Faith.

willi, such a terrible thing to happen to Henry.  I so hope for him to get back to his home and things to return to normality.  I am praying for that.

cal, your orange preservation should work but, as a keepsake that you want to cherish, you will have to open the freezer to see it and remember bischue's giving it to you.

Willi, my heart hurts to hear what Henry & you are going through. How completely scary, and I know you are suffering right along with him. Hope he has a quick recovery.

Daily Updates
Victor - UPDATE April 18, 2016
18 April 2016
Print Email
Victor is a bear we haven?t mentioned much. He used to be beautiful. We first met him when he was 4-6 years old in 2005, he looked a lot like June?s striking son Cole. He was one of the most Victor on 6/30/14
Victor on 6/30/14
handsome bears we ever saw. He was gentle with people, but his face soon began to show that he was not afraid to mix it up with competing males in mating season. Now, in the pictures of him at age 14 at the end of mating season (June 30, 2014), his big eyebrow patches are obscured by scars. Not readily visible is the fresh slice on the right side of his nose pad, Victor on 6/30/14
Victor on 6/30/14
his torn upper lip, and his torn right ear. Under the fur of his head and neck there is ridge upon ridge of scar tissue.

Assuming he wins at least some of the mating battles, we think we are seeing the exceedingly handsome fruits of his endeavors. Did Victor sire Juliet?s litter that included her two female cubs Sybil and Sophie? Did Victor tangle with Big Harry to sire June?s son Cole? By 14, will Cole be as scarred as his possible father is? Are some of Victor's scars from Big Harry? When we first saw Victor last year, it was still mating season, and he was on a mission. He was not interested in food or a hello. When mating season was over, we saw him more. Just as in the pictures from June 30, 2014, he was hungry and gave me the impression he was glad the mating battles were over. He was his usual mellow self. We look forward to seeing a lot of him again this summer when he is 16 with new wounds to heal. Bear Course participants always enjoy meeting Victor and being amazed that this battling giant is a calm, mellow bear with humans in this safe haven.

With only 10 slots to fill, we opened an additional course for July 31-August 3 to hold an additional 8 participants.

Black ice
A Lily Fan asked what black ice is (from last night?s update). To me, it is the color ice turns before it disappears. I looked it up on Wikipedia. It didn?t mention that. It is simply thin ice that takes on the color of the depths instead of reflecting the sky. The ice is colorless, as usual, it is just thin enough to see through in the day or two before it melts completely.

Snowshoe hares are now turning brown for summer.

Thank you for all you do.

Oh no Willi!  I wish it hadn't been a Pit that did it, there are a lot of good ones out there, it could have been any dog.  A neighbor's G. Shepherd chewed the tail off my lab/redbone mix and got kicked off of her and then went for her throat.  I managed to reach a rake and clobbered him with the handle and he went home.  His folks paid too.  She looked like a dog that gets its tail docked after that.  My MAIN CONCERN is little Henry.  I hope he comes through this ok.  :'(  I'm sorry for Jerry too, how awful for him too.  Hugs you guys.

Geeze 79 yesterday and 50 today.  What a change, but that's ok, good walking now that the rain stopped.

Cal about the orange, are you keeping it because it was a gift from a special friend and you hate to eat it?  Will a tree grow from any of the seeds?

Awww I like Victor, he looks like a neat old bear.  He gets to me like when you see a beat up old Tom cat.  :)

Hi Jewelies!  Going to be hot today and we're in the beginnings of a drought... again.  Hasn't rained much this spring.

willi... How's Henry doing?  Is he still at the vet?  Poor thing.  And like Nora said, I feel bad for Jerry, too.

cal... Always such nice pics in the updates!  Thanks for bringing them here for us every day!  And, thanks for the shames and puzzles, too.  I'm anxious to hear which bears they see this month...

Hi Nora, JP, obsver, rues, and everyone else, too!  Have a good day!

Willi ~  I feel so bad about what has happened to Henry ... and I feel angry too.  They ought to demand that that Pit Bull wear a good strong muzzle if he ever goes back there again.  Henry is in our prayers here at my house ... I told my daughter and granddaughter about this too.

Cal ~  Think of that orange as a bit of Arizona Sunshine that blschue shared with you.

Braveheart with either Geneva, Stratton or Porter.

I am going to have to get my act together.  Right now it seems to be all over the place.

Wishes for a good Wednesday to all.

Daily Updates
Bears! Birds, and Blossoms - UPDATE April 19, 2016
19 April 2016
Print Email
I received the first community bear sighting today?14-year-old Braveheart and her 3 yearlings (Geneva, Stratton, and Porter). Good news. They showed up at one of Braveheart and her cubs
Braveheart and her cubs pay a visit
the community feeding sites where the landowner snapped a picture of Braveheart?s signature chest patch.

Deer face
I checked Lily?s den and she and her 3 cubs Frannie, Francis, and Frankie are gone. I figured they would be long gone with the nice weather melting the snow. Lucky and Holly are active just like the wild bears.

Ice is melting fast on the black ice lakes. The island on Eagles Nest Lake One shows the progress. On this beautiful sunny day (63?F), colors seemed more intense, especially the greens of pine needles.

Less ice surrounding island
Bear foods are blossoming. Willows are covered with catkins. Red maples are flowering. Both are bear foods.

Birds are coming back in number. The great blue heron is standing in its usual spot beside the stream that drains Woods Lake. A purple finch added color to the birds at the feeder. Dark-eyed juncos are still here in number before scattering across the boreal forest of Canada. The day started with a tight flock of hooded mergansers flying past the window headed toward the merganser nest box. I was too slow to get across the room to see her enter, but a telltale feather was on the entry hole. The 8 males that were following her landed on the pond strutting their mating plumage with different degrees of crest erection.

Red maple leaves   Eastern chipmunk    Willow catkins

Purple finch   Dark-eyed junco     Great blue heron

Hooded merganser flying    Hooded mergansers     Mallard pair
Eastern chipmunks are taking more than their share of bird seed. Instead of eating it, like a person would politely do at Old Country Buffet, they stuff their cheeks and store it and come back for more.

Thank you for all you do.

Any news Willi  ???

" never understood people letting their animals on someones property."  I lived in the country with a half mile driveway.  There were two houses before mine and was was the last house.  The driveway had a sharp curve so Windsor lived across a narrow field from me.  Abby was in our yard and I had been a ways out in the driveway making little trenches for the water to run off that spring day and he followed me home.  He was wonderful with people and up until then was ok with my dogs.  Abby was kind of scared of him and when he came in the yard she growled.  The second the growl came out he went for her.  He never came over again...............

I still have to go back a page to post. Anyone else still having that problem?

Cal, you could eat the orange and plant the seeds in a flower pot. I don't know if it would ever get big enough to have fruit or how long it would take for that to even happen but you could try. You could keep it outside in the summer but would have to bring it in before frost. I've never seen a frozen orange! Wonder if it would turn brown?  What is a vegan checkout? My Walmart doesn't have one of those! After we were talking about Jon Benet, I sort of remember hearing something about a guy they thought had killed her. You'd think our stupid local newspaper would have printed something about that!

Willi, makes me sick to think about Henry's ordeal. Hoping he recovers quickly and comes home to you and Jerry soon.

Ra, I'm hoping the same...that Liz's death is a trick so the bad guys will forget about her! Sometimes I can't watch Criminal Minds because it is so gruesome and far fetched! I wonder where they come up with some of this stuff!

Didn't realize it was time to fix supper! :o Bbl! Have to tell you this quick...I got a new laptop! A touch screen!  :o Crow has to do whatever you have to do to get the stuff off my old one! Hope I like it!
