a reflection of how she lived her life....picking people up, giving them hope, being a bright star to all she encountered, especially with her kindness.  At Christmastime we think of all those that we've lost, family and friends.  So from my heart to yours, gg, I share this song.  Merry Christmas everyone.

Amusing getting a warning to start a new topic since its been so long since anyone has been here, but sad to realize "from the heart" is a stale topic.  I didn't scroll below the "archives" for all this time seeking the topic, so I, for one, apologize for not being here.  Hope everyone who agrees logs in to say hi and maybe move this category above the Archives.
  Personally, I'm working on trying to reach the "Hero Member" category before my 74th birthday towards the end of this month.  I know I'm long past that with all my "lost" entries when Amy rebooted the Forum in the past, but she's held my count over the last couple times and I'm real close for the first time I think....unless I was already over the first time it happened.  It was so long ago....2012 or 2013....and I didn't pay close attention to my status then.

Eburg, I just read your post about this thread in Beak. I'm embarrassed to say, but I didn't know about this thread.
I don't think this is a stale topic. I hope this thread continues.

I had a friend who passed away 2012. She had this written in her Celebration of Life and I have never forgotten it.
I'd like to post it here.

Bits and Pieces

People. People important to you, people unimportant to you cross our life,
touch it with love and carelessness and move on. There are people who leave you
and you breathe a sigh of relief and wonder why you even came into contact with them.
There are people who leave you and you breathe a sigh of remorse and wonder why they
had to go away and leave such a gaping hole. Children leave parents; friends leave friends.
Acquaintances move on. People change homes. People grow apart. Enemies hate and
move on. Friends love and move on. You think on the many who have moved into your
hazy memory. You look on those present and wonder.

I believe in God's master plan in lives. He moves people in and out of each other's lives,
and each leaves his mark on the other. You find you are made up of bits and pieces
of all who ever touched your life, and you are more because you would be less if they had
not touched you.

Pray God that you accept the bits and pieces in humility and wonder, and never question, and never regret.

Thanks for that posting Lani.  Sometime here I'll find a poem like gg used to post and place it in this thread of wisdom.
