Hi Jewelies!  Finally... we got a little bit of rain today.  No storms... yet.  They're supposed to be on the way.

cal... I hope you're having a blast today!  And, that the weather stayed nice, too.  How were the dogs?  Did they behave?  I know... fat chance!  lol  I can't wait to hear about your day!  How in the world did someone steal that statue off the billboard??  People.   ???  88,000 miles on his old truck??  What year was it?  Seems like he just got it!  I've had mine for 3 years and don't even have 18,000 miles on it!  lol  Guess I don't get out much.  lol   Sure would be nice if they can use that pic of Honey that's in today's update.  Very pretty!

blschue... Sorry you were sick and couldn't go to the party.  Bummer.

JP... I hope you got over your dizziness today!  Did you ever figure out why that happened?

I hope everyone is doing good.  Hi everyone!  See me waving?   :D

Oh, cal!  You had so much fun!  And, covered with mud!  lol  I'm glad you didn't go in the deep water!  It's so nice that you had a fun day... you work so hard, you deserve to have fun!  Thanks for staying up and telling us about your day!  I've been thinking about you.  Glad someone brought back the billboard guy.  Yes, Clemson had a bunch of guys in the draft... the most ever, I think I heard.  See you tomorrow!

It's Sunday so lets have a day of rest.  Except cal can't because she always has so many to take are of and other work.

Daily Updates
Bears - UPDATE April 30, 2016
30 April 2016
Print Email
Lily Fans are asking about grief among Ted, Lucky, and Holly. I?m not sure. Lucky and Holly spent a lot of time playing very near Honey at first, which is why Ted
Ted
we locked them up so they wouldn?t bother her. The last morning, Ted came over as close as he could be in his pen, about 8 feet away, but his attention seemed more toward the people than on Honey. I suspect he assumed everything was fine with her.

Honey's grave
Ted was out eating grass on the mound today and doing well.

The picture shows the grave location. We wanted it to be easy for Lily Fans to visit but not obtrusive to people who don?t know the bears like Lily Fans do. I like it that the spot is kept mowed and neat.

Many good ideas for mementos last night. Thank you. Not sure what to do. My mention of Honey being prominent in the calendar (like 42 pictures of her plus her story) led Lily Fans to ask if any calendars are left. Yes, hundreds. We over-ordered, and the pictures are terrific. They are mainly Jim Stroner?s super sharp pictures that capture the eyes or action, showing the lives of the four ambassador bears.

Victor      Victor
Victor
A nice thing last night was seeing Victor at WRI. I?d mentioned earlier that I was anxious to know he is still around. He was his same old self, very skittish until he understands that it is the old routine. He looks so torn up and rough but has a gentle demeanor underneath.

Thank you for all you do.

Jp, thanks so much for Imagine and for the beautiful May flower bouquet! You are the sweetest guy!

Cal, sounds like a you all had a great time yesterday! Glad the weather cooperated. I understand it is fun to ride 4 wheelers in the mud! Lol! Have a nice time at the grad party today!  My Hyacinth episode was the one where she decides they need to start looking for a country property. They go to Honeysuckle cottage and meet the care taker who mumbles and they can't understand a word he says. In the end a herd of sheep chase Hyacinth down the road. And Rose is writing her memoir and telling all!

Gotta go help put in the pool cleaner. Be back later!

Pretty May basket JP!  I remember growing up mom had an old wallpaper sample book and May 1st I'd pick out one I liked and make a basket to put a violet in that mom grew or something like that for a couple older neighbors.  :)

Nora...Thanks for the update on Joe!  I'm watching Dateline and the case they're showing was moved out of the family's hometown to Decorah!!  Do you remember it?  Her family owned a famous Iowa supermarket.  It's pretty recent...
RA I didn't see the show so not sure what case that was about.  I'll see if I can find it after while.

Nice grave for Honey.

Loved the dog making a dog door  :D

Spanky.  Shadow is his mother

The year is zipping by.  It is hard to believe that we are in May.   I am hoping it will be a good month for all you Jewelies.

Daily Updates
Bears and Birds - UPDATE May 1, 2016
01 May 2016
Print Email
Lily Fans are asking about signs of grief, signs that Honey is missed, and how behaviors have changed.

Bear Curator Sharon Herrell sent me this:

Holly checking out the window den
Holly in the window den by J. Runions
?I would like to address your last update. I would like our followers and members to know this information.
On Wednesday Ted sat by his fence and watched. He received attention from Cindy and staff. After Cindy left, Ted stayed by the fence but eventually went into his den to rest. He was at the fence gate when Lynn and I approached it. He was seeking attention from Lynn.
On Saturday, April 30, Ted walked over and investigated where Honey had laid for 8 days. April 20-28th, when she was buried. He spent about 10 minutes there.
Lucky and Holly had done the same but only to smell around and then leave.
Is Ted grieving? I would say he knows something is different . . .
As for Lucky, he went into the window den and sniffed around. Holly was very cautious passing in front of the den; perhaps waiting for the explosive response she had always gotten from Honey.
Yesterday, Holly was about 3 feet from Ted on the mound receiving some treats. When I went up by Ted, she immediately left the area. She is still not sure of herself around the big guy.?

Herring gull
Today, Holly?s caution about the window den changed. She apparently is confident that Honey is not around to chase her. A Lily Fan snapped this picture of Holly exploring Honey?s window den. It will be interesting to see who takes it over. Ted used to use it a lot. When he comes down to the pond, will he now use the window den as a place to rest rather than going back up to his pen?

Out the window, two gulls came and both will now take food from my hand?one readily and one on occasion. The herring gull shown is the cautious one that will only take food on occasion. A month ago, it flew away the moment I came out the door. I resist calling animals ?it?, but I don?t know how to tell the sexes of gulls.

A common grackle (Quiscalus quiscala) of the aptly named subspecies ?versicolor? stood in sunlight that brought out his colors. Grackles look black in poor light, but they light up in sunlight. This subspecies has a blue head, bronze back, and purple tail. Parts of the body go from dull black to brilliant color as they move.

Thank you for all you do.

Euthanized, try MURDERED!!!  A black bear was in Chattfield, MN (which is south of Rochester, MN) and they said they "euthanized".  This was their reasoning!  ""They made the decision to take this bear's life so that it wouldn't have the opportunity to go on and maul somebody, hurt somebody, or kill somebody," said Fillmore County Sheriff Tom Kaase."  :'(  >:(
