I think that quack doctor was pretty good.  He told me he did not know what was causing my pain in 5:22.  That was quicker (or is it quacker) than the other doctors I have seen told me that same thing.

willi, if they got them to put transmitters on then they should know their sex.  Have you heard anything about that?

Hi Peras,
I just discovered that we now have both Eaglets transmitted!  How exciting, this will possibly reveal how two males disperse and where they each travel to.  Some good research on their travels are a possiblility.
Thanks for the RRP post.

Braveheart's cub reminds me a bit of Chester  :D

Cal, do you soak Rose's foot in Epsom salts?  That really helps draw anything else out and they're cheap.  That's what I was told to use on my Morgan's abscesses.

Blschue how neat to go to the North Pole!!!

Geeze, 8:30 PM and the dew point is 69%, humidity 70%, temp. 80 feels like 83.  I watered the potted plants on the porch and the sweat was just running down and hair all wet.  Storms last night - I bit NW of us they had trees down and bad wind.  We had some wind, not as bad as that, and got 1 1/2 inches of rain in a short time.  No hail.  When that rain came down, it came down!!

JP I hope the MRI tells something.  Did they have ANY ideas?  Glad what they gave you seems to be helping.

Lily

Ear plugs this morning in the MRI machine.  I did not take the Hydrocodon this morning as they said I should not take it if I have to drive and I need to drive to the hospital at 10.  I am getting used to moving slowly with a minimum of pain-making activity.  But every once in a while, Zowee!

I wish all good things for everyone, this Thursday.

Daily Updates
Busy Day at the Bear Center - UPDATE July 6, 2016
06 July 2016
Print Email
Today staff and volunteers hung a variety of 14 birdhouses around NABC property. They are mounted along the tree line and are ready for spring occupancy.Ted with watermelon

Thanks to all who sent us birdhouses; we can?t wait to see them occupied in the spring.

Tasha enjoyed her boat bumper enrichment toy today. A Lily Fan caught all the action on video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRMcLawoqzM.

Our intern, Kara, provided an interesting update on the Striped Fishing Spider today.

On June 18th, 2016, a spider was found on a wooden display in front of the fish tank in the Northwoods Ecology Hall. The spider was then shooed into a critter container by two summer interns. The gender and specific species of the spider were unknown at this point. We did not know what kind of hunter this spider was or what it preferred to eat, but the spider ate two live crickets when they were offered to it later that day.

The spider was fed two crickets every other day for the next six days. On the morning of June 26th, it became clear to us that our spider is a female. Sometime after closing time the previous day she had constructed a very small web in the corner of the container and in the middle of that, a large white egg sac. She was sitting very still with her abdomen inserted in the middle of this sac. She was laying her eggs. After almost a half hour, she finished laying her eggs and began to close up the egg sac opening with silk produced from her spinnerets. The truly surprising and fascinating part of this was that she was using multiple strands at a time and luckily we were able to catch this on video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFHJduKu5fU.

We checked on her approximately an hour and a half after we saw her closing her egg sac, she had cut her egg sac out of her web. She rolled the sac in to a tight sphere and was holding it under her body with her jaws and a few strands of silk from her spinnerets. She is still carrying this with her everywhere in order to protect her eggs. She will hold it until the spiderlings emerge, meaning she will also not be eating again until then. Here is a video of her carrying her egg sac. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XITi_m7HF-U.

We have identified her as a striped fishing spider (Dolomedes scriptus), but have not yet settled on a name for her. As the species name suggests, fishing spiders hunt small fish, tadpoles, and an assortment of insects. Due to this stalk and ambush hunting lifestyle, striped fishing spiders don?t make or use webs except to have and nurture their young. These semi-aquatic spiders live near the water and hunt sitting on the surface of the water. They can dive and remain underwater for as long as 30 minutes.

Miss Spider has now been carrying her egg sac for 11 days and we are anxiously awaiting the appearance of her spiderlings. We are currently uncertain as to how long this process takes, but we have taken precautions in preparation for this occasion. To ensure that her 1,000 or more little spiderlings can?t escape from the many small openings on her container, we have stretched some fine mesh material across its top. Our research tells us that after the spiderlings emerge, they will be protected in a nursery web for about a week before they disperse.

Stay tuned; we will keep you updated on her progress.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies! It's hot outside! And humid! We got our yard work finished early this morning, 10:30! The grass was wet from the rain last night but we mowed it anyway because it was cloudy out! Sun is supposed to come out this afternoon and get really steamy! Rain coming tomorrow. Ah, summertime!

Cal, Miss Spider is very interesting!  And the bird houses are very nice! I have 4 bird houses hanging but only one is inhabited. I think Crow made the entry holes too big. Sweet pic of Ted and his watermelon. I love watermelon!  Hope the stormy weather has passed by and your power didn't go out! Good news about your generator coming today! Hope CA has power now! Too hot outside to not have AC! That's so funny what you said about Polly's coughing and smoke another one because my older sis always says that when she hears someone coughing like that!

Jp, hope your MRI went well and it shows what is ailing you!

Hi Nora and Blschue! How cool that you visited the North Pole, Blschue! I forget what the filters you sew are used for!  I seem to forget a lot lately! Lol!

Bbl!

I don't handle spiders well, especially big ones.  I can watch videos and cringe a bit, but know they can't crawl on me.  Those spiders HUNT FISH!  Whoa.

81 feels like 84, dew point 68, humidity 65%.  For some reason it feels worse than that.  We had 1 1/2 inches of rain night before last and last night another inch.  LOTS of thunder & lightning.  Guess it was around 3 this morning.

Sorry to hear some have/had their power out, guess we've been lucky.

Cal, just asking, not saying you should/shouldn't, but does Rose get much grain?  When Stormy had abscesses I had to cut any grain back to almost none, just enough to give her any medicine in.

Hi Rues! ca and jean jean got their power back on two hours ago. out for awhile for them still have not brought the generator. it is coming by holland freight i think a big truck. hope it can get thru our gate area and up the driveway.jim be home soon hope he gets here before they do. that spider is interesting she is. last summer i had a huge garden spider she or he made their web right outside the slider door to the barn where i go out to dump poop buckets. every time a grasshopper jumped into that web i beat that spider out and saved it. told that spider move somewhere else. finally it got tired of me and did. saw my huge black snake by my barn. he is looking for mice. i decided today next female cat that shows up here i will catch her and take her to the animal shelter in richmond. they are next door to dr stewart animal clinic he spays and tutored them. they are a no kill shelter and seem to find good homes for them pretty quick. i just can not take any cat. did not want anymore so bad i did not. no more dogs either. happy to have that gate shut no dogs get up to the driveway anymore. i would like to go to the ozarks with jim for his ford deal next week but i can't. can't even go to susies. hope i am around to take care of the kittens when they get old. just too many animals for me.

Hi Nora! rose gets half a coffee can of enrich plus in the morning and some at night. soda has to has that grain cause of her being diabetic. i use to give them all stock but now everyone gets the enrich plus. sweets too.. maybe i should cut it down. you say it causes abscesses? i know a spider that hunts fish. i would have to have a net and catch them fish and tell miss spider move it somewhere else...please..

Hi Jewelies!  :)

Our power didn't go out at all, I was surprised. But the wind was wild!! There were lots of small limbs down around the mobile home park when I went out to go to the doctor. They keep the trees trimmed up pretty well so we don't get a lot of big limbs down.

Went to the doctor this morning; she ordered more tests and did another EKG. Seeing the hematologist on Monday so maybe one of them can figure out why I feel so awful. My cardiologist doesn't agree with the hematologist about when I should have more blood or iron. My blood was a little too thin this morning. I'm just "too pooped to pop"!! My dad used to say that all the time.

I was watching the Katmai cameras the other day. Since the temps are only in the 50s, how cold do you think that water is? It looks like a good way to get cool!

I got this screen shot of Mei Lun & Mei Huan the other day. The one by the door has her head in a water dispenser!

I don't know which one of the twins this one is, but she is sure cute. This was posted on Facebook.

I didn't know people ever had porcupines as pets, but this little video is sure cute. His name is Teddy Bear. I had no idea they are so vocal.

This video is of Bei Bei bugging his poor mom. I bet she wishes he had someone else to play with.

Hi to JP, Cal, Obsver, Ra, Rues, Willi, Nora, Neva, Blschue, Eaglette, Deb, Pat, Chippy. I hope you are all keeping cool and out of storms for awhile. I'm going to go take a little nap. The storm woke me up very early!  :)
