Hellgate Osprey update

Cam 2 is on the side of the building!   #HellgateOsprey

A new and improved Cam 1 has been installed at Hellgate Osprey nest.

Good morning Beakers!
Hello Eagles4, Lisa, Ezee, Eburg, Weasel, Jilltosa, Kb, Tsk, Karen, Oldguy, Puff, Eaglesrock, Emyrauld, Lilbro, Blschue, Lori, Clynn, Tig, Baz, Phyl, Peep, Jaspurr, Lindy, Pink, BL, Bggolden, T40, ssrl, Maxie, Nrstooge, Paulie, jicaji, LB, and All!

Clynn, Cheery morning pics... Things have been changing with Aly's work situation weekly. At this point she is not coming home until first week in May for a two week visit. We don't even ask anymore. LOL! ... I've been worried about the flocks of geese at Decorah, there has to be a couple of nutty female geese wanting to lay their eggs wherever with no responsibility. Or even trying to destroy other nests! Just like at Eaglecrest! I'd hate to see that at Decorah.  :-\ ... heartbreaking news at Decorah North. :'( ... thanks for volcano updates. Been watching too.

Karen, good luck at the dentist... it would be interesting if RRP could get the eggs at the North nest to see what went wrong. But, I have a feeling they will leave the eggs as it and let nature deal with it.  :'(

Phyl, beautiful American Bald Eagle photos! Thank you for the bird report and RRP's sad announcement.  :( ... sorry to hear Jim hasn't been feeling well. Sending prayers for you both.

Lisa, I hope Miss need-a-nest goose found her own little place to lay her egg.

The Sauces Canyon eaglet has a name! Please welcome Betty Lou, a combination name in honor of Betty White and a donor's grandmother (Louise) 💚

Lani, what a sweet little video of Betty Lou and her Mom & Dad! I am so happy for them to have a baby to raise this year! Oh no with Aly, but a two week visit will be nice! I hope Shannon is doing well in Las Vegas!  The view of the nest from the new cam that I saw yesterday was a slightly different angle, I couldn't see where the train goes by...Beautiful view of the mountains with the snow! I love the 'Miss-need-a-nest' comment!

Lisa, you find the prettiest morning coffee cups!  Looks like some latte art on top of the coffee!!

Phyl, Great 365, a few years ago we could see wild turkeys in a field across the road, it was fun to watch them. What is a group of wild turkeys called? Generally a flock, but... https://birdfact.com/articles/what-is-a-group-of-turkeys-called#:~:text=1.%20A%20brood%20of%20turkeys   Beautiful eagles in your Good Morning!

oldguy, dang, I forgot to look at the date on that news! Looks pretty calm in Iceland right now...

karen, maybe when Dad North stops brooding RRP will go up and get the eggs. So sad, we had such high hopes....

Should I try this for the Munchkins?

PHYL   WOW  Stunning eagle shots .  I don't think I can crab walk.  LOLOL   Sounds like a pretty busy program.   Scary results from Cornell.  (((Jim)))

LISA   You always find such cozy AM pics  ;D

LANI   I've been following those nice upgrades at Hellgate.   Cute name at Sauces  ;D   Gosh, Now May is only a 2 week visit - before a move back!

CLYNN  I'd be very nervous to do that with the bar of Ivory.  There was a gal on the news a few days ago who microwaved a gummy substance that was kid friendly for the microwave - It burned the whole side of her face... :-\     Phew - Lake Superior Island!

JASPURR sent this to me and gave permission to post

"The Potoo is NOT an owl.  It is  cousin of the nightjars which includes nighthawks and whip-poor-wills.  I heard one in Panama.  It scared the living daylights out of me.  A group of divers built a fire on the beach after a night dive.  Some of us, including myself, fell asleep and heard this awful ghostly noise.  All of us got up and went back to our tents.  LOL.   Dr Gale of the Panama Smithsonian Research Center told me what we heard.

https://ebird.org/species/compot1"

...

Gosh, sorry I said the word, "owl" in my post to Lani about Kala the Potoo. I think I remember Lani posting a while back that related info from the place caring for Kala the Potoo about the potoo being in the nightjar family, too. Or maybe not just recently, but someone did once before. Oh, maybe that wonderful rehab place made a boo boo in that earlier more recent post - not the end of the world. I know it's in the nightjar family, but "owl" is what fell out of my keyboard when I posted. Harsh. Geez... I feel castigated. Anyway, it's all good, and always good to clarify the correct bird family it's in. Thanks.

TSK, you can tell Jaspurr I corrected my previous post to Lani about the potoo, and I removed the word, "owl."

I have a special fondness for another member of the Nightjar family - the Chuck-Will's-Widow, which bears a striking resemblance to the Potoo. Every summer, a Chuck-will's-widow calls outside my back bedroom window, from the shrub line around the natural "bog" a few feet behind my building. I will listen as long as it lasts, as the call is wonderful, and seemingly endless at that time of day. A very special bird.

Have a good evening, Beakers. I just stopped by to try to catch up on a couple days of posts in the Beak. Well, I only had time to read 1 post from where I last posted a couple of days ago, and I think I will need to finish reading the rest of them sometime tomorrow.

Lani, I will be pulling for Arizona tonight!  ;) ;D

Here's a little more detail on the islands:
#1 Isle Royale _ on Lake Superior.
#2 Ryan Island _ on Siskiwit Lake.
#3 Vernal pond _  on Ryan Island.
#4 Small boulder _ in vernal pond on Ryan Island on Siskiwit Lake on Lake Superior.
~ Clear as mud Ay' ~

Worlds coolest island turtle on that day perhaps .  ;D

https://maps.app.goo.gl/5sWM6ZGueL9LQa7e9

Quote from: Knowledge Hub
This incredible natural phenomenon exists on Lake Superior, which is the largest freshwater lake in the world. Within this massive lake lies Isle Royale, a large island surrounded by the clear waters of Lake Superior. But the story doesn’t stop there. On Isle Royale, there is another smaller lake called Siskiwit Lake.

Inside Siskiwit Lake, there is yet another island, known as Ryan Island, and on this island, there is a small pond that holds a little boulder.

When the pond on Ryan Island floods, this boulder essentially becomes the smallest "island" on what could be considered the most layered island setting in the world. It’s an island within a lake, on an island within another lake, on the largest island in the largest freshwater lake on the planet. This layered structure is a fascinating example of how complex and unexpected nature can be. It’s like a natural nesting doll, showcasing the wonder of our world’s geography in a simple, yet mind-bending way.

I can't find the small pond on Ryan Island with a little boulder in it on google maps, but I have no doubt there is a little seasonal / vernal pond on Ryan Island with a little boulder in it.   8)

So if there's a turtle on that boulder he/she is in a very unique place on the planet and doesn't even know it.    8) 8)

BTW Clynn if you're thinking about heading to Ryan Island it is not a "for the faint of heart" kind of place to get to at all.  :)
I suppose we could cheat and take a float plane with canoes/kayaks to Isle Royal, but even from the 3 legal landing sites it quite the paddle/portage adventure to Siskiwit Lake and then on to Ryan Island. From there the "finding" begins.
And ain't no one saying exactly where the vernal pond on Ryan Island is exactly.
Ryan Island is also a trail less bushwhack island and it's about 39 Acres in size.   :o   ::)
You know me.  Now I wanna go .   ;)   ;D

some bounce

I felt a small release in my back this morning when I did a gentle twist, so I went to the pool after a good night's rest.
And the P.T. doc called to see how I was. He offered a massage before appt Tuesday and will come to the pool on the 11th to recommend moves...

Lani-   ;D Miss need-a-nest goose, hilarious!   I hope she found a place, too.  Those look like some nice cams too that Hellgate installed, very clear pics.  Wonder if they are 4K cams.
Awww, Betty Lou!

clynn - Yes, try that for the munchkins and also for us Beakers, who want to know if it really works!  ;D ;D  The remains of DN19 was taken out a lil after 11:30am by Mr N, as shown on live feed.  He and DNF are still taking turns on the remaining egg.

tsk - Thank you!  Pinterest has the best coffee cups.  I just type in Spring coffee, or Winter coffee and all the different cuppa's come up.

baz and BL - Waving at ya!

Good night, everyone  :)

Thanks BL - I was wondering if it was Lake Siskiwit or Lake Sargent - both having an island large enough to have a pond.  I checked on Google Earth and no pond shows up on either small island.  In 1974 I hiked from Windigo to Rock Harbor - camped on the shore of Lake Desor.  Did not go to either of the big lakes.  I have the old topo map filed somewhere here, but came up empty on my quick search - o well  ::)

some bounce

Many moons ago... sometime in the 80s? ... I joined a group of 11 strangers (my boss at the time knew a captain) on a sailing trip (6 folks each on 2  40 footers) from Port Superior, WI to Isle Royale. We spent a day at Chippewa Harbor. The plan was ... to take a dingy to Lake Richie and make it to Hastings Island. I could have those locations incorrect, I only remember the "visit the largest island in the largest lake on the largest island in the largest lake". Unfortunately, the little outboard wouldn't fire up. We did, however, fight a 60 m.p.h. gale in 14 ft. seas on our way out of Indigo a few days later. We retreated to the island and sailed out the next day. There are many more stories of that trip. Quite the memory.

My Bro had taught me how to sail on his 35 footer on Lake Pepin.

Well, I downloaded (USGS 7.5 Topo of Todd Harbor) both the current map (2020) as well as the archive map. (which was aerial photo'd in 1955 and 1981, with verification in 1984 and published in 1985) and neither indicate a pond on Ryan Island - so I guess BL needs to go there and do a recon to verify ... ;) ;D

All I remember about Isle Royale is the wolf stories....During some winters they can cross between the mainland and Isle Royale. However, there has been in breeding when the water is open some winters.

Gee, I can't remember much of the rest except maybe a rescue drop has been made to try and recover the pack to more diversity?

You all see any wolves?

Are there wolves on the island in 2025?...guess I'll have to check with Grok...LOL

Quite the distance on a sailboat tig!....I've only sailed once off the coast of Santa Monica on a large sailboat, that's it. How many miles was that hike oldguy?..

It was a 6 day hike - I think it was about 35 miles - so not rushed, but the terrain along the backbone was wicked (about 2 days) - limited tree cover and sharp/uneven rocks, constantly up and down.  My then wife was the experienced hiker (Girl Scouts) and we traveled at about 30% body weight for backpacks.  Met a solo hiker that passed us in that area that was traveling at 60% with full ax and fishing gear, he left us behind real quick.  I had improper foot wear for the terrain and damaged my feet - new expensive shoes and 3-4 weeks before I could walk without pain.  Still can not wear cheap shoes today.
