Braveheart looking out from her den.

I'm running on empty this morning.  Have no idea why I seem to have no energy.  Just one of those things that happens to us nonagenarians.

Wishes for a nice day for all.  Rain for those needing it (but not like Louisiana), Sun and mild for others.  Just a pleasant day.

Daily Updates
Tasha?s First Outing, Colleen, Mystery Bear Identified - UPDATE August 15, 2016
15 August 2016
Print Email
About 8:20 AM, Tasha had her first experience outside her pen in the big enclosure. As this 2-minute video shows, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LB6TInjJfI, she was cautious at first, then she began smelling the tips of branches and putting her nose to the ground along bear trails. Spot
2 year-old Spot, Summer's son
Eventually, Holly was released. The two had been making friendly gestures through the fence, but it turned into a chase in the big enclosure. Either Tasha was too cautious or Holly was too pushy. Whatever it was, Tasha ran back into her small pen. Here?s the 26-minute version of Tasha?s big adventure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNzrlLuTEeQ. Tomorrow, Sharon will repeat the procedure and we'll see what happens.

At the WRI, Colleens? cubs mixed with Samantha?s cubs for some interesting interactions. They were cautious but curious about each other with very little actual touching, keeping a white pine trunk between them most of the time. Here are two more ID pictures for Colleen?s cubs Luna and Dawn.

Kimani
Then, the mystery bear showed up. This time, upon seeing her full chest blaze we recognized her as Kimani, which is an American Indian word for butterfly?like her blaze. She has one male and one female cub. I remember her well. We saw her in the study area with two cubs 2 years ago, but when we came across her resting spot back in the woods, we found a third cub, a male, lying dead nearby. A conservation officer and I checked his carcass carefully. We believe he had been hit by a car and made it only as far as the resting place. The nearest paved roads were 0.65 and 0.85 mile away. The nearest gravel road was a quarter mile away.

Two-year-old Spot, son of Summer, put in an appearance today.

The pontoon ride today was on smooth water and a sunny sky that brought out reflections and colors we don?t always see?like the blue spectrum on the mallard?s speculum. The young bald eagle was out of the nest on a nearby branch.

A great day.

Thank you for all you do.

good morning jewelies! itis 65 here. weatherman well lady right now saying it will heat up today and hotter tomorrow and thurs then cool back down. be hot for my sister. looks like no playing our game yet again hosing down. at least i will have help. i do not have time to see that 26 min video hope to see it later on. still have mowing too do and got to go get gas. Tashas and hollys meeting went like i thought it might. but the next will go better and better. they have a lifetime to be friends. thank goodness that pos dnr can't touch them. would like too i am sure but can't touch this. Hope tasha will be friend with Ted too..maybe friends with benefits!

Hi JP! Good pic of braveheart. royals won last night beat the tigers. ian anderson pitched a good game 3-1. we are two games under 500 now. need tigers and cleveland to lose.

Hi Eaglette! I sure do wish you would some rain! Heart breaking to see those wildfires. here LA with terrible flooding and you so dry. It would be silly to try to have a garden with no water. i am happy to have given mine up. you are right i only have so many hours in the day. having to pick what i can do and hosing down and the girls and sweets more important than tomatoes. if corey was still here across the road i would have plenty of them if my mom was still here would have plenty of them. if i could remember to go to the farmers market in richmond early sat morning i would have some.     I do not understand the having to hunt something down and kill it and bring it home.makes me ill to even think that. really don't understand a state having such a pos DNR. don't get that all. still have not heard back from that dnr in mn i emailed doubt that i do. too bad people of MN don't march to the gov office and demand he fired that tom landwehr no rioting or burning like in wi which is stupid. just demanding a new dnr that actually cares for animals.

Hi Blschue! well your brother should be happy to get that dvr. that is alot of work you have done. i got tons of pictures that i would love to go through and scan. some of roxie so young and a young thin jim riding her and me young on tuco our trail riding days. my mom and family need to get them out of my closet under the stairs before those meeces have torn them up if not already. i caught a big one in my live trap earlier this morning. let it out behind the barn by the corral.

wow i got to go hi to all you guys!

75 with 82% humidity.  Wonder if the weather will end up doing something, seems like the type day a good thunder boomer could come though.

I remember the old junior high and if a person was lucky enough to have to be in a classroom that faced west in the afternoon it was awful and yes, opening windows didn't help.

What a super post Eaglette.  Well you always do good posts, but today was exceptional.  I love the ears on the little cubs  :D  I feel so bad for all the people in the states with the fires.  Horrible you don't get any rain, no wonder the state is alike a tinderbox.   :'(  "It is drier than a popcorn fart" I know the subject isn't funny, but great expression.  ;)

Wow what a project with the pictures blschue, but so neat you're doing this!

Your family in Baton Rouge still doing ok JP?  I have a niece whose mom lives in Lafayette, who know how the woman ever ended up down there (enough said).  So far she's been lucky, but many streets around hers are flooded.

The last I heard our weekend is supposed to be in the 70's and I so hope they are right!

RC.  She's obviously in a snowy day.

For cal'sbenefit it is Wednesday, "Hump Day", midweek, and I hope she, and all her critters, have a good one.

I do not limit that hope to her.  I wish the best of days to all.

Daily Updates
Tasha, Monarch, Another Mystery Bear - UPDATE August 16, 2016
16 August 2016
Print Email
Tasha did more exploring today and was less reluctant (only 15 minutes) to exit her secure pen. After an hour or so, she went back. Here?s a 5 minute video of her 20160816 MonarchRelease
Monarch emerges
hesitation about leaving her pen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veYwVH0a04I

Another Monarch emerged and was released today at the Bear Center.

At the WRI, another mystery female has appeared. This one has an injury to her left front ankle and mostly walks on three legs. We took photos to show other bear feeders in the area. Face-on four legs, her chest blaze is hardly visible; but standing with her chest more open, we see the whole blaze; which we think someone in the community will recognize.

The Black Bear Field Course participants must be exhausted. Most were up most of the night watching bears until 2 or 3 AM. But they are still going strong. Too much excitement. A wonderful time.

Thank you for all you do.
