Kia ora koutou (hello everyone) The Royalcam nest.

Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Royalcam chick at Signal Station Flat has grown to 3.1 kg on day 35 (Tuesday 4th of March). This is a big 1.1 kg increase on the weight from last week.

Mum, Dad and female chick!  :-*

The results are in. Signal Station Trig chick is a female & she weighed a whopping 3.1 kg! What are her parents feeding her-chick was fed 5/6x over the last couple of days.
Good thing Rangers Colin & Scott used the green basket!

In this photo you can see 4 nests with chicks. SSTrig Chick is the one in the middle, you can see the cam stand just a few feet away from her. Now you can see where other chicks are located.

Yesterday Chick SSTrig turned 42 days old, her weight was 3 kg
That's a weight loss of only 100 g since last week.
Plus she was fed by Mom GLG a couple of hours after being weighed.

Royal Albatross update  :-*
Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Royalcam chick at Signal Station Flat has grown to 4.1kg on day 49 (Tuesday 18h of March). This is a 1.1 kg increase on last week's weight and does not include the feed from dad, RLK/A85 at 2.30 pm. Today’s weight is 500g above average for a female.

Heat and gular fluttering
During warm days birds keep their body temperature down by moving the thin skin on the throat. This is called gular fluttering. We only turn on irrigation for chicks in the post-guard stage if the heat is extreme. A parent returning from the ocean can also feel the heat from the land more readily than one that has been on the nest for a while. They soon adjust, however.

When we do irrigate, each nest is set up with an individual so that the wind direction directs the mist to the birds. mist spray which needs to be situated.

Kia ora koutou (hello everyone)
The Royalcam nest.

On rainy days the double layer of down protects the chicks from the weather now they are in post-guard stage.
Since hatching at 286g on the 28th of January, the Royalcam chick at Signal Station Trig has grown to 4.7 kg on day 56 (Tuesday 25th of March). This is a 0.6 kg increase on last week’s weight. Today’s weight is 600g above average for a female.

Big girl!  ;D

Bad hair day!  ;D

Here mom GLG is teaching SSTrig the Clacking Defense. She sniffs the area where Dad RLK had been and makes a noise/gesture to warn SSTrig of another Albie's presence. SSTrig understands and copies.... This will help SS to defend herself against young Albie Juvies or adults that may seek to harm her.

The nest of KA87, YRK, and their female chick is located at Wet Rock Track. Nests of other well-known adult Royal Albatross that you might recognize their names from past seasons.
