8:32 to get that puzzle with the bulbs.  Very  often I am sitting watching TV and the phone will ring.  I will pick up the TV remote and put it to my face to answer the phone.  It does not work.

Hi, Jewelies! Boy, do we need rain! If I could just wring all the humidity from the air, we'd have enough. Unpleasant weather, for sure. Just finished Emilie Richard's new book When We Were Sisters. I'll bet all you guys who like to read would like it, too. I really like all her books. The grand leaves for college on Wed.--the start of a new era. After we retired, we were able to take her to preschool, then kindergarten and babysat during school vacations, so we've been blessed to be able to do all that stuff. When I was in school, we always started after Labor Day. When I was teaching, school started the 3rd week in August, then gradually got moved up to earlier & earlier. This year, some schools  around here started Aug. 2, some the 15th. All have ac, so that really helps, but Aug. has all but disappeared as a summer vacation month. It's all 180 days, no matter how you divide it. When I was teaching, I'd start working in my classroom Aug. 1--don't know what they do now. We're getting near the time when we start having foggy sort of cool mornings and hot days, causing school delays. We're just now getting tomatoes in the garden since planting was delayed because of all the rain. Mother Nature sure can be a mixed up, puzzling mess !!!!!!  (I could use some of those 7 bad words)   Stay safe, see you all tomorrow.

Daily Updates
Colleen, Fern, Tasha - UPDATE August 14, 2016
14 August 2016
Print Email
I actually spotted Colleen first but didn?t know it. Thinking about projects, I arrived at work a little after 3 AM and saw a bear I didn?t recognize. She had the shape of a female. I poured her some sunflower seeds. Dawn - Colleen's cub
Dawn - Colleen's cub
Seeing how calm she was, I knew she was familiar, but I couldn?t place her. In the dark, I didn?t notice the distinctive ear with a piece missing. I felt for signs of her reproductive status and found she was lactating. A puzzle.

Colleen's cub Mary

The group arrived. As we finished lunch, Mike spotted Colleen with her obvious ear. We didn?t know how her cubs would react, so we stayed inside to learn their sexes. Through the big window, one person or another caught glimpses of special hairs. All three cubs are females. Along the way, Colleen got on the scale?only 216.5, but her cubs are a good size. We wondered where she?d been. The cubs were easy to tell apart by their faces and blazes. One with a blaze like a half moon had the most beautiful face--such contrast between the dark and light parts of her muzzle and her eyebrow patches. Someone suggested the name Luna. Another had a less distinctive face but a big, bold blaze. The brightness made someone suggest the name Dawn. The largest cub had no blaze but had a nice but non-distinctive face that overall struck us as cute. Someone suggested Mary. The names stuck.

Dawn   Mary   Luna
Then a call came. A mother with 3 cubs at a feeding station might be Jewel?s 4-year-old daughter Fern. We piled in the van. By the time we arrived at 2:30 PM, a situation had developed. Fern and her cubs had been eating peacefully until Curtis arrived. Fern went after him and ran him up a big red pine. In the commotion, Braveheart and Donna, who had just appeared, split fast and were not seen again. Curtis and Fern's 3-hour standoff
Curtis and Fern's 3-hour standoff
Fern?s nervous cubs sought safety up the wrong tree?the same red pine Curtis was in. Fern climbed after Curtis, a yearling, who found himself in a bad situation. Fern had him trapped out on a branch with nowhere to go. She wouldn?t let him down the tree past her cubs. Most of the vocalizations were from Curtis as he clacked his jaws in fear, huffed, and gave submissive moans of fear. The cubs fell asleep on their branches. After a half hour, Fern felt confident enough to turn away from him and fall asleep?still blocking his exit. We left. The landowner called a few hours later to say the family finally came down about 5:30 PM and left, but Curtis was still up there on the branch 45 minutes later. I don?t know what time he came down. Yearlings spend a lot of time in the safety of trees.

Who is Curtis? He?s the motherless cub we talked about last year. The community took him under their wing and made sure he had enough food to make it through the winter. He?s turned into a beautiful bear, big for a yearling, and fitting well into the social structure?except for today.

The group is a mix of Minnesotans and international travelers. One man has put on 76,000 miles of air travel so far this year as part of his job. Another is from England, her second time here, and the longest distance traveler is from New Zealand, her second time here. Fern falls asleep

They all follow the updates and the backgrounds of the bears. Through it all, we found a lull to squeeze in 3 short presentations. Fun group.

A big event is scheduled for Tasha at 7:30 AM tomorrow. Curator Sharon Herrell will lock Lucky in his pen and let Tasha out to roam the big enclosure and possibly interact face to face with Holly with no fence between. The time seems right. Tasha and Holly have been interacting in friendly ways through the fence, so it seems safe to broaden Tasha?s world.

Thank you for all you do.

Cal, how cool that Rose is a California girl! Lots of info in that brand! That is so neat to find out all that stuff about her!  Poor Curtis stuck out on a limb while all the others took a nap! Glad he finally got down! Cute cub pics! This morning it was cloudy and only 73 so I got my battery operated hedge shears out and went out front to trim the 5 barberry bushes. I got one trimmed and my battery went dead! I was so mad! Now it's hot and sunny out and I don't want to do any trimming! We got a tiny bit rain yesterday evening but not enough to fill my rain barrel back up. The way the rain came from the north west it totally missed my tomato plants because they are planted against the side of the garage. I want cooler temps and rain to come. Am I ever satisfied? Lol! I hope everything goes ok when Amy cleans out the forum! I always lose posts then. Never can get to 2000! Guess I need to post more often! Lol!

Jp, cutest bear greeting this morning! That little bear didn't look like he was enjoying his bath at all!

Obsver,  how wonderful that you and Mr O were so involved in your grand's growing up. That's something she will remember her entire life. My mom played a big in part in Robin's life. She was her only babysitter. Whatever Robin wanted her mamaw would get it for her! She spoiled her rotten. They spent so much time together.

Hi Nora! How's Chester?

8:32 to get that puzzle with the bulbs.  Very  often I am sitting watching TV and the phone will ring.  I will pick up the TV remote and put it to my face to answer the phone.  It does not work.
Now THAT sounds like things I've done JP!  :)

I just looked to see when our schools start this year, it's Aug. 24th, next week already.  I think we we used to go a half day before Labor Day to find out where our classrooms were and make a list of anything we needed for each teach.  Then we started fully right after Labor Day.  Gee LD isn't until the 5th of September this year.  I remember I'd get my new school clothes and since it was for fall they were warmer and then we'd have some real hot weather.  :D

I hope you get some rain Obsver.

I see Donna has crumbs on her mouth and I don't see a napkin.  Shame on her  ;)  Mary DOES have a cute face.  I loved that, Fern fell asleep with her back to Curtis, but was blocking his way.  And before Fern and Curtis were settled the cubs fell asleep on their branches  :D

I hope it goes well with Tasha and Holly.

It's 77 and humidity 67.  Some clouds are helping.

My dog got his face "washed" for 5:33.

Hello Jewelies!

It is hot here.  92F and expecting to get to 94 by 5pm.  In fact, it won't get below 80 til after midnight.  It is a scorcher, feels hotter than 92 too.  Well I just was misinformed cause weather underground tells me it is 95.2F now with a feels like 100F.  That sounds more like it feels to me and explains the 80F at midnight too.

We have not had any rainfall since the beginning of May, if that is what you want to call it, cause the almanac states we had 0.09 inch of rainfall for the whole month then.  I don't recall any rainfall, but it must be true.  It is drier than a popcorn fart and that is why we are literally burning up in our wild fire state of California.

I did not plant my garden this year cause it has been so dry and we have been on water restrictions.  It would be silly for me to try to keep everything from wilting with this heat this summer.  I sure have noticed the price increases at the local farmers market and at the grocers too.

Just checked my old school district and see that they are starting on Sept 6 for half day, with the 7th as the first full day.  That is how it was when I went to school there.  Always started the day after Labor Day then too.  The first day was more of a meet and greet, getting your school supply list and books, etc.  Last day of school was always mid June; same for 2017 being June 16th.  I think we had 180 calendar days each year that we needed to attend.  I don't know what the amount is now, but probably close to the same days.

My three children had different starting dates, seemed like every year.  Some years it was early August, others, mid August, then late August and some years right after Labor Day.  As a working Mom, I hated the early starts cause that always meant that during the year the kids would get more days off school, which meant I had to find someone to watch them.  LOL  This year the district started today.  That explains why the neighborhood is quiet  ;D

I sure liked that photo of Mary.  She is a cutie!  You know what has caught my attention on all the bear photos is the difference in the size of their ears.  I mean I always looked at their noses and could tell that they were definitely different, but the ears are different too. Some have long ones and some have short rounder ones.  I do not understand why anyone would want to "hunt" the bear.  I understand if you live out in the wilderness and there is a bear that is getting too close for comfort; but not going out to look for them to kill them for no reason at all.  People have an odd way of appreciating nature.  Some go out to just observe nature and others want to hunt it down, kill it, bring it home.  I am an observer.  But I do like to fish; however, whatever I catch is either released or consumed at dinner.  Other than target practice, I have never shot anything alive.  Well, that one time I did shoot a cactus but that cactus attacked me first!!   :D

Cal, you should really consider printing to PDF or paper all of your posts; cause they are a treasure trove of information as to how you live your life.  Could make a paperback book out of all your posts.  Kind of like that book Bridget's Diary.  Except instead of your sexcapades it will be your ranch/farm=capades.

OK, I have "spoken" enough now.  Enjoy the rest of whatever is left of your day and consider yourselves all appreciated by the Eaglette!!

Jewelies, we did get some rain today, but not nearly enough. More rain expected tomorrow, though. The inside cats are sitting all around me, staring like waiting vultures. I feed them the last meal right before I go to bed,?? they get a little impatient. Felt bad for the little one having to sit way out on the branch. Sure glad he didn't fall! Doesn't seem possible that Fern is that old!
