This is a good looking fellow.  Bill.

The weather thing that has been approaching for the last dew days passed between here and Cuba yesterday,  entered the Gulf of Mexico in the afternoon and then blossomed into a tropical depression and is working up to a storm.  I am  glad it did not happen sooner.  We will get a lot of rain but that is all.

Hoping that cal is getting better  and is resting as much as it is possible for her to do.  Further hoping all of you have a pleasant Monday, our last one in August..

It was an interesting day at the Bear Center.  Curator Sharon Herrell gives a rundown:Tasha and Sharon Herrell
Tasha and Sharon Herrell

?This morning after the bears had breakfast Tasha sat by Ted's end of the den playing with the yellow duck. I walked up and she indicated she wanted a head rub which quickly turned into a play period. Tasha is gentle and likes to have her back rubbed and around her ears.

She left her den around 9:40 and came back by herself without Holly's help at 12:40. She was observed playing by herself with a small balsam near the daybed area.

During the 12:00 Behind-the-Scenes tour, we observed Holly digging about 15 feet from the cabin den. She was so engaged that she didn't bother to look up for several minutes. In the picture she is standing on the rock with dirt on her nose. The digging area is just below the rock. She then moved to the mound area. Visitors got a rare view of how bears dig dens as they heard and watched the dirt fly. They were amazed as Holly would sit and pant then disappear into a well dug hole.?

Hello Jewelies.

It is a hot one today.  Sure enjoyed the last few days of cooler temps.  Right back up to 85 again.

Well, I just saw that one of my favorite old time actors passed today, Gene Wilder.  Gosh he gave me sooo many hours of laughter with his comedy genius in all the movies he was in.

I will be mostly absent this coming week.  I have a house painting project going on.  You know how that goes.  Paint covered fingers and laptops do not do so good together.  So I guess, I will be shutting her down for the most part, maybe look after dark; if I am not too sore and tired.  LOL.

In any case, I wish each and everyone of you a safe and happy week.

Awww I love the bears in the kitchen with the stone fireplace JP!

Good luck with your painting project Eaglette, we'll miss you, but understand.

That chickadee by Tasha's cam is too funny.

What a neat expression on Bill with his tongue out a little bit.  :D  I'm glad that storm missed you and you'll mainly be looking at rain JP.  I've been watching it.  I remember one year you posted pictures of flooding in Key West.

Ohhhh Tasha has a yellow duck!  :D Hmmm, digging dens, is fall on it's way?  There are two maple trees on our street that are gradually starting to turn.  WHY???!!!  :)

We were in the upper 70's and humid as all get out.  It has cooled down to 71 now, but SO humid yet.  Any rain has missed us.  Hope this humidity breaks soon!!

I'm so glad things went the way they did for you Cal -- Jim home, water down, etc.  We can't lose you!  Yellow jackets live in the ground and will follow you too.  They get downright NASTY.  How's Scootie been doing since that seizure a while back?

One of Juliet's cubs in 2014.

I'm a GOM.  I got on the computer only to find that I was connected to the Wi-fi  but had no internet connection.  I spent 45 minutes trying to find the problem and finally found that something called an internet adapter had been disabled.  I have no idea how that came to be as I did not disable it.  Gremlins in my computer?  Anyhow, I am up and running now .  What a way to start my day, blah!

I am not so  grumpy, however, to fail to greet you all with wishes for a pleasant Tuesday, free from aggravations and filled with delight.

No update tonight, Dr. Rogers is behind on deadlines. However, he did want me to share with you a very cute photo sent in from one of the feeding stations! - LG

10:42 (triangles) to get a belt.  The cop tried to loan him his, but then HIS pants wouldn't stay up, so he took it back.

Oh my gosh Juliet's cub for 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :)

That's a heck of a thing when there is some "little" thing that stops a bigger thing from happening and trying to find it!  I'm glad you weren't too grumpy for your good morning to us.  :D

Oh Cal that cub sitting on mom!!  Fingers crossed on Scootie.

Ooops on the dog that escaped and got caught.

Ugh, it's 72 with 83% humidity.  It felt a lot nicer before when it was cloudy, now the sun is pretty much out.  I saw a couple more maple trees other than the couple on our street that are changing color already.

Hi Jewelies! It's still hot and miserable out. I'm sick of it. Rain keeps passing by us. My yard is brown and crunches when walked on. Wanted to get in the pool today but my neighbor is having a new metal roof  put on his house. There are 4 men up there working and they can see into my backyard! I don't like an audience when I'm in my bathing suit! Since I couldn't go out, I did some touch up painting all over the house. Anything that was white and needed a touch up got it! Like Eaglette said, I, too, have painted fingers! Lol!

Cal, fingers crossed that Scootie goes even longer without a seizure! That epi pen has been in the news lately. Guess you can get a $300 coupon to help pay for it. Your insurance will probably pay for it, don't you think? Crow was talking to our insurance yesterday and they said they may not pay for his ultra violet light therapy! He has an appointment with the local dermatologist tomorrow. So we'll see how that goes. Had to laugh when you called Sweets unruly! Lol! That was funny! Molly and Boo can be unruly when we try to trim their nails!

Nora, there are some trees here starting to lose their leaves probably stress related. I'm afraid it won't be a good year for leaf colors. Hope I'm wrong. I love to go leaf peeping!

Hi Jp and Eaglette!

Hi Nora! It is hot here too. and humid. i think it is suppose to be alot cooler this weekend of course you never know for sure. i saw a couple of dead leaves on the walk out patio from the basement must be from that big maple tree that is next to the retaining wall. it was a little bitty tree and i should of moved it then now it is huge jim said will roots will tear out that wall but i don't want to take it out. right in the corner to next to the pool aka big bird bath. gives shade to the side of the house there. that whole side is jims room. bird love it too. every time i go outside or downstairs i put drama in the living room gate locked keep him away from scootie in case he does have a seizure. oh nora i hope he does not.

Hi Rues! I hope the insurance will pay for that hope dr buzzards gives me one. jim will be furious if i don't something for that. he wants to go with me. make sure i get something cause if it happens again heard i will not as much time to get somewhere. jim said i need to be able to treat myself.  on my discharge paper had i was confused and never confused so i want that fix not the truth. just cause i could not speak does not mean i was confused. hope mr crows violet light therapy is covered or doesn't cost a fortune. that goat is unruly! of course i have not ever gotten a halter for him. hard to find one someone in orscheins told me they use a dog halter on their goat. he  needs to be tied up and comb out. i was trying to comb out his bangs he was in his bed and he was trying to ram me thru the bars. sweets! he was scratching his back with his horns. he is pretty proud of those. they are big now. i would not like an audience when i was swimming either rues! no way. i need to do more than a touch up around here on paint.

A little cub on a big tree.  Ray, 2 years ago.

The last day in August finds me draggin'.  No energy.  I certainly hope that improves as I would like to start September on an up note.  I guess being able to start September is actually an up note when I think about it.

I wish all of you a better day as I know many of you are suffering from heat.  A tough Summer.  Even if you had a great day yesterday it doesn't hurt to have a better day.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Holly, WRI Bears - UPDATE August 30, 2016
30 August 2016
Print Email
The staff report on Tasha?s progress is encouraging, although we haven?t yet had Tasha and Lucky out together. Holly chases Tasha, but they make no sound and Holly is just trying to stay near Tasha who is running away. Holly relaxed while foraging
A very relaxed Holly on 8/29/16
My interpretation is that Holly would like to play with Tasha like she does with Lucky; but Tasha is wary of playing with big Holly, who may have played too rough with her.

The staff report says:

?Today Tasha was out at about 8:40 AM and Holly about 9:05 AM . Tasha continues to go to the back of the big enclosure and seems relaxed and enjoying herself in the same general area. Tasha was observed doing some serious stomp walking on the mound (behind Ted's enclosure) both today and yesterday. Yesterday Tasha stomp walked within about 25 feet of where Holly was digging her "mound" den. That started the chase...and into the woods the "girls" went.

Today during the 3 PM Behind the Scenes tour the entire group observed Holly chasing Tasha behind both Ted and Tasha's pen and on the back half of the mound. The wild den that Holly is working on is a big hit with visitors. They are very excited to see Holly actually digging it. They are also surprised that Holly did not have to be taught how to dig a den.

We did not hear any vocalizations during the chase on the mound. When Tasha came into her pen she went straight for the water tub to cool off. Tasha came back to her pen at 3:30 PM and Lucky was then let out. Lucky went straight for the pond.?

At the WRI, we received a nice email from a couple Black Bear Field Course participants about a bear encounter they had nearby that is similar to others we have heard about.

?Lynn and I (the honeymooners) really want to thank you for a great experience during our Bear Course Session we recently attended. We want to share some thoughts that we had & one of our real-time experiences during our stay there. Leading up to us signing up for the Bear Study course, we always wondered about possibly the bears becoming domesticated by being around you and other visitors. Our concern was satisfied when we encountered a bear during a walk one afternoon at the WRI. As we were walking and looking at the beauty of the area, we saw a bear heading on a path to the WRI center. We immediately stopped just to see what was going to happen. At first the bear had not seen us yet. He continued toward us until he was about 30 yards out, at that point I told Lynn that let's see what will happen when he discovers us, so I stepped out in the open. Wow, what a reaction, the bear looked up, looked away, looked up & then turned & ran very fast away from us until we lost sight of it. We continued our walk without seeing it again. We concluded that the bears have a comfort zone at the WRI lodge, but that is all. Away from that comfort zone the bear is a bear, acts like a bear & is not influenced by humans at all. We also saw this even in their comfort zone as they are still on alert at all times while in the immediate area of the WRI lodge. The experience we had and the people we met that share our same passion of the bears was priceless. Thanks for a great time & opportunity to be with and better understand the bears.?

Both bears and gulls seem to be in hyperphagia. Bears to go to bed, and gulls for migration. The gulls are making a run on bologna. The bears sniff it and pass it up.

Thank you for all you do.
