The Christmas Tree
In the cathedral of a forest
stood the tree, unadorned, serene -
with fragrant balsam branches outstretched
in welcome to her snow-powdered green.
Birds came to carol from her proud crown;
deer and hare played and slept at her feet;
from the velvet sky a star shown down
from the East, to make the scene complete.
