Here's Ted this morning.

I've had one of those tossing and turning, can't sleep nights.  Got up once and tried to read but couldn't concentrate, tried watching TV - nothing.  I hate that when it happens.

I hope all of you Jewelies had a better night and can greet Monday with some spirit.

Daily Updates
Ted, Holly, Sophie, Ellie, Spanky, Heat - UPDATE May 22, 2016
22 May 2016
Print Email
Ted knew how to deal with this 81? day?squirm around in the creek, put water on his head as we?ve seen wild bears do, lounge awhile, and then exit wet, Spanky
Spanky, Shadow's male yearling
looking lean but not mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVc_lega_V4.

Holly was digging at her old den from a couple years ago, which reminds us of June digging an early den on July 19, 2004 when she was also three. June went ahead and had cubs in hers that winter.

The team narrowed the identity of the ?Sophie? we wrongly identified on the 18th to one bear?Ellie. People have been asking about Ellie. Now we know. Ellie is three and beautiful and will likely have cubs next year. She has such a sweet personality, I look forward to introducing Black Bear Field Course participants to her this summer. As a cub, she was always more calm and confident than her brother Eli who would be high in a tree when Ellie had decided it was safe to descend and be with her mother Lily in 2013.

Eli, who visits the WRI is friendly once he knows it is safe. His main concern seems to be other bears and people who he doesn?t know. When he is not certain, he has a habit of taking a big mouthful of food to the base of a big white pine to eat in total safety while looking around a lot.

Ellie, by contrast, has the serene look she gave me for the picture in the update of May 18 that I?d like to blow up for an upper wall in the Bear Center. When I took that picture, she was eating nuts at a feeding station and didn?t even bother to look up when the owner came out the door and walked quickly to her and dumped more. She?d been through that routine many times.

This is a community that loves wildlife. I heard a story today of a Lily Fan who visited and ended up petting a wild flying squirrel to feel the ultra-soft fur.

Today I got a jolt when I got a call about an orphaned cub in the neighborhood. Word somehow spread. When I got there, a resident was leaving, having identified the bear as yearling Spanky, newly separated from his mother Shadow. Spanky is easily identified by the light fur that loops over each eye like spectacles. The white seeds on his nose are sunflower seed hearts. The people who called love bears.

I?m glad to be part of this community that loves nature.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning jewelies! it is 63 here. I knew dr rogers would figure out which bear that was. how cool to feed the bears. dr. rogers is lucky to live in a community that loves nature so much such a shame his DNR does not.

Hi JP! Love the Ted picture! Sorry you had a hard night sleeping. i got to bed late jim and someone else working on our power pole by the house. i could not go to bed till they were finally done. replacing a heavy wire that goes under the ground up to our pole and into the box there. backhoe and everything. went out there this morning and of course left a big mess for me to clean up. grrr. like i don't have enough to do and he still isn't up got to get him up. hope you have a good day.

gotta run hi to all you guys!

The SOAR gang has been very busy but we have made it through the many spring programs and patient admits! Kay has been working with Decorah too, (in addition to caring for patients and doing programs) and here he is looking handsome on 21 May in his weathering area.

Gee Ted looked tired this morning.  JP we should have gotten together and gone and watched the moon over the ocean or something.  I went to bed and was totally awake and would doze off and then wake up.

Decorah the  eagle looks great!

It's 80 this noon, windy, and that mile walk with the kid was really warm.  Not sure what that line of rain is going to do.  We could use some, but not storms.

Hi Jewelies!  Must have something to do with the full moon... I finally got to sleep around 2am and woke up at 4am...  couldn't go back to sleep, and hat to get up at 4:50am.  Guess we're a sleepy bunch today!  lol  I have to go pick up my oldest grand at cheerleading practice in a few minutes... her mom is "tennis/walking/sneaker shoe shopping.   ;)

cal... Thanks for posting the pic of our young ambassador, Decorah.  He sure is pretty!  Why did Jim have to replace that big wire?  Spanky looks a little thin... hope he can find food on his own out in the woods, but glad the community helps them!  Holly has gotten to be a big girl lately!  She looks so grown up now.  She's filling in and her legs don't look so long!  lol

nora... I would have been glad to watch the moon over the ocean with you and JP and I bet cal would have gone, too.

dlong... When I first switched over to AT&T Uverse, my internet used to go out almost every single Sunday, for no apparent reason.  Seems to have straightened itself out now.    I hope you're feeling better.  Why, in the world, do they need a spinoff of the Blacklist??  Doesn't make a lot of sense to me...  I was surprised to see Liz get kidnapped as soon as she showed up!  Geez.  I had a feeling she wasn't dead though.  Do you watch Blindspot, too?  Tonight is the season finale, previews look good.  Thanks for the pics!

obsver... I was going to say something about the crowed stores, but decided to be nice.  Rues taught me that.  lol

rues... Did you get all your plants planted?  It's pretty hot here today...

Hope all are having a good day!  Hi everyone!  BBL

Hi Jewelies!  :)

I do watch Blindspot, but I keep getting confused.

Internet is working much better today! I don't want to say it too loudly, it might hear me and stop working. However, I am behind on watching some shows on Netflix so I decided to watch it for awhile, but...... No one told my Roku that we had a new wifi router so it didn't know what to do and wouldn't connect with the internet. I tried all the usual stuff and then went online and found an article that fixed me right up! So I watched for awhile. I haven't started watching it yet, but there is a series on Netflix called "The Ranch" and my favorite guy is in it. I have always been crazy over him - SAM ELLIOT!! Here he is:

It rained a lot here and a little bit of hail; not very big and not for very long. Sounds like it's getting ready to storm again .

Gotta go; don't want to chance my internet messing up again.

Hi to everyone! Have a great evening and a restful night.  :)

Hi Jewelies! Nice day here today after thunderstorms last night! The storms came from the north and that always means they will be bad! The northern sky turned black and then reddish yellow! It was scary but not much wind or rain! There's a chance of rain everyday this week! Could reach 90 By the weekend!

Dlong, I love Sam Elliot! Ooo, he is so hot! Lol! Catrina is a beauty! Glad she found a forever home! Your kitties are so sweet! Robin cancelled her cable the other day. She rarely watches cable because she watches Netflix all the time. She loves it! She said the cable lady was very rude to her when she turned in her cable boxes. She'll be saving almost $100 a month! Hope you feel better! I'm with Ra...why do they need a Blacklist spin off?!

Ra, yep, got my flowers planted this afternoon! I didn't get them yesterday as I had planned because my younger sis asked if I wanted to go decorate graves instead. So we went on our annual trip back into the country! Our maternal grandparents cemetery was polluted with cicadas! They were every where! Climbing on monuments, fences and trees! Ewww! They were even in the porta potty!  :o This afternoon Crow and I went to Sam's to get dog food and after that we went flower shopping! He doesn't know one plant from another! Lol! Still looking for lantana!

Cal, nice pics from the bear center! Glad that Ellie and Eli have been seen! Now need to see Aster! Thanks for the pic of Decorah! What a beauty!

Nora, I read that squirrels eat baby birds! How awful. Guess that's just nature. But it sure can be cruel.  Does Chester get hot walking in the heat? I would love to have river rock instead of mulch but it would cost me a fortune! I think the rock looks so good!

Jp, I don't know why but I've been having trouble getting to sleep at night. I just toss and turn and finally fall asleep. Then I yawn all day long!  You can tell  in that pic that Ted is a gentle bear!

Obsver, I saw that crowed but I said nothing! Lol!

Blindspot tonight! Hope you all have a nice evening! And hope we all can go to sleep instead of tossing and turning! Lol!

Donna, her Yearlings, Spanky and Radio Interview - UPDATE May 23, 2016
23 May 2016
Print Email
Donna is now on the radar. She was seen with only three yearlings. She started with four cubs (two big, two small) and was seen with all four last fall right up to the last time Spanky (Shadow's male yearling)
Spanky (Shadow's male yearling)
she was seen on September 23 (2015). Now, on her first sighting of 2016 today, one of the big cubs is missing. Since it is close to family break-up, it is possible one of the big cubs is feeling independent enough to be temporarily separated. Donna has given birth to 19 cubs in her 16 years and counting.

Here is a link to a radio clip from a Delaware interview a few days ago. It?s 4 minutes and 38 seconds long at http://delawarepublic.org/post/black-bear-sightings-spark-interest-trends-population-growth-relocation-efforts#stream/0

Spanky is still creating smiles in the community. A happy resident sent this picture of him.

Thank you for all you do.
