Ground Hog Day, and the snow is slowly piling up on N2B and I'm listening to IPR and getting an eco-green feeling, and I was thunderstruck :D by the idea of seeing Frozen Water piling up on the Carbon Sequestration represented by the many branches with which our noble birds build their nest.
And I'm also mulling the results of last night, and as a native-born Iowan and a member of the majority party of the state (Independent-40%) and unable to participate in the Caucus without declaring a party affiliation of either Democrat or Republican, I'm amused by the media deciding whether Iowa's winners are losers and losers are winners.
The season of 2016 is going to be great with the new nest, the new cams, the new crew, and the old mission statement from The Lead Dude....
to preserve and strengthen raptor populations, ....expand participation in raptor preservation, and ....foster the next generation of preservationists.  Thank you Bob!

I'm blushing, Seabee!  :)

Did some numbers crunching:
Iowa population (2015)- 3,123,899
Voting age (78%)- 2,436,412
Number of voters in Iowa Caucuses- 357,509 (14.67%)
Record Republican turnout- 186,000 (7.67%)
2nd highest Democrat turnout- 171,508 (7.03%)
Don't have Cost figures yet, but isn't democracy wonderful!

In the spring of 1974 I was in a college rock band that had the distinct honor of being the "front band" for Earth, Wind, and Fire, a band out of Chicago on their way to Los Angeles and Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, a late Friday night TV show that led to their international fame.  I hadn't heard much of their music at the time, but I certainly became a fan after I saw them.  As local boys, our band thought we'd blow the audience away, but they seemed more knowledgeable, and held their praise for the headliners, and after about two minutes into the Earth, Wind, and Fire set, I understood why.
RIP Maurice White.
Footnote: In 1979 I was in LA visiting my girlfriend, and Maurice lived across the hall in her apartment complex in North Hollywood.  Small world, isn't it?

While watching TV this morning, I heard Wendell Berry reading one of his poems.  What wonderful thoughts!  Here it is:

The Peace of Wild Things

By Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children?s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

I see gardengirl posted this poem back on page 1. :)

walton, thanks for re-posting that poem.  It's just right for me.  :)

I wanted so badly to post this before the Philippine Eagle Benefit last month, but I could not get in to the forum for some reason.  It's working now though, and anytime is a good time to support this wonderful cause, so I'd like to post something Amy posted for us in chat last year.  It is a quote from Bob himself about endangered species, and it is definitely "from the heart"....

Bob used to quote this regarding endangered birds:

The beauty and genius of a work of art may be reconceived, though its first material expression be destroyed; a vanished harmony may yet again inspire the composer; but when the last individual of a race of living beings breathes no more, another heaven and another earth must pass before such a one can be again. We saved the Bald Eagle. We saved the Peregrine Falcon.

Conservation issues in the Philippines seem even more complicated than they are here. The PEF is taking a multi-faceted approach to help people who are living in extreme poverty understand why leaving trees and habitat is more important than taking them down.
Connecting people to wildlife was something Bob believed in deeply, and we all believe in it too!

So if you can, please donate, or simply do an act of kindness in Bob or RRP's name.  Even a smile to a stranger can make someone's life a little better.  Thanks for hanging in there with me y'all...

your humble servant,

Izzy :-*

Izzy - thanks so much for sharing Bob's heartfelt words.  The Philippine Eagle Foundation just posted this pic a few hours ago of Pag-asa, the first captive-bred Philippine Eagle. He is now 24 yrs old and people can still visit him at their center.  Here's their official website.  RRP and Cornell Lab of Ornithology will help to carry on Bob's mission to save this species.

Thank you so much for this, gardengirl.  It does remind me of my own grandma.  I learned so much from her.

Beautifully written from your heart, gg.  I pictured all of your words and memories of your Grandma.  Thank you for sharing this with us.
