Lucky you have your tongue sticking out!  :D  JP I hope that pain isn't anything serious and am glad you're willing to go get it checked out, I agree if there is pain there is a reason and too many people would stay home and not try to find out.  Hugs and hope you're ok!!

There are SO many baby birds getting fed.  Right now we're on the grackle streak of parents/babies, which should be over soon.  I can't believe the birdseed they go through, but they'll head for the fields soon now that some babies are coming on their own and not screeching for food.  Then I'll go back to better birdseed.

I hope Rose isn't real bad Cal, it's so hard watching a horse you know has a sore foot.

Have and fun and safe day today!!

Hope all you Jewelies are having a nice holiday! It's been raining off and on here today.  :( More rain coming this evening, too. Robin's plane from D.C. is scheduled to land at 7pm, so hoping the weather cooperates! Last night it sounded like a battle zone around here. Seemed like everyone set off fireworks! Our wise (not!) legislators passed a new law last month that allows the common person to purchase all sorts of dangerous fireworks against the pleas from fire and police officials not to do it! I bet there will be lots of people getting hurt. Poor Molly was petrified.  :(

Cal, gee, hope your rain is over. Poor Rose with her sore foot and a wet barn and all that added work for you. Oh my gosh, those kittens are adorable! Mama, too! Boo Boo is huge! No wonder he can knock you down! Funny about Scootie getting that tiny Milkbone! Lol! I remember when Molly was a puppy and she ate that size. Now she and Boo eat the ones for large dogs!

Jp, how awful for you to still be in pain after spending all that time in the ER! How frustrating.  Did they tell you to take the meds that the urgent care gave you? Maybe you should call your family doctor. Wish we  were near you and could keep you company.

Cal, I was happy it was raining last night because I figured the neighbors wouldn't set off those fireworks again. Even though the city fireworks display was cancelled till tonight, the neighbor's still set theirs off! This time Molly got into the basement closet! Poor doggy. I hope it won't be a repeat tonight. Because of the storms from here to D.C., Robin's plane was a half hour late. She said the turbulence was scary especially being in that small plane. Boo has no trouble taking any med. He will eat anything. But I have to hide Molly's meds in a big glob of soft cream cheese. Hope the vet can come see Rose today or soon!

Ra, I hope you get back online soon! We miss you!

Nora, Chester is a very good dog to stay next to you off leash! Molly and Boo would be long gone, that's for sure! Nice that you ate with your neighbors! No one in my neighborhood does things like that. Used to be that I knew everyone but most have died now. New people have moved in and just aren't friendly. All you can get out of them is a "Hi".

Bbl!

Rues, that is the only dog I've ever had the stayed by me like that.  Part of it might be a security issue if he was dumped or whatever.  I can't move in the house without him up and right with me.  They talk about dogs needing their "space", people do too!!!  :D  Of course other dogs I've raised from pups, maybe it's my training ;)

Cal does Rose get abscesses?

JP I'm sorry you're hurting so much, wish there was something I could do!!  I was reading up on stuff and like Willi said, kidney stones can cause groin pain.

It's 83, feels like 86, but you just walk a few steps outside and the sweat just runs, it's awful out.  They say maybe storms later today.

Hi Nora! i was on my out to the barn and dr harris called. she said sounds like a stone bruise yes an abscesses rose had this before. dr. harris said what i am doing  is fine she said my farrier should trim it back so it can drain. you know jill first asked me who my farrier was told her i was not happy with him last time. he did not trim it back at all or trim their hooves very well. i had jim trim them up well roses. so i will asked jill who she uses and try him. got to have that done right. i asked dr harris where it would be she said oh it can be on the side in the middle by the hairline so i am going out there and trying to see if can see it. will it be a raised bump cause she has one right in the middle like. can i trim it with a little knife you think?  it is awful here too. i got my electric bill was dreading that. i looked at the first one jims shop 35.00 and then peeked at the house like that would make it cheaper! 285.96! even having my power off half a day there awhile back. lake one was 44.00 good jim doesn't have time to go down there. susie is only 14.00 everything turned off there. i send 140.00 so no bill for a year.

Cal, when my sis lived in AZ she kept her house cooled with a cooler. She likes it better than an AC. I'm confused on how they work. That would be great if you can get one for the barn. Seems everyone is out of the office this week! Must be because of the holiday. But it sounds like you are doing the right thing for Rose. She doesn't mind you messing around with her foot? Molly has had problems with her foot pad and she growls at me when I try to look at it.  Your electric bill really doesn't sound that bad. I'm on what they call the budget plan. I pay $101.00 monthly year around. Our pool pump and AC really use a lot in the summer but in the colder months we don't use as much. So they average out the bill. Once a year or so they adjust the monthly payment up or down. Works out pretty good. We have our natural gas bill on the budget plan, too.  It has been miserable outside today. Not too hot, only 80, but the humidity is horrible. Boo didn't want to go outside to the bathroom! I had to make him go! Lol!

Nora, I know all about needing your own space! I always wanted Molly to cuddle and sleep with me. She wanted nothing to do with that! Then Boo came to live with us. I was so excited when he started sleeping with me. Just what I had been wanting! A dog that cuddles and sleeps with me! But I soon found that he is a bed hog. Some nights I end up sleeping on the edge of the bed because he likes to sleep in the middle of the bed! It's hard to make a 100 pound dog move! Lol! I saw on the news that there were some bad storms up your way. Hope they passed you by!

Hope everyone is having a nice evening!

Braveheart and a cub

The shot the doctor gave me, a relaxant, the Hydrocodon, the Prednisone he prescribed, all seem to have lessened the pain.  I am also to get an MRI of the lower spine tomorrow.

I'm going to be all right but in the meantime,  OUCH!

My hopes go out to all for a good Wednesday.

Holly on alert
Holly on alert
Bear News ? July 5, 2016

Happy 4th! The fireworks in Ely were loud and colorful. I wondered if the bears could hear them so I drove to the center last evening and watched briefly. Yes, I suppose they heard the boomers. The staff opened the cabin bear gates just in case the bears needed the safety of a den earlier in the evening.

This past weekend the staff made good forward movement with Holly and Tasha.
Holly has been asserting herself as the dominant female by slapping the ground, straddling small brush, and huffing at Tasha. In return Tasha runs to the other side of the bunkers and huffs.

Ted's watermelon treat

The trick to peace. The staff is treating both bears equally. The same attention from caregivers is so vital in bringing peace between the two females. They are now sitting in close contact with the fence between them and eating treats. Only time will tell if this progress will continue but we have given the two a chance to work things out by providing each with good words and treats. Let's keep our fingers crossed. As we also know there is a hierarchy in the bear world and Holly will always be the older female.

There are rare moments when Holly's ears stand up. In the posted picture Holly is listening to folks on the trail and she is very attentive.

Today, the Interns created some new enrichment tools for the bears. They waded into the pond and put food on Lucky?s floating tree. They also hung bags of food for the bears to do some take-away treats. Holly also climbed the Pat tree investigating the treats on the bird feeder.

It is a hot day and all the bears have been swimming. Tasha has a small pool in her den and it is refilled several times a day. On hot days Ted receives many showers and sits in his small pool. He also gets his favorite half watermelon decorated with frozen grapes. This wonderful bear is served his mouth-watering treat.

July will soon host the Lilypad picnic, WRI courses, and the Blueberry Festival. It?s an exciting month to visit the NABC and Ely.

Thank you,
Sharon Herrell, Bear Curator

Thank you for all you do,

Good morning jewelies! another very hot and humid day heat advisory out. it is 80 now and humidity is 82%. Teds treat looks really good and love reading how well them bears are taken of. keep them cool in water too like i do here for mine. holly will always be the older one and she is. but hoping she knocks it off and realizes tasha would be a good friend. i hope tasha will let ted be her friend.

Hi JP! love the pic of braveheart and her kid. looks like mom cat with her kittens licking them. Really happy your pain has lessens! good getting an mri hope it pinpoints what is going on and they can fix it. royals lost again to blue jay. wade davis our machine is on the disable list now for a forearm sprain be out for 15 day. i was hoping to see him when we go to the game. hard to imagine i can go to that game. if it is really hot hate to leave the girls and sweets with no hose down and sister no she can't do that. she will be doing good to watch the dogs.

Hi Blschue! pretty cool went to the north pole and that wild game place. you got alot of sewing too do! i guess mr bill can't help you there. we are suppose to get storms tonight. i was late today and trying to hurry here i went ahead and soaked roses foot this morning and put on that koppertox and i let them out. some really happy girls i tell you. rose walking with a little limp but much better. it is still muddy in the corral some but i will treat and soak it later. they will be back in for the fans right now they can go out. i have to run to walmart in richmond i really need to mow the dogs yard today at least trying to hurry before it gets to 110. i am going to try to get at least one of those portable cooler buy another one next year. i think i will have to set it in there with them. put it next to the big huge fan against the back of sweets stall. it has to be blowing on them for the coolness to work that and that fan should really help them. that will take a load of stress off of me. sweets has the side door open it faces the north and the west sliding open and two fans on him.

i just have to go hi to all you guys
